Could someone give me a hand translating >>9078100 from the last thread? I just need to know where the arms attach and how the bag is meant to shut. The picture isn't clear/big enough for me to be able to figure it out.
>>
>>9095833
Scanning the image with ocr and then dumping into google translate is scary. I if I didn't know that it was instructions for the bear, I'd think it was an article about someone hanging themselves. Clearly google is not prepared to translate this.

Below is just a raw dump of the OCR into google translate.

Does anyone have a preference for mccalls or butterick patterns? There are local sales for them every so often and I just wanted some basics because I'm use to making my own but I tend to always give myself way too much allowance and have to waste a lot of fabric fitting and refitting over and over. Obviously both have patterns for basic stuff and they seem to be under the same umbrella company? So I'm just wondering if anyone had any tips on why to choose one over the other.

It says to attach the arms as you like to achieve whatever look you please. It doesn't mention the bag being able to close.
>>
Anyone who has completed Choly's dragon: tell me how you did the damn spikes. I've messed up 3 times now. They don't look anything like hers.
>>
>>9094963
Noob here, how would I attach the tail? Same way as the arms?

Also I'm going through the other thread and I want to say I love all you anons posting these tutorials. My sewing machine has been collecting dust but now I'm inspired to learn again.

Hand sew it on. If you want to sew it by machine you'll need to alter the pattern by making horizontal cuts to the fabric where the butt is. I'd try making it a couple of ways and seeing which you like.

Also, if sewing the flippers/tail by machine I'd recommend adding some seam allowance because it doesn't look like the pattern has any. Add it to all the pieces. If you end up with too much you can always cut it down some. Better to have too much than not enough.
>>
>>9105587
What are you struggling with in particular? I haven't sewn that but when I've had to make spines in the past I've traced the pattern without seam allowance onto the fabric. Then cut the whole piece larger than the seam allowance so it's easy to sew under the machine foot. After you're done sewing then trim down to size.
>>
>>9106588
Ohhhhh, thank you so much!!! The visual is incredibly helpful too.

Well, first off I'm using fleece. I'm wondering if that might be the real problem.

I've tried the method you suggested. I've also doubled the seam allowance, but every time I do the spikes they come out too short or wonky looking. I also can't get a nice point on the end no matter what I do. I'm starting to think there's something wrong with the spike portion of the pattern. I've only had trouble with this pattern so far.
>>
>>9106911
Have you trimmed the seam allowance right down and clipped into the spike area?

I'm going to try this instead of the one in the pattern, which is pic attached.

I keep finding they don't come out looking anything like hers do and mostly it's getting a nice, curved point that looks more like a point instead of a lump.
>>

Oh man, thanks for posting this one. I've been thinking about buying it but I didn't know if it'd be worth the cost. It looks kind of mediocre for the price tag, desu.

Did the reference sheet actually help constructing it? Any overall impressions of the pattern you'd be willing to share?

I've had no problems with the spikes on this, you've got to trim the seam allowance down and use a chop stick to get the point out after you do that. Trim close or it won't turn out right, that's just the nature of spikes.

I'm going to try testing out the chibi pattern and see what happens but only after I get some work done.

I'd also like to know if anyone has any minky or deer suede website recommendations for pale/peachy skin tones? (Hopefully with having ordered it yourself at least once so it's not just 3rd hand info.) I've been searching for recommendations but I haven't been finding anything useful as everything related to minky is usually all about ponies or, when it is about deer suede, is 3+ years old.

I'm aiming to make a Lovelive plush of my best girl if that matters.
>>
>>9118606
This is good minky for skin. It's different from Shannon colors. http://minky-baby-fabric.myshopify.com/products/smooth-tan
>>
>>9118744

Thanks! I was thinking about ordering some other colors from them so this would work out perfectly.

Also posting a reminder for anyone wanting to participate in Choly Knight's M.C.Challenge for the Kitsune PDF that you only have a couple of days left. Saving from the thread is a nice back up, in my opinion, but printing it out is much easier in PDF format.

I'm not that interested in cosplay but I really want to learn how to make stuffed animals. I only know how to do extremely basic hand stitching for repairing clothes and such.

Is there a good book for getting started, or should I just jump into some project and watch youtube videos to learn new things?

Also, is a sewing machine useful for small-ish projects? I imagine most of mine would be 8 inches or less in length. My grandmother has an old machine I can have if I want.
>>
>>9146810

I've always preferred to machine sew all my plush since it looks better to me and takes less time for me compared to hand sewing. My five inch plush usually take longer to cut out than machine sew. You definitely need to start by learning to hand sew, though. Hand sewing is used to close up the plush, embroider, or doll sculpt.

