10 days and counting! Guidebook goes live soon too. Or may have already gone live, not on top of it.
Anyone else balls to the wall on procrastinated costumes?
>>
This is probably the first time in a long time that I finished everything well in advance, even after remaking things
I'm quite proud.
>>
Looking for a hotel space for two people. More than happy with floor space!
>>
>>9157194
same, good job.
>>
>>9157191
I'm screwed. I had a few minor family disasters that cut into my sewing time and I don't know if I can finish now.
How pissy are people at this con if you wear a partially/mostly finished costume?
>>
>>9157445
Not pissy at all if you're not competing with it. It's not like they're going to tell you to your face regardless.

But don't worry friend, I too am screwed. Let me impart a words of newly learned wisdom to my fellow seagulls:
Never try to use a stretch to do a woven's job. Holy fuck the puckering. I am going to die. And I'm never going to finish this piece of shit costume.

I'm sorry to hear you're fucked too but also kinda glad I'm not the only one; I hope it works out for you and you can get it in line.

This is my first time going to San Japan, how is the artist alley, is there a good variety of things or is it mostly art prints and buttons and stuff like at smaller cons?
>>
It's extremely last minute because I didn't expect to be picked to model and the drive will probably end me, but still pretty excited for my first San Japan and trip to San Antonio. Hoping to use Friday to explore the AA and vendors a little since Saturday I'm basically a prisoner. Are they usually any good?
>>
>>9157606
its ok. theres a ton of the prints and buttons stuff but theres a good amount of other handmade things to buy, dealers room is massive tho.
>>
add me at Cascalynd on Line for an invite to the SJ line chat. filtering people so we dont get those group raiders who kick everyone out.

When's Third Strike?
>>
>>9157191
Did they rip off Gundam F91 or what?
>>
I can't wait, I haven't been to any con in years. I'm also trying to break into cosplaying this year, so long as I can actually finish my pieces in time.
>>
>>9157857
That's the real trick, innit? Actually finishing the pieces.
But good for you anon. Ganbatte! Maybe if we all believe in one another, all of us poor last minute costumers will end up making it.
Anyone competing? (I'm not but I'm always curious)
>>
>>9157853
Sort of? The theme this year is robots and androids.
>>
One week away! Who is ready? Anyone excited for lolita programming?
>>
>>9159304
Im not done with my cosplay yet, I feel like I need another week.
And I hope the artist alley has different stuff this year. It seems like weve had the exact same stuff at all the cons for a year or two now.
>>
>>9158822
>>9157853

It looks more like a crossbone gundam with the emblem shopped out of the chest.

Anyone know any good cheap ways to do a Deckard cosplay?
>>
>>9160408
Since you obviously don't care about accuracy if you want to do it cheap this short notice to the con:
>go to Buffalo Exchange
>buy a hipstery plaid tie and a hipstery shirt. And a trench coat

The SJ Maid Cafe has to be the cringiest looking maid cafe ever. Unstyled wigs, fatty chans, unfortunate faces, and questionable maids/butlers that look in their 30s? It looks like a disaster.

>>9164293
In my experience, every anime convention maid cafe looks like that.

Can we turn this thread into cringiest/weeaboo of san Japan thread? Post pic's maybe even a short story of your find? ( I'm sure San Antonio is filled with them)

Story time. I went to my first maid cafe ever last year. It was about as weird as I expected. There were a couple of dudebros at my table but they were actually pretty friendly.

So a couple of the maids and waiter(?) did a musical number, and the girl singing was super nervous, like straight up started crying in the middle of the song. Probably the worst I've ever felt for someone in my life.

The tea was alright.
>>
>>9164293
>>9164314
Also not that anon. Have you seen the maid cafe? They're pretty gross.

SJ has one of the worst maid cafes out of any convention I've personally gone too. They all look terrible, but don't care because their tickets will still sell out because weebs.

I had an idea for a cosplay for SJ that I ended up deciding against. I was going to dress as the grim reaper and be Death from pic related. The idea was that I would walk around looking for people dressed as characters that canonically died in their universes, and then berate them to get in my bag.

