Because shiro and kuro are more than just colors or atleast used to be. Just a basic black gothic coord isn't kuro imo. Back in the day there were less color vaeuotaions and styles so makes sense they made those terms. Bittersweet however is just literally a sweet print dress in black colorway. Nothing more. There's a reason the terms for others one colored coords have died out: they are pretty much useless and descripes nothing in those coordinates. It's like we suddenly decided to call pink colored sweet cottoncandysweet and sax skycolorsweet etc.

I think what used to draw me in to AP prints were the little "worlds" in their prints. There was a story. Even basic stuff--these desserts are on a table, they're meant to be served. Items together meant something. This dress is just stuff floating. Chocolate desserts floating. There's no story, they're just there. They drew some cute stuff and threw it on the dress with no rhyme or reason.

I also think that the trim has a more golden tone tone on mine, the new one looks more silver. A far as I' concerned bittersweet is a mixture of gothic and sweet colours and motifs, like a Lolita version of pastel goth/creepycute stuff. Again, I'm not saying it's not sweet. It's sweet as fuck, but it lends itself to being styled in a more gothic way. The point is that I'm not saying it's totally a gawfick dress, or any random strawberry print sweet dress that happens to be black, it's a dress that gives off both gothic and sweet vibes and I wish this was a properly done substyle. I'm sure the hardcore gothic lolitas would rather bittersweet was its own thing rather than seeing cutesy Hello Batty style coords shitting up their Gothic tags instead of pure Moitie.

What really doesn't help is how much gothic has changed. It exists on its own separate plane nowadays when I remember plenty of shiro/kuro coords that could be ambiguously seen as gothic or sweet, even with all the details and bows pointing to sweet. Having said that though, new school gothic that doesn't look like aristo seems largely defined by its print themes rather than construction. Then again most new school seems to lack detail and trim in lieu of print focus.

Honestly I don't think it's gothic, it can be coorded with gothic pieces along side it sure but I look at HL and see what sweet lolitas wear on Halloween. The piece itself doesn't have anything really "gothic" in the sense of gothic Lolita so much as it does a Halloween costume.

As much rage as people might have over it, I'd honestly call things like HL or Horror Garden "spooky sweet". They're definitely sweet but kinda have a "spooky" edge to them that gets confused for gothic. Not that it's a legitimate substyle, but that's just how I think of them. If you're really curious about the origin of the hatred for bittersweet:

Years ago some Western lolita made up this name. I kid you not. The term was not in use before this.

A lolita made this wordy post on livejournal proposing that we create a new substyle called bittersweet, that was basically sweet prints in black colourway, because black is dark or gothic or something. Keep in mind this was way, way before Holy Lantern, way before tumblr and spoopy or spooky-cute, probably before creepy cute. I remember she posted example pics with her post, basically sweet prints in black colourway. No batwings, no eyeballs.

Some lolitas took to the idea (which is why daily_lolita has a tag for bittersweet), but others flipped their shit, because when you boil it down this does look like some special snowflake wants to "create" a new substyle by renaming a colourway of sweet lolita, at the same time trying to say she's different from all the other sweet lolitas so she gets her own special label. Remember, this being before creepy cute, etc. There was nothing more to bittersweet than just sweet print on black background.

Next it gets discussed on cgl, where the haters came out and bash the thing even further to death every time it's mentioned. With cgl being all anon, I guess every anon who likes bittersweet either gets mistaken for the original girl who posted the original suggestion, or just gets shat on anyway because they really disliked the idea. Though by now I'm no longer sure if the ones shitting on bittersweet are still the original oldfags who hated the idea originally, trolling, or memeing.

And now you know the history.

Honestly though every name for sweet-gothic seems problematic, I don't know if we'll ever find a good name.

I hated the previews for this dress but I actually dont hate it? Its not something I'm going to buy but it isnt as bad as I thought. The ivory is probably my favorite since I dont really dig jewel tones in lolita. Reminds me of older chocolate prints like Chess Chocolate and Melty Chocolate.

Well, by my standards it is worth the price. Though there have been several discussion how old JM was better quality than the newer releases. I own couple JSKs, I find the quality of everything (sewing, fabric, details, durability) satisfying. I like the wearability of JM.

... but I've always bought second hand JM. I've never had to deal with direct ordering. I just love that dress already a bit too much.

It's really a hit or miss for me. It's always somehwat depending on the season, what fabric they used and if the piece has lining or not. Sometimes the quality of sewing is a bit questionable (where you to resew buttons and hems after a while, but that seems to be a general issue with brands I guess), so in the end it depends on how much you are willing to spend.

Just a small general tip: avoid the cutsew dresses. They will only last you for a couple of seasons until the fabric gets thin and worn out and the seams don't hold up as well as on other fabrics.
