ITT: newbie tier questions for cgl related things
Can someone give me examples of shit-tier satin and decent-tier satin* ribbons on lolita dresses? Just by looking at pictures, I find it kind of hard to decide whether the used material for ribbons is rather shit or not. I know that decent quality ribbons are not supposed to be shiny. But does this also apply when I take a picture of a dress using the camera's flashlight f.e.? Is good quality sation supposed to be dull regardless from the light used?
Random pic related for example. Are these red ribbions made of shit-tier satin?
*Implying satin isn't an all over shitty material for lolita regardless of the quality
What's a good shade of blonde for those with darker skin? Wanting to cosplay pic related, but I'm afraid of it looking shitty since my skin is naturally tan.
>>9123144
>I know that decent quality ribbons are not supposed to be shiny.
All of the ribbon on my AP dresses is shiny like your picture. I don't know about good vs. bad satin but I'm pretty sure all satin is gonna be shiny.
Any recommendations for non-brand places to get cutsews suitable for cold weather? I like pic related but more to choose from would be nice. I also prefer to get things like blouses custom sized for the most flattering fit possible, especially for when I wear skirts, but it's not a must.
How do the secondhand lolita shops like Closet Child work? Do people just go and donate the stuff they don't want or do the stores give them some money for their stuff and then turn around and sell it for more?
>>9123787
Google "consignment shop". This is not a unique, or Japanese, idea.
Is mixing lace types only bad if you're actually aiming for an old school coord?
>>9123477
Guess that's what I meant with better satin being dull. Its gleam is just barely notiable and doesn't stand out much.
>>9123144
Yours looks like pretty good satin.
Good satin: sturdy, soft, shines
Bad satin: shines like it's wet, crinkles, feels stiff, will hold wrinkles
>>9123472
How tan is tan?
>>9125345
No one cares if you mix lace outside of old school.

Where do you buy shorter petticoats? I have a couple pieces that are too short for my classical puppets bell and malco modes A-line.
>>9128980
Leg Avenue, although they aren't going to be super high quality.
>>9128980
You can roll a petticoat's waistband to make it a little shorter.
Recently I saw someone wearing a Prim Happi at a con and I fell in love with it but I can't seem to find anywhere that might sell one or even have information on it. The best i could find was is pic so I'm wondering if anyone knows or can at least point to the thread I should ask in.
I'm male, barely out of DYEL mode, and from Eastern Europe. Where should I start, to get into Cosplay?
>>9130536
>barely out of DYEL mode
Are you suuuuuure?
>>9130536
Decide if you feel like making or buying costumes.
If it's the former you can start going through characters that you think might fit your skill level, then you google stuff and try a lot and don't cry too much when you fail because you will fail.
If it's the latter you hope to god that you are into at least semi-popular anime or really popular western stuff and you start to search for costumes on ebay/aliexpress/taobao, remember to check the reviews before you order anything. Or you look into getting a custom made one from people (preferably in your area) who take costume commission, this makes it easier for you to get the costume you want but it will also be more expansive.

I've just discovered this board, so quick question
Is cgl as self hating as the rest of 4chan? Since this seems to have more women i expect it to be less misogynist, but also i've seen feels thread and fap threads.
Can you get me a general description of the community?
>>9130787
Bitchy sometimes, but often helpful amd supportive.
How should I go about doing the shoes and the hat?
Anyone know of a good pattern I can base this design off?
>>9130787
Catty and salty.
>feels threads
Although we are more touchy-feely. I'm not sure if the feels threads banned complaining about terrible relationships yet. Those used to get way out of hand.
>fap threads
There's still some guys here.
>>9130787
Pretty hard to judge a community on an anonymous website filled with all sorts of different people. But this board is honestly more narcissistic than self hating. Lot of self posters and trips. It's a friendly board overall, but definitely a lot of perfectionists and nitpickers. The fap threads are usually guys from other boards who like to shit up our board. They're generally not accepted.
>>9123472
Not sure how tan you are, but I would definitely reccomend Arda for a good color. Either Lemon Drop or Pale Blonde would look pretty good on tanner skin!

Does anyone have suggestions to stop fabric from fraying? I've heard there are glues that are pretty good. I was thinking of Fray Check if anyone has had any experience with it?