Posting here in case anyone wants to steal.

Damn, Texas seagulls are quiet this year. I remember when the Texas scene was drama central, did someone put happy pills in your water?
>>
>>9167666
No, we're just really exhausted by ourselves and we don't have any fresh lolcows on the scene this year.
Also nice trips
>>
>>9167666
It helps that San Japan had always been low drama con. And when it wasn't, they fired the cosplay directors that were drama and hired someone who is so completely non-drama that she's a non-entity entirely.

So hows everyone doing with their last minute cosplays? Get everything finished?

I know it's so lovely over there, I've always liked that city and it's been years since I've visited. Surprised I never just drove over there to spend the day.

>>9169004
It's more pondering over how so much happened in so little time than moping. I'd have to make sure that I'm not needed for anything here before I left, since we're trying to get a particular issue over and done with asap.

I am bummed about the fact that I'm missing the start of the Overwatch season however.

How was the cosplay contest? Who won?
>>
>>9171487
Only one I know of is Tall Princess won Best in Show for her Outlander cosplay. Well deserved. I follow her on instagram and that thing was a hella lot of work.
>>
>you can wear a maid outfit with a blue or pink wig and win best in class
San Japan cosplay standards everyone.
>>
>>9171487
>How was the cosplay contest?
Hilariously biased. Only fabric costumes won.
>>
I saw a lot of drama about their dress code policy on fb. People getting banned for showing too much skin and said people complaining how more skimpy cosplays didn't get in trouble
>>
>>9171616
But if you make really nice leather or foam armor cosplays you're overlooked completely. Seriously the Iron Man and War Machine were way better than those stupid maid cosplays.
>>
>>9171658
It's true, is the sad part. Basically if you're a thin pretty girl the dress code doesn't apply to you, but if you're a man or fat chick you're basically boned and literally getting pulled over by staff to have your skirt/shorts/bottoms measured.
>>
>>9171682
I can see this being true. I know there was some chick in a yellow bunny outfit walking around with her ass hanging out
>>
>>9171682
Well duh. No one wants to see a fat ass landwhale have her guts sticking out. It could give someone a heart attack, alongside him or her.
>>
>>9171616
>>9171633
This. I was betting money on the Godzilla taking best in show or at least placing but it didn't get anything.

San Japan has always been all about sewing though, almost to the comical point.
>>
>>9171616
I'm assuming you're talking about these two. If so, yeah, literally the same quality as any Rem/Ram cosplay i've ever seen.
>>
>>9171728
War Machine cosplay here. At pre judging the judge did not ask us any real questions when it came to our costumes. She didnt seem enthusiastic and only asked about how we did the patterns. These two were behind us and when they got up to the other judge, the questions were just being fired off. Not trying to shit on their or anyones cosplay, just saying there is serious bias towards anything that isnt sewing and wanted to give a perspective from what was happening behind the scenes.
>>
>>9171681
>Seriously the Iron Man and War Machine were way better than those stupid maid cosplays.
Thanks!
>>
>>9171732
Enter at A-Kon. They actually know the value of non-sewn cosplays. San Japan has always been extremely bias in their main show. The Hall Contest is a little better because the judges have actually worked with material besides fabric before, so they know it's a challenge. Your cosplay was great btw!
>>
>>9171715
Well no shit, but that's not an excuse to let some people slide. It needs equal enforcement. I don't want to see any asses hanging out, be it from buttergoblins or playboy bunnies (though lets be real there's none of them).
>>
>>9171748
San Japan should just fucking announce they only want sewn cosplays if that's the case then.
>>
>>9171748
>Your cosplay was great btw!
Hey thanks! I actually entered comicapalooza and Fan Expo Dallas and it wasnt biased there. Lots of different techniques and materials. I wouldve gone to A-kon but it was at the same time as Fan Expo
>>
>>9171732
Your group was fucking great, especially with the moving turret over your shoulder. Talk about impressive. I'm sorry the judges didn't care about armor cosplays, it was obvious there was a shit ton of work put into yours and the iron man partner.
Needless to say, I'm disappointed in the results..
>>
Who all won the hall contest? We left after that first godawful skit.
>>
>>9171748
I don't know about that, 95% of the winners at this year's A-Kon were mostly sewn cosplays, hardly any armor at all. And most of the winners were Sailor Moon related, in every category.
>>
>>9171771
I remember that. What the fuck was up with that? Is this the year to give our awards to generic cosplays?

