Otakuthon 2016

I'll be going for the first time. I'm not sure if I should wear lolita, other jfash or just normal clothes.

Do they usually post a schedule before pre-registration ends? I'll feel bad having paid for 3 days if all the stuff I want to go to ends up being on the same day, and vice versa.

I've never been before, but I might go this yr. The general consensus on this board is that it's a fun con and way better managed than AN. One of their guests that I'm kinda excited about seeing is Takeshi Obata who did the art for Hikaru no Go and Deathnote:

I also wanna check out Fanexpo this yr, only because Stan Lee is coming and this will be his last Canadian appearance due to his age/travel restrictions.

I'll be going for the 5th time now I think? I like Otakuthon the most out of the cons I've been, which to be fair isn't very many.

Meetup? Meetup.

I've been going for 5 years now. I think it's fun. It has really nice locations for cosplay photography. The convention center is close to Chinatown/downtown so food is near. The guests at Otakuthon are better than AN: this year, they have already announced two big Japanese mangaka. I feel like lolita has a bigger presence at AN though, and if you've seen AN's artist alley/dealer's room, you've pretty much seen Otakuthon's.

Otakuthon is loads of fun. Though the guest list doesn't seem as interesting as the few previous years, everything else should be as great as it usually is.

It's a good con for cosplay. The venue is good for pictures and stuff (especially if you venture a bit further out into the underground city or vieux port), and non-overpriced food is close by. There is a bit of Frenchie atmosphere that's unique to Quebec; if you don't speak French, no problem since most people in Montreal are bilingual and the main events are in both languages.

Last time I went to Otakuthon was in 2010. Wasn't it a tad cheaper before for the entry fees? I was usually only going for a day at most. I quite liked the first time at Otakuthon (2007?) but the year after I thought it was mediocre.

The buns are actually quite filling too and they go for less than two dollars each. I would definitely recommend them if you want something quick and nearby without having to sit in to eat (but some of those bun/pastry shops have a sit in section where they serve hot meals).

Sumo Ramen is meh-tier in terms of food and I could never really get into the atmosphere there (but that's just me). If for some reason you are craving ramen and don't mind a bit of a walk there is Ramen-ya/Kurobuta Isakaya on St Laurent Blvd.

Aside from that, you have the advantage of being centrally located, so if Chinese/Vietnamese food isn't your thing there are loads of other options nearby or within reasonable distance.

First time at Otakuthon

Compared to Anime North, this con was organized infinitely better. One location, multifloored, quite roomy, very professional.

However, is it just me or is there a lack of elaborate cosplays? As well, seemed like no one cosplayed outside. Is that normal?

I was very disappointed with the gaming station. What's the deal with stations setup for single player RPGs? I saw a SC2 tourney fail when most of the players didn't show up. It had a great space but no BYOC stations or games in general.

I also found the night events lacking as well, but maybe I'm missing something here as well.

Overall good experience but but kind of disappointed. I had my expectations really high for this one. Not sure I would drive to Montreal for it again when I have Anime North.

I have no idea. I'd like to know as well. I went with my boyfriend and seeing people in groups and having cosplay friends seemed like so much fun, I really long for it. Although, I don't have any friends to begin with and everyone seems like a normie in my town from what I've seen so far.
I want to do a group cosplay and be cute and be excited with others and travel to the con together. I guess I'll keep dreaming.

thats not me but I was hunting the umineko cosplays like crazy. I caught these two in the gaming room and it's just terrible lightning in there. I think their cosplays were pretty good actually. They are Sakomoto and The Witch of Origins. The picture doesn't do them justice at all

I also take pictures of these guys/girls with meh cosplays who hang out alone and look lost. I always feel bad for these shy people and I want them to have at least a picture of them out there

the dealer hall was terrible this year. I didn't see anything that caught my eye and it was packed as fuck. It was also really hot in there. There were also constantly people with huge cosplays walking around or idiots taking pictures in the middle of paths instead of moving to a corner

I don't know about any other anime con. I go to this one because it's really close to me and haven't really bothered to check other places

kurisu and okabe is a good cosplay for a couple and it's beginner friendly too. I highly recommend it so that you guys can get a feel for it. Some people don't realize how hard it can be to wear something really big/multiple layers for many hours especially with the temperature (which was especially hot this weekend)

i've never done group cosplays (only with my exGF and alone) but I imagine you can make it happen with social media. Ask in a group who else is cosplaying SuperAnime2017 and then plan something with them for example. It's also possible that if you cosplay something popular there will be photoshoots of that particular fandom and you can participate in those. For example, me and my ex cosplayed touhou the 2nd year and we ended up in a touhou photoshoot by total luck. It was alright

Staff here! This year we had significantly less night stuff, I noticed it too, buuut there's a reason.

We had very, very little to work with in terms of volunteers and people to have work nights, the game room was supposed to be open 24/7, but we had to close it at 3-4AM because about 6-7 people were running the entire thing.

Not enough panelists for the post-midnight panels, et cetera.

I know being a volunteer is a shit "do 20 hours then i'm free" job, but they're still important enough that without them, or enough of them, there's no con.

I rather not answer the issues you raised mainly because there are so many possible reasons from experience with volunteers to the volunteers themselves.
Although for the upgrading to staff part. I will recommend a volunteer that is ready to get their hands dirty because they want to help rather than the one who wants to become a staff
