ITT: Lolita coords with gothic makeup and/or hair

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

You ever see a coord and suspect the lolita is a goth outside of lolita because of how she does her face and hair? No matter how sweet she dresses, you know she'd rather be swaying madly to Siouxsie or stomping her heels off to Combichrist? The comm member who looks like a vampire in gothic even when she's not dressing for a convention or Halloween meetup?

Post looks that, no matter the coord, have that Western goth, "I can't wait for my yearly pilgrimage to WGT" kind of face. Even or especially if the coord is NOT gothic.

I think non-gothgoth lolitas can learn a thing or two about resilience from goths. Lolitas seem more afraid of public disapproval and talk about how to manage their image when encountering normies, especially when the name of the fashion comes up because of the negative connotations. Goths react to the negative connotations of their lifestyle, the trashy-devil-worshipping-school-shooter assumptions of the public, a lot differently.

the left could be gothic (Western) makeup, but the right looks too clean, fresh, not "alternative." i am unsure how to explain.

from what is shown here >>9238728, this also looks more like lolita makeup (gothic lolita sure) than Western makeup that grew out of goth scene/music festival/club trends.

the hair is also key, like >>9238738's real hair in an alternative style. in pic related, the tiny bangs help give the "I shit bats" impression.

i can't really explain it well though, and ultimately it is subjective. especially when the lolita emulates a visual kei look, which has plenty of potential for crossover with western goth beauty styles. if someone could succinctly describe the distinguishing features of Western gothic, Visual kei gothc, and the softer/cleaner Gothic lolita makeup styles, i would sacrifice an ita to Mana and a mallgoth to Siouxsie to ask for blessings upon that anon.

other elements often (not always, don't even start ya trolls) present in Western Gothic makeup are sharp lines, angular contour, tiny or nonexistent or whack-ass eyebrows, and a mature or subversive vibe.

Black Friday used to be into lolita, and she incorporated the youthful, round-eyed look into her style, but ultimately favors the unnatural and even spooky look to the soft, not-too-unnatural, girlish gothic lolita style. she's somewhere in the middle of East versus West while also being OTT.

To be fair, I think being accused of encouraging paedophilia and liking ageplay is pretty much literally the worst thing to be accused of. Satanic panic is easier to laugh at because it's mostly silly and unfounded in reality, but paedophilia is real and incredibly damaging. I do both goth and lolita and the negative assumptions I get made about me in goth are much easier to not give a shit about.

More gothic-looking make-up is easy to find in oldschool, but for some GLB pics it's impossible to distinguish whether it's being consciously gothic or whether the model just has thin brows and a dark lip because that was on-trend in Japan in the late 90s and early 00s.

My everyday hair and makeup is pretty trad goth, but when I wear lolita I usually tone it way down. Some of the examples in this thread make me want to incorporate more western goth elements into my lolita style.

>>9238942
That's a pretty good point. Lolita also seems to attract really delicate/insecure people who are easily intimidated when they get stared at in public. Most of the goths I know don't give a flying fuck about what the public thinks.

Goth is really well-known these days, though. I can't imagine a teacher getting fired over wearing goth on their days off, and if they had an incredibly stupid or prejudiced principal they could easily get it overturned. I want to train as an elementary school teacher and I genuinely fear some idiot telling my supervisor or whatever that I wear "adult baby fetish clothes and they're called lolita, you know, like the book". If it was goth, they could google it and see that goth is an incredibly popular and well-known subculture that doesn't equal satanism which doesn't equal sacrificing babies or whatever. Lolita has had so much dodgy reporting and so much stuff based on the other lolita comes up when you search it that I can imagine someone in power refusing to believe that it wasn't a fetish and nobody else knowing enough about it to challenge their decision.

There's also a huge difference in the gothic fashion in America versus Europe.

America is way more toned down.
>>
Cyber goth isn't really popular in America.

I think Victorian and Steampunk fashion have a bigger following and there's a couple cities that actually have gothic clubs. Sage for off topic, I have nothing more to add to the thread.

I thought cybergoth was just less popular nowadays in general? I get the impression that even in Germany it's rare, and the UK seems to have preserved some cyber, raver shit but not cyberGOTH specifically.