Just wanted to let you know that you guys were amazing and that I hope this trend of sewing-only awards will just damn stop. I started to really notice it since AKon, but it just keeps getting worse.
>>
Anyone else peeved the cosplay show entries were online only this year?
>>
>>9171771

I competed this year at Akon many times. Things that look good on stage, don't always look good up close. Sure armor may look great, but when you notice everything seems hot glued or duct taped together and falling apart backstage, you can start to understand why certain cosplay are chosen over others.

At least the akon judges ask legit questions in my experience.
>>
>>9171817
???
Speaking as a backstage contestant, I saw amazingly crafted armor and also a lot of shit armor. But still, the actually GOOD armor deserves an award just as much as cosplays that are mostly sewn.
It's still pretty obvious that AKon judges were biased.

Thanks guys. Not to toot my own horn but I actually made both the suits and these are my first costumes I ever made. I bring it up because when I told the judge this, there was no reaction from her. I feel bad for the other armor and bigger costumes that were left out, especially the Godzilla and Yokai watch cat. Godzilla shouldve won best in show
>>
Been browsing the photo albums of the con on Facebook today. I don't want to feel like a narcissist, but I didn't take many pictures of my cosplay myself and I'd like to have some for posterity.

It's my first cosplay though so I'll probably be all stiff and awkwardly posed in 'em.
>>
>>9171715
I think someone actually *did* have a heart attack at this con. I saw an obese black girl getting wheeled out by SAFD last night at the Marriott Riverwalk. Not sure what happened but things looks pretty bad.
>>
>>9171877
A friend told me that the flashing lights were due to A) A dealer was caught selling bootleg shit (right next to the official vendors, too) and B) some dude tried to snatch and dash in the artist's alley and got tackled at the door, then arrested for theft.

Not sure what the ambulance was for though.
>>
>>9171835
Dude that took your picture while cosplaying as Dallas here: Didn't know about any of this nonsense until now and my opinions are the same with one caviot; I didn't see the Iron Man cos and really wish I had.
>>
>>9171915
The flashing lights were from the ambulance at the Marriott, which makes absolutely no sense for either of those stories.
There were a lot of sirens throughout the weekend though so there might be some legitimacy. Just not the flashing lights from Saturday night.
>>
So what the fuck did I miss? All I know is some nigger kept trashing cosplayers ouside the con using god as an excuse.
>>
>>9171974
Wasn't there today but I saw some videos of him on Facebook. Called the attendees pedophiles and perverts and the usual nonsense. I think he got escorted away by police.
>>
>>9171822

Oh there has been armor before, but unless you know exactly how much they made themselves or if anything was commissioned then it's hard to say.

I'm not sure why you think they haven't given awards to people in armor. They have at least one person in armor win each year. It usually ends up with people on cgl bitching about it because they somehow worked harder than the person who made armor somehow.
>>
>>9171997
>unless you know exactly how much they made themselves or if anything was commissioned then it's hard to say
Exact same thing goes for sewn cosplays

>at least one person in armor wins each year
That's the point? One or two armor cosplays versus ~15 or so sewn cosplays winning awards sounds totally fair amiright

Jesus christ are you literally retarded?
>>
>>9171974
It was at like, 11:00 Saturday. Some dude with a bugle and hoverboard was cruising around outside the hotel yelling about Jesus. It probably didn't last long because we went across the street like 40 minutes later and he was gone.

