anyone ever did a nanchatte meetup? how many people? what did it consist of? i'd like to wear nanchatte in public with a few friends and some advice on cute appro pros things to do would be nice!
>>
This kind of style has always appealed to me, but in high school my mom was not cool with me wearing Jfash (but she was cool with me dressing like a lame emo kid???)

But as an adult I have the freedom to wear basically whatever I want. I'm 24 and not in school, I run a business. So idk....am I too old to be dressing like this?

Same with Lolita, I have always loved and adored how lovely and expressive it is, but by the time I could afford the dresses and what not, I feel outdated.

sorry for long post!
>>
>>9186196
24?? Too old? No way!! I'm not sure if you're familiar with the term of jk cafes, it's basically like inbetween maid and kyabakura. It's girls in their 20's to 30's dressing up as school girls. Also it's very popular amomg Japanese girls in their twenties to wear cute school girl outfits while going shopping

What I wore today. It's more ~heavily inspired~ than actual nanchatte I think.. turtleneck and wedge flats as opposed to a collared shirt and loafers. (Not that there are hard and fast rules, but I'm a bit of a prescriptivist.) Sorry for the mess, I didn't take the photo with the intent of posting online.
>>
>>9187071
Sorry, but this whole outfit is a mess. The shoes are probably the worst here and the knee highs don't do you any favor
>>
>>9187071
>>9187098
True, the shoes are way too twee, but I wouldn't scrap the entire outfit. Definitely ditch the blue turtleneck and bow.
>>
>>9186071
the link doesn't work can someone fix it?
>>
>>9187121
The bow is nice, but get a blouse in this color. And well new shoes and a different style of socks
>>
>>9187071
the hair makes you look like an actual child , not preppy
the turtle neck needs to be a blouse, the jumper makes you look like a blob and your socks need to hit higher, and try a mule not a pump
>>
>>9187098
"a whole mess"... lol seriously guys? the cardigan and pleated skirt look really nice; the knee highs and shoes aren't bad either-- i'd just ditch the turtleneck for an actual blouse, if you really want to wear the bow.
>>
>>9187071
The cardigan and skirt look okay, shoes definitely need to go though. If you want the bow you need to wear a blouse.

Agree about the socks but to be honest so many nanchatte cardigans are unflattering anyways, I don't see it as an issue.

I would probably

>swap out the turtleneck for a blouse
>tights or otks would be nice. But honestly I think part of why it looks unflattering is your posture too. Not a big deal tho
>I like the shoes just not necessarily in nanchatte. I see them as more generally cute, but not preppy. Swap for loafers or mary janes?

Anyway, here is some OC so anon is not getting swamped with comments. Just a basic coord with a bodyline skirt I wore to a fair this week.

Yo!
I looked through the list.
What I'm looking for is an outfit so I can cosplay Tome(pictured).

Lawarashop seemed ok, but then they didn't have my size ( a Small).

I can't do that mail proxy thing unfortunately, so I can only use the overseas websites...

If you guys can suggest anything, lemme know!
I looked on ebay and amazon, and there was only shit there...
I'm not really an online buyer expert or anything so it'd be appreciated!
>>
>>9188381
Bodyline will have it, anon
>>
>>9187071
That sweater just needs to go. It doesn't flatter or fit you and looks really masculine honestly.

Your bow is really loose? Tighten it or invest in a tie or something.

Get rid of that weird blue turtleneck. It doesn't fit period. At all. Never use it in nanchatte again unless you want to get it wrong.

Your legs would benefit from tights.

Get some real loafers. They aren't hard to get at all. Whatever those flat dress shoes are, I'd just avoid them in j-fashion period.

Do not wear that bow. It fits nothing in the look.

Just totally rethink your hairstyle from square one. Consider bangs and absolutely do not pull back your hair in this manner. Styling is important.

Hope that helps!

Selfposting, I wore this with brown loafers (the ones from bodyline) and pale socks. Any suggestions for legwear?

Also sorry for grainy picture.
>>
>>9188920
I'd suggest getting some tights the same color as your blazer. Your legs look a bit bare right now and it makes the skirt look kind of awkward.
>>
>>9188920
Which loafers did you get? I was thinking of getting the s525 in brown, but I wasn't sure of the quality.
>>
>>9188920
I'm all for loosed socks in nanchatte, but that's just a personal preference. I love to wear loosed socks because they make me appear shorter and I love that
>>
>>9188536
Oh, thank you!
Wait hmmm... they don't have any smalls, only like 4L...how often do they restock?
>>
>>9189061
Bodyline restocked really randomly, see if they have any similar products?

>>9188968
>>9189033
Thank you both! I just bought OTKs the other day, but maybe I'll get some black tights too. For loose socks, do you mean slightly scrunched up or full Kogal style?

>>9188989
I had gotten the old loafers before body line changed shoes to "s---". They're good quality, originally bought for a K-on cosplay. They don't scuff too much but they get those weird creases that all fake leather does. They're a little loose, so I would size up.
>>
>>9189090
Full kogal!! My longest loosed socks are over 1.50m and they're pure love. Could slap myself for not buying two or 500pairs but just one back then

Bows belong under collared shirts. They always look out of place and loose without them. OTK socks would work a lot better, as well as a more flattering hairstyle.