The fact that you mentioned only a couple of cities actually have gothic clubs prompted me to search for them outside London here. Oh man is everyone in the club photos of goth nights old. Kind of sad that it's a dying subculture.
>>
>>9239079

>>9238637
Same. A number of my older lolita friends were originally Goths and they still actively wear gothic fashions, have a gothic lifestyle, and attend Goth nights/clubs, whereas there's a trend of people being burnt out in the lolita community. People I used to look up to 5 years ago or even less than that sold their frills and pursued more normie interests.
>>
>>9239079
I always thought of cyber as goth fashion. It's appropriate to wear to a club.

Yeah, there's a couple in the big cities. Skinny Puppy actually came about an hour away from my town maybe a year ago. Sadly I missed the chance to see them live.
>>
>>9239079
I wish goth's ageing demographic wasn't such a vicious cycle. Once newer goth become old enough to go to goth clubs, they attend a couple of events, realise they're the youngest person in the room, and stop going. The fact nobody stays for long means that there's never more than a few younger goths in the room at events, meaning none of the people who turn up to try it consider it worth keeping going. There's not much either group can do in this scenario as most people are going to want to hang out with people of a similar age and interests regardless, so it's not just a case of different age groups having to learn to tolerate each other.

People get into the fashion as younger teens and the community is as hostile as usual towards babybats (usually within reason). They get older and enter the scene fully, then realise that the goth community at large still considers them young and annoying. By that point, the rest of society thinks goth is a juvenile phase they really should have gotten over by now, they find no community, and everyone who isn't super fucking dedicated will just quit. In contrast, even though gothic lolita is the least popular of the major substyles, the fact lolita in general has such a large community of people with like-minded interests keeps me sticking around.

I feel like being a lone goth is becoming less easy now that society as a whole is becoming more free in fashion and youth subcultures in general are less of a thing. When I was younger I used to see goth women all the time, going about their lives, and who I could aspire to be like. I see less and less goths in the wild these days, and have only seen two goths in the past two years who weren't tweens or middle-aged.
>>
>>9239100
There actually use to be a club in my old town ran by a goth couple. They were really nice to all the younger goths and since the club was technically a restaurant, they let those under 18 in until 11. The club featured a 'goth night' in which they played industrial, EBM, and even bands like The Cure. They eventually went out of the business. The building is still for sale.

I'd say everyone is around but scattered all over the place.
>>
>>9239100
To elaborate on that last point, since it seems weird that society could become more accepting but goths less accepted, I feel like goth is more and more accepted but full-time goth is moreso seen as an immature phase people grow out of? Whereas previously it's people who couldn't stick to one style fulltime that were seen as immature.

I'm not sure if the increased popularity of gothic aesthetics in mainstream fashion helps or makes things worse. One of the things I used to like about gothic lolita was that it's accepted that you might wear lolita one day and other fashions the next, whereas a lot of the goth community a few years ago was very fixed on the idea of "poseurs". There was this pressure to be a goth all the time and really adopt a lifestyle so you weren't just "seeing it as a trend", even though goth never became a mainstream trend at the time. Nowadays the mainstream genuinely IS into gothish aesthetics as a trend, so you can wear a (not Victorian) gothic outfit one day and trendy stuff the next day and people won't bat an eyelid, but if you wore gothic clothes 24/7 people would think that was weird. I feel like the fact the aesthetic is seen as a disposable trend makes people less accepting of goth as something you would want to wear every day, as they think that a "mature" person should have no problem only wearing stuff sometimes, whereas ten or fifteen years ago people couldn't imagine that a goth would only wear goth sometimes. But I guess that's mostly normies conflating "90s witch" aesthetics or whatever with goths and then expecting you to behave like people who would dabble in aesthetics like that.

It's very late and I might be talking out of my arse or making points that only apply to my specific social circle, but I get the impression that this is the way it's going.
>>
>>9239106
I live in Appalachia. My experience is likely completely different than what you experience with the subculture.

I've actually noticed more people compliment aspects of my outfits as the popularity in mainstream fashion has increased. Middle age women, old ladies, fruity old men, and even kids. I had the cutest 6 year old (You know, cute kid clothes) stare at me during the checkout line for the longest time before exclaiming, I like your outfit! Check out my doll!' She had one of those Monster High Dolls. I told her she should check out the books the dolls and show are based off of.

