This might not be the right place, but I figured you guys would know more than /jp/. I was wondering if anyone knows any good places to shop for yukata and kimono in the Tokyo-Yokohama area? I am looking to go on a day long shopping trip to look at as many stores as I can find, I would especially love to see some more modern or unique designs!

Also just talking about them in the thread is fine too!

I've never been to japan, born and raised a westerner but I love to see people dressed in traditional Kimono and yukata!

I've always wanted to attend a Lunar festival in one~

General question for the thread; Is it rude for a white person/ anyone that is not Asian to wear a Kimono? I'm not talking about for everyday fun, but for some sort of event/convention?

Just curious!

Are you looking for new or used? I always recommend that you look for thrift stores in the area. You can pick up very nice (even silk) kimono and accessories for much much less than buying new. When I was in Kyoto I went to the Chicago Thrift Store, the whole second floor was kimono. They have a storefront in Harajuku, you should try there.
If you're just looking for new yukata (much more affordable really) then I suggest walking around shopping malls or train station shopping centers. I know I saw at least three kimono stores in the 3 hours I spent in Shinjuku.

NO.
It isn't. Asian diaspora in America might give you shit for it, because SJW etc etc fuck your white privilege, but it is NOT an issue with Japanese culture. Native Japanese encourage the spread and appreciation of Japanese culture globally. I've never encountered an actual Japanese person that was bothered by my collecting or wearing of kimono. In fact, every Japanese person I've talked to on the subject has been extremely happy that I'm interested in it. Kimono is not a cultural dress of religious significance, it is JUST CLOTHES. It's important to wear it correctly, and understand the different TPO of different types of kimono, but kimono was just the very day clothes of Japan up until the 1930s. There's no great symbolic meaning or anything like that. Also, the kimono industry is dwindling. If you can afford to invest in kimono you are helping perpetuate that culture and a dying art form.
>>
>>9208968
One of my dreams is to wear a yukata for Tanabata, so now that I live here even if it is too late for Tanabata I at least want to get one for next year! And no, they will probably just compliment you and get excited, Japanese girls find foreigners interesting, especially if you have really white skin or long legs, they love it.

>>9208970
Something affordable, whether it's new or used doesn't matter to me either way, but used would be cheaper most likely. A new yukata would be great too, since they tend to be pretty affordable from what I've seen. I already have Chicago on the list.

I saw online somewhere that AEON supposedly has a pretty nice line, but I don't know where I would actually get them because the website isn't very helpful. Would just any of their departments stores be likely to have one or?
>>
>>9208974
>Would just any of their departments stores be likely to have one or?
Yes, most likely. I think every department store I went into had a kimono store. Say goodbye to your money though, that shit is expensive. Do you speak any Japanese? The old women in the kimono stores seldom speak much English.
>>
>>9208976
Yeah, I am about on the JLPT N3 level, so I can talk to them fine. I have a lot of trouble reading Japanese websites and stuff though since Im pretty bad with kanji and all the text sort of blends together in my view so I don't know what section I should be focusing on without reading every single thing. According to the English site I found the AEON ones are supposed to be pretty cheap though, but it doesn't mention where to buy them, just links to the jp site.
>>
>>9208980
Department store websites are garbage. Yea I would say just go by the department store. You might be able to find a directory for the specific Aeon mall to find out if they have a kimono store and what floor it's on. Since the line is by Aeon, I would assume they sell them out of all of their malls though. Do a little research on the type of kimono you want to buy first though. Synthetic or silk, level of formality, etc. The ladies in the store will be very helpful with making a coordination and making sure you have everything you need if you explain that this is your first kimono. N3 should be just fine, but review some kimono specific vocabulary before you go of course.
>>
>>9208936
Used kimono is SO much cheaper. I've only purchased them from Yahoo Japan, but some of the online stores also have physical storefronts as well. You can probably get everything you need for under $200 or so. Just keep in mind that you need much more than just an obi and a kimono.
>>
>>9208995
What all do you need? The main part and obi, plus like shoes and a bag or is there more?
>>
>>9209000
Yukata are more simple that kimono, which is why they are worn on hot summer days.
For a yukata, I'd say the main outer layer, obi, shoes (though now a days it's OK to go without) is the bare minimum. Bag, accessories, and all the padding is optional.