Something about this looks off, I think it's just the overall fit.

>>9188920

Something like this would look better, IMO. Go for a blouse instead of the turtleneck.. you can still do the blue but try another bow and skirt plus loafers over those flats.

Is it one of the elements or just how they're together in general? The sweater, for example, is on the thinner side and has a wider v-neck so it doesn't look as nice as it should.

>>9190345
Aaaah, thank you! I just picked up the blouse at Goodwill. The fabric is slightly textured (like little pinstripes) and I'm not sure how to feel about that. However, it fits my measurements to a T so I do like wearing it.

I have that same skirt/bow combination from Bodyline, but I think I am significantly taller than you, so it's about two inches above my knees. I'll wear it (and what is pictured) tomorrow.

I'm a teacher at a Japanese private school (not English, lol). I wore uniforms through most of my time in school, both in Japan and in the United States. I wear nanchatte seifuku to work now, because my administration doesn't care. Public schools certainly would, and I skated around the edges when I worked in public schools and sort of got away with it. I have my own Japanese JHS sailor uniform I've taken good care of, but my US high school was your typical public school, no uniform affair. I look way younger than I am, by like, more than a decade. So I figure why the hell not. In addition to my actual uniforms (winter and summer) from JHS, I've got some random stuff from Kuri-Ori, Conomi, and Bodyline. Also preppy shit from Ralph Lauren, J. Press, Brooks Brothers, that kinda stuff that fits in well with the trend.
>>
>>9191490
Absolutely gorgeous coordination! I love everything, and I'm super jealous you get to wear nanchatte casually and to work. I'm working freelance from home so my uniforms just hang in my closet.
>>
>>9191673
Hey, I work from home too and I'm still wearing nanchatte today :)

>>9191490
Can I ask where you got your bag? I've been shopping around for one, but they all seem not to have d-rings on the sides (like for a shoulder strap) from the photos.
>>
I love nanchatte, but I have such a problem with skirts.
>if it fits my waist, it'll be too short because I got a fat ass
>if it covers my ass, the waist is cow sized

I think my only option is longer winter skirts, anyone have suggestions? I have one, but I prefer the shorter skirts because they're so much cuter.

What is everyone's opinion on wearing plain colored shirts underneath cardigans instead of blouses? I have two blouses, but sometimes I just want to be ultra casual and wear a plain white tee.
>>
>>9191712
There are skirts with a little shirring that might work for you.

Also, anyone suggestions for yankee length skirts?

>>9191712
I have a fat ass too, but I normally don't have an issue with skirt length. If anything, the skirts I find are always too long. How tall are you?

And it's pretty easy to take in the waist on pleated skirts.

Also my opinion on the t-shirt is don't. There's no way that won't look sloppy. If you want to be ultra casual in nanchatte, just unbutton the collar of your blouse and loosen the ribbon (or take it off), like Mikako in pic related.

What bag do you guys prefer? The "leather" type or the "sport" type...? I really can't decide myself
>>
>>9191772
I like both. I'm going to get a sport bag to use as a casual/gym bag, and a nicer black leather look one to use on less casual occasions.
>>
>>9191712
Don't do the tshirt thing, always take sth that'd resemble a blouse
>tshirt with a collar (?)
>poloshirt
At my Japanese school we were allowed to not wear blouses everyday during summer, so if it was white or just slightly offwhite and could resemble a blouse it was ok
>>
>>9191693
Do you wear full nanchatte at home? I was thinking to just wear a blouse, skirt and socks but I'm not really sure. I want to look casual but not sloppy
>>
>>9191815
I don't have AC here in my home office so I've been wearing summery stuff until now. It was cold this morning so I threw on a blouse, tie, sweater vest, skirt and socks. If I had a pair of house slippers I'd be wearing those too.
>>
>>9190782
how you doin ;^) ?
>>
>>9191693

It's my actual bag, so I didn't choose it. It's in REALLY bad condition, I hid the strap in the picture that is frayed and snapped and being held together by one of those super tight clips/vises. The brand is PalBag though, and it's just the navy/navy combination:

http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/miniyama/item/1019759/

I should REALLY replace it, but then it wouldn't have my logo on it. Sentimental value and all that.
>>
>>9191984
Thanks anon!

I ultimately decided to get the stripey arConomi bag I posted about earlier for a couple of reasons (including that I realized I can remove or flip the logo pocket and add D-rings), but yours seems to be the nicest navy-on-navy bag I've seen and if I decide to get one in the future, that will be it.

Now to play the SAL waiting game.
>>
>>9193387

I went on Monday to look at the arConomi bag at the Conomi store in Harajuku. I really like the size, but I don't like the logo either, and I don't like the stripeyness, which is the whole thing you liked. When my PalBag is completely dead, I'll replace it with the logoless one from the link I have above.

