2011-anon here; only five! Homestuck was my first cosplay, but I intersperse my HS work with other projects (it's nice to improve my overall skills, then revisit working on HS and see how much better my outfits turn out!). I've had two of my HS cosplays amass a few thousand notes on Tumblr, but I update ...once a month, if I remember at all. And I've never gotten professional shots of my cosplays, so no nicely-lit or well-composed photos to show off the details and craftsmanship.

I only got into the habit of doing photoshoots this year, but once you get past the hump of learning basic photography as well as remembering to actually do it it's definitely worth it. Even if I don't have the slickest and most HQ photos, cosplayshoots is still one of my favourite cosplay things.

Ike and Jay?
They were southpark cosplayers, which was how I found them back in the day. Both of them disappeared off tumblr for a while- they were popular about 4 years back and because they were 'hot trans boys', young tumblr girls really liked them. Which mean lots of people tried to get detail and drama on their relationship.
Ultimately, it drove them out of the fandom if I remember right.

I don't remember them being amazing or anything, just, not awful at the time.

At first I was just really offput by the silhouette of Roxy's skirt, but the more I look at this... The designs are just awful as far as fancy designs go. It's like the Lalondes wanted to sew big skirts but didn't want to more than look ay bodices, so they look half-undressed. But even then, Roxy's clevage-tank at least has some structure, Jade's bodice is just befuddling. And even if her design makes a bit more sense, it's still pretty awful... That lace apron thing on top of the skirt, for example.

Not to mention Dave's sleeveless tunic and pimptastic mini-cape...

God, there's just so much Bad about these. Can we have some fancy shit that at least makes some kinda sense?

You worded your compliment fishing well but jesus christ, wait to selfpost until you have something marginally good here. Everything from your lack of wig to sad noodle horns to the wrong purple to dark girly lipstick to lack of eyeliner and contour is just a mess. I guess work on getting your wig/horns together first before moving on to the makeup problems.

I should have made it more clear, I know this wasn't that great. I was trying to say it was unpleasant having people come up to me and say they though Its was good when I know it's not. I didn't even have fins, amidst everything else that is wrong.

The only reason the glasses look good is because they are real, though the vest was the right color, closer than the hair at least, it was just bad lighting/camera.

Serious question though, is dark girly lipstick really that out of character? What should I have done?

It's technically not out of character because he has dark lips in the comic, but it's the same reason wearing skinny jeans when crossplaying is a bad choice. Unless you are a guy or have very guy-ish features to start, it's just going to make it more obvious that you're crossplaying. Go with a lighter grey and don't overdraw your upper lip.

In my experience, a bit of a gradient usually looks pretty good. So blacker further in on your lips. It looks natural, and much better than a stark line.

For Eridan I think black lipstick can be fine. He's pretty out there stylistically anyway. But you need to focus on the rest of your cosplay first. Right now, the lips are blacker than ANY other part of your face. Focus on getting a good wig and bettering the rest of your make up. I'd use a greyscale eyeshadow in my crease, right below the eye, and towards the bridge of the nose to create a bit more dimension. Some contouring, but most importantly I'd fill in my eyebrow. Start off by using a water proof mascara to darken the hairs of your brows, and then fill them in using either a liquid eyeliner or black eyeshadow. What I usually do is that I wet a black eyeshadow and using a thin brush I paint along my natural brows. Then I add liquid eyeliner on top of that where I need the brows to be extra dark, as in where the most hair would grow.

The vest is fine, assuming it was a promstuck or something. Horns are not great, but you can leave them for now while focusing on the wig and then rework them later on.

Yeah Yahoo internally marked down the value to about half of what they'd been saying. People saying tumblr is RIP are basing it on historical trends with fandom internet spaces (eventually monetized, money never shows up cuz fandom is cheap, site owners flip) and Yahoo's history of torching properties. I've taken what I thought you all tried to tell me and applied it. It's obviously not good enough yet, but it's a step. The next step is to buy real grey and get this grease paint off my face. I would appreciate constructive criticism, or at least well thought out insults.

I'm much better at 3d art than I am with makeup, it seems.

But the cape is made of a wire coat hanger, tagboard, the cloth and the trim. The coat hanger follows the line where it touches your shoulder, and the front edge of the collar, providing shape and support. Then you bend and cut the tagboard to the correct shape, and I taped it on. The cape part is a large half circle. Find the center on straight line of the half circle, and attach it to the back most point of the the coat hanger, then drape it forward over your shoulder and sew it the rest of the way. If I knew Jack shit about sewing and patterns, I would know how to make it fit and drape better over the shoulders, but it was my first sewing project.

yeah order yourself a tube of mehron cream stick off ebay, then seal yourself loads. You'll find its way easier to apply, and you can do a lot more detailing with your eyebrows, eyeliner and whatnot.
There's a bunch of tutorials for that on youtube.

Your lips look much better like that though. With the mehron you can just barely add a bit of darker grey to your lips. hell, if it works for you, use whatever you use to contour and shade your face with for your lips too, so long as its not super dark.

I think the next thing that REALLY needs fixing is your need of a wig- that'll help a whole lot.

Getting there, but your eyes look awful. Try and use an eyeshadow brush to just do a soft contrast instead of a hard liner. Also get an eyelash curler if you can't just lift them using mascara.