>>9130870
Now we're talking
>>9130873
>>9130876
Now come help me with this pattern
>>9130902
I would if I was useful with fabric.
I need to ask, though.
How much is it gonna cost?
>>9130918
>>9130855
It sorta works but isn't super pretty if it's a visible edge, but there's not much that is. You could also use a ziczac stitch or a pair of pinking shears, it depends a little on the type of fabric and exactly where the edge is located.
>>9130923
I'm not going to ask for the halogen lightbulb up my ass this time.
>>9130855
What are you using it on? A hidden edge should be zigzagged or serged. A visible one can be taken to with a soldering iron if the fabric is synthetic, you shouldn't use fray check unless you're doing a visible raw edge in a natural fiber.
Are cosplaying girls just female nerds? Social outliers that are shunned by normal people?
>>9134527
Nope. Just girls wanting a reason to dress like a slut for some attention.
Are there any tutorials for those syringes with glitter in them?
What's wrong with the board? Threads aren't getting bumped correctly and ones that are supposed to be in autosage are getting bumped to the top
I bought pic related in pink a few years ago and ever since then I've been trying to find more of the brand
I understand it's called metoo but I have no idea where to go looking for it as I can barely find anything but the same few plushies even on sites like Ebay and Aliexpress
Did I unknowingly buy some cute unknown brand item or am I complete idiot and using the wrong name?
For items that need to be drycleaned, is at-home dry cleaning a good option? I saw a at-home dry cleaning kit from Woolite.
I'm working on a prop that is made from three layers of foamboard. The layer in the middle sticks out from the other two somewhat and one part is a little skinny and at serious risk of popping off in it's normal state, which I figured. My plan was to add pins through the foam to add a little structure, and then spray it in several coats of plastidip. Would this be enough to give the foamboard enough to support and refrain from breaking, or am I wasting my time? I'm new to plastidip and I find a lot on using it with craftfoam armor, but not so much with relatively inflexible props.
I was considering thin layers of paperclay and polyurethane, which I've used on a mask before with a lot of success, but I wasn't sure if the same method would apply here at all.
>>9123118
How difficult is it for a beginner to make a Diglett mask?
Also, how cliché is it?
Assume I have 0 experience in doing anything remotely close to cosplay or making my own stuff
>>9143661
Do you just want something that covers your face or your entire head?
Either would be pretty simple for a beginner, though.
>>9143666
Entire head, kinda like pic related
Where or how do I start?
>>9143669
Paper mache, really. You can use a balloon as a base to get the round shape.
Make sure you sand it good before painting.
>>9142689
I wouldn't bank on it too hard, plasti-dip will make it more durable definitely, aka able to take wear & tear damage, but it doesnt help with flexibility or make it load-bearing whatsoever. If its skinny and at risk of breaking like you said, I'd go for something else. Sorry for not much help, a general idea of what your prop is might leave you open to better suggestions.
I just want to know where to get lolita dresses and stuff?? Ive been looking for like lolita 101 stuff but nothing ever mentions buying, or maybe im not looking hard enough?
>>9145980
http://thelolitaguidebook.tumblr.com/buying
>>9134551
You could maybe search snow globe tutorials and apply them to the syringes, just make sure to seal them off.
>>9145980
Alright I'll bite. New pieces are generally brought from websites of the brand itself (angelic pretty, baby the stars shine bright, metamorphose temps de fille, innocent world etc.) or in case of Chinese brands offered through taobao (check the taobao thread for guides). Various indie brands have their own websites or etsy. Secondhand lolita is mostly offered on lace market or through facebook(groups), you can also try Japanese secondhand websites like wunderwelt or closet child, or even get lucky on Japanese auctioning sites like yahoo auction. Good luck!

I need to have foam against my bare breasts. I'm hoping to glue fabric to the back so it's a little easier to hear. What's the best fabric that'll be best against my skin but I can also stick boob tape to?
>>9146049
If you're new to cosplay, don't bother.
Otherwise, break it down into pieces.
Is it worth to go to out of state cons? I only go to local ones in my state but we don't really have big ones. I would love to go to a larger con but are they really worth it?
>>9147546
Depends on what you look for at cons. Bigger cons have more budget, so there's usually bigger dealers halls, bigger artist alleys, more variety in guests, etc. AX also has a bunch of concerts, for example.
However, there's also lots of crowds and long lines for pretty much everything.
Usually, I would say that if you know people going, yeah. I usually go more for AA and the Dealer's Hall than guests, so it's not like there's usually too much promotion-wise to attract me there. I usually have a good time and don't regret it, though.
The only one I tend to regret is SakuraCon, but I somehow always get a free badge and end up going.
>>9146126
Doesn't really matter a ton, as long as it's not something wild like velvet or silk.
Cotton is fine.
I'm a lolita and I hate my hands. They are short and fat and stubby no matter what I do. Normally I hide them in pictures, but I'd really like some nice, lolita appropriate gloves that might fit. I'm not sure what would look good and fit the style though. Does anyone have any guidelines or sources that could give me some direction?
>>9123472
If anything, get sample colors and compare them on yourself. Looking at a monitor isn't always the best, but maybe also looking at cosplayers whose skin tones closely match yours may help as well.
>>9130855
Fray Check makes fabric stiff and uncomfortable on your skin, plus it looks slightly darker which makes it look very obvious. Only use it if it's hidden or if absolutely necessary
how do you order from btssb for an upcoming reservation? do you add it to the cart and check out, or email in an order forms?
>>9146049
You're gonna have a really hard time if you're not experienced with costume or prop making. But if you really want to do it, look into tutorials for making masks/guns/armor and as previous anon said, break it down into parts. It's overwhelming as a whole, but once you make everything in basic shapes and add details from there, it's not too difficult.
>>9148176
Anon I have the same problem and honestly getting acrylic nails helped me a lot. I get almond shaped ones, not super long, and it makes my hands look so much more elegant.
I'm making a bodysuit that has different coloured panels that have a piped edge. I've only ever appliquéd and I'm worried if I have to cut and sew big pieces like that I'll fuck it up.
Is it possible to apply an applique with piping inbetween the layers?
Does 170cm height work well for most j-fashion styles?
>>9149724
No you're too tall. Average height there is a good 10cm shorter
>>9149724
Kinda hard to say, jfash styles are different from one another and some are split into sub styles that are, again, very different (like lolita and its sweet, classic and gothic varieties). It depends on what you like and the look you're going for.
>>9149741
Which styles work better for taller girls?
>>9149765
Some classic and gothic lolita dresses are longer and are very flattering on taller girls; mori kei uses a lot of layers and often features long skirts; larme teeters the line between cute and mature, and unlike lolita it allows you to show more leg without breaking the aesthetic; gyaru and its various sub styles also allows more leg to be shown, though of course you should do your research on these styles before you start buying because it's entirely possible that pieces from Japanese brands will be much shorter on you.
Just a few examples off the top of my head.