I forgot to do the floor style presentation of what I'm wearing today, but it's pretty boring. I'll do it up tonight. I don't like taking pictures of myself, even with something over my face or whatnot, I don't want to get doxxed.
>>
>>9191490
>I have that same skirt/bow combination from Bodyline, but I think I am significantly taller than you, so it's about two inches above my knees. I'll wear it (and what is pictured) tomorrow.
It's possible; I'm 5'5" for reference.

Your coord is freaking adorable. I think my favourite is how the yellow bow you chose picks up the yellow from the plaid in the skirt. And the grey blazer with it is just perfect, unf. It's awesome that you can wear this every day, that's super lucky!
>>
>>9193745

Yep, I'm 5'10, very, VERY tall for a woman in Japan. But I'm still super thin, 24 inch waist, minor amounts of boobage, no hips, shoulders wider than I'd like (inherited from my mother). It makes shopping in this country difficult, especially for shirts. They never fit. :/ I wear a lot of male shirts and use the skirts to cinch, because while the upper half is good, the bottom has way too much material. I've started adding creases in the back of my shirts to make them tighter around my waist.
>>
>>9193626
Yeah, I was torn because I wanted one that would double as a gym bag (I go running at a track near me) but that I could wear with nanchatte as well. I think the stripes lend it a fun sporty feeling so I went for it. But the conservative, understated look of the PalBag is so nice, especially with your outfit.

So I put together and bought my first nanchatte outfit. For some reason my phone would let me add the picture of the loafers I bought. The entire thing cost me 100 dollars. I got the Uniqlo cardigan in XXL so it would be more long and baggy like you see with nanchatte. The blouse I also got from Uniqlo in white. The rest I got from Aliexpress.

It looks nice, but it's not nanchatte. You need a collared shirt, and those sort of split direction pleats would only work in a pullover-jumper kind of combination look. Maybe something like this.

Although even that would be unusual. While box pleat jumpers are fairly common, they're usually single colors, gray or navy. I think I've only seen plaid in anime. Usually with a black or white blazer.

Not criticism of your style, it looks good to me as an outfit. It just isn't uniformish enough for nanchatte.

this looks so nice anon, really great quality. I think I'd prefer a slightly deeper red ribbon myself with this but that could just be personal preference - I think it adds to the sophisticated look.
>>
>>9206571
dang, that's an impressive collection
>>
>>9206585

...it's just my closet. It's not really a "collection." It's just what I wear. Ironically, I didn't realise this was a thing until someone mentioned it to me, and I did a search on google with "nanchatte" and ended up here.

I went to private schools in the US, except for high school. So my own Japanese JHS uniforms aside (since in Japan nearly every school has uniforms, except for the schools that caused the nanchatte trend in the first place!), this is literally just how I dress. I'm a prep, preppy, prepster whatever it's called. I've got like six pairs of boat shoes. >.>

So it just so happens that I was nanchatte before it was nanchatte. :3
>>
>>9206583

Well, pretty much the overwhelming color, in my view, is maroonish-red. True enough, the lines in the skirt are definitely red, but I was feeling more... Gryffindor color inspired, I suppose.
>>
>>9206583

Oh, derp. You were talking about the summer sailor fuku. Honestly, that's not even what I ACTUALLY wore with it, which was a orangish-brown scarf/neckerchief (goes with the winter uniform, too). So you might well be right, a deeper red would be more serious. But this is quite fun.
>>
>>9206603
I think you may be referencing the wrong outfit there anon
>>
>>9206606

Yeah, I caught that, see the post below. Incidentally, here's the winter uniform with the scarf/neckerchief. I was pretty happy that the school had a unique-ish color. White and navy is SO boring.

You can't really call it nanchatte if they're actually their real uniforms.
>>
>>9207186
I guess, still serves as inspiration. Some of the photos are more or less staged, as in photo shoots.
The photos from Japan on that website are mostly from school catalogues, scans of old photos from ~90s, or class photos.
>>
>>9207186

Well, I posted my actual sailor uniforms, but I am not a JHS student. I'm a JHS teacher. If I wear my uniform, is it nanchatte because I am not a student or is it not nanchatte because it was my assigned uniform? EXISTENTIAL CRISIS.
>>
>>9207309

Please note, some shooping has occurred to protect my identity and that of my school. But I'm always iffy about any kind of post that could identify me.

Anyone got more pink nanchatte? I'm trying to find some inspiration that's more mature than those fairy-kei looking sailor fukus
>>
>>9208306
oh my goddddd, where can i get that
>>
>>9208307
Skirt and tie are from bodyline!
>>
>>9208420

Yowch, this is why with Bodyline, you really need to check quality. That's some incredibly crappy weaving. I'd say only 30-35% of their skirts

That's cute, but those buttons aren't nanchatte, per se. Also pink is really, really rare in the actual wild. Don't see it much on actual uniforms. As a color, it's really on the border. And that match up is a bit too stark for me. Maybe with a black blazer/silver or gunmetal buttons it would tone it down enough.

