What are your feelings/opinions on foam wigs? What makes a good character wig? What makes a bad character wig?

IMO I think foam wigs can look cool when done properly and absolutely terrible when done by amateurs.
By "character wigs" I mean the hyper-stylized, hair sprayed into place wigs that have zero movement but are source accurate. I think they can look cool but sometimes come off helmet-like.

Here's one I did. I want to remake it and do a few things differently but overall I'm pretty happy with the look. I like stylized wigs a lot because it gives you the right silhouette but in some instances I think it's important to not go TOO cartoony and to make sure it still does look like hair. Depends on the character design.

>>
>>9290301
generally peoples just slick back a part of the hair and call it a day but you can also take a really short wig and sew a part of it to the base wig
>>
I prefer the look of realistic wigs over character-accurate wigs. I appreciate the effort that goes into crazy spiky anime wigs but I just think they look a bit off/uncanny when worn.
>>
I need major help with a wig I'm working on. So this wig consists of a base wig that is braided into 2 long braids, then a curly clip on ponytail in the back. I used various tutorials to untangle and de-frizz these parts and it worked at first. So I rebraided the bottom and made sure the curls on the ponytail looked nice and then wore it to a con. After only a few hours the braids and ponytail were a frizzy mess. This is an Arda Wig and I know they have the tendency to frizz and tangle, but is there anything I can do to make my braids/ponytail look smooth and beautiful again?

As stylized as borderlands is, I think any hair styling as far as BL cosplay goes looks way better with real hair. It's pretty easy to paint and shade hair fibers if they're set right as well.
Pic related. They seriously used model magic.

Use a hair straightener on the frizz, restyle, coat liberally with hair spray if you can. Use a detangling spray on the unstyled bits. Otherwise you'll just need to do maintenance after every wear.

This is still a general wig question thread right?

In any case, I'm looking to leveling up my bang-cutting skills from using basic scissors and cutting haphazardly to actual hair scissors. What are the basic tools I should start with?
>>
>>9289794
I prefer wigs that keep it natural. It should resemble real hair as much as possible. Cartoon hairstyles shouldn't be taken too literally. Also regarding color. Takeru Sato for example, looks so much better as Kenshin, than the average cosplayer that uses a bright red wig.

So I'm working on a madoka cosplay and I'm wondering on a wig choice. I'm thinking of getting my stuff from Arda and i was wondering if it would be better to just get the Chibi pigtail wig and shorten the actual tails or to get a jaguar, cut it down and put on two short ponytail clips on either side, cutting them to the right length.

What do you guys think?

Clearly they haven't if they're here asking for spoon feeding. 95% of tutorials say use Got2B. And by using common reasoning skills you can figure out that tutorials for longer hairstyles aren't going to work on a wig two inches long.

If you can't handle googling something yourself, tell mommy your computer time is up.
>>
>>9293215
God, I really hate this kind of wig for Nui. When KLK was really big and everyone was cosplaying her, the structured wigs were a nightmare. I mean at least this one is constructed properly, but they still just seem so off.

So I'm planning on doing Axel from KH at some point (yeah, I know that shipped sailed, but I'm always late to things so hey).

I've looked online for a good wig, come up with nothing. I've decided that I'm gonna do it myself.

I'm thinking of this as a base; https://www.arda-wigs.com/collections/classic-lacefront/products/suzi-classic?variant=27836691846

I'm gonna dye bits of it to make it more... realistic? I was intending on using the sharpie method, but I've never actually dyed a wig before so does anyone have any easy to use instructions? I've seen tutorials, but I can never easily locate the things they say to use.

Also I'm a bit concerned about spiking it - I've done a Cloud wig before, but I've not done anything with a lace front before. Does it behave the same way as a normal wig? Do I need to treat it differently?

You can do it anon. I made my Cinderella by getting a wig you can pony tail from Epic Wigs, and did a french twist bun with extra poof. Style up and poof the bangs a bit and you're good. Hair spray aplenty and use lots of bobby pins.

I'm looking at arda right now. I've seen gothic lolita wigs and I like how they look but not sure if I should order? I know on here a lot of people hate on glw or used too. I haven't been on /cgl/ in a long time. I'm just looking for wigs for pastel goth outfits. Especially ones with bangs. I had one made for like 200$ from someone on etsy with great reviews but the color looked so different on camera and I swear in every light the color changed and it just had this awful synthetic shine to it. It was a white/grey oombre wig.

not the anon that you were responding to but arda has pictures up of what the colors look like in natural lighting vs indoor. They have a whole gallery dedicated from various cosplayers as well as just wefts. Hope that helps!

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but would a lace front wig be the best bet for a team skull grunt? I'm not sure if it would be easier to get a lace front or to get a wig with a normal fringe and style it accordingly.
>>
>>9313452

I mean, if you're gonna be putting a hat over it, then a lace front is gonna be a waste of money. The purpose of a lace front is to give a realistic hair line.

You could definitely get away with a regular wig
>>

For me it depend on the rest of the character design. Are they in a real world setting, or wearing something that could or does exist in the real world? Epic's Dark Red isn't as bad, it's a little duller than the Apple Red. Both Epic and Arda's Apple Reds are super bright. My Maki wig is Arda's Apple Red, but.. well, it wasn't my first choice.

Question: Is it a good idea to ask an actual barber to style a wig for me? On one hand, I'm inexperienced and might mess it up, but on the other hand, if I do it myself I have control over the whole thing. Pic related would be the hairstyle in question.
>>
>>9316612
Look at African American wig shops. There are tons like this that are better quality and cheaper.
>>
>>9320128
I would be cautious asking a random barber to style a wig like your picture. I went to a family friend who happened to be a hairstylist with a similar request (the shorter, upswept back, specifically). He WOULD NOT cut the back nearly short enough because he was convinced the wefts would show. In the end, I ended up cutting it myself. In short, wigs are anatomically different than human scalps and you may not be able to convince someone else to do dramatic cutting and styling.
>>
Can I get a rec for a spray to help with an Arda wig? Tangles like a motherfucker and I never had a problem with the few other wigs I've had.

