A thread for discussion, questions, coord advice, inspo photos for j-fashions other than lolita. Lolita is still welcome though, especially coords which are influenced by other styles.
>which j-fash styles are now dead? Which are rising?
>Which j-fashion do you wear and how often?
>Who are your non-lolita j-fashion icons?
Cult party and dolly kei are dead sadly
Thank you for this thread.
When I first found out about j-fashion I was 12-13. I knew about lolita at the time but didnt really like it. I was super in love with decora however. At the time lolita was still very oldschool and I didnt have a mature enough taste to enjoy it. But when I rediscovered lolita years later, OTT era had happened and I fell in love. I now appreciate and enjoy oldschool though
>>9092731
I'm so sad they didn't last, they were the perfect creepy-cute blend for me.
Anybody else notice that decora seems to be coming back?
>>9092731
Made this thread specifically to ask if cult party kei is dead.. I guess it lives on in our hearts. I still want to attempt a coord though.
>>9092727
Forgot to ask
>What is your least favorite j-fash style?
>What are the new trends that you see emerging?
I love seeing cool j-fashion without a category
>>9092748
I believe there's some kind of crowdfunding going on right now for a fashion book on decora. I'll try to dig it up off Twitter.
>>9092748
>>9092792
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-rise-of-harajuku-kawaii-photo-book#/
FRUiTS Magazine is currently crowdfunding for a book about Decora from its beginnings-now. I wouldn't ever wear decora, but it's the first J-fashion I came across as a kid so it's got a lil place in my heart.
(Sorry for the double post)
Is there a name for the sort of sporty-girly-pastel style that places like wego and spinns sell? Or is it just a trendy look in Japan? That's what I'm really obsessed with as of late. I also noticed that itabags were everywhere when I was in Harajuku a few days ago!
Sometimes I wish there were western j-fashion communities instead of just lolita. But I remember that people have a hard enough time getting an understanding for lolita, which is like the most structured and distinctive style ever.
>>9092762
I love the fluffy jacket and wing show combo. She looks like an angel < 3
>>9092820
I cant quite remember the name but Peco-club has stuff like this. The girl that made peco club has a name for it
>>9092820
I also wish there were some j-fash comms. If you live in a big city sometimes they organize a Harajuku fashion walk and it's pretty cool seeing a ton of people in fairy kei, decora, shironuri, cult party. Good way to make friends and then maybe try to hang out in non lolita jfash.
NY had a huge fashion walk one year once and it was amazing
>>9092751
Oh god, that carousel skirt is so cute. Would it be possible to handmake something like that? It looks like embroidery but I know very little about that skill.
Bump.
oshare kei will forever be my favourite because its so free but so recognisable
>>9092751
There's plenty of people who wear cpk on instagram. Its not dead at all.
>>9093846
Omg anon, you and me both. I'm sad that I can't really wear it anymore because anything bright and graphic make me look like 14, in a bad way :(
>>9093877
It's dead
>>9093877
there's only 4,248 posts tagged with cultpartykei
and stuff tagged cpk brings up unrelated shit.
>>9094271
That's because westerners always clog tags with unrelated shit and most japanese girls don't tag their styles.
>>9094341
And searching the recent snaps of SGS gives quite a lot of simple CPK.
>>9094345
>>9092762
i want a flufy jacket like this!! where2cop?
>>9094351
Summerfag detected.
>>9094341
#cultpartykei was actually mostly the fashion, the other one wasn't.
>>9094345
SGS?
>>9094632
Wonderful argument. They're still not cult party kei coords. White sheer dress ≠ cult party kei.
There has been some wierdly timed Emo revival going on in Japan, main cause seems to be the brand https://twitter.com/_acOlaSia_ besides Amatsukami Tokyo
>>9095137
First one is just Swankiss style, second one is a normal outfit with a sheer dress over the top, last one is not vintage at all.
I think you're the one that needs to go back to tumblr. Your definition of cult party kei is way oversimplified.
>>9095149
What is the official definition of CPK? I want to make sure I get my coord right.
Pic not related.
Shironuri is dead too, isn't it? I guess it was too vague as a fashion.
>>9095389
Far away from it, the only thing that's dead is the Minori clones but it's still as common as always in Angura which seems to be on the rise again since 2015.
>>9094341
>>9094341
This. Its still alive in Japan whether or not westerners are in to it now. And they never tag their stuff wit cpk.
>>9095480
Its almost always tagged with antique or vintage but never cpk.
Is Mori still be worn at all in Japan?
>>9095530
Mori as it started out (the super layered look that Choco created) is pretty dead in Japan now, and most girls have moved to softer less ott natural style.