I just really can't decide what I want for my birthday! Do you think it would be better to splurge now, or spend my money over time. I'm looking to buy some lolita pieces, as all I have is a Baby JSK and three weird goodwill blouses. I'm debating getting a dream dress at 150-200$ or buying some non print pieces and bodyline and other skirts for 40$ each. Thoughts?
I like sweet and classic, as well as aristo style. I can fit most brands easily and I'm 5'7.
>>9150749
>melt Worbla
What? Do you mean heat it for shaping? You don't need ventilation if you're heating worbla to shape it.
>hammer staff
Do you mean the handle of a hammer? PVC pipe is a popular material for staves and handles.
>>9150815
I'm always in the Quality Over Quantity camp. Were it me, I would buy the dream dress, then slowly purchase pieces for my dream coord for it.
>>9150140
I'd recommend wearing shapewear or a dancer belt under it, unless you're wearing clothes over it.
As for shoes, you *can* technically go shoeless but I'd recommend you don't. It'll get the bottoms dirty and possibly torn.
My dream is to own an obscure hobby shop like Fairytale Boutique, but I know they went out of buisness. Can anyone tell me why exactly? Were they not generating enough income to make rent? I know they were in Little Tokyo, and I assume the foot traffic must have been decent.
>>9151144
If I remember correctly they were kind of tucked away in something like a tunnel, opposite of the anime store. Not exactly foot-traffic heavy.
There is a new store called Ficklewish though.
>>9151144
the problem with that is obscure hobby *shop*

I know nothing about shapewear but am interested in getting some for cosplay. Where do you buy shapewear? How do you know if it's high quality? How does the sizing work?

Crossposting from the make up thread but what's bronzer's purpose, how do I best use it and what do I look for in products?
>>9152048
Bronzer is used to make it look like you're sort of tan. If you are cool toned and pale, you're fucked because most bronzers will look like dirt on your face. If you aren't super pale and have a warmer skin tone, you can use it for bronzing or contouring if it's matte.

Why do some people consider Westerners wearing lolita cultural appropriation while its the other way around? Asians ripped off European clothing from Victorian and Rococco era and made a fashion of it, so they are the ones who are steailng and appropriating foreign culture. Why is no one calling them out?
I don't come from tumblr, I'm not trying to flame and I don't have anything agains Asians but this seems so unfair.
>>9152657
People do call them out but sometimes these types of people are so stubborn that they'll listen to no one but themselves and anyone who supports their ridiculous claims. Irritating, yes, but it is what it is. If people deliberately choose to be ignorant and hostile for no real reason, it's on them.
I wouldn't call it stealing or appropriating either way, though. The fashion styles that inspired the lolita aesthetic from don't have significant cultural or religious meaning and there's no harm in taking inspiration from them to create something new and modern.
>>9152667
>from
Whoops, not awake enough yet apparently.
>>9152657
The thing about these people is that they have this worldview whereby the world in some way favours the white, straight, caucasian male, and everyone who deviates from it is by definition abused by them. Therefore it's natural that asian culture is in some way abused by the west, but unthinkable that the opposite could happen. Yes, that mindset is the very definition of racism, but it is so deeply entrenched that they just don't see it.

dumb question for the dumb question thread
i don't own a mannequin or anything so i struggle to get a good fit on my costumes, any general fitting/tailoring advice?
>>9152657
In the Asians' defense, nobody wears that kind of stuff anymore, aside from dolls and theater. So you gotta ask yourself if it's really "appropriating" something that's dead.
>>9152766
Wear it on your body inside-out and pin it to get a better fit.

I want to do a costume for a con's competition next year. The rules bar non-official designs, and the judging is based on accurate reproduction of the source, but the character doesn't have an official source design image because she was made by committee a really long time ago.
The problem is that people never draw her the same way twice, and there isn't one picture that has all of the details I want.
Should I try to put together a set of reference images that work with each other, or should I just throw in the towel and do someone else?

Are many of the Bodyline print dresses replicas? I'm a newfag to lolita, I have a few brand dresses but sometimes I need a cheap thrill like Bodyline. I know that the squirrel party one is a replica, but what about the other ones?
>>9154539
most of the older ones are replicas. The clock one isn't but it is kinda regarded as an ita staple. Your best bet are the most well-regarded pieces such as "the" bodyline skirt and their shoes.
>>9154539
>the squirrel party one is a replica
That's news to me. I'm pretty sure it's an original print, unless you know something I don't.

How do you determine what is a lolita brand, what isn't, and what's a non-lolita brand you can use for lolita? Looking at the brand list of EGL, a lot of links are dead and there are some that are obviously non-lolita brands, but with some I'm not sure. I haven't gone through the whole list but I'm mainly wondering about Excentrique, Juliette et Justine, Alice Auaa and Milky Ange.
>>9155271
>Juliette et Justine
definetly a lolita brand

>>9150815
Not sure if your bday has passed, but how hard is your dream dress to get? If it's pretty easy, I'd go with getting some staples.
Any recommendations for types of dress fabrics that work well with fabric paint, appliques and dye, that are also not overly shiny?
>>9155271
I gauge it by how much focus they put on lolita. Brands like BtSSB and AP have a huge chunk of their inventory dedicated to lolita.
I know Milky Ange mostly for maid outfits/uniforms. Lolita-inspired, but I never considered them a lolita brand, honestly.
>>9155380
Probably duchess/bridal satin aka lamour. Joann's casa satin is okay but it's not very thick, but you might like it if they have it in your color. But any time your working with applique the most important part is getting embroidery stabilizer for the back or any fabric will pucker.
For the dye you need a polyester dye RIT won't work.
>>9154539
Bodyline is not at all the cheapest option currently. You may have seen it recommended for budget lolita's but that's old information because it used to be a lot cheaper.
>>9155488
We don't have Joann's in Canada, so hopefully Fabricland has something of that sort.
I was looking into alternatives to fabric dye and I came across Jacquard's iDye, would that work well?
What would I use for face whiskers? Face paint or some form of makeup?
>>9155607
Face paint is the easiest option.

