Cons in less then a month, anyone else going?
Does anyone think this con will ever get out of it's 2007-2009 anime con phase?
>>9177890
>In less than a month
It's on the 28th of October. That is more than a month from now friend.
And to anser your question probably not. I mean we'll see, I've written off the con for years, but I'm hoping the move to the convention center will be a good one.
>>9177890
Con is in like 7 weeks anon haha
>haven't even started putting my new cosplay together
I might just rewear ones I debuted earlier this year. I'm excited to see the new location though!
It's about time that the venue moved to the convention center, and I have some pretty high hopes for this year. It'll be interesting to see what, if anything, changes about the atmosphere and demographic.
I'm also praying that the move has killed the glomp circle.
>>9177890
Nah, I ain't gay
>>9178170
CAAAAAAAAAAARL
I'm looking forward to it. Definitely trying to plan cosplays around colder weather though.
>>9178285
Same, I'm dreading those 16 degree weather nights
You gave me a fright there for a second OP. There is definitely more than a month left, which is good since I still need to do some work on my cosplay...
Thoughts on the hotels/motels within walking distance of the OCC?
I've stayed in exactly none of them and I want some blunt gull opinions.
>>9177890
I'm going, but I also live really close. I'm going to go and take photos and do private shoots, primarily.
I think it could potentially surpass it's anime con phase now that it has moved it's date. Before it was only the anime fans would attend, since there were competing cons that would pull the more pop culture aspect. We'll see!
>>9185919
There are a lot of options. The MAX line goes RIGHT in front of the convention center, so stay close to one of those.
Within walking distance from the convention center are a lot of restaurants, bars, and markets. Plus you are fairly close to the Lloyd Center Mall. It's got a decent food court and is usually really chill, but they are working on it now so it's kinda ugly inside.
Uber is also easy here, so worst case you can uber pretty easily and cheap from wherever.
Pretty hyped since I live downtown anyways and can just take the MAX. Debating just going on the train in cosplay or packing it and changing at the con, cosplaying on the train seems super fucking embarrassing
It's kinda cool that we'll be back near the mall again too.
>>9186101
No one here gives a shit when cons are happening and people are dressed up in cosplay. There is nothing embarrassing about it. Most people are just like "oh, you're going to a con!"
I wear lolita all the time around town and I have zero issues on the max.
>>9185919
In high school I was on a team that always had competitions at the convention center so I ended up staying at like 5 hotels near there. The Red Lion and all the hotels on the same block (idr the exact names) are all fine and didn't have any major notable issues. I wouldn't say any of them were super nice, but it's sort of what you'd expect for a cheapish hotel.
But yeah, otherwise, the MAX is definitely a good option to keep in mind for transportation.
>>9186500
I was at Rose City Comicon and I spoke to a noticiably excited and curious young woman. Through talking to her she told me that she just moved to Portland and was near the convention center and saw cosplayers and had no clue what was happening. She ended up following the path of people that led to the convention, where she apparently purchased a badge, was taking photos, and bought some things.
In Portland, you could dress in cosplay and walk around in general and nobody would give a shit. They may be curious and ask "why?" - but other than that, people don't care.
Weirder the better, really.
>>9185969
I'm glad for the date change. Before it was always on the same weekend as PAX, which tends to be a lot more interesting
>>9186570
Haha, yup. Portland is truly easy going about nerd culture. I did have one awkward experience in an uber, but that was the only time and that guy didn't even speak english.
>>9186570
So basically "Oh you're doing something weird? Let me follow you and take pictures!" mentality?
>>9186500
Do we live in the same city? In cosplay and jfash I get bothered nonstop; by crazy people yelling at me, tourists following me taking pics, getting stopped every block asking me what's going on. Maybe not in pioneer square but like any other part of Portland is a huge hassle, especially since the city has gotten bigger and more popular.
>>9186660
Oh yeah. When I leave my neighborhood it's a bitch. But as soon as I get on the bus people stop giving a fuck. Or they think I'm cute.
It would be so funny if you're the girl in my neighborhood that wears fariy kei... I've seen her a few times now...
>>9186570
Also I met lots of adorable people last saturday! I still need to go through all my pictures.
>>9186636
When I went to a mini con as I was walking around downtown after a guy took a picture of me. There's a ton of "photographers" downtown that just take pictures of everyone though. I've had my picture taken in a fucking work uniform. Always guys too. I think some PSU brodude/chad types take up that hobby to "befriend" women here.
>>9186570
I was gonna say, Portland's motto is "keep it weird" and shit like this happens
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnVjkE87FDY
and most of the population is hipsters, I'm pretty sure they're cool with nerd shit
>>9186660
I'm not saying you'll be ignored, but more than likely it will be embraced than shunned.
