I'm going to EGX and have no idea what to expect. I've only gone to MCM.
>>
Anyone going to Wicked and Whimsy this weekend?
>>
>>9155768
I'm heading down on Friday with a couple of friends. Super excited!
>>
>>9155718
I've been.
It's a nice little con but I find you can get a little lost for what to do in the day after a while.
Nice selection of stalls/artists and loads of food places dotted near the venue though.
>>
>>9155718
It's small, but nice. There are a few panels and activities throughout the day but as other anon said, you tend to have a few dead hours, especially because the masquerade is weirdly late.
>>
>>9155718
Like the others said, it's small but cute. More aimed at cultural stuff but there are stalls selling the usual stuff.
>>
>>9155456
That League only thing has some pretty decent cosplay guests but they also have Kenny and Kerry.

Speaking of shit the normal cosplay guests are pretty shit tier. It's a gaming con and only one of them seems to have a gaming cosplay.
>>
>>9157001
Who are they? I didn't even realise insomnia had a big cosplay presence.

How the fuck is this a Judge?
>>
>>9157882
They probably wrote them themselves
>>
>>9157906
How are any of them a judge? none of them have won anything bigger than a single mcm
>>
>>9158091
Competitive cosplay in the UK is a fucking joke. That's why.
>>
>>9158091
They'll have been approached based on criteria like FB likes and having won a competition but not being too big or "famous" to expect to be paid the same sort of money or expenses that a more established person would expect.
>>
>>9158091
That creepy Penguin guy is there too... ugh.

I'm amazed that spammy Killer Croc guy isn't there too.
>>
>>9158186
Too busy perusing his rap career.
>>
>>9158100
If Costume and Play run the same way they used to, they don't approach people. They wait for people to approach them or for people already involved to invite their friends. Then when events come along they open up guest slots for in a private group and offer it to their circle of "guests".

They don't really check people who get involved as long as they're happy to volunteer to come along and do whatever work is needed or promote the event. They even cover some expenses so you'd think they'd sort through who is decent or at least a little bit qualified to judge or guest but.. apparently not.
>>
>>9158235
Forgot to add, yeah the bios are usually written by the "guests" themselves. And for the way guests are involved they're usually pretty pretentious. I was brought in as a guest for them by a friend at an event a couple of years back, the only request they made was for me to write a short blurb and to pick a nice picture to "advertise myself with".
>>
>>9158100
A lot of I58s other cosplay guests are like this

>>
>>9160679
Emi-Zone (past WCS rep) going for group.
Ross going for solo.
>>
>>9155736
It's a big gaming show, lots of previews of new games. Great as a gamer, theres a cosplay pageant on one of the days, but it's not really an event you'd want to spend all day in costume in, espessily if you want to play some of the games.

Halls get very packed, very busy around the stands.
>>
Anyone see any of the insomnia masquerades? Either the league one yesterday or the one today?

>>
>>9162401
I think Ross is doing Quasimodo from the Disney version of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame
>>
>>9162230
League one was OK - some nice costumes but no skits. Also the audience was 1/3 full and pretty quiet.

The Sunday one was good fun. Nothing amazing but quite a few decent entries. The audience area was rammed though - standing room only.

The best thing at insomnia was the Dark room though - that kicked ass
>>
>>9162230
i saw both masquerades and watched the league masquerade on the leaguefest stream, there was a bit more cringe on the main stage masqs than the leaguefest one due to them doing skits (case in point: terrible mettaton cosplayer singing sweet transvestite, not once, but twice.)
>>
>>9164760
bit of an odd ecg choice if you ask me
>>
>>9162234
Are there any meetups? Can't seem to find any on meetup.co.uk. I mean, I might as well go with other people since my friends have bailed.
>>
>>9162230
Didn't go but I'm seeing photos from it pop up on my feed. Trash tier
>>
>>9162230
>>9164766
saw both as well, i quite liked some of the league costumes, I think they made a good choice with the winner (they cosplayed Poppy) and with the other prizes, but there wasn't many entrants.
Sunday had a few good costumes but no amazing performances. don't know who won as I didn't stay to watch.

Also yeah dark room was awesome, pub quiz too
>>
>>9164775
Might have been better as a finals costume actually in Paris.
>>
>>9165090
Went and agree. The judges and entrants were trash tier. pretty fun to watch though.

League comp had better entrants but much smaller.
>>
>>9165225
He's got to get there first...
>>
>>9165429
Genuinely no idea who could win out of the people mentioned here. None of them scream Outstanding
>>
>>9165667
I think Ross has a good shot.

He did win LSCC (beating Lex and Sikay in the process) and he will probably have one of the best acts.

