I'm pretty young and I'm obsessed with old cosplay and conventions in general, it all seemed so much different than now. Anything up until the early/MAYBE mid 2000's.
I guess I just like seeing how everyone fared when cosplay stuff (wigs, premade costumes) weren't as accessible, and what series were popular in cosplay back then that you never see now. I don't have that many photos to dump, just stuff I found from googling old conventions. So feel free to share anything, good or bad

My first con was Anime Expo '97. Cosplay was super different back then since people just wanted to dress up as their favorite characters and show their fan spirit. It wasn't so much about being good or bad but rather having a kinship with other fans. Very different from today since everybody knows about anime and cosplay is essentially just a fashion show to garner facebook likes. Kind of funny how amazingly popular it was to cosplay from shows like Ah My Goddess, Tenchi Muyo and Ranma 1/2 back then but now hardly anyone at cons even knows they exist.

Anyways, have some classic Yaya Han from AX 2000

It makes me feel odd to know my start time in cosplay was then. I kinda feel old but feeling old doesn't feel like I thought it would. I just feel skilled and less willing to give too many fucks about drama.

I do feel nostalgic for the days when people relied on skill to be popular over sexifying things for gofundme money.
But that's ok. I feel better about that because those people will grow out of it as they age.

>Ah My Goddess, Tenchi Muyo and Ranma 1/2

I was dumbfounded when I walked into AWA this year and saw a good bit of Ranma, and Tenchi with a smattering of Utena cosplay.

We were thinking manybe Hulu or Crunchyroll were introducing old anime as if it were new so the kids were cosplaying from it. I was busy rushing to a panel I was on so I didn't get to ask the cosplayers I saw what made them do old school.

I was quite pleased to see them though.
>>
>>9211195
I think it's a pretty even mix of nostalgia/90s shit being popular right now as well as older anime had fun designs to cosplay. For a large part popular stuff right now is mostly slice of life which isn't too fun to cosplay so looking at earlier anime is good for inspiration.

It's still a dream of mine to cosplay from Saber Marionete J one day.
>>
>>9209076
is this the origin of /cgl/-tan?
>>
>>9211190

This is exactly when I gave up on cosplay, when I started noticing it wasn't even about the skill of the people making their own costumes anymore, but it had turned into a simple beauty contest.

Hey, I was an Utena cosplayer at AWA this year! Spent the rest of the weekend doing Evangelion and Kaze to Ki no Uta and my friends did Ranma and Cutey Honey groups. A lot of older series have been getting massive popularity resurgences on tumblr recently; definitely think it's the combination of those shows finally becoming easy to stream/buy in the US and classic hipsterism. Hell, my Retro Anime panel had awesome attendance that was mostly teenagers.

My first convention and cosplay was 2003 and I was 16 years old. I still visit conventions but I make no longer new and big cosplay projects, because I have no longer high interest in cosplay.
Cosplay was a mistake. I want to be a doujin-artist but I waste all the years with cosplay shit! I regret it!
>>9212016
>Nostaliga and age are definitely factors, but I think it did feel different back then. More innocent and naive?
I know what you mean. I really miss that "feeling" from early/mid 00's conventions. in the year 2010+ the convention-feeling is now complete different. Since 2014 are the comic/doujin artists more interesting and important than cosplay for me.
>>
>>9209692
>It wasn't so much about being good or bad but rather having a kinship with other fans.
This. I used to look down on people who didn't put a lot of effort into their cosplay. But now I find myself torn between dressing up because I love the character and bring ridiculed for looking like shit. Doesn't help that the internet will immortalize any photo taken of you at a con.
>>
>>9209060
Things really were better in the olden days, before normies and SJWs started taking over conventions.

The typical normie-cosplayer do cosplay only for the attention. They know nothing or too less about the character and series what they cosplaying. I really hate this.

Conventions in this time was more familiar and meeting and have fun with other fans was more important. Today is only good cosplay quality important and many normies (not fan of a series) do only cosplay to get attention and compliments. Normie cosplayers call you as "fucking nerd" if you know more infos and deails about the character/series what the normie cosplayer wears.

The anime is not "better." The ratio between good and shit anime is always the same but thanks to the internet and distribution we get more of everything. While we get more shit we also get more good anime as well. We've went from 1 out of 5 to 20 out of 100.