I think the main thing that perplexes people when the style is worn 24/7 is, 'How the hell do you make a living?'

To add to the pointless nostalgia blogposting in this thread (this pic is relevant at least), I just really fucking miss when goth was a thing and you saw goths regularly in the wild.

I used to hope lolita would become like that but with the way things are more and more centred around meetups and events less around everyday (not criticizing the new aesthetics, just noticing the trends), I don't think lolita is ever going to be something you often see girls just walking around in, even if it becomes significantly more popular.

I just want the excitement of seeing alt people walking around, looking cool and doing their own thing, but I rarely see it any more. It feels like part of the cultural landscape is being lost.

This is so true.
I've been goth for a decade but always a lone goth.

At the moment I'm too busy with work to go clubbing but when I have been I have to put up with either 1. A goth/ebm/industrial room in a rock club that actually plays a lot of non goth stuff too (and even rock clubs are getting rarer in my city) 2. The 'indie' room at a mainstream club because they will probably play joy division, the cure and the smiths at some point but the room will be full of drunk gropey student dudes or 3. A monthly goth night where everyone is 15-20 years older than me and in order to be able to enjoy the music I have to put up with women exclaiming about how young I am 'like my daughter' who is usually about 10.

The goth blogging community really helps keep me in the subculture. My only alt friends locally though are lolitas - so I focus more energy on lolita than goth these days. Not sure that's surprising though when I'm already happy with my record collection, my corporate goth wardrobe and my casual clothes but am still building my lolita wardrobe.

At the moment I'm kind of happy because my city's getting collectives (of mostly students) doing things like non-cheesy 80s music nights or edgy art student dark nights where loads of goth stuff gets played. There are DJs playing really great selections of tracks and even though it's a young crowd of art students who like a e s t h e t i c s, at least everyone seems to enjoy the music and most people are creatively dressed even if they're not goth goth. In the city I live in student nights that don't play cheese have much more respectful guys and safe atmosphere than non-student clubs, so I don't get the groping problem. Both cities I've lived in have had ~2 goth nights a month, but last time I went to one there were only two other person in the room under 25 and most of the room looked to be in their late 30s to mid-50s. Because goth nights cater to a broad crowd the music was actually less cohesive and appealing to me than at some not explicitly goth events, since they have to try to please everybody. There is one shitty rock club that doesn't play goth, and not much else.

Where is this blogging community? Tumblr? I never found that many goths on there but it might just be that, aside from a handful of efamous girls, most people don't post outfit shots which is what I'm really interested in. I know a couple of goths with blogs but most of the blogs I know from Blogspot/Livejournal are dead.
>>
>>9239276
That sounds like a great scene to me- I'd rather have the good music and the art would be a bonus for me!
Student nights are always gropey where I live- if my non goth friends want to go out I insist we go to a guy club for that reason. Good thing I secretly love 90s cheesy club tunes too!

Most of the goth blogs I read are on blogspot. Coffin kitsch is great for outfits, GIY (goth it yourself) for home decor, the everyday goth. Sadly lots of my old favourites are becoming less active or closing their blogs e.g. sophistique noir, corpgoth, curious professor z.
>>
>>9239284
The goth night scene is a waste of time because the events usually only have about 30-40 people, as well as the age demographic issues. But I'm super excited about the burgeoning popularity of dark edgy music thanks to hipsters hopping on trends, we had nothing like this last year but we've had several events in the past few months. I never actually see goths here outside of events though, which is why I feel like the scene is dead.

>I just want the excitement of seeing alt people walking around, looking cool and doing their own thing
I really, really feel this. It's one of the things that motivate me to continue wearing lolita daily, actually. Sure I enjoy wearing it for other reasons too but I feel like if I don't see people wearing alternative fashion "in the wild" on a regular basis, I'm going to be that person myself, you know what I mean?

They look like Meta, but I don't think they have them in stock right now.

I just want moitie to re-release their OTKs. For a company that's in a financially rocky position it's disappointing how they aren't trying to make quick cash by re-releasing popular items or selling more basics.
>>
>>9239975
>>9240015
Meta has two varieties of knee high socks at the moment, their OTKs are very popular so I imagine they'll restock them at some point.
There's a pair with tulle lace or raschel lace like the one pictured, and both varieties are available in black.