Sometimes people get tools that aren't shown on the outside, but they help keep everything in place.

>gratz on the trips
>>
>>9209000
Oh man. You need a nujaban (undergarment), an eri (collar), an ojimakura (obi pillow), datejime, karihimo, obijime, obiage, Look up Immortal Geisha's old forum. They have tons of good info for beginners.
>>
>>9208936

Am I going to look like a dick if I wear haori with normal (alt fashion) in Japan?

Mind you, I'll only wear them while in areas I'll be wearing alt fashion anyway, so between shibuya/harajuku/shinjuku.
>>
>>9208936
There's a used kimono shop in Asakusa called Tansuya, and I believe it's the largest shop of 'recycled' kiminos. They have new ones too in there, but if you're looking for some decent prices, they will have them.

>>9208968
>>9208974
I wore a yukata during Tanabata last year, and I am white. If anyone said anything negative, it was out of ear shot, but most locals seemed really appreciative of it. The ryokan I was staying at, the woman was really happy saying she was hoping that it would make the local teenagers think it was 'cool' to wear their traditional clothing again, since most Japanese have stopped wearing yukatas and kimonos.
Just make sure you have it on properly. Wear an undergarment, make sure the length is appropriate around the ankles, and no lower neck/clavicle area showing. I went with a group, and someone dressed themselves in their yukata with no undergarment or anything, and we went to an accessory store for hair pieces, and the sales woman actually pulled us aside to fix the yukata so they were appropriate.
>>
>>9209021
Haori are just coats. There's no taboo with wearing them with casual fashion. I pair it with regular clothes all the time.
>>
>>9208968
>Is it rude for a white person/ anyone that is not Asian to wear a Kimono? I'm not talking about for everyday fun, but for some sort of event/convention?
If you wear it to an anime con you'll just look like a massive weeb who is trying to cosplay japanese people or something, and Japanese americans will hate you. But generally Japanese people don't mind it, they might think it's a bit weird. Some japanese designers are actively trying to encourage Westerners to wear it.
>>
>>9209040
I'm just wondering if people will be all "Silly gaikokujin, wearing haori just because she's in Japan!" When they're a regular part of my normies wardrobe too, haha.
>>
>>9209068
I'm gonna be real here. No one really gives a fuck about what you're wearing. Sure they might laugh or point, but at the end of the day everyone cares more about themselves than other people.

Does anyone have any styling inspo? I'm not sure if there are different styles, but I like something like in the picture.

When I was last in Japan I was too chicken shit to buy a simple kimono because I'm a little wary of backlash from sjw, even though I know japanese people appreciate our interest.

I feel shitty for not supporting that designer when I had a chance, feels bad.

>If you wear it to an anime con you'll just look like a massive weeb who is trying to cosplay japanese people or something, and Japanese americans will hate you

Honestly the loudest people you hear about this is the occasional non japanese asian american and whites. I've never had anyone speak for me as much as someone not my race saying they know what's best for me as a ''''PoC''''.
>>
>>9209068

You're going to be a silly gaijin no matter what and that's the beauty of being a foreigner in Japan.

I wore lolita every day in Japan and I know i looked super weird to Japanese, but no fucks given because I know they would have cared anyways. It's this weird thing where I know they think I'm weird anyways so might as well go all out and live my weeb dreams.
>>
My grandma was around the only time I could go Kimono shopping and she literally was just like "No, I have a whole closet of them", and there's nothing I can do but go through hand-me-down patterns from the 60s.