Natural looks to have become the new mori.
>>9095667
Thanks, anon! I actually prefer this much more for everyday wear.
>>9095486
I always thought it was branching off from dolly kei using the cult party approach of all beige elements, using items like long bloomers.
>>9095667
Can you guys recommend more street snap blogs?
>>9095389
No, RinRinDoll did it recently.
>>9096081
She was clearly styled by Minori
This thread needs to live.
What are some new substyles that are taking the place of the dead ones?
>>9092758
>without a category
Isn't that just Retro? Like, a Western fashion?
>>9097059
Wouldn't that basicly be renaming? Either way, Fairy Kei got replaced by Yumekawaii (ゆめかわいい) in Japan few years ago and the new term pretty much happend because Fairy Kei simply wasn't Fairy Kei anymore with the lack of the 80s child feel.
What are people's opinions on more normal jfashion?
e.g seiso-kei and akamoi?
Do you still count them as jfashion or something else entirely?
Personally, I wear a lot of sweet girly things that straddle the line between romakaji and akamoji. I used to just think of this as a normal wardrobe with no real jfashion elements even though a lot of the items were from Japan. However, I've come to realise that even though I'm wearing stuff from dazzlin' , emoda, olive des olives, lowry's farm and other brands that are fairly normal and mainstream in Japan, it definitely stands out where I live and people can tell it's not entirely mainstream. So now I'm just inclined to say it's all jfashion.
>>9097480
I mean technically it's all jfashion as it's fashion made in and popular in japan. Idk, Tommy Bahama and Tommy Hilfiger are both american styles, even though they are very different. Japanese clothes will often have details, cuts, prints etc that are not seen a lot in American clothes, even if they aren't relatively as crazy as something like lolita or mori girl.
Not sure if this is the right thread to ask, but is Fruits a good magazine for inspo?
It's pretty cheap on J-List and I'm intrigued.
Are there any darker/goth-ish fashions that are popular in japan besides just typical emo?
Pic kinda related
>>9097846
Pic related is just Nu Goth and everything Angura (Underground) is dark, most dark styles are only labeled as Goth.
>>9097480
I definitely still consider it j-fashion as it is very different from the stuff I can find in western stores, and I just love the cuter aesthetics.
>>9097804
Fruits is a great magazine (though I think it's dead now?). I love looking at old scans and seeing how Harajuku fashion has evolved. I don't think it has a lot of lolita though.
>What got you into J-fashion?
>Why do you like it more than western fashion?
>What kind of japanese inspired things do you wish western fashion had more of?
>>9098006
>though I think it's dead now?
Far away from that.
http://www.street-eo.com/
>>9098024
That's a relief!!! I kind of wish there was a similar street snap magazine or collection of j fashion in the west, but i guess that's what Instagram is for...
I wish lolita was still more street fashion-y instead of an OTT costume these days..
>>9098026
I think the main issue is that people rather download crappy scans than having to pay, same reason for why the english version of the GLB failed.
>>9098113
Larme is doing pretty well though. You'll be hard pressed to find anyone offering full scans.
I got a boring skirt from f21 and tried to make it more jfash, inspired by ank rouge and swankiss
>>9098338
I'm sorry, but everything about this looks cheap
>>9098256
Did you even read the post you were responding to? We are talking about western jfashion magazines.
>>9098338
I think you should replace the buttons because right now they really feel out of place. But otherwise it's pretty cute anon. I think the bows do look cheap like the other anon said, but it still has potential.
>>9098338
I kind of like it. I would suggest trying to find some nicer lace trim next time because it looks very frayed and cheap. Also heart buttons that have hidden holes in the back, so that the heart shape is whole, would be much cuter. Agreed that it's a good start and I definitely admire you for trying to improve normal clothes.
>>9098363
>when you see a bag you've wishlisted on Aliexpress for being so gloriously ridiculous
Anyone want links? It comes in different fishes.
>>9098346
They were also taking about "people just wanting to download scans" and Larme is a counterpoint to that. Even Westerners go out of their way to buy the full magazine. I don't really see a western jfashion mag doing well though, if only because these magazines exist to sell you stuff and most westerners can't fit into the Japanese brands.
>>9098374
...literally everybody knows where to get these bags anon, you're not special. People have been selling them on ebay for almost 2 years now.
Source: I bought mine on ebay almost 2 years ago.
>>9097929
Thanks anon!
Does fint restock or once it's sold out, it's gone for good?

