Since menhera doesn't have super strict rules like lolita, it's harder to fuck up. Aside from obvious things like not dressing for your body type or size, common mistakes include wearing every single menhera-esque piece you own regardless of whether they look good together, toning it down so much it stops being menhera at all, and not understanding what is and isn't menhera.

Tights/socks and accessories are good ways of incorporating menhera into an outfit if you're still building up a wardrobe. Makeup helps to bring the look together too.

If you normally wear darker clothes and don't know what to do with pastels, go for something like a black and white fuku with a syringe necklace, blood-drip tights and an eyepatch.

To be honest, I think there's such huge controversy on what constitutes "menhera" and what doesn't because it's more of a theme/motif than an actual fashion in itself. It relies more on statement accessories and imagery to get its point across than any one silhouette or specific aesthetic (unlike larme or Lolita). It's more relaxed in that sense, I guess. It can really be integrated with any style if you have a good understanding of how to apply it.
Any outfit with the right "feel" can be considered menhera.

Curious, what is the age range of menhera followers/wearers in Japan? It has no bearing on whether or not I'll wear it myself (probably will), but I'm curious.