I would call them hair wraps.
Yikes, I bought a ton of J-fash stuff recently and all of the skirts I got from taobao ended up being a good 4" shorter than I thought. They barely cover my butt. Is there anything I can do to make them look longer and more appropriate for everyday wear or am I gonna have to sell them? They're typical pleated school type skirts in solid colors.
Pic related just came in and I'm planning to wear it with a knitted shawl over my shoulders and an apron on top of the skirt. On the off chance that I post the outfit on my blog or something, what kind of J-fashion should I tag it as? It's even longer on me than on the models because I fucked up when I gave my measurements for custom sizing, so I doubt I can call any coord with this lolita. It seems like it might work for natural kei if I style it right but I'm still trying to figure out what exactly that is. I'm not going to lose sleep over not being able to categorize this perfectly, but it'd be cool to know. Looking forward to rocking forest-cottage-grandma-kei no matter what.
>>9156299
Wrong pic, this is how it's supposed to look like on a person but it's ankle-length for me. Also just realized that the fabric is kind of hard to see because of the lighting in the photos. It's a tiny floral print with blue gingham on the cuffs, the end of the skirt, and the collar.
>>9155363
You can figure it out, if you browse through their shop and their release history. But I guess it's mostly through experience. Lots of their stuff cater lolita fashion (JSK e.g.)and are therefore often presented in coords. I have to agree though, if you don't have a clear idea what might be lolitable on a decent level and what not, it can become quite hard to distinguish the brands.
Excentrique is lolita too, but rather rare in the west.
Hello /cgl/,
Do you have any tutorial on how to sew a straight piece of fabric onto a curve edge?
Could anyone point me to tips for covering up moles? I've got a bunch on my face and they don't go very well with cosplaying.
Have a happy mole to compensate.
>>9156454
Moles are cute.
>>9156412
What do you mean? Generally if you need something curved, the fabric is cut to be curved as well.
>>9156454
Just layer on concealer. If they're the kind that form a bump, you can try lightening it with concealer but if you cover it completely, it'll look like a pimple.
You can also just Photoshop them out afterwards, if you're doing a photoshoot.

Moles are moe, anyways for makeup I'd say you should use light pink (skintone pink, much lighter than your skintone) Lipliner as a first layer,
a concealer to cover it up and do the rest with light makeup afterwards to "out-contour" them I guess.
>>9156602
Well, the neck line on a hanfu is curved, but the collar that will be sewn onto it is straight.
That's what the hanfu people told me, but I don't know how to do it...
>>9156813
I'm not entirely sure what exactly you're asking for, but it looks like you're asking to sew something like a mandarin collar?
>>9156844
Something like this.
>>9156852
The collar is straight, but the neckline on the body is curved, so the collar won't actually stay flat against the body. It'd buckle out just a bit.
I just bought an usakumya rucksack and when I wear it the bear looks....slouchy?
I have the straps tightened all the way but she still looks at the ground unless I hold onto the straps to pull her higher onto my back.
It there a way to fix this?
>pic related, but not mine
Where is a good place to get one of the sarashi wraps for binding? Any place I encounter is just selling a huge bolt of the cloth, nothing small enough for binding just one person.
Do bloomers work as well as pettis for giving skirts some poof? I'm not talking matching the lolita silhouette, more like giving regular jfash skirts a little floaty boost.
>>9157628
I've had this issue with similar backpacks.
If you don't want to sew the head to the straps by a few threads, you could pin it very easily and without damaging/risking anything.
>>9157691
Regular bloomers? No, not really, they poof just enough to make you look like you have fat thighs, but then they come in again towards the knees, so there's not really a floaty boost as much as a weird shape.
Bloomers with attached skirts stand a chance, but it depends highly on the bloomers, the length of the attached skirt, and whether it's a good match for your normie/jfash skirt. Most skorts/pettibloomers have really short ruffles/skirts and don't match most jfash skirt lengths, though.
Your best bet is just to layer another skirt under your jfash skirt if you don't want to invest in a daily A-line petti.
>>9156853
>>9156813
>>9156412
If you really desperately need a tutorial for that, you can google how to attach a yukata collar, since it's quite similar to the hanfu.
But basically, all you really have to do is mark the seamlines on both fabric very, very clearly. Then pin the seamlines together (right sides facing) to death. Baste it if your fabric is slippery. Put it under the sewing machine and sew.
Super stupid question. But how are longer lolita dresses called? I can't remember I know I read it a hundred times already. Wasn't it something like tea-length?
Can you wear a wig when yo have long, thick hair, without looking like a bulb?
I also have a big head, which doesn't help
I know it's typically considered a crime to modify burando beyond sizing adjustments, but does this "rule" apply to Taobao items, too? I have a black vest that I otherwise love but it's got a really ugly piece of white lace on it, and I want to either find a way to dye it black or just remove it entirely, but I don't know if this would be considered an awful thing to do or not.
>>9158370
If you buy them, you can do what you want with your clothes. You don't need to preserve brand, its not a shared resource.
That being said, modifications change the value of them if you want to sell them later.
Modify to your heart's content, you should like the clothes you wear.
>>9158275
I have a somewhat hard time finding them.
Is there a way to search specifically for tea-length dresses? At least on lolibrary there doesn't seem to be an option for this.
>>9159095
Searching lolibrary for "long" will bring up quite a few results but you'll have to sort through them because it also brings up other items. Lacemarket has a "tall lolita friendly" option as well, if you're looking to buy things that are longer.
I really like the Princess Cat jsk in blue, but it's only available in the Tokyo Store. Do you guys know of any way to order it? I heard some shopping services could maybe get it for me. I'm a total noob, so help would be appreciated.
>>9148318
Sorry gulls but I'm still struggling with this and google only shows me cushions when I search variations of "applique and piping"
>>9130790
For my shoes I bought some platform black lace-up trainers and added the red details with wadding and fabric.
As for the hat, I don't really have anything to offer as it was just trial and error until I had a pattern I liked.
Make it bigger than your head though, or it won't fit over your wig.
Good luck anon!
>>9159627
Can you post a picture? I can't really envision what you're talking about.
>>9159645
I've only ever done applique and my bodysuit pattern has seams down the centre instead of the sides. I don't know how to split it for the seperate bits without making a mockup. And lycra isn't cheap.
There's this little 13 year old in my cosplay group and I honestly love her, she's like a little sister to me....but...she expects me to do everything for her in her cosplays. I've offered to teach her to sew hundreds of times and even made her sew one jacket but I cut out and pinned everything for her. What do I do? I feel bad saying no to her, but at the last con I made her cosplay for her and ended up having to cancel one of my cosplays because I didn't have anymore time. I don't want to give her no options because the other members in the group refuse to make her costumes but I'm honestly just tired of doing so much work without pay and having to put my own projects on the back burner.
>>9159670
Just be honest with her. Tell her you'd love to help her but you don't usually do these kind of things without pay and you have your own cosplays to work on. Try to encourage her to make her own cosplays and offer your help and guidance but stop doing everything for her.