Learn2read
>>9098394
>Even Westerners go out of their way to buy the full magazine
You seem to forget that jfashion in the west is still very niche, many import shops can't even get rid of GLB issues for years and that while lolita is still one of the more known fashions.
>>9099227
>>9099236
I'm not forgetting anything, just saying there is a jfashion magazine that people are willing to buy instead of just downloading scans for. Holy shit you guys are fucking pressed.
I don't really know what an English jfashion magazine would offer. I'm not a Lolita so I've never looked at the glb, but other jfashion magazines exist to sell you stuff and again, many westerners cannot fit Japanese brands. What would be the point?
>>9098373
>>9098338
Get rid of the buttons, imo (plastic/cheap, don't match the others on the skirt).
Lace and red bows is cute, just not good quality, try other laces and grosgrain. Fully tie the bows and stitch to skirt with a hidden stitch instead of buttons.
>>9098374
post it anon
>>9099395
The original brand is Fiiiiish, do your own research.
http://www.fiiiiish.com
>>9099302
>other jfashion magazines exist to sell you stuff
Newfag confirmed, they are mostly articles about events, rising trends, tutorials, streetsnaps and interviews, only a little part is about paid ads by brands.
>>9099417
I'm not talking about paid ads. Where do you think all the clothes in these magazines come from? Magazines like popteen and larme exist to sell you stuff. Even street fashion magazines hype you up for brands being worn on the streets.
>>9097072
I love this, especially the dress on the right.
What magazines are you gulls reading these days?
>>9098016
>What got you into J-fashion?
I have no idea what my first exposure to it was, either livejournal or maybe anime. Seeing people wearing lolita in real life made me become actively interested
in various Japanese fashions.
>Why do you like it more than western fashion?
I like the detailing, color palettes, creativity and constantly evolving fashions and themes. I feel like this is something that doesn't really happen so much in the west now.
>What kind of japanese inspired things do you wish western fashion had more of?
Lace, cuter leg wear, detailing, headwear/hair accessories.
>>9097059
Peco kei/peco club(pic related), genderless kei, and neo gal are the only new ones I've heard of. But I don't know how popular those first two are. Neo gal should be somewhat popular because of the trends that are in right now, which is an alternative, "bad girl" kind of style.
>>9103815
not a fan of her style but shouts out to having stocky legs in japanese fashion its a fucking struggle
What Japanese stores besides Axes Femme, EM&E, and Fint should I be checking out to beef up my cute-but-office-appropriate wardrobe? Mostly looking for at least knee length skirts and cardigans/blouses with relatively little detailing and clean lines.
I really want one of Fint's tulle skirts, but it's probably never going to happen.
>>9104690
Honestly I would just look under the categories (sweet, trendy, office, etc.) on fashionwalker. I found lodispotto last year, which is himekaji.
>>9103815
why is that model so fat?
>>9104810
She's...not fat anon. Just average.
>>9098016
>What got you into J-fashion?
I watched my bf post on other boards lot and occassionly pics of these cutely dressed girls would pop up. I started googling terms and got very enamoured with lolita. My bf sensing my growing interest pointed me towards /cgl/ and I found a little fashion wonderland. Finding images of girls around world wearing these fashions gave me the incentive to try it too.
>Why do you like it more than western fashion?
I like it more because it's so inventive! I wouldn't wear certain fashions like decora for example but I love the way they look and the time and energy that goes into co-ords. The 'being yourself' element through clothing really appeals to me. I find that everyone in my country dresses different by basically dressing in variations of the same thing with a buttload of Primark and H&M thrown in, it's depressing when you consider that before I was born there were famous street styles.
>What kind of japanese inspired things do you wish western fashion had more of?
More small details, lace and cute buttons that really finish off pieces. Cute tights and more platform shoes. Pastel trainers and more pastel stuff in general.
I'm just gonna dump some stuff to keep the thread going.
I think this girl got posted further up the thread?
>>9104840