And the fairy-kei sailor fuku have neither the appropriate quality (they're costumes pure and simple), and really, really make you stick out. While there are definitely nanchatte pastels and stuff that are simply a fashion, if you actually want to blend into the student population, you'd have to go far more conservative. Also, the less conservative you are, the further places where what you're wearing is considered appropriate. One of the reasons I dress in fairly conservative nanchatte is because in case I have to go somewhere more straight laced, I'll generally not be too far out of bounds.
>>
>>9208484

Derp, meant to say only 30-35% of their skirts are decent enough quality. And "inappropriate" rather than appropriate.

Different anon but I think you're being too strict. The whole appeal of nanchatte is getting to experience the carefree life of a student without having to actually stick to the strict dress code of one. There are videos that have been linked here before with school girls saying they have to change their uniforms after classes just to look cute to hang out because they can't wear eyeliner, the school colors are boring (switching a grey cardigan to a pastel or the ever trendy apricot), etc.

I don't think many of us want to drop mad cash on 100% authentic school uniforms, we just want to look cute and feel carefree because most of our school experiences were either boring or outright sucked and we took it all for granted.

If you check just about any interview with adult nanchatte, they got into this solely to experience things they couldn't/didn't as a student like going to amusement parks or cute dates with other students( aka other nanchatte).

tl;dr we care less about being 100% authentic and more towards the feel/experience of it.

Also nanchatte groups when? I'd kill to hang out with other nanchatte and go on a day trip/outing.
>>
>>9208520
Sorry, meant they can't wear makeup. Not sure why I specifically put eyeliner. I think that's my cue to go to sleep.
>>
>>9208520

I'm being strict, sure. But most of the nanchatte I am aware of is more along the lines of students who wear uniforms at a school without uniforms.

I'm not suggesting you HAVE to do any of this, one way or another. I'm just giving you my input of someone who has experience both in the back of and at the front of Japanese classrooms. This is fashion, and most of you are not in Japan, so...

Yar har, fiddle ee dee! Do what you want because a pirate is free, you are a pirate!
>>
>>9208520
>we care less about being 100% authentic

Not that anon, but that doesn't necessarily apply to everyone here, at least in the sense that it's important to learn the rules before you break them. At least in America there is a seriously declining knowledge/culture of conservative/tasteful dress (I mean, come on, we have to order basic cardigans from other countries) which leads to girls stumbling around in the dark when it comes to putting together a nice outfit.

Besides, this is the best possible place to get your outfit criticized because it's anonymous. IMO critical anon is doing a public service. As someone with a historically terrible sense of style, I appreciate it.
>>
>>9208548

I appreciate the back up. I'm not 100% authentic either, as I've said above, I mix in American preppy stuff, but I always look at my own coords based on, "could I get away with telling someone this was actually a real uniform." I start with that and THEN break rules if I feel like it.

And you can buy a lot of school-acceptable stuff from GU or Uniqlo or Gap, etc. Especially public schools which define that you must buy the base uniform, but have some level of variance on brand for sweaters and socks.

The ONLY uniforms I paid "mad cash" for are the ones I bought for my own JHS in Japan, the sailor ones. And yeah, that was expensive. Like $400 US total. But most of the stuff in my coords are much cheaper separates, but still stuff defined as appropriate.
>>
>>9208484
>>9208523
Why are you assuming that we're intending to blend in to begin with? I don't think most of us are trying to emulate real uniforms at all.
>>
>>9208567

I'm NOT assuming that. I'm saying *I* am. Some of you are misinterpreting a description of my own take on the style for dictating what OTHERS should do.

I'm not! I promise! I'm totally for people doing what they want, really. I didn't realise I need to include so many disclaimers about my opinions.
>>
>>9208577
My apologies, then. I didn't mean to put words in your mouth, but that was how I read it. Nanchatte is such a broad style, though, and one with so many mainstream alternatives it's kinda hard to reach a consensus about it.
>>
>>9208585

In fairness, you are likely not the only one. I probably wasn't clear enough. I think there are definitely subcategories of what we can call nanchatte, although I don't know if they have names.

I'm in the, "this should help me blend in during Tokyo rush hour" camp, not the "let's go hang out in Harajuku" camp. Seems to me there's a sliding scale between fairy-kei pastel color schemes and what I do, which tends to be very conservative because as someone who doesn't "look" Japanese, but is and identifies as such, I try to do my best to not be the nail, and ironically, I have found that nanchatte actually makes me MORE invisible than regular business attire.

But I was already a prep, and my summer weekend outfits are loud as hell. Greens and pinks with boat shoes, etc. But that's usually not what I want on my crushed morning subway commute.

So this is just me describing my background and philosophy of how I choose what I put on in the morning. Not telling other people what they should or shouldn't wear, just whether I would or would not. Cool? :3

>as someone who doesn't "look" Japanese, but is and identifies as such

Sorry for OT, but what does that mean exactly? Are you talking from a citizenship/national identity perspective or an ethnicity perspective? I just think it's interesting as a hafu is all.