I'd recommended starting with some of Choly Knight's freebie patterns (or the ones dumped in this thread) and read through the beginning pages of one of the newer patterns. I initially didn't like most of her stuff but it's actually loads better than some of the other free stuff I've seen floating around. She's probably the most professional in both explanation and presentation compared to all of the other patterns I've seen or bought.

But yeah, watching youtube videos, reading tutorials, and diving into it is the way to go, really. I'm sure there are some interesting or informative books out there, but I've never really needed them.
>>
>>9146810
I'd definitely use Choly Knight's instructions to get started. I've never seen any good books on plush making.

Im looking for a good Whimsicott pattern, do any of you have one to share?

I cant seem to find any pattern making formula or steps to do a man shirt,, i only find already made patterns and they said only to modify one..

does anyone know a site or something, where you can learn to do patterns from scratch, from zero?

Where do you guys buy fabric? I want to practice making my own garments, but I feel like with how expensive some fabric is, I'll end up spending the same amount making my own as I would on brand. There has to be some online shop or something that has cheaper fabric, right?
>>
Has anyone from the US ever bought auction lots from goodwill for sewing pattern batches?

http://www.shopgoodwill.com/listings/listbycatfilter.asp?catid=8

I'd like to try out sewing a bunch of assorted items. Would it be worth it to check them out? I know that a lot of them might be leftover duds but it seems worth a try.

Also I've had good luck biding on notions and ribbons and getting nice batches.
>>
>>9151370
What you need to do is go get some muslin. it's between $1-3 a yard most places , but it's not usually as wide as regular fabric. you practice with it and make a mock up of your pattern before buying your nice fabric.
>>
>>9151614
my goodwill only puts out unopened patterns, so you may luck out pretty well
>>
>>9151700
what i do is wait until joanns had a 50% off coupon and buy muslin at 1 dollar per yard.
>>
>>9146810
You can search DA for some simple patterns too. Definitely recommend machine sewing. Hand sewing is a huge pain in the butt and doesn't look good. It's a huge pet peeve of mine when people resort to it for everything on plush. For really small details it's fine but it's really not hard to machine sew most everything.
>>
Anyone have swimsuit patterns?
>>
>>9152251

I dunno. I find a lot of my hand sewing practically disappears when using minky. I was frustrated for a long time because my seams would never look as clean/disappear compared to the well known plush artists, but I have come to realize it's because they were hand sewing everything whereas I was machine sewing.
>>
>>9153525
I thinks with minky and machine sewing, you need to brush the seams since the fibers get caught.

I hate hand sewing.
>>
>>9153773
what do you mean by brush the seams?
>>
>>9153525
>>9153773

I pick the fibers out when they get caught but it still doesn't look as flawless as I'd like.

I seriously hate hand sewing, too. I really prefer my machine or ITH stuff.

>>9153885
Minky usually has a fur-like pile to it so you need to move the pile out of the seams, Or pick it out with a needle after sewing. (Like I usually do.)

I just got the Yeti pattern yesterday and I'm excited to make one and earn the Unicorn/Pegasus. I'm sad I missed out on the Dragons (I'm not the anon who requested it be dumped here) but I'll end up purchasing them eventually. The whole Mythological set has been great.
>>
>>9168401

Good job getting the Yeti! I love that pattern. I'm very tempted to buy her other Yeti pattern now to start a collection.

I'm a bit disappointed by the Unicorn pattern. I think the eyes are ugly and need to be fixed/reworked, but I want to buy it for the Kelpie and Hippocampus add-ons. I know I'll skip doing the MCC if I buy it, though.

I'm looking forward to seeing what will be released in October. I'm hoping it's something special.

The Kelpie and Hippocampus don't come with the Unicorn and Pegasus unless you buy it in the shop :/

That's a letdown, I was excited about the kelpie. I love supporting choly but it feels weird buying something when I already have half the pattern.

A bit, you've got people "copying" others trademark styles, and there's definitely some jealousy and some whiney makers in general who talk shit about their customers. But it's pretty quiet, probably because there isn't an anonymous forum for plush making like cgl. Personally I like seeing people try to be "first" with new Pokemon just like people with new cosplays. Then there was one maker who complained about everyone auctioning them off on eBay to try and get more money than say selling on etsy but later made a new design and auctioned it off on eBay.
>>
>>9184682
>Is there ever any drama in the plush community?