Last one. Not even sure if Kaiju Big Battel is even a thing anymore. I should look into that.
>>
I miss when we were all just trying to figure out how to make things. There were no resources and we were finding our way in the dark. In that respect, Cosplay has kind of grown to be what it is because of our own constant desire to improve our work and make cooler things. Some people had the opportunity to capitalize on it, if even for a short time.

The one thing I do miss that I don't feel as much anymore is the general friendliness. We were all huge nerds hanging out for the weekend and celebrating our nerdy interests.

Also, anime and western media rarely mixed. When Kingdom Hearts was announced, it seemed otherworldly and unheard of to mix Disney with Final Fantasy. There were a lot of people who were staunchly against it, like it was heresy. These days, you can't go 5 feet at an anime con without seeing a Disney Princess. That was not the case back then.

I still love cons, I still love going to them and traveling for them. It's been an interesting ride watching them change.

The mixture of western stuff is a huge turn off for me, and I think that's responsible in part for contributing to the influx of normies. I was rabidly against Kingdom Hearts when it was announced (still never played one). There's always been comic and sci-fi cons for people to cosplay and geek out over, but the anime con niche was so cozy and tight back in the day - not the case anymore.

I still go to cons, and I still have fun, but I miss the genuinely nerdy vibe that was felt at them. That vibe is gone today. Replaced instead with literal attention whoring. On more than one occasion I've actually been made fun of at anime conventions for liking anime.

I try to strike up conversations about anime with people at cons now, and there is about a 50/50 chance they won't know of a single anime aside from something hella mainstream that they don't even watch. They just came to show off their LoL cosplay they bought online, or the like.

What cons used to be like:
>Oh hey cool, you're cosplaying a character from an anime I really like! That's so cool! What got you into that show? Have you seen this other show that's like it?

Is now:
>LOOK AT MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE~ Here's my card. Like, subscribe, follow, etc. Do I watch what?? Uh - no.

This pretty much sums up how it is for me as well. And it'll probably never be this way again. The beginning of the end seemed to be around 2010 for me, honestly.

I remember the normies started showing up around 2007-2008, but they hadn't influenced things yet. I think League of Legends and Blizzard in general had a bigger influence on the decline than Kingdom Hearts did.

Yeah, I haven't tried watching Excel Saga again, but I remember the first few episodes blowing my mind back in the day, then it started to drag a lot in the middle. I think the standouts I can remember were the "American Animation" ep, and maybe the Fist of the North Star / Digi Charat crossover. But you're right, I'm sure I'd be covering my eyes and turning away at some of the LOL RANDUM stuff they did.

I remember at the time, maybe 2005(?), noticing a threshold (I think I even wrote about it in my 'con report' [I actually used to write those and post them on my Geocities page!]) when the dealers room was starting to sell more Japanese clothes: like pseudo-rave gear, decora-inspired stuff, and the younger, hipper, more good-looking people started showing up to cons in higher numbers. Not sure how they were related, but it seemed to happen about the same time. Now every con you go to will have at least one booth with etsy-esque designer respirators and facemasks, or colorful rave tails and boots or whatever.

Found a few more stray shots

Haha, yeah, there weren't very many cons back then. I did those goofy con reviews back in the day too, but I think most of that junk was on LJ. I went back and looked at my LJ a couple of weeks ago and was met by so much cringe.

It's a nutty contrast from then to now, because there were so many booths devoted to those furry tails, raver things, Yaya's cat ears, and steampunk this year. I feel like anime is being pushed out more and more. A lot of people will disagree, though.

Also back then, we didn't have the dudebros looking for easy lays. The thirsty guys were a little more subtle about their shit, probably because of social awkwardness.

Yeah, if I went back and found my old con reports, I'd probably die from embarrassment.

I think it's been said already, but with respect to raver and steampunk and Western cosplay, with more mainstream recognition of different fandoms, there's that blurring effect. It's an inclusive, generalizing effect on all fandoms. I don't remember "geek culture" being a thing until it was fabricated. Now being a "geek" constitutes being a fan of Dr. Who, Star Wars, Star Trek, comic books, video games, etc.
That's all well and good, and wasn't uncommons before, but to make a broad stroke here, you've got the masses of fans with only superficial interest in *everything*. So that's why all cons are are just getting smoothed out into the same exact experience. Maybe?

Once the cosplay scene became so competitive with big prizes for competitions and people who make a living off cosplay. Not just the cosplayers themselves but the people who make and sell props/costumes/ect it became a much more cutthroat field. Which is great for the overall quality of costumes but not so good for the community.