And as for on topic stuff, I think that quality matters in nanchatte. There are a lot of ways to do it right, but like lolita and other jfashion you can tell when something is poorly constructed or cheap. Still, I like to incorporate hints of unorthodox colors like soft pinks because fashion.
>>
>>9208598
Lol we're cool. I actually though of OL wear when you went into detail and the idea of nanchatte OL seems kinda funny to me. Some of us should look into that.
>>
>>9208609

I don't look Yamato or Asian really at all. I don't think this is solely part of ethnicity. Ethnicity is sociocultural not just phenotypical/genetic. IAlso my name is Japanese, I have legal kanji, and so yeah, citizenship/nationality play a part on this. I visit the US a few times a year, and I feel far more foreign there than I do here, and people think I'm not from where I spent my childhood, because my habits, body language, etc is very Japanese. Verbally, I can code switch, and my English and Japanese, but I can't code switch my body language. It is overtly Japanese... Most Americans cannot place it is "not-American" (until they see my name), but they CAN place it as "you ain't from around here, are you?" But I am! Or I used to be. Guess not anymore. I'm American-Japanese, not Japanese-American. Amerika-kei-nihonjin, I guess. :3

And quality matters, yeah. Because if you're going to wear this stuff
>>
>>9208614

I suck at this proofreading thing. I keep accidentally hitting enter before I am finished.

...this stuff every day it should be quality or it will fall apart.
>>
>>9208610

Yeah, then people think I'm an exchange worker or an English teacher. Basically that I am a foreigner. I'm not. The assumptions are different in nanchatte, people assume I'm Japanese but with a complicated heritage/background story. Few are rude enough to ask, although old people do. Sometimes in ridiculously blatant ways like, straight up, "Is it your father or your mother" or "what percentage Yamato minzoku are you?" I utter some "Eto"s and some "Ano"s and run away. It's none of anyone's business (and I don't plan on sharing the exact details here either).

I'm not saying your concrit isn't welcome, it's just that you seem to set the bar really high for those of us that aren't in Japan. Like with anon, you mentioned the skirt and the cardigan color and even the buttons.

Yes, Bodyline is hit or miss for nanchatte but we'd don't exactly have much to choose from because even nanchatte style pleated plaid skirts can be hard to find (at least here in Murica) so it's either Bodyline or Taobao unless you want to pay prices for the authentic stuff from Japan.

The color and buttons on the cardigan is basically what got me because "The buttons aren't nanchatte and the color is really rare in the wild" which might apply to Japan but anyone Western wearing this would be more than authentic enough because we don't exactly have much of a private school/school uniform culture here unless it's a Catholic school or now a days most under-16 students have to wear khaki pants/khaki skirts and dress shirts in their school colors as uniforms.

>>9208548
Oh I'm not saying to ignore the rules or anything, their advice is really helpful but I meant was we don't care about being 100% authentic as in shelling out a ton of money for Conami or something as opposed to just getting a nice skirt that has the same look from Taobao or even Bodyline. That and we care less about having every exact detail be authentic, like appropriate cardigan buttons or realistic ties as opposed to the more fashion friendly ones you see in some Taobao shops.

tl;dr I love having someone from Japan who wears nanchatte here to give us concrit, I just wanted to let them know that when they offer that concrit though, to please keep in mind that we're not really trying for 100% authenticity and we don't have easy/reasonably priced access to the same things they do so for us, it's often Bodyline, Taobao, or Western sites like eBay or even Target for cardigans/shoes.

>a nice skirt

That's the problem though anon, a lot of the cheaper skirts are costume/cosplay tier and not what I would call "nice" by any honest standard. Even the solid color skirts at BL look questionable just from the photos. They look like they might be see-through or generally cheap-looking IRL and when you go out in public that's going to say "I'm wearing a costume" rather than "this is my personal style". You say "a nice skirt that has the same look" but to the critical eye it's not the same look, just an approximation of a look.

Also I have to point out with the cardigans: Japanese school cardigans are a very specific shape and style. I have tried to find similar ones in US stores and it's just impossible. I purchased a couple of the most basic cardigans I could find from Kohl's and they were still all wrong, the material was too thin, the arms were super skinny and the cardigans were shapeless and clung to me making the outfit look worse, not better. The school cardigans are a classic shape and US retailers are going off the deep end trying to imitate the runway, so they barely sell any classic pieces anymore.

I'm like you, I don't want to shell out $50 at Conomi for one sweater but at the same time, you can't half-ass your outfit or it defeats the whole point, which is to look nice (I assume).

Perhaps it would be worthwhile to develop a collaborative price tier guide comparing Conomi pieces to decent cheaper alternatives. I just received a $12 cardigan from a Chinese ebay seller and while it's not as nice as something at Conomi, it's still way better looking than anything I've been able to find at a US store for even three times that price.

I want a navy blue duffle/duffel/toggle coat for the winter, but the brands like Conomi, Olive des Olive, Candy Sugar and such are like $150-250.

I have thought about grabbing a used one from Yahoo Japan but kinda nervous... Never used proxy service before. Still thinking about it.

I've been looking for American/British alternatives in the meantime but can't seem to find anything that's not in bad shape or just doesn't look like how I think it should. Scared to drop a bunch of money on a random brand coat and have it look off.

Japanese teacher anon, is the silhouette of these for uniforms IRL usually a straight cut or a-line? The nanchatte brands look a-line, most western cuts seem to be straight up and down, I'll shell out the extra money for a-line if it's authentic but can't tell if I'm just imagining things.