Of course you never know who will show up with what on the day.
>>
>>9165992
I would say out of anyone Ross, but with that costume?
>>
>>9166110
The clothes themselves might not be impressive, but if you build the body suit to give the shape and the prosthetic for the face then it's certainly a variety of skills.
>>
>>9166578
agree, but will it be enough to win the place?
>>
>>9166602
- *heroes of cosplay narrator voice*
>>
>>9166578
The clothes are an oversized t-shirt and a pair of leggings, he needs judges who appreciate prosthetic work to win.
>>
>>9166632
Judges likely to be tabby Kenny Kerry so good luck to anyone without armour or a basic comedy dance skit
>>
>>9166642
last minute decision to enter where my skit will be me riding a space hopper and I'll launch it at Kenny. Insta win?
>>
>>9166653
Throw in a few slut drops and dick jokes at a family audience and you'll be packing for Paris
>>
ITT: people who only know Ross and haven't been arsed to look up any of the other named cosplayers

He's good at performing yeah but it doesn't make everyone else shit by default and his costumes aren't that amazing
>>
>>9166689
the named ones that are going up against him are shite though. The groups are good but not the solos.
>>
>>9166632
only if he actually does a good job with the makeup
>>
>>9166705
GoldenMochi can turn a good costume if she gets them finished. She did one that had loads of embroidery that looked lovely.
>>

So what is that MCM ISIS group actually about?
>>
>>9171591
Post it?
>>
so apparently weekend priority passes for MCM have already sold out with absolutely no warning. Some people I know are saying it's just the site being bugged but I've heard nothing definitive either way.
>>
is anyone going to the Bristol anime and gaming con in November? I'm at UoB.. eh I'm new to this.
>>
>>9169082
It was a disaster...
>>
would it be better to go to MCM for Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday? I've never been to a convention for more than a day before and was planning on getting a weekend ticket because it's better value for money but they're suddenly sold out so....would be nice if they had the little gauge thing on the site this year like they normally do so you can tell how fast tickets are selling out..
>>
The official Facebook page for MCM London announced ticket sales took an unexpected surge meaning the weekend ones are fully sold out.

But people are still thinking that it's just a mistake and more will be released. No, MCM is crowded as it is already and doesn't need to release anymore when there are other tickets available.

>>9172404

I recommend Friday & Saturday. Only because the Friday is usually one of the more quiet days and you can do a lot more as the crowd isn't so large. Saturday is manic as always but more things happen that day. Depends on what tickets you buy too, Early Entry or General. The queue system changes every year so hopefully it's decent this time around for the non weekend buyers because for some reason MCM like to really make it complicated.
>>
>>9171738
I'm a UWE fresher and will most likely be there!
Will you be cosplaying or just attending?
>>
>>9172428
They dropped the number of weekend tickets by a third and did not warn people about this. They've added admin fees per ticket in the last week too.

Anyone else suspect it is related to the number of failed events they tried to start this year?
>>
>>9162530

The constant spoonfeeding on FB isn't inspiring.

Clockwork Dandy Noodles will likely be a judge since she was the solo rep and also placed.
>>
>>9179931
She looks like the stereotypical Iron Man crossplay with sharpie facial hair.
The only difference is she throws way more money into her costumes.
Everything she makes is ugly and it's not just because she only cosplays hench dudes.
If she invested her time and effort into something that suited her body type more and stayed faithful to the character design, she could probably make a half decent costume that didn't look like shit.
>>
>>9179935
tabby will probably be a judge as well. Or kenny and kerry.
>>

Noodles is really sweet IRL and dedicates alot of time to crafting. The UK needs more genuine cosplayers with that much passion for costume making rather than half the twats in the community who think they're the next upcoming hot coswhore. I hope she's a judge.

She made her bed and now she has to lie in it, and as much as we would like to, there's no need to twist the knife further or add more salt to the wound. So I won't do a post about it.

Speaking of, as I couldn't go to Alcon or the London 'meetup' (vacation), who can fill me in? Did anything blog-worthy happen?

This is why I quit competitive cosplay. I'd slave my ass off making cosplay and all the fine details, either to lose to a) someone getting their tits out or b) someone who's friends with the judges. it's not what you make, it's who you know and how much skin you show. It's a joke.

Hey, does the anon that created the A very unhappy weeaboo blog still frequent here?

Looks like AL are yet again being grade A arseholes.
This is happening on a personal right now, but basically a photographer is having his work taken by AL to promote a cosplayer that is guesting at their Birmingham event without proper credit. Tog is not happy with it because he doesn't want to have his work associated with AL.
He also noted this isn't the first instance of this happening.

>Mfw in the comments one person who I know for a fact has guested with them in the past is half-heartedly trying to defend their actions and pinning it on the cosplayer (who he mentions gave them the relevant info about the tog but they still refused to add the credit).

