This thread is for ouji and aristocrat (aka "boystyle") discussion. Boystyle refers to the masculine counterparts of lolita and aristocrat fashions. There is a lot of overlap between these styles, and different people use different terms to describe them. So, consider this a thread for those whose style is on the right half of Buttcape's Lolita Family Triangle: http://www.kawacura.com/moripress/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/0dmmLH6-350x350.jpg

are you mana enough for real Aristocrat? Moitie has a 30% off sale on CD Japan:
Miho Matsuda has a lot on sale, sizes S-M-L depending on item.
Anyone own this piece? I've been thinking of getting it for a while, but can't seem to find any photos of it in action.
Apart from that one of Mana, but that doesn't really show it well.
Hey so I am trying to understand the difference between a busby and a bearskin and am not having much luck with research. From what I can gather so far is that the bearskin is taller and both hats we worn in different contexts (by different people, countries or regimen). Aside from that I can't find anything else out about different defining features and in many cases the names are used interchangeably,
I always thought they were all called busby's until I read your post, now I don't want to call it the wrong thing! Can you help an anon out.
side note to keep it relevant: Does anyone know if they are planning to release this hat? Both my mum and I decided I should get it if they do when we saw pics from the show. I've wanted to coord fur hats with military for ages.

also yeah BB is in many respects a riff on CC. i imagine the mangaka was a Yuki Kaori fan.

This needs to be a thing. Just doing Time Warp and JoJo poses and just generally silly photoshoots instead of "Stand there and look serious and fancy."

so i started (re)reading it because of this thread and read everything up to the end of the Red Ram arc (everything before Godchild begins). the number of twins, lookalikes, split or multiple personalities, and general cases of mistaken identity is too damn high. for a mangaka with such a distinctive, fashionable art style i feel like the repeated plot twists involving "true" identities makes a weird kind of sense. there is a thesis' worth of material here, i am sure of it.
>also Boz on the left, Lapin Agill on the right
this fucking cake hat thing tho
My understanding is the Busby is shorter, and can even be somewhat cloth and floppy. Though the original Hungarian versions were stiff, tgey were only about as tall as they were wide, and almost always had a feather. As opposed to the bearskins, there are a wide variety of Busby's, a more armies fielded them.
Bearskins of course are tall, never floppy, almost never feathered.
Continuing, the original Hungarian Busby is noticeably different from the bearskins of the British grenadiers and French imperial guard. Notice the cloth and feather/plum, the flat top and how it's only slightly taller than wide. Hussars of most Nations had hats like this, including the famous Death's Head Hussars.
British infantry, especially early light infantry and rifle regiments worry a 'busby' that was floppy and almost entirely or wholly cloth. It's stupid and they should feel bad for calling it that. It did have a feather though.
Silly hats, you say?
>What the ruckus are you doing for Halloween, /ouG/ulls?
I went cat-themed ouji. Also learned how to properly tie a tie for the first time.
The entire night I had "Ah, It's a Wonderful cat Life!" in my head, it was a bit unfortunate. I met up with a small group of lolitas by chance at a Halloween party on campus, so that was a lot of fun.
>tfw someone says they want their SO to wear something "more grown up than boystyle"
Fucker it is not literal children's clothes. The word just means male version of whatever is being discussed (usually, lolita). That is it. Lolitas should know better than to assume a Japanese term for something is meant to be taken literally in English. They should also know better than to assume that "cute, sweet" substyles represent the whole spectrum. Not every "boy's style" in pic related is cutesy (though the ouji one is pretty damn cute).
Don't get me started on people who say ouji doesn't have substyles. It's the same fucking clothes, made by the same fucking brands, and mirrors lolita. The only reason substyles for ouji aren't more commonly discussed is because most people treat ouji as a substyle of lolita instead of a companion style.
There are GLB/Kera spreads that differentiate between sweet, gothic, and classic ouji, and Japanese oujis use the word to refer not just to sweet cutesy stuff but for head-to-toe Boz.
>tfw someone calls one classic coord "kodona" and another one "aristocrat" because one has shorts and the other has pants
>tfw someone wears a bunch of bows and OTT gaudy trim but it's black so they call it gothic ouji
>tfw someone wears pastel fairy kei and says they just invented sweet ouji
It's not that hard, guys...