Dumbest of dumb questions (and I'm no noob, been at this for 12 years now)
What the fuck am I doing wrong with my curling iron? I had this old curling iron that worked okay on my hair. I could not get it to curl a heat safe wig though, so I tossed it out. Bought 3 nice-ish ones in different barrel sizes from ebay. I figured mine had just gotten old/crapped out because when I did some research this apparently happens with time and use.
Well, apparently I just suck, because all these 3 new ones also do not curl no matter how little hair I put in the iron. I can curl this wig with my straightener though, go figure. Is this normal, might it be the wig brand? Am I just that dumb? I watched someone curl a wig on youtube and I'm going through the right motions.
>>9159670
I agree with what anon said. I used to be that friend in my cosplay friends who didn't make things (I helped sew on little things here and there but I didn't know how to use a machine or anything.) Best motivation to learn myself was my friends getting (rightfully) annoyed when I would ask them to help me. I would volunteer maybe having some crafting sessions together so that you can help her troubleshoot if she gets frustrated with a problem. Maybe she can even watch you working on your stuff. Hopefully she'll want to learn, otherwise I'd tell her to look into commissioners or buying from ebay. It sucks to be in that position given how much you care about her, but you gotta ultimately come first or I think your relationship may suffer.
>>9160710
You can try Wigs Fashion haven't used them but they offer custom wigs
>>9160736
I don't know why it's not working for your wigs, but I have this issue with my own hair. I can curl it beautifully with a flat iron, but I can't get a curling iron to work to save my life.
I just received my IW tulle lace 2 tiered JSK. I like the dress all in all but sadly the shoulder straps are 2 inches too short to fit perfectly. It seems that this dress is better fitting for petite lolitas (I'm 5'6). Would sewing a new pair of buttons further to the end of the straps help or would it just flaw the aesthetics and I should just try to resell the dress?
>>9160736
When you curl wigs, you need to keep the wig hair in the curl position until it cools down, I find using duck bill clips is the easiest.
>>9160710
Drag queens tend to buy full lacefront wigs so they can style them any way, here's one site: https://www.wigsandgrace.com/
Disneyland, I'm not sure.
Where would a guy go about finding a sleeveless turtleneck in the pic? Google brings up a number for mostly women, and the few for men lack the neck. Chances are I'll just settle for a conventional turtleneck since this goes underneath a coat, but figured I'd ask first since I'm a stickler for matching detail.
Plus, it looks cozy to wear on hot days indoors.
Is the hot glue method to make a gem worth it? I'm a little reluctant to use resin to make a gem because of the potential harm the fumes gives out but the process for the hot glue method looks tedious.
>>9160814
Just get a woman's turtleneck, but in the size that will fit you. Unless you're bigger than a woman's XL or something.
>>9160827
I can go along with that, guess then I should also ask what size is recommended for someone at 5'7 124 lbs?
>>9160844
different anon, but just read the measurements online and check them against your own, it should say
>>9160774
The buttons on the straps look a bit odd in the stock photos but I don't see why moving them or sewing new ones would ruin the silhouette or aesthetic in any way. I do the same thing with all my JSKs to make them fit better and it works just fine.
How is this JSK, by the way? I've considered getting one but the tulle lace on the bodice squicks me out a bit. Does it look better in person?
Are bang/fringe barrettes on young adults acceptable or is that an anime thing?
>>9160925
Are you asking if there's an age limit to wearing clip on bangs?
>>9160925
There's nothing wrong with pinning your hair, even if it's not functional.
Just don't use those shitty cheap ones for kids, that looks ageplay shit.
>>9160940
Yeah I've never seen someone wear one. But I live in a small town where no one seems to takes care of their appearance.
>>9160925
just don't put a clip in your hair like fuckin this
>>9160881
I'm all new in lolita, so I can't tell you too much about it. Only comparison models I got are two black BL solids.
For tulle lace jsk: The lace feels soft and isn't itchy besides its kind of clunky look. I would say the lace is okay/good, not overwhelming, but sure leagues better than the itchy stuff BL is using. The dress is simple as it looks in the product picture, but I really appreciate it. It's a nice solid piece and the used shantung makes it interesting. I wasn't too sure about it at first since I never heard of garnment before, but I don't regret (had to decide between the black polyester/75D pearskin and black polyester/shantung version). The allover quality is very good too.
I can't say how much better or worse it is compared to other burando pieces, but is definetly interesting to (finally) see the difference in quality between burando and BL.
I'll write something about the buttons later after I got some good sleep. Pic related a shitty midnight pic of lace in question
>>9130728
This killed me. Never seen it on fit either. Blew up from it mid set. Laughing hard.
What a flop. I don't mind ironic cos play but flops like these give both cosplay and lifting a bad name.
So my advice if you are not near the size of what you are trying to cos play. Don't act it. Just cos play it because you like the character.
what was the deal with star chan?
What's the point of shironuri? Every time I see it it looks awful.
Do I absolutely have to be female to do JoJo cosplay?
>>9162576
Look in the archives.
I think she left lolita and only does cosplay now.
>>9162751
That's an odd conclusion to jump to. It depends on the character: You can cosplay anyone you want regardless of body type etc. etc. etc. but if you're going for accuracy, you have options even if you're not muscular and don't intend to get fit for cosplay. You should wear appropriate makeup and a wig regardless, though.
>>9161228
What about Decora??
I'm looking for a specific kind of white button down shirt. It looks pretty thick(?), but it's clearly not a regular dress shirt. What am I looking for/where to buy one?