What is it with these people ? They clearly can see the organisation is shit yet they still continue to support it. I guess they just like the feeling of being ~'in the club'~ power-trip nonsense.

I have scaps, anyway. A little dubious to post them though because like I say- it's happening on a personal.

>>
>>9186673
Depends if your mommy is stood behind you or holding your hand and how many cheetos are stuck between your teeth.

Pro tip; cosplayers are people. So whatever "chance" you have with people will likely be the same.
>>
>>9186732

Consider yourself liberated. Manchester MCM is a million times better than London because you dont have to deal with the overcrowding bullshit and if you're a cosplayer the stage lays turds all over the others you've seen.

If you're in uni you'll probably have an anime society of some sort, just be ready for all of the spergs. I guarantee some epic stories to be told here later though.

In all seriousness though as much as people might like to condemn people from 'a bit further north from London' (No, im not going to use the word north to describe the Midlands) You actually have an easier time getting to everything. For most part you have a direct train back to London if you play your cards right, and you can get to the other cons like Ame, Kita, Brum etc with more ease. You sort of lose the unwillingness to leave that little bubble like most Londoners do.
Have fun checking out things that may not have been as easy to get to
>>
>>9187337
But i never hit on a girl before, i am 26 i aint no pussy i just never talked to a woman out of the blue like that in the street because it's too much of a "creep approach".
>>
>>9186822

Depends... did this tog shoot the cosplayer at a AL event? and was the tog there as press? if so, AL reserve the right to use any materials for promotional purposes, same applies to MCM / LSCC / LFCC.
>>
>>9186673
I'll come hit on all the girls for you anon. Just stay at home under your bed.
>>
>>9187368
Most probably not seen as he openly states he doesn't support any AL event so I highly doubt it was taken at one of their events.
>>9187016
I have contacted the tog. I asked him if it was okay for me to submit the screenshots but wanted to double make sure because it is his personal business and I know some people don't want to be associated with 'drama'. I explained the blog's motives and stuff, just to educate people about AL and all that, but he seems pretty clued up on them anyway. Just waiting for a reply so if he gives me the green-light I'll get the scaps sent to you soon.

I'm from Hull; It's strange to think there are other seagulls around there!
I don't know if you wanted tips or anything but;
- The Uni has a pretty active (or it was last I knew) collection of nerdy Soc's you can join and tag along with so I'd really recommend getting stuck in. There are a LOT of weebs in Hull. It always surprises me.

- There's a Cosplay Group you can find on Facebook and though most of them are casuals in the sense they don't do big, contest worthy builds, they were always very welcoming to people outside their established circle. They do a lot of general Meetups/Hangouts.

- I've never found it a problem travelling out of Hull but Paragon Station seems to be a black hole and train tickets can sometimes be alarmingly expensive, I assume because Hull is literally the end of the line. Don't be lured in by the temptation of the Megabus if you can afford better. I've done the Hull - London Megabus journey for many an Expo and it's been torture. I always fork out for a train, now!

- There's a Humber Comic Con (I can't remember if that's it's proper name) that's gotten a good reception in it's short lifespan. I'd recommend that as a good local event if they're running again soon!
>>
>>9187020
A member of the MCM staff seems to have found the event now and is currently giving some people a talking to who are involved in running it. Can't wait to see how this shit turns out.
>>
>>9188201
Saw that coming. Scottish cosplayers are the absolute worst, and I think this group consider themselves the best.
>>
>>9188223
Yeah, that's why I've stopped going to cons as much in Scotland. It's the same mediocre people with the same mediocre costumes acting like they're cream of the crop at every con up here. I'm only going for the afterparty at MCM and then bailing.
>>
>>9188238
I agree. The community here sucks and it's mostly because people refuse to interact outside of their cosplay cliques.
>>
>>9186305
Because the costume also involves a load of very hardcore special effects makeup work - lots of prosthetics.

if he does the makeup well and if he can get it really accurate then he's in with a shot.

Special effects make up when you cast your own prosthetics is an advanced skill in my book
>>
>>9188494
Agree, but from what he's posted of them already the prosthetics are really badly made.

From what I've gathered a bunch of people didn't get accepted into the masquerade for whatever reason, i've seen lots of different excuses but mainly due to poor communication from mcm. These people then decided to start a "rebellion" and host their own masquerade and a staff member found the event and is trying to sort things out for the people who've been complaining. And now the host is bitching because mcm aren't supporting their shitty independent masquerade.

You're probably thinking of Hull Comic Con. That's run at the student union this year and last year and is pretty well regarded.

There's also the Humber Unleashed "comic-con style event" which is the usual dealers room and fuck all else crapshoot organised by an ex-nurse who runs conventions now after being struck off for noncing vulnerable teens.