>>9186674
I photograph interesting looking people downtown all the time. I approach them and ask for a photo, and they nearly always say yes, even if they don't understand why.
>>9186680
It's "Keep Portland Weird", just to clarify lol
And yeh, that's the unipiper. He's always around in costume doing shit.
Also, I would say I'm not a hipster, but then again if you say you aren't a hipster I think that's the first step in being a hipster. I am definitely enveloped in geek/nerd culture though

Want a random asshole to film you and put it up online? Portland's your dream city! Also if you like getting asked what you're doing while eating dinner in a restaurant, go to Portland.
>>9186742
it's like everyone is famous here.
>>9186751
Wait.. are you saying they are not?
I've seen "the Flash" on Netflix. I know Portland is Central City.
>>9186777
They're not what?
I was saying they're famous what.
>>9186782
Jokes are hard.
I really hope the glomp circles stop being a thing, it took Sakura con so long to stop that
>>9187069
Be nice. That's the only human contact those kids have all year. I think if they have it this year it will be across the street in that little park.
>>9187205
I can't tell if that's serious or not but it sounds sad either way
>>9186827
I thought you were trying to read my post in a sarcastic tone. I wasn't being sarcastic.
Man, I love this con but I haven't been able to go for a couple years. I've always thought it was a great size in that it still felt really community based, and the fan panels are often really good. I hope the move to the convention center doesn't kill that vibe.
First time going to Kumoricon, any advice?
I got a room at Portland Pensions but I've never heard of it before and it has some bad reviews? It basically was decided upon because it's cheap, nearby, and parking. Coming from across the river so figured that it be worth it in sheer not having to fight Portland traffic.
>>9187315
I'm not really sure what to expect since it's changed venues and is back to 3 days. I'm excited for it though.
Any advice for a Californian coming up?
>>9188450
It's going to be fucking cold and/or fucking wet.
Is the nearby Motel 6 any good?
I don't need to hear that it's amazing. Just need to know that I won't get ass cancer if I stay there.
>>9188450
Don't move here.
>>9189616
It's motel 6 man, just stay at one of the other motels
>>9189672
I'm not moving there you chimp, coming for the con
>>9188450
Don't mention California to portlanders -- it triggers them.
>>9190774
Figured
Anyone applying to model?
What's everyone planning to cosplay?
I'm cosplaying from Touken Ranbu and Owari no Sereph.
>>9193782
I'm going to be doing Tsumiki from Dangan Ronpa 2
>>9187069
Staff want glomp circle to end.
>>9193782
I'll be doing JoJo, Persona and Fire Emblem
>>9193177
to model? what do you mean?
>>9194187
Assuming they meant for the galaxxxy fashion show?
They finally got worthwhile guests, anyone doing any Gainax/Trigger cosplays?
>>9194200
>galaxxxy fashion show
I looked on the site and I see the application, but is there any other info for this event? I don't care about modeling, but I'd like to see it?
This might actually get me to go this year.
>>9198296
Fuck me Gainax will be there???
>>9198357
Two members of studio Trigger, one of them was a former member of Gainax
>>9193928
Do you want it to end?
NOW, we're officially one month away
Anyone done with their costumes? Anyone worried about finishing? Mine are started but not as far along as I'd like.
>>9206621
How far are you?
First time attending, I usually stick to SakuraCon.
When does the schedule usually pop up online?
when's the touhou panel?
>>9210845
Usually a week or two before con.
Just need shoes for my cosplay, I have a package coming, hope it gets here in time!
Less than 3 weeks to go!
Compare to sakura con which is better?
>>9217884
Up until now Sakura-con without a doubt, but it might change now with the new location
>>9217884
Sak, not sure, the new location could pull it through to #1
hey if anyone has/is looking to split a room near the con drop me an email
Now that Kumo is getting a little bigger, I hope they'll be able to get better guests, especially in the musical department. Just got around to listening to this year's musical guest and I honestly have no idea what she's supposed to have to do with japan or anime...
>>9217884
Sakuracon for sure. Kumoricon might be able to be a contender in a few years, although I don't think there's quite as many hotels in the area even with the new location so it will probably always be smaller - not that being big necessarily entails a better con, but it does offer a lot of benefits
Anyone looking for a new friend to hangout with? I was supposed to be bumming around with 2 of my friends for Friday and Saturday now one friend is bailing and the other one doesn't even want to show up at all on Friday. Is there gonna be a /cgl/ meetup?
>>9220916
They haven't announced a music guest yet though, just the "rave" line up.
>>9221167
I'm down for a /cgl/ meetup, what day should we have it on? or should we have two?