Also, I don't suppose anyone can recommend me someone to cut a wig? Or should I just find a wig seller on etsy and ask? I've practiced before on shitty wigs and this one is long and so thick that I don't trust myself. I don't need it styled, just shortened.
>>
>>9320128
You *can*, they are trained in how to handle wigs, but the other anon summed it up well.
For that hairstyle specifically, I'd look into re-wefting the wig so the wefts at the back are upside-down. It'll make it much easier to get that upward-swoop thing going.
>>
>>9320516
If you just need to shorten the wig, you shouldn't need to pay someone to do this for you. There are plenty of video and print tutorials to reference. I'd also suggest looking into getting some thinning shears and practice cutting on one of your shitty wigs. Thinning shears are designed to cut only some hair, reducing volume but also creating a blended effect so hair won't look bluntly cut.

You'll want to take regular bladed scissors first and cut off most of the length you want, leaving maybe 1-2" longer than you desire, then look on YT for tutorials on how to thin out the hair to create the blended/thinned look. Reduce bulk on that remaining 1-2" to get the wig down to the length you want.

If you have clippers with comb attachments, that's another way to achieve a quick trim on a wig. I wouldn't suggest going without a comb unless you've got more experience.

I got some thinning shears at a Dollar Store once, but they have nicer pairs at Sally Beauty/any other beauty shop with hair stuff for a reasonable price. You don't need to go top of the line because wigs ≠ real hair. Clipper sets with basic combs can be pretty cheap too, I've seen them $10ish at big box stores before.
>>
>>9320180
>>9320523
I'm already planning on buying Arda's reverse-wefted wig, so the wefts oughtn't be a problem. I'll just do it myself, then, so I have control over the whole thing. I'm gonna try and get some practice in beforehand.

PLS HALP

I ordered an affordable wig online and, surprise surprise, it's shitty. Way longer (that's a new one for me) than expected, and has that cheap glossy plastic look.

When cutting wigs (I need to get about 15cm off it), is the best method scissors or this sort of scalpel-slicing-technique the best for a natural look?

And is there any way to tone down the shinyness of the hair? Some sort of hairspray or hairdust (shiet I dunno what it's called)?

Depends on what kind of lace front wig you actually need. For what I classify as "real people" hair styles or real people hair style wigs that can be modified to your needs, nearly any online hair shop will have lace fronts, especially ones you'd classify as "ethnic" or sometimes "Black", but sometimes you need to search harder for specific colors like reds and blondes.

If you want wacky/cosplay-friendly lace fronts, then you either need to be prepared to heavily modify/dye/etc a regular wig or buy from Arda or Epic Cosplay (which now has like 1 long style of lace front - hoping they continue to expand that line) or their babbu store Pish Posh wigs for bi-colored wigs, kinda lolita-ish/ fun fashion friendly.

You didn't mention what country you're from but I'm in the US and have purchased nice lace front wigs from Wigs-US.com, iamahair.com, and even some medium-quality wigs on eBay and Aliexpress. Again, it really depends on what you're trying to do.

Be careful with this method, my sibling destroyed one of his wigs trying this out. Turned out he was allergic to the fabric softener too, so he couldn't wear it without erupting in hives. It was a mess in all ways,

I'm going to do something similar to the style in the picture but with a dark brown or black wig. I'm pretty sure I could accomplish it with a normal wig but I live in rural Sweden and haven't been able to find a store that actually sells those at a decent price (everything I've found is human hair and 100+ USD).

Would you mind linking any of the decent eBay/Ali stores you've used?

Hm, would either of these be somewhat like what you're looking for? You would probably want to loosen the curls a bit with steam or heat and trim accordingly, but they seem like good base wigs to work off of.

I have only bought from the first seller, but their feedback is pretty good and it's free shipping to Sweden.

Well, I think this is a great cosplay. So there.

I believe it's afterwards? I've done something similar where I've brushed a bit of baby powder through to reduce shine in a wig. Though it does leave it feeling a bit clumpy/greasy? Maybe that's not the best words to describe it but it does change the texture just a bit.

dry shampoo works too and you can apply it easier if you have the spray kind

Original asker here

I went for dry schampoo + "hair pulver", and baby powder in between. So spray - baby powder - brush - more spray. It looks amazing now! Thanx :)

Yeah, those definitely look like they could work, thank you!

Would anyone help me figure out what Arda wig would work best for the hair in this picture? I love the hair work he did for this cosplay, and I want to try my hand at it.

Has anyone purchased wigs from LightInTheBox? They have tons of styles, lots that are dirt cheap, but I'm not sure I trust it. The only reason I want to give it a go is a lot of the wigs have legit reviews that say they're pretty good (with photos included)

I did once like 3-4 years ago. It was a sailor Jupiter wig. It actually was pretty nice. Nothing amazing but for a prestyled $20 wig it was good quality.

Are they using wire or do you think they used wire to hold it up at first and then hairsprayed the fuck out of it?

Seconding the question about arda. I just got my first long wig from them and it looks beautiful, but it tangles worse than any long wig I've had.

Any pointers on how to tackle a wig like this? Especially the shaved part and making the ponytail stand up like that.

Arda's long straight wigs are notorious for tangling.
You can look into wig detangler (Mane N Tail is pretty good, yes it's for horses but Sally's carries it). Ideally any kind of silicone spray.