If people are calling ouji/boystyle "kodona" just because some idol described his style that way then they should also follow Melanie Martinez lead and refer to lolita as "adult baby".
The stupidest thing is people who are corrected will insist kodona is easier to say than ouji, while pronouncing it kuh-dough-nuh and/or spelling it "kodana." Like... How is this less complicated than saying oh-gee? Just how??
I am glad others feel this way also. It's so frustrating to see the terms misused on basically every EGL community platform.
all right but what about the other ouji hat in the series?
Any tips for brands with a similar style to MmM/Boz but with smaller male sizes? I'm drowning in their male size and the female size have curves. Bakasoseji wears female sized AatP, but I have broader shoulders than him and AatP is seldom to my taste. I just want some nice jackets...
more Halloween because so many themed boystyle coords this year. here is a White Rabbit featuring a Queen of Hearts tabard
decapitated royalty, rococo style. bring back bouffant wigs imo
if you want to show legwear, consider boots and a cape, with a hat, for both practical warmth and selling the "look" of winter.
white + blue + gold = winter holidays
candelabras, candles, and other human-made light sources are symbolic of the long nights of winter
AatP's showy tassels and their little soldier hats are also pretty appropriate for Christmas, but i am not sure about combining them. a toy soldier coord would be adorbs, but maybe keep the tassels to the epaulettes rather than as fringe for a cape
wool is an underrated choice. i am not sure if pic related is wool but it looks like it; with an overcoat when outdoors, this could be a comfy winter coord.
white and grey for a frosty look
also winter lets you wear frillier things without feeling annoyed by the lace rubbing against your sweaty skin
all-whitw on the left would be a nice winter look. the right would be too chilly. better not to leave upper thigh exposed unless your winter is warm
white blue and silver = winter
>coat/vest combos in white or jewel tones
something like this, or with the coat and vest totally separate, or something in the middle like Roland?
buttcape's blog (address is in OP) has a shopping guide which includes links to Taobao shops that sell ouji items. that is how i found the Amastacia one before i got distracted looking for things for myself. would recommend looking through there!
Elegy quietly released another aristo-friendly item, an unfitted long vest remniscent of a priest's cassock. because it is not fitted, i would not recommend it for ouji; but flowy silhouettes fit well with aristo.
and the sizing is customizable. big western aristos, check it out: http://www.elegyclothing.com/c-o-l-l-e-c-t-i-o-n-s/black-mass-long-vest?category=BLACK%20†%20MASS
starting price is 150USD
why don't Aristocrats opt for the sort of open neckline Mana sometimes uses? EGA as he deminstrated it embraced sexually ambiguous/ambivalent signals without becoming crass. i would even say that a "freer body" is a significant element in what differentuates EGA coords from lolita/ouji coords.
>implying the average Anglosphere Aristocrat could sport a bare chest tastefully
>implying the dominant "Neo-Victorian" aesthetic of current Aristocrats isn't indicative of the psychic Puritanism that haunts the Western EGL community
>implying anyone cares about what Mana did, does, or will do any more
This question is probably asked in every ouji-thread, but here I go anyway
I've been considering starting to wear more ouji/aristocrat, what is the best way to start and what should I keep in mind when making an outfit?
yes and it was used by a singer to describe his personal aesthetic. later a different singer used it for her genki, kawaii style.
it has nothing to do with ouji and has been used by a label by Western people due to 1. a misinterpretation of that singer's remarks, and 2. stubborn refusal to accept correction.
i legitimately did not know Angelic Pretty ever sold pants
why do they not sell more?
New Long Ears and Sharp Ears ouji pieces!
The vest is super cute. Might have to buy the whole set.
The collar/shoulder thing is removable.
Also comes in blue.
Aaand some shorts, but they look like the fit will be awkward.
Almost all of their pants are horribly hideous desu
The sailor ones are cute, and the skirt pair *could* be coorded into punk well, but the rest of these are just bad.
Any recommendations for males' boots that go with the AATP Harlequin (just released) set?
Everything in navy blue I've found so far is women's, and there's only 3-4 good black boots that I've found in men's.