Yep, I think the price of cardigans just went up. I'd ordered a ~$12/free ship one from an Ebay seller, after I got it I liked it so I went back to get another color and they'd tacked another 8 bucks onto it for shipping. Dug through Ali and found the same one for 15 or so/free ship, grabbed the color I wanted. Now that I go back to look I can't find that listing and they're all like twice what I paid for the first one.

Hopefully it's just a seasonal thing and they'll drop in the summer again when it's hot and there's not as much interest.

>Why do you wear nanchatte? Did you wear a uniform before or just because you like the aesthetic of uniforms?
I love the look specifically kneesocks and pleated skirts. But I did wear a uniform (catholic hs) and it sucked dicks so I'm reclaiming the cute feeling.

>What's your favorite way to wear nanchatte? Authentic? Sporty? Fun and fashionable?
Just really simple. I want to get more creative, just waiting till I can afford to splurge on a haul of some cute/unusual pieces. Sometimes I throw in a hoodie or something and make it more sporty, but I really want to get myself into the fun/fashionable side more.

>Where do you like to buy your pieces? Favorite brand? Do you ever thrift for basics?
I have a handful of bodyline skirts that are pretty decent (Avoid the really short costume sets, they're bad. And buy on sale). I thrift for basics a lot, though lately seems like it's impossible to find a goddamn dress shirt that's plain white and fits me.
I also wear lolita, so for me it's actually such a nice breather not to have to care about brands or quality (as much). You can get away with cheapish pieces so much more easily without looking like a hot fucking mess. I love the look of Conomi pieces etc. but there's not as much pressure to buy expensive stuff and that's great.
I would say seifuku might be an exception to this though, since some cosplay pieces look so bad.

>>
>>9217685
Dude, you're right. I looked through the latest batch of pics here last night and all the shirts are a lot less fitted. Mine feels like sits on me with the darts and seams in the right places but that's because it's a normie shirt I thrifted (originally from smart set...so office wear?).

There's a consignment store that opened up near me recently so I'll try and see if they're selling used uniform shirts, assuming they don't have school logos or anything.
>>

>>
>>9218838
If by mocha you mean the lowest leftmost one, then I think both colors are nice depending on your coords... though I question both those unnecessary pocket buttons (unsightly and who uses pocket buttons anyway?) and the fact that the material is fleece rather than a wool blend (translation: the coat will look more like a jacket, rumply and won't keep its shape).

If I were you I would spend a little more on something like this which is still relatively cheap but is at least a wool blend. Ali link but I think I saw this one on ebay too.

I actually have this saved as well! I guess when I looked at it last night I just looked at the photos and figured it was the same thing as the ebay listing minus the pocket buttons (which are pretty weird) since it came in the same colors. I didn't notice the difference in fabrics.

My coords will mostly be blues/greys/blacks/reds and one lone pink because it's too cute to pass up. I'm trying to go more for common nanchatte colors than the fashion ones.

Again, not that guy (straight femanon who gets excited by certain types of clothing on men). I wasn't trying to completely excuse the guy but turn it around - if this was a thread of men discussing fashion choices and a femanon came by to say "YESSSS, button up shirts make me so wet!" I think the same reaction from them would be kinda harsh.

Sure, his post was obnoxious, and anyone who says stuff like that IRL is sketchy, but it's an anonymous board, and it at least seemed positive, not trolling.

Then again, 4 years ago I would probably have been offended too. The internet has corrupted me...

Depends on what color your sneakers are, also the type of outfit you wear. I think they look fine with more laid back uniform like seifuku or a short-sleeved summer collab.

Pic related, sneakers would look fine with any of those outfits.
>>
>>9219279
Short sleeved is what I'd be wearing most often but with a cardigan over it because of the cold weather. For colors I was thinking just plain black or white to match anything.

So far the most I've seen is converse sneakers and athletic sneakers.

Snagged a cute duffle coat on Yahoo JP Auctions this morning along with two skirts (so far). The coat is a little trendier than the traditional duffle style I was trying for, but I think it will look better with my height anyway (and it was sooo cheap that I can afford to get a more traditional one later). I'm going to do a cost breakdown after all the shipping fees are made clear, but I already have a feeling this is the best place to buy good quality pieces for nanchatte on a budget.

I'm reading some of the responses in this thread, and I seriously have to ask.... Do you have to wear blouses?

I want to make an outfit based off of my old school uniform with a little cute j-fashion twist (cardigan, loafers, and a different type of tie), but usually we would wear collared shirts and not blouses because you can notice sweat more easier with blouses. (I lived in the tropics).
>>
>>9243212
>collared shirt
Actually.. that looks pretty much the same thing? I think a lot of us are saying blouses because that's just the term that's common where we're from for a women's collared shirt despite blouses coming in a ton of different fabrics like chiffon which is not nanchatte.

You do you, anon! No sense in sweating through your clothes just to be 100% accurate. Hell, I'm wearing hoodies and sneakers with my nanchatte most days because of campus walking and it being almost winter.