Way back in the early days nobody knew WTF they were doing. We didn't have massive tutorials or resources to build upon. We didn't know what "looked good" so to speak. Nor did most of us even care. Competition was for the masquerade and even then it was for a certificate or some dealers room loot. Most people competed for fun, shits and giggles, something to do at the con.

Eventually people began sharing tutorials on how they made things. Threads on cosplay.com were a popular way of telling everyone how you made stuff.

Eventually people started providing their services and expertices in different fields. Katie Bair for example came along and revolutionized cosplay wigs/hair. Before her, we used Halloween wigs and sprayed them the color we needed. Eventually we found out you could dye wigs by coloring them with sharpies. Then someone tried out acrylic ink and alcohol, Then people started having chinese factories produce wigs in various colors and premade styles.

Armor was made of duct tape and cardboard, then foam, then worbla came along, then we figured out from foam you could buy foam in huge sheets at the hardware store and create amazing things out of it for cheap.

We cut up old clothes, closet cosplayed, pieced together patterns, drafted patterns. Then companies start making patterns catering to us. Cosplayers started making and distributing their own patterns.

Out of lots of photos and trial and error we learned that holy shit, this fabric looks better, you can spend 10,000 hours beading things and impress everyone.

And then social media happened, youtube happened, information spread like wildfire.

The bar was low when I started. Now, the bar is set extremely high for beginners because of how much information and resources are available. If you fuck up, shame on you for not spending 2 minutes researching. Whereas I wandered around in the dark starting out.

Alright, I'll be honest here. I tend to judge people's costumes a bit more harshly if I see them online vs. when I see them at a con.
My feelings of meeting and talking to a fellow fan usually tend to trump judgement of how their costume looks. I need to try to apply those same feelings while I'm online I suppose.
>>
>>9216588
Yeah, the Amano-inspired FF cosplays were so over the top. I think they became a bit of a turning point because it gave many people creativity with detail.

Also back then we didn't really care too much about how awful a cosplay was. Just as long as it wasn't absolutely disgusting.

Shit is confirmation bias. The super friendly people are out there in droves its just you've ignored them or don't really remember them as strongly as the groups that snuffed you.

I started going to cons and cosplaying in 1999. If you avoid large cons, I find a lot of people are still genuinely friendly and nerdy, and will be excited about talking about the series you're cosplaying. It also helps to cosplay from a less popular series, or to avoid sexy cosplay. I do miss those days, but overall it's more fun to be able to find nerdy folks easily.

I think PayPal is what really revolutionized cosplay for me. Being able to get thermoplastic, better fabric and wigs, and Japanese pattern books really catalyzed the sudden advance. Before that, you had to find an expensive importer and call them with your credit card info, which was rather risky.

Next time I go to my parents' house, I'll dig up my 1999 disposable camera photos to share

Going back to a certian point, you could only find pink wigs at halloween and costume shops. Mailing things might take forever, shops didn't take paypal and nobody trusted entering their credit card into online shops back then. So a lot of people would use colored hairspray in their natural hair or go with natural hair period. Finding the wigs you needed was nearly impossible even on Ebay at one point, believe it or not and they'd all come in the same neon colors and two or three styles.

>Who is still active? Some are now very popular cosplayers.

Alisachan did tease sites and then I saw her in some performance art where a dude used a sander or something to make whatever she was wearing spark. I honestly didn't get a good look cause it wasn't till after it was over that i realized who she was.

Derek has moved on to SuperMan cosplaying
TristenCitrine from SailorJamboree works for Funimation now.
Lindze still cosplays and now is an esthetician.
Pikmin Link just had a baby and still cosplays
Adella had a baby a year or so ago and still cosplays occasionally
Lillyxandra runs FireflyPath making extravagant dresses
LordMasamune is a voice actor now.

What I miss about old anime is the traditional cel animation, I still like modern anime and digital techniques can look pretty amazing when done right, and back then there was also anime with very low budget and bad animation (like most TV series), just like today. But still I feel something was lost in the process of making animation 100% digital. It's understandable though, but I miss it.

I can remember a conversation with a fellow con-goer about how weird we both thought it was to cosplay from western comics or movies at an Anime convention. (I'm still pretty weirded out by people cosplaying characters played by actors.) Nowadays it's just normal to go to an anime convention and to be surrounded by 100 Tony Starks or whatever movie/superhero comic is popular right now.