This really hits home for me. I was always interested in things on the "darker" side but only somewhat recently made the effort to really try to immerse myself in the culture. I listen to a bunch of the classics and love them, and whatever else I find on youtube mostly. I don't dress full-time, and I don't really have the expendable income to spend on super lavish outfits, but I'll try to cobble together black clothes, cheap but appropriate jewelry, and do my eyes up. I'm honestly dying for someone to be goth with, preferably someone who's already been in the scene for a while so I can learn from them and graduate from being a babybat, but I know no one. There's no scene here that I am aware of, all of my friends don't care about or like my music, no events nearby I can attend... I don't give up on it because I genuinely like it, but I guess hardcores might call me a poser for not dressing up in the fashion 100% of the time. It really sucks. On the bright side, Peter Murphy is playing an hour away next month and I might be able to persuade my boyfriend to take me... that might be a good opportunity to finally participate in the scene for once. Or I could stick out like a sore thumb and end up disappointed/talk to no one/worst case scenario be ridiculed. My self esteem isn't incredibly low and I wouldn't let myself be pushed around but it'd still hurt if I was rejected in the end by elitists.
>>

>I guess hardcores might call me a poser for not dressing up in the fashion 100% of the time

Don't care so much about what other people think. Concertgoers are there for the music, not to make fun of random strangers.
>>
I'm not sure if this question relates to the thread, but as I'm building my gothic wardrobe I noticed have an extreme abundance of black velvet things. Dresses, shirts, skirts, scarves, gloves, jackets. Is there such thing as too much velvet? Should I not wear more than one velvet piece at a time?
>>
>>9246518
There never can be too much velvet.
>>
>>9246518
I try to avoid having two velvet pieces touching each other unless they can do it in such a way that they'll look like a continuous piece (like, I might wear a velvet dress and velvet shoes, or a velvet skirt and velvet top of the same colour and material together, but I wouldn't wear a chiffon top with a velvet skirt and velvet leggings), but it might just be my lolita matchiness showing.
>>
>>9239011
I'm in education, and this is a genuine concern of mine... I've mostly been sticking to otome and wearing lolita at cons (so I can claim its a costume, just in case). I hate that lolita is called lolita so much. It causes so many unnecessary problems for everyone.

>>9246917
>>9246655

If it's a problem, remind them that the book Lolita gets it's name from the main character.

The name was only chosen because Lolita is the diminutive form of Dolores. Lolita/Dolores means 'pain/suffering'.

The book is saying the girl is suffering due to a pedophiliac relationship.

Truth be told, it's only recently that 'lolita' was associated with 'pedophilia'. People were naming their kids 'Lolita' long after the book came out.
>>
In fact the name itself is one of many Spanish titles for the Virgin Mary. It's origin is with the Virgin Mary, not a fucking book.
>>
These pics are great, but does anyone have anyone tips/guidelines for achieving this kind of look? What kind of makeup should I be going for if I want to achieve this look?
>>
>>9238621
... you can smoke cloves?
>>
>>9247551
>>9247557
I have come to conclusion that the name origins in the book. However, I don't think it was originally chosen by lolitas. Some western sources I have read states that the meaning of lolita is a bit different in a Japan: a girl that's selfish, like people are generally in the age of Lolita. And lolitas are selfish, they only dress for their own sake and spend money on expensive clothes just to please themselves. Perhaps media tried to mock them for selfishness and appearing as non-sexual like a child would. I don't know but the Virgin Mary thing just seems so distant.
>>
>>9251332
>the Virgin Mary thing just seems so distant
Because it relates more to the name Dolores than Lolita. Her title in Spanish is María de los Dolores, or "Mary of Sorrows".

a large trend in Goth fashion recently was towards more natural, albeit heavily arched, brows. That 'HD brow/instagram brow' shit really works for Gothic makeup! I grow my eyebrows back every summer and let them shine in all their gloriously thick beauty.

Lolita is what you would call a young girl or young woman named Dolores at that time.

I'm just saying I could see how people could choose the name, even if from the book, and not relate it directly to pedophilia.
