Bad make up thread, explain to me why this looks so uncanny when the application itself really isn't that bad.

In my opinion, it's because of three things:
You can't see her pupils either because of bright sunlight or colored contacts (possibly both?) Which makes her eyes look incredibly odd.
Her skin is WAY too smooth and flawless (photoshop? face paint?) and lacks lines/some of it's depth (I really wish that people would contour when they do odd skin tones. face paint seems to erase a face's natural depth and it just looks weirdly 2D to me all the time)
And then the teeth issue, with another anon already mentioned.

Basically, it's tripping the uncanny thing because while she's obviously human, there's certain things about the way she's done the makeup that make her look doll-like or not-quite-human. Could also be in part due to her eyebrows and the elf ears.

Did a bit of photoshop to
-remove nose blush
-add a teensy bit of contouring
-enlargen pupils
-minimize fangs

I think it makes it look a little bit better, but it still looks disproportionate to me. I think there might be too much eye make up in comparsion to lips and brows; overdrawing the lips and giving the brows more of a defined shape might help.

Like, the instagram eyeliner + lashes just don't really mix with the pretty basic eyebrows and lips. If you wanna go the glam look, go the distance, kinda.

You clearly know nothing of makeup.
Just because you think the character to have 'barely any makeup and no defining features' doesn't make it so. From the art you posted it's pretty clear to see the cosplayer made no effort in her face.
The artworks shows the character having smooth skin, defined cheekbones, highlighted cheeks, deep pink lips and a lot of shadow around the eyes cast from the hood, which could be played up with makeup, considering IRL without the correct lighting the hood wouldn't actually cast that. You can still use makeup to create 'natural' looks.
Makeup can make or break a cosplay and that girl didn't even try.

I have never seen a girl successfully pull this off. Painting on thicker eyebrows just makes you look like a girl with thick eyebrows. It's probably pointless to say but bright colors like her eyes and the blue lips need a white or neutral base or they just end up looking muddy. More people should know this I think, if they want to learn to do good bright makeup for cosplay.