There's a (possibly) autistic woman who manufactures her own every so often when she's desperate for attention. Once, she whined about her pattern being stolen by a Chinese bootlegger selling a plush similar looking to one of her's. Note: I couldn't even confirm what her plush looked like, so I'm not even sure this is true. I found it ironic she was whining about pattern thieves when selling a plush designed to look like a licensed character is, in itself, stealing.

Other than her, the only reoccurring drama I can think of is the debate over the cost of buying a custom plush.
>>
Does anyone have an advice on how to build a customer base for plush commissions? It seems like I hardly get any notes/reblogs on the sites I use compared to other plush makers. I feel like I should be cross-posting to sites I'm not aware of or something.
>>
>>9189224
Kind of related, when mlp was first big white dove accused some girl who also made celestia of copying her pattern even though they were clearly different. She was just jelly. She also got c&d'd by Hasbro when she posted $50k in commissions on deviantart.
>>
>>9189253
Deviant art groups?
>>
>>9189253
What kind of plush are you making? Unless you're making something from a popular series like Pokemon or maybe my little pony (even though it's dying now) it'll probably be a little difficult to get exposure. If you're not making popular things, maybe just make a couple and submit to a bunch of groups on DA. Hugsandplushies on Tumblr is also good for exposure but i noticed they haven't been active recently.

White Dove never received a C&D. She WAS contacted by Hasbro to make sure she wasn't creating plush with fuck-holes like DA user Hoppip.

There's not much drama in the plush making community any more, not since the Facebook presence has gotten so big. You're about 10 years too late for massive dramu.

Apologies for semi-hijacking this thread. I want to get into sewing for costuming and don't have a machine yet and I heard it's good to try hand-sewing a pair of PJ pants to get started.

Aside from accessories like a pincushion, thimble etc, do I basically just need fabric, a needle and thread? I'm guessing I can find a pattern online somewhere too.

If anyone knows of any good, basic patterns for hand-sewing clothing (As opposed to plushies etc.) could they please share them?
>>
>>9190954
Do you have a pair of pj pants already? Turn them inside out and stuff 1 leg in the other, lay flat and you've got your pattern. Add like at least 1/2 inch for your stitches. Also don't do flannel if you're hand sewing. It frays easy and isn't the best to start with.
I'd say start with pj shorts cause it's less hand sewing, but you can still learn from it.
>>
>>9190954
Do some research on making your own pattern blocks, tailored to your measurements.
>>
Kind of unrelated but has anyone commissioned PlushPrincess on dA before? How long has it taken for you to receive your item? Im debating whether i should sell mine as soon as i get it even though her policy is not to resell her plush..
>>
>>9191536
why? :/ if you're going to be shitty like that just ask for a refund and let her sell it if its not an oc or something.
>>
>>9184682
>Is there ever any drama in the plush community
Sometimes in Artist Alley there will be drama about artists copying other's ideas/designs but it's never full on super-interesting drama really. Though I've had these two fat old ladies buy a plush from me and then make their own version of it at a later con. They didn't rip my pattern so it wasn't that big a deal it just felt kind of shitty. I've also had people on Etsy copy specific marketing ideas of mine. I don't like to go into details but they did the same product, very mildly tweaked, and also had half of my product description copied as their own.

So yeah stuff happens but it's not usually broadcasted.
>>
>>9191536
Why would you resell it? You just don't want it anymore after waiting for it to be made or did you actually purchase it with the intent of reselling it? Either way that's kind of douchey. Just ask for a partial refund if you're no longer interested in it.
>>
>>9191860
>also had half of my product description copied as their own.

I've had someone copy my descriptions exactly. It's the weirdest thing. It's not that hard to write your own??
>>
I really hate the feeling that if a plush isn't made from minky people don't pay attention to it
>>
>>9192006
? You mean to sell or what? I don't feel that's true at all. Maybe it just is poorly made and the material isn't helping.
>>
>>9191620
because i've waited since Feb last year and her policy also says no refund
>>
>>9192789
Personally, I think it's stupid to make a rule that says you 100% can not resell a plush forever until the end of time. If I were her I would tweak it to say you can't resell above the original commission price because I would never expect someone to keep a plush for eternity. But honestly if she told you that and warned you about wait times beforehand it's kind of your own fault for commissioning someone with crazy wait times and stupid rules. Maybe you can try to discreetly sell it somewhere after you get it, I mean, what can she really do about it? Just don't be a dick and try getting more than you originally paid.
>>
>>9192006
That's not true anon, skill and design factor in a lot as well. I've seen stuff made of fleece and even felt sell like hotcakes. Minky is popular sure but the actual plush has to be good like >>9192035 said.