The influence of normies does have a 'bright sight', since more and more people are coming out for their nerd-side (i.e. confessing they really like Star Wars or reading comics). However, these normies still don't seem to fully understand anime, or respect fellow 'nerds' with an interest in it. In my country anime conventions are starting to focus more and more on normies. It seems as if anime is just a little extra instead of the main thing of the convention.

I stopped going to cons for this reason. 2015 was the last year I went and I honestly don't feel as if I'm missing anything new. Compared to the first time I went (2008), when my first Anime convention was basically an anime only thing, cons have now turned into a 'Look at me I'm pretty and have a nice costume LIKE MY FB PAGE' competition.
It's sad, but times change I guess.
>>
>>9221081
Why not just make an exclusively anime con? Anime itself is more than popular enough by now to prop it up. Over here in Germany we have the Animexx local cons. They're really small, but usually hard focused on anime.
>>
>>9221081
Are you in the UK? Mcm is normie central and the anime is shoved off towards the side/back and western franchises slap bang in the middle. This counts for cosplayers too, half the anime meets are inside at the far end of the halls.
>>
>>9220129
Nah anon I feel you. The opening motorbike and bar scene from Akira is still probably my favorite bit of animation ever. There was something that made hand drawn cels feel more real than digital animation. The worlds of anime old just felt more concrete and believable to me. I still like modern anime and admire a lot of the art styles, but it just doesnt have the same feeling as it used to.

Also this thread is such a treat. Im feeling nostalgic now. I recently realized that my first con was ten years ago labor day weekend. Kumoricon fucking 06. Its weird how fast shit changes. I remember waking up at 5 am so I could get in the reg line at a decent time to get a badge, and that was before pre reg was a thing there yet. I met a lot of friends that I still talk and hang with today. But it certainly was a different world.
>>
>>9218529

Out of these people, there's only a handful that I still talk to or see, or have seen anywhere in the last 5-7 years.

Beverly had a baby and I've not heard her mention cosplay much at all in a long time.

I see pictures of Jia cosplaying with another friend of mine on the west coast, so she's still active.

Limebarb doesn't cosplay anymore and barely goes to any conventions. Her Lemonbrat business is still around.

God, the last time I saw StripperVash, he was still emceeing masquerades and that was a number of years ago.

Kevin Lillard still takes convention/cosplay pictures at various small Midwest cons, but I've not seen him in person since he had the heart attack all those years ago. It's good to see him around and at it though.

>The worlds of anime old just felt more concrete and believable to me. I still like modern anime and admire a lot of the art styles, but it just doesnt have the same feeling as it used to.

That's because 99% of modern anime sanitizes the settings they use to hypergloss levels of polish. A normal high school can't just be a normal high school, it must be on a level beyond one that the most enthusiastic principal could force the students to clean and wax to. In the past, this simply couldn't be achieved because hand drawing necessarily made everything a little smudged and dirty. Now in the digital world this is perfectly possible.

Some anime deliberately avoid this by making everything a little messy and grimy. The one that sticks out in my head would be Another, a murder mystery anime from a few years ago. That anime did it to add to the horror though.

>cons have now turned into a 'Look at me I'm pretty and have a nice costume LIKE MY FB PAGE' competition.

I think Team Fortress 2 had a big impact a bit before League picked up steam. It was one of the first PC games to have strong, stylized 3D character designs after years and years of games aiming for realism. Naturally a lot of cosplay came out of TF2 and for some reason it showed up in anime cons more than comic cons or gaming cons.

I've seen this described often, as the cool kids joining in and their reaction is "this is some cool stuff! who let the NERDS in?"

Ah yes. Memories. Anyone remember going on to A Fan's View to get con pics after attending a convention because that was literally the only site you'd find them on if you didn't take any yourself?
>>
>>9231053

Yeah, I really appreciated Kevin's efforts. A lot of my costume pics on my Geocities site were taken by him.

Also if I couldn't make it to a con going to his site was a good way to feel like I was there. I can't even say that about con pics I see now. Frequently people only take pics of their friends, the few series they know, or it's all photoshoots taking outside of the con.

Weird question, but
If you had a time machine and could go back to a con any year in the 90's or the first half of the 2000's and cosplay there, would you?
And would you bring your best, most detailed cosplay to the scene, recieveng all the praise? or would you cosplay something freely, making friends along the way?