>>
>>9172092

>>
>>9172093
Garrus won best in theme. You know, the cyborg and robots theme? The cosplay itself was amazing but i feel like it was the copout award. We gotta give him something that isnt a top award, which is a shame because it was fucking sweet
>>
>>9172020
Considering the entries are about 15:1 in favor of sewing, yeah that seems about fair.
>>
>>9172106
15:1? You're hilarious. Really anon.
>>
>>9172099
Oh ok, thanks for the heads up.
>>
What did people think about the Hawk and anders cosplay that won the novice category?
>>
Why is sewing preferred? This is a cosplay competition, not a sewing competition, if everyone made their own stuff and the craftsmanship is good on both then something that was sewn and something that way made in some other way should be equal.
>>
>>9171997
Some cosplays have armor. Some have sewing. If you’re alienating a certain group from winning awards because you “arent sure whether they made it or not,” it’s fucking bullshit because who knows if the sewn cosplays made it themselves or not either? Get a grip over yourself.
>>

>>
>>9172169
>>9172179

>>
>>9172130
That just means that the judges they pick are most familiar with sewing. If they don't understand much of the process of armor, it's hard to judge what's a good armor cosplay aside from "well it looks nice"
Versus if they're familiar with sewing, they have more to go off of.

It's an issue on the part of whoever picks the judges, really. Some cons have a few judges that do mostly sewing and a few judges that do mostly armor, so you end up with a fairer winner.

I'm not even that mad about the sewing bias, I'm just mad that that shitty cosplay won. One of the judges probably had Rem as their waifu.
>>
>>9172187
I wasn't expecting to get a real answer but thank you that actually makes alot of sense.

No. It was announced ahead of time and I remember there were posts about it in Texas threads.
>>
>>9172101
According to their rules the theme was "sci-fi and futuristic" which honestly is Mass Effect, so to me that doesn't seem like a cop-out
The cyborg theme was the con
>>
>>9172220
Yeah if you didn't read the rules you can't hold the contest responsible. I feel like I was inundated with announcements about making sure to sign up between Facebook and reminders here.

Except those files were clearly just ripped from the internet and copied. You can't say it's good if it was just copied.

Wat...?
>>

sounds like someones mad that tumblr comes here and to other boards which really shouldnt be a surprise at all if that person had spent even a minute on /co/

Thank you! There is so much documentation and guides on how to make those armor cosplay, you simply have to resize the images in photoshop to your proportions, print, paste, cut out the foam, shape, then paint.

Those guys did a good job, but you see them at multiple cons OR you see the exact same armors at multiple cons. When the movies first came out they were impressive. Not now.

plus, purely armor cosplays are not as impressive as the mixed media ones that use all sorts of techniques. A high tier cosplay should be one that requires you to sew, make armor, prop design and fabrication, do lighting, a bit of makeup, maybe even some prosthetic.

you should have to be more than a one trick pony

While all that's true, stuff was winning that was purely sewing that really shouldn't have based on craftsmanship and difficulty level, pic very related. This won something for masters division, I forget what cause I was buzzed in the audience most of the show but the wings were a harness you can buy complete from stores and they were all wrinkled and floppy, I checked it out after the show when she was leaving. The work on the train and bodice were good but they were plain and simple sewing techniques, nothing unusual or special. Really the only thing that was master level was her head piece, the rest was bad-to-mediocre, imo anyway.
>>
>>9172758
This one hasnt even reached bump limit.
>>
>>9172760
This cosplay seriously looked like Spencers lingerie. Absolutely nothing award winning about it.
>>
>>9172760
Didnt that woman with the massive cream dress that won something do the exact same thing with a huge blue dress last year? I think she won something there too.

So I guess the sewing folks can be one trick ponies as well
>>
>>9172775
Her stuff is actually incredible though. I got to see her dress in person backstage this year and it was breathtaking. She did all of the embroidery by hand and worked on that dress for like three months. There's a huge album on her facebook of her progress pictures. She definitely deserved her award.