First time posting. Was kinda going for a casual nanchatte inspired thing. Thoughts? Feel free to bully me into oblivion.
>>
>>9244257
The shirt and skirt aren't bad for this (is that American Apparel? how short are those?) and I like the cardigan on its own but the pattern looks kind of washed out compared to the dark skirt.

If I block out the cardigan the socks look fine with the shirt and skirt, but your shoes should tie in with the skirt color-wise because right now it's a big dark block and the outfit looks unbalanced.
>>
>>9243212
You could wear a polo shirt if that's what you mean?

To be clear, blouses are tailored, and made out of a woven fabric (cotton) in this case. Dress shirts for men are the same thing but obviously not tailored to a female figure, and I do believe the two are supposed to button on opposite sides traditionally.
A polo shirt is made out of stretchier fabric and therefore won't be tailored but the collar looks nice enough IMO. My uniform in high school had it as an option, anyway.

I think you are being over-dramatic. If you take off the cardigan and shoes, and ignore the texture of the socks, anon has the basic idea. She could just buy a more on-point cardigan and some black loafers and the outfit would be vastly improved.
>>
>>9244661
Don't take it to heart anon.

Try one of these, they have a khaki colored one which is the base color of your sweater.

I think you're on the way but as another casual nanchatte, here's my opinion.

1. Get an undershirt. I can see your bra through it, it's pretty noticible.
2. The cardigan doesn't match.
3. The skirt and socks/shoes don't match.

Basically, what you have is TWO nanchatte outfits, not one. From this you can do two things:

1. shirt + skirt (if it's black) + socks + charcoal cardigan to match socks + black shoes
2. shirt + charcoal+black plaid skirt + socks + black shoes + complimenting cardigan

The shoes just aren't complimenting anything.

>Why do you wear nanchatte? Did you wear a uniform before or just because you like the aesthetic of uniforms?
Had to wear a low-key western uniform in JH and HS which was basically navy or khaki pants with any color polo. I wear nanchatte because I've always liked professional-esque like clothing and nanchatte is the perfect blend of being girly but still business-like.
>What's your favorite way to wear nanchatte?
The general cardigan modern type (though I won't wear the cardigan on hot days)
>Where do you like to buy your pieces? Favorite brand? Do you ever thrift for basics?
I just happened to buy pieces from separate places that could be passed off as nanchatte. Otherwise I'll do a google shopping search for whatever special item I need (like school loafers or a specific pattern skirt I want)
>>

Not gonna even lie, I'd be somewhere between the two of them. I'd at least wear thick tights but otherwise I'm fashionable rather than practical.
>>
>>9249040
I'm somewhere in-between as well, though I think I lean on the practical side, lol.

It really depends on how cold it gets. If it's hovering around zero, I can manage with mostly warm but cute boots, and maybe I skip fleece tights for regular ones.

But if it's -15 C, I have to drag out the heavy snow boots, puffy skiing coat, scarf, hat, etc. etc. Looks dorky but I need to be able to survive the wait for my bus.

I also got a 6th item, a book, and combined that with this lot to get the EMS discount. So the average international shipping cost was 1140 yen per item. (There was a considerably cheaper shipping option available, but it was estimated to take 60-90 days in some cases and I wanted my coat for winter. So I willingly paid about $20 more to get everything faster.)

Final verdict: Yahoo Auctions is a gold mine for nanchatte with a lot of pieces starting at around the equivalent of US$10-$15 and there is minimal bidding competition since used uniforms are ubiquitous in Japan. The cost is a little more than something like Bodyline, but it is a huge step up in terms of quality and authenticity.

TL;DR if you want cute subdued pieces and don't want to pay Conomi prices, go on YA immediately!

Was just at Target tonight, they have nanchatte-spec wool-blend cardigans in the men's section for $29.99. Navy blue, gray, and charcoal gray. The navy color is more muted in person. They are quite thin, so would be good for layering under a blazer. It looks like they will be 30% off on Black Friday.

Looks good anon! The only real nitpick I have (besides skirt type) is the shoes.

Latest haul, anxiously awaiting shipment.

I actually just returned from Japan after spending a shitload at Conomi and Eastboy, so this made me a bit guilty lmao

Thanks anon! I might go buy one!

Thank you! Yeah, I have more appropriate black oxfords but they have a heel and aren't good for walking about campus. As far as the skirt, would you say its silhouette could be better? I've been meaning to get some nice pleated ones, but I'm unsure if they'll look good on me since I have a bit of a gut.
>>
>>9251604
Yeah, I would say what you have right now is more j-fashion than nanchatte. The color and pattern of the skirt is really cute, but it needs pleats to look like a uniform. If you feel like your stomach sticks out noticeably just get an oversized cardigan, schoolgirls in Japan use them to hide the thick rolled up skirts around their waists and you can't tell the difference. You look fine in this picture though so I doubt it's necessary.

Everything looks lovely! I love subdued colour schemes in nanchatte, it feels classy.