>>9221229
It's that stupid Kieran Strange person
Less than 2 weeks to go!
>>9222312
No wonder I couldn't find it. I guess we can't expect them to make improvements every area so quickly. Maybe next year we'll get a real music guest.
Okay /cgl/ meetup on Friday, Saturday or both?
>>9222725
Sat cause that's the most popular day
>>9224322
Alright Saturday it is!
What time and place should the meet be at?
>>9224360
I think once the schedule and map is out it'd be easier to say when and where.
>>9225024
Sounds good!
Schedule is live!
https://www.kumoricon.org/events
>>9228774
Any seagulls hosting panels? I'm really not sure which ones I want to attend.
>>9228774
Alright, now let's plan what location and time the meetup should be
The guy hosting the how to Let's Play panel has under 300 followers and most of his videos have under 50 views. Do they even check if panelists are qualified or can any asshole run any panel?
>>9229547
I know a couple of people who run a panel. While they are very nice, I don't think they are at all qualified. So probably the second one.
>>9229550
What panel(s)?
>>9229547
Fan panels are always filler, I mean there's a lovelive and touhou panel ffs
>>9229557
To be vague, it's a panel (or two?) that involve improv. I know that they've done it for more than three years.
>>9229622
Oh yeah, that group... I've been to their panels and their improv is occasionally funny but mostly cringey.
>still no guidebook app
I know this is a smaller con but c'mon, get it together
>>9229591
Yeah but "how to be a let's player" isn't a fan panel, it's a guide panel being taught by a guy with no youtube following. What's he going to teach me to do, make clickbait preview pics for videos?
>>9231723
It's one thing to know how to set up and run a YouTube / Twitch channel like he does.
It's another to have the right personality to attract more followers, though.
He's got some of the basics down, so kinda curious to see how it actually goes.
I'll probably attend if I have free time, given he's still a friend of mine.
>>9231620
Yes there is...
>>9229547
I know this guy personally and he's a asshole who does everything to get laid. He doesn't even know how to take a screen shot on his computer. Don't waste your time.
>>9231842
Ah yes, his Patreon. For his fans clamoring to pay him.
Okay, official gathering at the pendulum, Saturday at 8:30 pm, sound good?
>>9231620
>>9232216
Yeah, "soon" with 4 days left.
>>9231807
Where?
Check it now :)
Going cause my mates needed a fourth for their hotel and I want to see if the new location changes things at all.
Got Tony from Hotline Miami 2 ready, and the mask doubles as an excuse to not show my face.
Met a pair at Rose City last year who were doing the Swans, they told me I was the first person who recognized them, and I can't imagine Kumori or my choice of character is improving my odds. Pretty sure most people are just going to think I'm a furry, but fuck em.
>>9229591
Touhou panel was so trash when I went year before last.
>>9234394
Hotline Miami is still recent enough some people will probably recognize it.
It's one of those costumes that suddenly everyone would recognize if you were standing with the main 1 or 2 characters, but not quite as much on their own.
Where is saturday meetup and what time?
Looks like it's gonna be a wet weekend! Friday looks decent thankfully
what is everyone going as
>>9236230
Goku
>have to work tomorrow and saturday evening
>last year my work may be around so I cant really take the days off either
>augh
going to be a super casual con for me with no new cosplays. Simply havent had time this month. Hopefully should get to relax a bit at con though, and wont have to take off till about 5 pm anyways.
I really like the new location, I've never been to this convention center before. Gonna miss the park a little bit though
Day 0, anyone here yet?

>>9236793
Judging by the pictures on facebook, no.
It's day 0 tho, so the deluge will begin tomorrow.
At least 3 confirmed shootings and 4 shots total tonight that started in the park by Lloyd Center. Please be careful gulls.

touhou panel was actually pretty okay.
I was surprised, every panelist was highly intoxicated. pretty sure it was the same people that do it at Sakura con
The Dangan Ronpa panel on Saturday was a mess... Occasionally I'm reminded of just how easy it is to get approved for a panel
Saw a super cute Ashida I would've asked out for coffee if I wasn't such a loser

>>9240138
What the shit 4chan get your shit together with this image rotation.
>>9240114
Definitely not just you. The season-change was a deathblow, just could not get on-board with anything the con was doing. Maybe I'm outgrowing the con (or it outgrew me), but it felt like the charm and spirit of the con was absent this year. Just felt very dead and vacant.
>>9240591
I thought the opposite. It was so busy and there was so much to do this year. Last year I got bored and left early, and in previous years there was always a problem with not enough content. I do think the labor day timing was better than Halloween but it was still fun.
>>9239394