Probably a really derp question, but I have a jacket I want to add lining to and then a bias trim along the edge of the lapels and the sides. Do I line it first and then add the trim? Or use the raw edge and add the bias trim?
>>9164126
It just looks like a collared shirt? Like a flannel but in white. Look for one in cotton or linen (although linen wrinkles like crazy)
>>9164126
It's a henley shirt with a mandarin collar (or a collar of some kind)? I did a quick goodle search for white collar henley shirt and got pretty close. I do notice that there are a few details on there, but you could buy one and modify it. I've seen shirts like that also that the Goodwill or other thirft shops since they're pretty common and could be cheap to modify.
If you did make one, as >>9164126 said, go for a cotton one.
If I have a Facebook page or Tumblr or something like that for my cosplay should I make cards to hand out to the randoms that ask for my picture?
I'm not trying to be efamous or anything like that but I want to see the pictures they took without giving out any personal info, and I feel like people would forget if I just told them my blogs name.
What are some recommended websites for purchasing fabrics? I only know of Fabric.com and Joann, and a couple specific for spandex. I live on a college campus in the middle of nowhere without a car so going to Joanns is no easy feat.
>>9165338
Totally. If you look in the archives there are threads about cosplay card designs. Its not uncommon (at least in California)
How can I tell if lolita on Taobao is a replica or not? I'm not familiar with all the popular prints so I won't know just by sight.
>>9165347
Thank you!
And I've read in other threads that it's more uncommon for people to ask for pictures of your cosplay nowadays, and I've honestly only done one cosplay, but I got 5-6 people who stopped me for pictures in the one day that I cosplayed, at a smaller local con
Is that good?
>>9165364
Assuming that reverse image search won't help in this case, I can't think of any solution other than familiarizing yourself with prints (most replicas are of AP prints, if you want to narrow it down) or asking someone who might know, either in your local comm or here.
>>9165381
That has not been my experience. MANY people only come to cons to look at cosplay (and take pictures of it). Depending on the day, the con, and my cosplay, I've literally been unable to move across the convention floor for 2 hours because I've been stopped for pictures so often, and I've only seen a handful of those pictures. If you want to find pictures of yourself, cosplay cards are a good thing to have.
Is there any hoodie/jacket I could use for the base of this design? I can sow on the orange things pretty easily, but I'd rather not have to make the jacket from scratch. There's plenty of black hoodies but none of them with wide sleeves/just being... big in general.
Also, what's the best way to paint glasses frames? I've seen a few cosplays of him already and the glasses always look fucking horrible.
>>9165341
i use trimfabric.com a ton! im sorry that I don't really have any other suggestions haha.
Help needed! I sold a dress to someone on lacemarket (that person has no feedback) and they want the dress shipped to a different address than the one on the paypal. I haven't used paypal in a long time - so is this safe for me? Or should I request the paypal address to be changed first? I don't want to be a bother to the buyer but at the same time I'm kinda scared how it can turn out.
>>9165491
I see the bandwagon hoppers are quick, aren't they.
I don't know why you can't just find a bigger hoodie and cut off the ripping so you get the right base you'll need. That seems like it'd work fine.
For the glasses just use a shitton of masking tape.
Have fun being in the spotlight for two seconds.
Ok, so this is super dumb, but how in the world do I cut/style wigs that doesn't make them look like a ridiculous mess?? I've seen too many nightmarish bad wigs and I just don't want to look like that.
Is Arda wigs good for natural looking wigs? I've always wanted to color my hair but I'm way too scared to ever do it, so I just figured a wig is a better idea anyways (how do people constantly pay for touch ups?!)
I don't think I'd ever buy a lace front wig though, bangs for life. Just want to know if the Arda wigs look somewhat natural irl! And if not are there better places to get a wig from? thanks!
>>9126997
Absence of anonymity.
>>9166163
Request that they change the address on PayPal first, and if they refuse for any reason, drop the sale. Otherwise you have zero protection if the buyer claims they never received it.
>>9166163
The other anon is right, you lose protection if the buyer decides to be an absolute dick. Then again, if I use Paypal on my mobile it resets my default address to that of my parents in another state instead of mine (even though my current address is on there and verified) - the first ever address I had when I opened my PP account. No hassles for me, since they can forward the dress to me, but I've heard of it happening to people when their original account address is based overseas and nobody they know lives at that address anymore. This appears to be an issue only when using PP on mobile.
I had it happen to me recently when I was sent the invoice while attending a convention. :P
>>9166236
Not that I mean you should sell it to them, just saying that there are legit reasons the "oops, wrong address" thing happens.
>>9166186
Depends on what you're doing, specifically.
The biggest offender I see at cons is cutting the bangs too bluntly (ie. holding the scissors sideways and just going at it). You should hold them vertically and snip it bit by bit.
Wig hair is thicker than human hair so blunt ends are much uglier if you don't do it right.
>>9166193
Arda's Silky wigs are supposed to be more natural looking, but I don't know if they really do.
So if you're going to try Arda, get a Silky wig.
I want to make the fork as a collapsible prop, but I have no idea what sort of core I should be using for a stable yet bendy shape. I was thinking of using aluminium, but the con I want to wear this cos at doesn't allow metal cores, so that's out of question. And I want to keep it as lightweight as possible, although it has lower priority than accuracy and sturdiness.
>tfw can't make it taller than me either because there's a height restriction too
At least I'm not tall at all in the first place
>>9166177
Alright, thank you.
I'm doing it in a con in like three months so I doubt it'll be relevant anymore by that point.
>>9166294
Thanks! Weird you say that though because when I read the website it stated that the original wigs are meant to look more natural lmao
>>9166440
Different Anon, but yeah, the Silky line looks less natural imo. Silky is helpful for longer wigs since it's less likely to tangle, and easier to detangle. So for natural, go with the Classic line.
I feel like this belongs more in the stupid questions thread versus the rainbow colored thread, so here goes.
How do armsocks look on armpits? Do they cover them fully? I can't seem to find photos that may suggest this. A cosplay I want to do has no sleeves and she's orange.