Found some casual nanchatte tops at Walmart. They had them in a bunch of different colors and styles so I ended up grabbing these two to try out after I get my skirts.
>>
Probably a long shot, but does anyone know a Taobao seller that has this color+pattern skirt in stock?
It's originally from here:
https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z10.3-c.w4002-14662538112.66.pyaFE2&id=526425581095
but apparently it's sold out until next month...

Where can you buy school scarves with a tartan pattern.? I know Conomi does them but it's on the higher end in pricing especially for one scarf.

>>9249805
Bidding on two skirts right now. My nanchatte game got more legit. Thanks anon.
>>
>>9256777
I found some on eBay actually. Taobao has them as well if you search for "plaid scarf"
>>
>>9254998
Oh, thanks! I was actually eyeing this one too but I had some reservations due to the quality of the material you could fit into a skirt for roughly $10 at base price.

I ended up going with this one: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=526878119302
which albeit isn't that much more, but I was having trouble finding anything else and I'm not about to drop $100 on the one from Conomi >_>

>How about some questions for more discussion ?
- What defines/ describes proper nanchatte looks in your opinion? or What are any rules of nanchatte you follow? (eg: not wearing loafers= not nanchatte, pleated skirts = necessary, etc)
- Do you have any friends who go around in nanchatte together?
- Where do you look for nanchatte inspiration?
- Would you be up for joining a Nanchatte local or online comm?
- Favorite shops for nanchatte style clothes/accessories/shoes/bags?
- Is there/ should there be an age limit on when one should not wear nanchatte anymore?
- How do you feel about men in nanchatte?

I'll try but I'm a bit of a con nanchatte and super casual everyday.

1. Proper nanchatte to me is basically what you'd expect. Collared shirts, bows/ties, plaid skirts, knee socks and loafers. I'm pretty lax with the rules myself but I do stick to plaid skirts, tights, and a collared shirt with bow/tie. I swap out loafers for sneakers though for practicality but at cons I'll wear loafers.

2. None of my friends do nanchatte, sadly.

3. Usually here or through Google. Animes/mangas as well sometimes.

4. I'd love to join a comm! I've been wanting to try out starting a nanchatte meet at a local con just to meet others.

5. Taobao is my main to-go place for nanchatte. I love it but not enough to pay Conomi/other burando prices.
>Favorite Taobao shop for bags: https://shop33588951.world.taobao.com/

6. There shouldn't be an age limit on nanchatte. After all, the whole point of it is to be a fake student and relive your youth.

7. Fine? I mean they have male nanchatte in Japan already that wear their old highschool uniforms and go to nanchatte comms.

>What defines/ describes proper nanchatte looks in your opinion?
Follows the same logic as in Japanese schools, with slightly more leeway for fun. Uniforms are regulated by a dress code. Students bend the rules all the time, but only in certain ways. You have to have a pleated skirt, for example, but you can shorten it. Only certain colors of sock are canon - but you can wear them loose or zettai ryouiki. There are certain styles of bags, but you can put whatever charm you like on them. Like the language itself, there are levels of formality. Loafers = highest formality, sneakers = casual. Collar buttoned with bow = highest formality, unbuttoned collar = casual. But you have to keep certain basic principles or it becomes j-fashion.

>Do you have any friends who go around in nanchatte together?
I wish.

>Where do you look for nanchatte inspiration?
This thread, various tumblr collections people have put together, image search, anime.

>Would you be up for joining a Nanchatte local or online comm?
Not sure, I like relative anonymity. Nanchatte isn't so much a fun escape/social thing for me as it is the perfect solution to my lifelong problem of being badly dressed.

>Favorite shops for nanchatte style clothes/accessories/shoes/bags?
I'm Yahoo Auctions haul anon, so YA is my favorite. Conomi for everything I want brand new/can't get cheaper on YA. Ebay/Ali for bows because the Conomi prices are absurd.

>Is there/ should there be an age limit on when one should not wear nanchatte anymore?
I think it's more about the style fitting your personality and being appropriate to your body. There's probably a point when long skirts are more flattering than mini length.

>How do you feel about men in nanchatte?
If you're referring to the standard loose white shirt tucked into black pants, I feel like I need to take a cold shower.
>>
H&M Has some nice blouses and cardigans. They do have blazers but, they look more business casual than school uniform looking.
Their website is having free shipping right now, I just picked up some pastel blue and a white collared shirt for $10 bucks each in store myself.

I think the basic "rules" would be: always pleated skirts *solid or plaid
always wearing tights or socks between ankle- overknee length,
Always a top with a collar, in colors that are light and no patterns,
Ties are optional but all styles work,
Blazers should have a nice tailored fit to them and not look too pantsuit ish.
Seifuku nanchatte should not look cheap, but is an easy pre designed coordinate way to do nanchatte.

I may be missing a few points but this is what I think the main "rules" are, if only to catagorize what is nanchatte and what is school/ preppy inspired

that's cute as fuck, while also being sensible
I can't bring myself to wear shorter skirts (mid thigh) in the winter because it would look silly as fuck in my country
I guess japan is used to schoolgirls running around bare-legged in the snow

In all honesty, if you walk a lot... the legs stay pretty warm.

I wear socks and skirts in the winter with a longer jacket.