>>9103815
I love peco club stuff ! Reminds me of when I was a kid in the 90s.
>>9104848
Wow this dress is so pretty when worn. It got so much shit on release but now I really want it!
Has anyone worn a malco modes petti for jfash? Like not under a skirt or anything. Just by itself like how is popular in fairy kei.
I want to get more cute bottoms for pastel jfash and I am thinking of both pic related. Im really attracted to Malco Modes because of the different sizing.
>>9098016
>What got you into J-fashion?
I was a goth as a teenager, but I felt like the only one out of my friends who was actually putting thought into my outfits and co-ording things to create a particular theme/look, rather than just throwing on whatever black shit I found in my wardrobe. When I discovered lolita on here, I thought it was great that all these girls were actually treating fashion as a hobby and taking it seriously. I tried lolita, but it wasn't for me, and I eventually settled in gyaru, where i love the diversity of looks and overall 'glamorous' aesthetic.
>Why do you like it more than western fashion?
I'm obsessed with leopard print and it seems like the cack-handed twats making clothing over here have NO idea how to use it in a piece well. Brands like d.i.a and MA*RS integrate bold prints into their clothing in a way that is undeniably still tacky as hell, but a lot more attractive and cohesive. I also feel like in terms of media, Jfashion shops, sites and magazines present a more cohesive top-to-bottom look including hair, makeup and accessories, whereas Western trends are usually like 'buy this skirt lol'.
>What kind of japanese inspired things do you wish western fashion had more of?
I really love all the cute characters and imagery that Japanese girls have on their mirrors, bags, notebooks, phones, even food products. That element of making a style part of your everyday life doesn't seem to happen here at all. My parents think my leopard print stuff (bedsheets, car, car upholstery, suitcase, torch etc etc) is weird as hell and they don't understand why I'd want to match everyday things to my look.
>>9105649

>what got you into jfashion?
I went to a jfash panel at a con. It was shit but it got me researching lolita and I found cgl and took off from there. I started with lolita but have delved into many other styles.
>why do you like it more than western fashion?
For one, it fits me much better than western clothes. I'm really small so it's so much easier shopping in Asian sizes. I love fashion but shopping in the west would honestly get me upset. I could never find things that fit right. It's funny that one size Japanese clothes fit me far better than most sizes ever do where i live. I also love the colorful styles and cute details. Most of my western clothes are boring black/plain. Japanese fashion pushes me to taking fashion risks and I find that fun.
>what kind of Japanese inspired things do you wish western fashion had more of?
Pastel colors. Frills/good lace/bows. Interesting patterns. Cute socks.
>>9104959
Its in AP's sale anon, you should pick it up! I personally love the material just not the collar.
>>9105655
it's this same person shitting on gyaru on every single jfashion thread, isn't it? I'm sorry that some gal called you fat but you should probably get a life.

you have no idea how that kind of pic makes me happy, it's so cute,pastel,... and i just love it so much.
I recently lost all my bookmarks and I'm trying to find a shop, their aesthetic is very similar to Fint and Axes Femme, and they recently came out with an Alice in Wonderland collab series, (I think) and their prices are pretty cheap. does anyone know the shop I'm talking about? I realize this is pretty broad but I don't have any specifics from the shop that come to mind...

Etsuna Otsuka kind of does her own thing but her style definetly has elements of cult party (the old fashiony/antique doll styling, use of Tokyo Boppers and dreamy tulle) often with fairy kei colours, I wouldn't exactly lable it as either though; cult party kei isn't even a genre in Japan so I'd be interested in how Etsuna describes her style.

I noticed a lot of WEGO's earrings are clip-ons, is ear piercing uncommon in Japan or something?
>>9092775

>>9104810
That's Peco. She gained quite a bit of weight after she became famous (she does a lot of tv appearances with her mind-numbingly annoying, shrill "boyfriend"), but she super dieted and lost it all. She's now your typical skinny J-fasher with a pudgy face.
>>9111920
Yes, it is uncommon. Often times they will make an earring version and a clip-on version of the same design.
>>9098016
>What got you into J-fashion?
A mix of early decora and lolita when I was a young weeb. I only ever attempted decora, but I loved looking at street snaps of both growing up.
>Why do you like it more than western fashion?
I like that a lot of the various fashions or even just personal styles are very feminine and soft. I find it really hard to find equivalent styles in the west. Here it seems that feminine is more form-fitting curves and that's just not my thing.
>What kind of japanese inspired things do you wish western fashion had more of?
More softness. Give me lace, ruffles, more creams and beige that aren't for more mature women.