Seal your paint, that involves powdering it. I suggest Ben Nye Neutral Set or if you can't get Ben Nye try Nyx's translucent setting powder (i find loose powder to be better to work with than the cake sort). Also get good-okay make-up brushes, Eco-tools is sold a lot in stores and is pretty good for its price, use the big brush for setting your face with powder.

For eyeshadow Nyx also has a good matte grey that's good for contouring and shading the face and eyes (i think you can find it with the "nude matte" shadows?), they also have a grey lipsick. Hopefully the shitty and maybe huge collage helps?

A highly mediocre cosplayer who for some reason had like 9-10k on Instagram got "called out" by another mediocre cosplayer with 5k+ for being kind of a dick. Don't know about Potato.ruler, but Daddytbh strikes me as incredibly immature and obnoxious, without any skill to back tem up and a clear thirst for attention. So far the worst deets I've heard is that Potato.ruler apparently denies people from joining cosplay skype calls because they've too few followers.

Okay, so I have sadly been around places where this person tends to draw drama. All the mamawhatsgood crap on vine a few months ago was about them as well.
Back on vine(adding it in because people are bringing it up on instagram), they were dating people way younger than them, they misgendered people going through that were going through transition, and even asked a person who tried to kill themselves how bleach tasted. Apparently they also treated a lot of people horrible, idk. People got tired and called them out on shit. I think it is all on the same lines on here. A big thing is the fact that they oversexualize characters and themselves when they are a minor.
I've seen them jump down people's throats about headcanons and ships. Like don't even think of the Striders having accents around them because they live there and since they dont have one no one else there does. Just various things like that. Plus doesnt shut up about how they made their 3am dress when they have made nothing else since and has bought everything. Just a basic 17 year old tumblrista that isnt on tumblr. I think the majority of the issue is the fact that they done stuff like a Jade "cosplay" that was just them in a bra. I hate knowing all of this but it just kinda follows around in the community

Hi! I was posted by another/posted on the older MSPA thread with my ginger Dirk and decided to come back to ask for some concrit! I found a new method of styling wigs I'm more fond of using an asymmetrical cut and more scenekid-ish/REAL SPIKES thing but I want to get some more opinions on how it looks. General constructive criticism on the look overall would be awesome too.

The expression just does not work, I'm not sure how serious you are but it's just not at all fit to the character. I'm also unsure about the gloves. I'm kinda whatever about gloves on Dirk, but if they've heart shaped backs like it seems, I'd skip them.

As for the wig, it looks a bit too messy for my taste. Separate the spikes a bit more and twist the ends together. Shape and length looks alright, but maybe try and get a proper flip to the side.

I want to cosplay at PAX and meet some easy and like-minded individuals of the opposite sex. I've never dressed up for something like this before, besides wearing brown shorts, black rim glasses and a white t-shirt with John's green ghost stapled to it. As far as reinterpretations go it's pretty solid. There's clearly thought put into it and the outfit's pretty flattering. Kanaya's outfit takes well to redesigning, and let's be real, her original outfit is hardly as fashionable as it should be.

I did a skin tight black longsleve, and black leggings, shapewear to smooth out where they met and because i'm soft in the middle.

Made the teal part out of some very clingy, perfect teal material. Collar can be done by sewing the teal around a strip of craft foam, then sewing it to the neck of the shirt.

You can iron on, sew, or paint the symbol. The black strip around the bottom of the teal can be done either the same, or a belt- your preference. I've seen both work.

I used some good, highquality transfers, because I don't trust my hand at painting. I've fucked up even using stencils.

I was thinking about this and I actually think that if you can't do body paint, I'd go for something more conceptual. Holographic cosmetics is definitely a huge thing right now, so I'd look into that and see if you can use that in some interesting way. Maybe use youtube glam look methods (high coverage, highlights, etc.) but without neccessarily using the glam *look* if that makes any sense?

This is really starting to get to me. I love this fandom and everything it's done for me. I love the comic, despite it's many, many flaws. I love the things I've made for it and with it. But it's getting to a point, for me, where the continued bile and spite from the rest of the cosplay and nerd community is really, really starting to get to me.
I used to just shrug it off and defend my fandom, but after four years it's getting exhausting. We thought it'd calm down after SU got big, like Hetalia actually got some semblance of respect from the community once Homestuck took over, but that didn't happen. You cosplay something else for once and the response is entirely different, and it's so strange not to have that looming shadow of being the fandom buttmonkey anymore.

Maybe I'm just getting older. I don't know. I need to interact with some Homestucks at a con again, make some impactful content, y'all.

I totally agree. I came from the Kingdom hearts fandom before homestuck, which once upon a time was a fandom buttmonkey too, but it was nothing compared to the shit I take for being homestuck still. It's been over 5 years in this fandom for me, and at Otakon this year I got mocked and fussed at for wearing homestuck by con roommates I'd just met.
Hell, even last year at Colossal there was a Wirt who shouted 'homestuck is shit' down at saccharinesylph from a balcony. Like, your fandom is literally for a 10 episode holiday special, where do you even get off...

DESU though the worst things that a Homestuck has done could be easily matched by other cosplayers or fandoms. Socially awkward nerds exist everywhere in the cosplay community, but big fandoms like Homestuck and Hetalia are easy targets because of the sheer number of people in them. I've been to over a dozen Homestuck meetups and have never witnessed anything that made me ashamed to be there.