How do I spot a cute weeb cosplayer? I'm a normie "MBA" student. I'd be out of place at an anime convention etc, but how do you spot weeb girls, I guess they hide their cosplaying from the world. I could get a cutie like Anzu but where the hell are you all? erm, when I mean girl, I mean girl, not trap, okay?
I'm LONDON btw.
>>9167829
Have you ever tried, uh, talking to people? You can ask girls you meet about their hobbies. Anime and cosplay aren't as niche as they used to be, you'll run into one eventually.
You guys are pretty savvy when it comes to making stuff. How would I go about making an accordion-collapsible tube with fabric? I would want the "joints" to be fairly flexible for easy contraction and expansion, but the flat circular areas would need to be fairly stiff. This is for a costume, so I figured it was the best place to ask. Picture is related. I have a general idea of how to go about this, but I'm looking for more input.

All the otaku guys I meet seem unfashionable and not interested in looking nice and other girls don't want to hang out now I'm married. My life just revolves around anime, manga and trying to make more and more money lately.
>>9171058
A camisole should be enough but an even better option is to wear these blouses under JSKs rather than with skirts.
>>9171143
Not a cosplayer but I'm about your age and I've made some very good friends after I joined my local lolita comm. We see each other outside of meetups and talk about things other than lolita, by the way, so we're not just "lolita friends".
TL;DR: It's entirely possible.
>>9171058
I usually wear a camisole top with slightly thicker straps so that my bra straps don't show
>>9167858
I would interface the donut-shapes that you'll be sewing together to make this tube, but not interface over the seam line. That way your interfacing won't need to fold, but you'll have the stiffness you need for the accordion part of it
>>9166593
How do you think you'll get tubular armsocks to cover your armpits reliably? You'd need an actual sleeved top (like a long sleeved crop top) for that to work
>>9165260
The lapels won't be lined though right? They'll be self-fabric lined? I'd line it first then add the bias trim.
First time trying to buy something on Closetchild, filling out shipping information while looking at their guide, and confused over 'Please note that you must use half-size numerals not full-width Roman numerals.' It says it won't work if you enter things wrong, so I'm not sure what to do.
>>9171160
Not that anon, but many arm sock tutorials advise you to cut a hole in a pair of the crotch of tights so you can wear them kind of like a cropped long sleeve top. I've never seen it in person, but there is some armpit coverage.
>>9171333
Never mind, I was just stupid and I finally managed to turn up results on what this was all about.
I wanna cosplay one of the sisters from Kubo, but I've never attempted anything this hard before. I usually just cosplay stuff that I can sew (i.e. idol dresses, etc) that doesn't require any props. The most I've done in terms of hard props is huge butterfly wings, and after one day of wearing them at a con they were broken (this was in 2012, glomping was common and some fucking weeb tore one off of me and the wire got twisted) and I have no idea how to even start with the giant hat + armor + cape. Should I give up? Then again, I'll never get better if I don't try hard stuff out of my comfort level.
Does anyone have pictures of that one hagrid coord?? I've been searching for it but can't find it.

