I'll throw in something unpopular: anthropomorphized costumes, in simpler words, taking a fully animal subject and turning it into a human/animal furry hybrid.

If it comes out poorly, you'll look cringey and a furry, and if it comes out well, you'll still look like a furry.

Those seramyu costumes are made to be seen from the back of a theater, and from a distance they move around and present a silhouette that works well. That being said, the photo is of the god awful costumes they were using in the early/mid 90s. Really the worst ones they ever used.

Yeah the japanese are famously long torso-ed and short legged. The outfit is probably proportioned to combat that and give them a long legged look.

Magicl girl outfits range from well done Godoka to thrown together Flamenco girls to you didn't even try Sailor moons, I've never seen anything but Madoka pulled off well in person.

Yep, the early 90s version of the costumes looked horrible, but these look great imo. And can I just say as a diehard Sailor Jupiter fan that I think this girl best the best Sailor Jupiter ever?!! Even more so than the live action, desu. I think the live action version generally is what comes the most close of how the sailor senshi would look like in real life, however I consider Yu Takahashi as the closest thing to Sailor Jupiter in real life.

Ugh, this. Tumblr is full of this shit. I don't mind seeing it if it's just a set of hastily thrown-together pictures, because chances are it'll look okay and/or be easy to ignore, but once someone decides to dress up as Steampunk!Hipster!Obese!Leia!Elsa it melts into a horrible clusterfuck that's paraded around as a 'brave' and 'interesting' take on Disney.

Honestly, my biggest peeve with them is that the cosplayers don't know what the fuck they're doing and have egos the size of Jupiter. That Snow White is one of the better examples I've seen because her makeup is fine and she's not wearing a bikini with craft foam glued to it.

Literally everything from Steven Universe. It translates so poorly to reality, I think ironically because the body types are too diverse and specific. Fucking crazy giant girls with multiple eyes or arms, colored skin, and just terribly designed characters like Peridot just make even the best cosplayers look stupid.

Kingdom Hearts is my favorite game series of all time and I've never cosplayed from it because none of the characters look good irl. Most of the hair is pretty much impossible and the clothes have a weird Disney "poof" to them that real clothes don't.
Even most of the Org 13 costumes I see get the wrong type of leather for their cloaks.

Steven Universe, Homestuck, Undertale, they're all so stylized that it's nearly impossible to make them look good. Coincidentally, they're all major fads that attract a lot of awful attempts.

That Sugilite works because it's really more of a mascot suit, rather than attempting to turn an ordinary human face into a stylized character. The mascot-suit approach, if done well, would probably be the only way to translate most SU characters to real-life costumes, but the bulkiness of mascots means that it'll just look weird for different reasons unless the character is canonically large like Sugilite or Jasper.

i have never ever seen a vocaloid cosplay that looks good (especially miku!) I just don't think it translates super well into real life.

Inklings from Splatoon. I have yet to see anyone really translate the cute factor irl. I think the problem is mainly with the eye mask/makeup. It just looks really unappealing on everyone I've seen it on so far.

Never seen a truly good Sakizou cosplayer other than J. Hart. The cosplay can be beautifully made, but most look awkward since the art has such waifish characters.