Pic related is one of the only good pairs I've found.
Let's discuss old school.
Ouji fashion has been around for a while, but is it long enough to have a style parallel to old school lolita?
I just think of tiny top hats and striped socks.
oh man i have a million oldschool ouji pics but no time to dump and no idea how long it has been around.
flatter/very thin hairstyles were more common, as well as traditional fabric patterns. gothic might go more bold with its pleather and netting but i think most ouji involved traditional fabrics.
and gothic loved velvet
like, loved it
need to stop though, busy. be back later
stopping in with this from Volume 1 of the GLB, which refers to the shirt and short pants on the far right upper corner as ouji (the gauze frill shorts are "pretty ouji" if my kana is correct). if any Japanese speakers want to take a crack at translating, small bits like this tell the reader how to dress so it could be instructive as to what made oldschool ouji.
also from vol.1, ouji makeup
any Japanese help appreciated
oh my god volume three has a tutorial for Elegant Gothic Ouji
all this time searching and i finally found something that uses the exact term i use for my style
and it is beautiful
gothic ouji in the middle. the long straight lightened hair seem to go with the more gothic ouji coords from this time. shorts are also more often open at the hem instead of fitted, for a baggy look, but that is not a universal trait. just more common in oldschool than now.
dropped pic. dude in middle top cell calls his fashion theme gothic ouji
AatP releases something I love and it is only available in one size and is also way over my budget.
god i want this fucking jacket though
I just don't like that pleated ribbon trim and that the back is cropped with that flowy stuff in the back. But it is odd that there is only one size. I hope the other long jacket doesn't disappoint me.
but worry not! the Toy Soldier is two sizes, and AatP is still working through their horde of golden tassel trim.
>tfw they give the shittiest set mens and ladies sizing
Do anoy of you think some less otp steampunk stuff could work for certain styles of ouji? a lot of the coats and such especially look like there'd be crossover, like this one as a quick example i just saw. But then I'm, really not the best at this so I thought it would be best to ask. With the right accessories and makeup and the rest of the outfit I think it could work in a lot of cases, especially considering how tiny most japanese made stuff tends to be
The Ouji is Sisen! I love how in old snaps people mix existing gothic and punk items (like the trousers in >>9259246) but the aesthetic is spot on. Of.coirse I am aware back then their range of choices were limited so they had to be creatively. But that is how coordinations should be, not wearing head to toe of what a brand has prepared for you.
neo-victorian menswear in general is fine if it is well-made. see >>9259960's comment about how oldschool oujis made do with what was available.
just avoid the ita elements, don't overpay (mens gothic clothes in the west is shit for the prices companies charge, imo, compared to brands like Boz or Moitie), and don't give up on indie brands that do custom sizing.
vampire prince makeup from volume 11
the other is referred to as a queen
this is what vampire royalty of the mid 00s looked like
back in volume 3, i am 79% certain the bottom middle panel says today's fashion theme is "baka ouji." baka ouji is now my new aesthetic
a while page of ouji style guide from volume 8, when gothic was obviously the dominant fashion force.
i am surprised how many ouji guides the early-2000s GLBs had. i am only finding random scanned pages online and yet they are abundant enough to make me sort of annoyed that the western EGL community ignored it for so many years, choosing instead to talk about nonsense like "dandy" and "kodona" based on, in each case, a single misunderstood image.
top left, vampire prince
beautiful image from vol. 12
also vol 11, perhaps Versailles is more your style
sorry gull. how much bigger are you exactly?
>random Mana in EGA because i wish more aristocrats wore overskirts

fucking goals right here
European Aristocrats > Anglosphere Aristocrats
What options exist for ouji headwear that don't cost as much as a good hat does? Lolitas get headbows and clips and I struggle to find a head accessory in a similar price range.
I ask partially for gifting purposes
Would anyone in IL with a bit of experience mind helping me out a bit? I'm pretty new but have a lot of interest but I feel like having someone helping me out would make me a lot less nervous and intimidated with this whole thing. It doesn't even need to be someone from IL I suppose but I think it'd make things a lot easier if we could eventually meet up. I'll post contact if anyone is interested....