War Machine here. Not gonna lie I got the models online. However, in order to size and scale them correctly I had to learn how to use 3D modeling program. I then converted the models into patterns and had to clean them up due to poor conversion. Im not saying sewing is easier or harder, I have friends who doing sewing with their cosplays and their work can be as harder and more tedious than armor. Its why I took the extra mile to learn to do LEDs and the moving shoulder gun with circuitry. What isnt fair though is how flippant the judges were at pre judging to anything that wasnt sewing and how dismissive people are to ones work.
>>
>>9172775
Yeah she won in a giant Cinderella style ballgown last year. So yes that anon saying the armor stuff is all one trick ponies is full of shit.
>>
>>9172784
Can you give us a close up of some of this embroidery please? I keep hearing about how great it is but I also have a friend who saw it up close and said that the looping on it was sloppy because it was done so fast.
>>
>>9172784
I sadly didnt get to see it up close but I did see her dress last year and I have to agree that she is an utterly amazing seamstress.

I'm just for the lack of a better term, salty that she won an award doing something very similar that she has already been awarded for.
>>
>>9172792
Installing LEDs and using 3D modeling programs is difficult as hell and impressive when done right! I'm mad for you, War Machine. Results were shit.
>>
>>9172807
I think it comes down to the fact that so many people do Iron Man cosplays. Last year had two more of them also with LEDs and moving parts.

https://youtu.be/_j3wxHzkxu4?t=2266

I am wondering if these are the same guys as this year or not. All of these suits are amazing, but have become a dime a dozen in the contest scene

War Machine here, youre right. One reason why I wanted to War Machine. Also, were not the guys from last year. What I thought would also set us apart from all other Iron Men costumes was that these were the first costumes Ive ever made, but the judge didnt seem tl care when I told her that.
>>9172807
Lol yeah 3d modeling is rough. I dont have any pics of scaling War Machine but heres what Im currently working on for my next costume
>>
>>9172843
Fuuuuuuck is that Gypsy Danger? Finish that right now, I want pics.
>>
>>9172843
The judges might have thought you didn't actually make the cosplay.. since it was your first one and it was extremely well done.
It's bullshit reasoning, but a possibility.
>>
Everyone bitter about not winning seem to forget contests are completely subjective. If you can't accept that, don't compete.
>>
>>9172835
actually no, Shes been doing embroidery for at least a year now.

That being said, Ive gone through everything that was easily available and her dressmaking skills have progressed rapidly from the first photo she has posted in may 2015. But, I feel she has experience even before than that she has been drawing upon.

All and all. She has progressed leaps and bounds from an amateur into a professional in this year. But in regards to cosplay and creation of a character, she is still simply doing the same thing. over and over and over. just better every time.
>>
>>9171748
Akons been biased every year for like the past 5 years if not longer. Almost every year the same people win because they become friends with the judges. The cosplay head is a sweetheart, but like it's totally biased.
>>
>>9172908
so basically dont expect to be judged fairly at any texas con
>>
Anyone else find it funny the best of show prize was a 3D printer for a show thats a sewing-heavy contest? Neither the judges or the winner probably know what to do with that and Im betting it'll be sold off for cash at the first chance. I dont know why but I found that amusing.

Haha ill need time, Im making three jaeger suits.
>>9172866
Well she never asked for proof that we made em. At the other cons, judges asked us to show proof but they never did so I just she took our word for it.
>>9172890
Isnt that the point of multiple judges? To offset bias?
>>9172914
Comicpalooza was pretty good with no bias. The best in show was a Charr from Guild Wars 2. He made a hammer, fursuit, leather armor and the jaw of it to move. It was amazing.
>>
>>9172914

Well you also have ton consider cons tend to change out judges every year. It's hard to claim a con to be "bias" when the guest judges keep changing.

If you don't like certain judges, then go flood the con's social media requesting guest judges that have a background in armor or prop making or whatever. Request judges that offer a variety of knowledge and experience.

Otherwise, you guys are just going to bitch every year about every con and their contests as "bias" and "rigged"
>>
>>9172993
while I agree with you San Japans preference for sewing has been going on for years now, nothing new about nor does it change when the judges change
>>
>>9172993
>>9173002
What I realized was how biased the interests were for the winners. Everything that won seemed popular on tumblr and the judges interests were very apparent.
>>
>>9172792
Getting the models online is probably what got you the loss.
>>
Does anyone have any cosplay pic dumps? I missed the con and I want to feel like i was there

I've been combing Instagram and Tumblr.