And no, it's not fucking rude for a white person to wear a kimono. The Japanese don't wear them much outside of taking photos, just make sure it's on right. If anyone is going to talk shit, they won't do it in front of you anyway. Most people will literally not give a fuck. Just make sure you look boxy as shit, don't pull around your waist too hard.
>>
>>9209212
Retro patterns are still wearable imo. With kimonos, it's harder to look 'dated' since no one really knows all the rules anymore.
>>
>>9209214
Yeah, you can pretty much pull off anything and make it look good np matter the age.

Personally, I have a thing for geometrics/art deco/art nouveau patterns and Meiji/Edo style contrast collars. Love love love those.
>>
>>9209227
Same. All the floral kimonos start looking the same after awhile.
>>
>>9208968
If you were attending certain festivals in Japan, you may find yourself encouraged to wear one.

Remember, were it not for extreme cultural appropriation, the Japanese would have never traded with the Dutch if I remember correctly.

Weddings and festivals are the only times I can think that wearing such an outfit isn't strange socially.
>>
>>9209406
Don't forget that the kimono wouldn't have existed if the Japanese didn't "appropriate" from the Chinese.

The main thing that confuses me is how to adjust for unusual foot wear. I love kimono looks with heels and boots but do you need to adjust the hem at a different length to make it work?
>>
>>9209779
The general rule is to make the hem ankle length, but honestly as long as it looks good it doesn't matter for casual wear. It's actually stylish to have the hem much higher now. Plus it's a lot easier to walk in with a higher hem.

Kimonos are pretty much one size unless you're super obese. You just adjust the length of it to suit your tastes. If you're tall, most kimonos will probably be mid leg length on you.
>>
>>9211345
There aren't any longer ones? I like ankle length but. I would probably have to buy like a newer yukata or something rather than a vintage one though I assume. I am super tall and skinny so I would like to get one that fits right.

>>9211350
Yeah you'd have to find new ones that are longer. I've seen some around 170 cm, so I'm sure there's longer ones out there.

Once upon a time, I found a 185cm furisode. It was that long because it was brand new, and so new that the hem was not trimmed yet. Usually they trim before selling, so the seller thought it might have been a display, or prototype.

In the end I didn't get it, since it was over $400 Canadian. I was hoping to save money until I can afford it, but the day I came back to it with money in my hands, it was gone.

>>
>>9213933
Towels and tie em with Himo.
Also there's a plastic plate u can buy to put between ur obi
>>
>>9211410
First thing to remember kimono sizing has a bit of leeway(10cm under / 10cm over) and also wearing it nowadays isn't as rigid as 10 years ago, so you can tweak a too small yukata to suit you.

So what you could do is:
A: Get a TL yukata(usually go to 170cm) and wear it with a fake ohashori sewn in, or go without one.
B: Get a plus size yukata, which usually will be long enough but it could be too big around.
C: Get a custom yukata made for you, kimono poncho on etsy is pretty good.

Don't be put off by your height! There is a youtuber who is that height who does kimono vids called chayatsuji kimono. I think she has done a video dealing with that issue as well.

Does anyone have their own kimono coords to share?

Very cute, I like the sort of retro style with the hairstyle and hat and boots, it feels kind of like a taisho era girl or something!

Excuse the wrinkles but I got this for a couple bucks and I'm wondering what it is

It's shorter than a yukata along with sleeves like a happi so I was thinking it might be a jacket.
It also has a pocket on one side.
or maybe it's some disgusting american pig attempt at a kimono, I have no idea.

so tacky but i still like it

Seems like it's just a regular American 'kimono', but the sleeves are too faithful to real kimono to be one. Might also be a haori but they don't have pockets. It's not a happi coat for sure. You've found some strange mutation anon.

A "real" kimono most often have a seam down the back.

It also says its made in japan on the tag but that's also written in english. also a stamp on the tag in kanji. Thank you though, I'll be sure to look cute while still appropriating japanese culture when wearing it.

Any fans of geta worn with western clothing here? I saw some older Japanese movies where some of the men and women were wearing geta with suits and casual clothes and thought it was a neat reversal of the western shoes with kimono look.

I'm tempted to buy a pair for daily wear, but they can be uncomfortable if your feet aren't used to it.