1. Don't use it.
2. Suggest ouji or boystyle as an alternative to people who do.
3. Point out that kodona just came from one dude describing his personal style.
D. Only use it to refer to noujis.
>1. Don't use it.
not even in tags, gulls. disappointing to be browsing instagram or tumblr and find some fool who knows better use "kodona" in their tags. you out yourself as needing attention more than having integrity
where has this brand been all my life?
move over, corgi-corgi. your shit's never in stock anyway.
even their fucking HATS have fringe now.
what the hell, AatP?
this would be super cute without the fringe and tacky trimmings imo
cute designs that are ruined by irrelevant details seem like such a waste of materials to me, why do brands do this
Any suggestions on a quick/cheap headwear that I can get for ~$20 in the next two weeks? Something basic is fine, prefer it to be Gothic flavored. I'm going to an unexpected meet and I'm a bit wiped from Christmas shopping.
it is good to know there are still ouji releases that look like actual clothing
Last Putumayo release, they do quite a lot steampunk-y stuff lately.
I thought that was Kaya modeling for a split second.
Visual-Kei Kaya. They've done quite a few boystyle and lolita looks along the way.
i like the idea of brooches/badges on the sash, but it does not quite cohere in this coord
I also thought the shorts seemed kinda out of place and don't really fit the aesthetic of the rest of the coord, but everyone else seems to think it's 10/10, so maybe I'm wrong.
Still a cool coord either way.
you might be right. the gold embroidery and the lace at the bottom do not fit well with the Roland. i think if the sash were longer/looser (less horizontally wrapped) and the short pants replaced with something more military-ish instead, with non-sheer legwear, this would be improved.
i appreciate its lack of matchy-matchiness but those elements do not work as well with the apparent theme
looks like only ladies' size
but nice to see applique instead of tassels and shit
a drawfriend in the drawthread made a gif featuring an anon's ouji accessory
could be a cool reaction gif
>tfw no Mana-santa
Is Moitie even doing lucky packs this year? I was saving up for them.
>the crinkling around the shorts
did he push them up as high as they would go to show more leg?
is this pic supposed to be taken seriously?
are the hundreds of CoF likes and all the comments calling him sexy just memeing?
Thirsty lolitas gonna thirst.
Here is an "Innocent Prince" make for your Christmas Day coords.
Is there something better than fan plus friend for entry-level, custom sized jackets in a vaguely EGA style? I know their reputation is hit or miss but I keep coming back to it as the most viable option
I did, most of it was just too ouji (understandably)
Idk if ega is popular enough to have a spreadsheet of its own anywhere. I feel that steam punk and historical clothing brands might have items that I'd like but the ones that I've looked at so far all seems to be really questionable in quality
Sadly EGA isn't as popular as it used to be, so your range of choice isn't as good as it used to be for the main brands, and I'm not very aware of any TaoBao brands that cater for Aristocrat desu. When you say custom entry level stuff, in what way do you need it to be custom sized? Bigger or smaller?
Retroscope has some on clearance that could work. Stay away from their shiny shirts, but their jackets look decent.
Redballs made great trench coats. They may or may not be taking orders still, I found a couple websites but no way to purchase so you might have to call them. I got pic related from an eBay listing, in great condition and it is a really nice jacket. See what you can find
Elegy released this teaser, who is going to reserve a set? and for which house?
I'm not stopping you from doing it, I'm just saying it's probably going to look bad. The styles are too different, and cowboys aren't exactly known for there elegance. Someone could conceivably pull it off, but there's a reason it isn't as popular as the other themes. But do whatever floats your boat.
they have a shirt that would make a great staple to a bigger boystyler's wardrobe. $42, free shipping, available in black or white, and up to 51cm shoulders.
hello, it's Closet Child Update Time again. these short pants/long shorts are fucking beautiful, velveteen, gothic, with cross-shaped button trim, lace, and everything we all miss about AatP, for just 5,800 yen. also too small for me but they are literally called Dracul pants. please buy them and wear them in a beautiful coord.
the power of the Devil's Number in the item url commands you, anon.
oh and did someone say "Moitie pants for 2,500 yen"? well, i just did. 2. 5. 0. 0. yen.