>>9165364
Familiarising yourself with the way brand stock photos look used to help, as they'd often include a stock pic of the item they were replicating, but most replica makers don't do that these days so you have to be able to recognise it. If you're buying from legit shops (Krad Lanrete, Souffle Song, Dear Celine, Infanta, HMHM, whatever) it's not going to be a print replica anyway, although it might be heavily inspired by a brand release or be a design replica.
>>9171058
Most people wear them under JSKs, you can wear a camisole or nice vest if you really want the sheerness on the sleeves. Personally I wear matching long-sleeved T-shirts under them a lot, especially if I want to use them with a skirt, but you have to be careful to make sure the sleeves match up almost exactly with the blouse cuff - too short and the line will be visible, too long and your undershirt will peek out.

Would people think of me as a lazy cunt if i made Griffiths armour from the 1990's anime?
I'm a begginer and the mangas versions of his armour seem very daunting.

Nah. I'm not familiar with the Berserk fandom, but I'm pretty sure they'd just be happy to see it.
Okay guys, babys first prop here!! I am making Roses sword and Shield for Stevonnie- also my first time working with EVA foam.
I checked out some tutorials before starting the project and when I was at the end of cutting I was out of objects sharp enough for a smooth finish. Before I go crazy with sanding down the rest of my blade with the dremel, is there any way to add some sort of clay/ paper mache to eva foam to build it back up?
Pic related is my sword, I'm really trying to build up the spot in the top picture. The bottom is just to show the general shape/build of my sword!
What are some good, cheapish practice things to do to help get better at cosplay for when you have no cosplays planned or just want to get better and don't want to mess up a potential cosplay?
I have periods between working on actual costumes which would be golden opportunities to get more cosplay practice in but I don't have that same long stretch of time to work on things that I would allocate for a normal costume and of course, I don't want to invest the same amount of money either.
I buy secondhand wigs off eBay and then try my hand at styling them to get better practice. Obviously makeup as well when I have quiet periods of time to do it.
I want to practice sewing and stuff more but I'm not sure what to do. I was thinking of just picking out random tutorials on tumblr and then buying old stuff off eBay and following them until I get it right.
Any other ideas? How do you all hone your skills?
so, im super new to cosplay, i finally lost enough weight for me to be comfortable trying it out.
I have a few basic questions. I know there is a pinned threat but my confusing mostly just stems from I dont really know what to look for or what I am looking at.
a couple of things, I noticed with chest piece under 76's coat that is infront of his shirt. I have no idea what it is or how I could even make something like it?
Same for the health packs or ammo shells 76 has on his arm side and belt loops. I see alot of similar things in some cosplays so if you just want to suggest me to a tutorial i'll be fine with it!
the boots and gauntlets ( I think I saw a tutorial on Big Boss' arm which is similar)
as for the neck shirt. This one I'm asking for clarification. Do you think I could just use a ski mask and cut it around the head and maybe attach it the sling of the mask?
sorry if I was rambling,

A few friends and I are headed off to Japan pretty soon and some of us fairly recently got into lolita and trying to build up a wardrobe. We don't really have enough just yet to feel comfortable bringing/wearing it in Japan, but we'd still like to visit Closetchild and some of the brand stores while we're in Tokyo to find pieces. Is it going to look too out of place to be shopping around in normie clothes? What's the clientele usually like in the shops over there?
My prop has an expanding foam core that I'm still cutting down to the desired base shape and I want to put paper mache on top as the next step. So my questions are as following:
>how many paper mache layers should I use?
>what's the best primer for paper mache before painting?
>do I have to sand it before applying primer? If yes, how well does paper mache take it?

Half and Half, you'll be fine. There are girls in there who clearly just came back off work or school or something and are in casual clothes but you'll also see the people who live the fashion too, you won't be looked at strangely or given side-eyes or anything like that.
The shops are almost always pretty quiet whenever I go in them, maybe like 3 people maximum - even in Harajuku.
Does anyone here purchase fabric online? I'm planning on making the skirt for pic related and the closest things I could find at my local crafts store is a gingham pattern that was close to the color and a darker blue plaid.

I usually get plaids from fabric.com. Otherwise, you might have to get a custom fabric from spoonflower.
I posted this in the help thread but I just realised it should really be here:
Question to those who make decent costumes:
How much sewing practice did you do to get where you are today? How much do you practice cosplay stuff.
I know some people will be tempted to post 10,000 hours a day or something for the sake of their cosplay e-peen, so at least how much costuming/sewing practice would someone need to do in order to be decent at making the cosplay they want?

There is no set answer for this question. It all depends on how smart/good at picking things up the individual is. Some people only need 5000 hours, others are going to need 8000, 10000, etc.
Also, if you spend a lot of time making just one thing (like historical costumes) then you're still going to be slow when sewing something that you're not as familiar with.
Bragging that you've spent 10000 hours on something isn't worth anything if it still looks like shit. Don't concentrate on the amount of time, concentrate on doing a decent construction job.
