I was at the photoshoot too! I'm actually impressed that a majority of the cosplays present ranged from passable to good. Lots of good Sans and Papyrus masks. Of the "humanized"-ish skelebros, only a couple of them were decent. The rest were trash. I'm looking at you, burglar Sans on the far left.

Here's one I took of the skelebros in their first formation. It was hot as hell and I felt bad for anyone wearing face/body paint.

Nightmare fuel is a little harsh. It's so rare to see Alphys done with a mask, and honestly I think this is one of the better ones to show up at the moment. Agreed that it could be improved by changing the eyes though.

Fursuits don't even bother me that much on the whole, but this Alphys really, really disturbs me. Maybe it's the realistic eyes and folds of skin around the eyes and cheeks partnered with the unrealistic too-closely-set eyes and big cartoony teeth...? Eeesh, it's not even poorly made, it's just really, really scary to look at. This is nothing against the construction, but I would want to be as far away from it as I could possibly be were I at that gathering.

The two Boxatons need to remake their body armor, glasses!Mettaton needs to get pink boots. Black boots would work if the body armour was also in black, for the monochrome battle sprite. Personal opinion, but I'm not a fan of the shiny metallic the fat Metta uses.

Hey. I've been trying to make the skull for a sans cosplay i'm doing but I'm having trouble getting a good base. I'm no expert, so I've just been trying to follow guides on the internet, but it turns out pumpkin pails are impossible to get in the summer. Any ideas for substitutes? I shitted this out, hope it makes sense.
To get the shape, you need to tape 2-3 balloons together before coating them all in paper maché. It won't be perfectly shaped like Sans, but it's a start.
Make sure to do several layers so it's sturdy when you pop the balloons.

I think this scares most people. Like, the clothes are simple enough, but how to tackle either a mascot head or prosthetics and facepaint (or whatever) would scare off first timers when there's such an easy alternative like Frisk/Chara.

Alphys was my first attempt at a mascot head and it sure gave me a newfound respect for fursuiters who manage to do the process well.

If you don't want to glue on teeth, I suggest using Black Tooth Enamel instead. You paint it on your teeth to make it look like there are spaces inbetween. You can easily find tutorials for it on YouTube etc.

Not the person you're replying to, but I think they're talking about "matching colours" like the tones of the greens used. The darker green you used in the sash is cool-toned (it looks bluer), but the green in the skirt is more warm-toned (it leans towards yellow). These colours clash really badly when they're put next to each other, leading to a feeling of discordance in the outfit. It's a subtle thing to get the hang of, but look at some colour wheels and palettes and get an eye for small changes in colour tone.

Oh now I get it! I couldn't use the same fabric I used for the sash for the skirt because is very transparent fabric. For the sash on the skirt you're right,but I couldn't find any other green tone for that,unfortunately where I live fabrics shop have a really bad furniture. Hope to change it in the future then! Alright, so paper mache and I'll assume nothing else yet. Just spraying that will definitely bring out every single imperfection the mask has, so doing enough layers and sanding carefully is an absolute must first.
I'd also go invest in a can of primer spray (automotive one that also is a filler is pretty good), that way you can see where your imperfections are hiding without having to use your final paint. And what that does, as the name implies, is prime your product for its final paint. Picture is a primer that comes in white. Generally they're grey, which you can also get, but I'd avoid black primers since your final coat will be white paint.
Basically:
>get thick layers of paper mache going
>sand carefully, google "sanding paper mache"
>when you think you're done, spray a coat of primer, check for bumps and nicks
>fix by either sanding or adding more mache
>add more primer
>check again and fix
>repeat the last two steps until your mask looks smooth as fuck
>then one final coat of primer
>and when it's dry, final spray paint

One more tip; if you do invest in primer, it would be wise to pick up a new can of white spray paint from the same brankd and line. That way you're pretty much sure they work together. Mixing brands can give bad paint reactions.
Of course, if you really don't care about having the smoothest mask, you can skip the primer altogether.

Smoothness and a base coat so the final paint applies better. In all fairness, since you say you have failures, try a test paint on one of the failed masks and see if you're happy with how it looks.
It's not a must buy, but it can be the difference between good and better, you know?

Now that I've been thinking about paper mache for a while, it might be necessary to add an extra step to my description above, and in your case, probably also necessary: adding a little barrier between the paper and the paint. How much time do you have every day to work on this?
I'm just worried that if you do just spray paint it might be too wet for the paper to hold together, and I wouldn't want you to have it fall apart at the last stages.

If you've got an art store near you, you could get a tube/pot of gesso. It's usually paintable with a brush, dries pretty quickly so you can get plenty of coats done in a day, and it would probably be enough of a barrier for spray paint.

Keep in mind that gesso and paint won't make your mask waterproof, so if it's raining outside, try to avoid having it out.

And I don't know if it would look better or not, but I'd try something else for the nose. Right now it just looks like a random pink nose; so either leave out the pink or add more animalistic detailing.

I used a bald part and had the ponytail on top, however to help conceal the edge and make myself look more "monstrous" I made gelatin scales to go on my forehead and the sides of my face. The morning of the con though, I didn't have anything to do for her laser-eye or whatever, so I did kind of a half-melted effect over that eye (like when she dies). Next time I cosplay her though, I'm completely omitting the gelatin and just doing the baldcap alone because it really doesn't look good lol. Aside from that and maybe remaking the spear, anything else I could improve on?

Your makeup looks a little too dark, but that could just be because the gelatin scales don't really color match at all. What brand are you using? If it's a water activated paint, I'd suggest diluting it a bit more. The armor itself looks really good to me (but then, I have no idea what goes into armor making and as such am no authority on the matter). I'd say the biggest improvement you could make is going for a slightly paler blue. I really like the teeth!

the gelatin scales look really strange to me, like they are peeling up in different places but they are only on one side of your face? i would vote to just ditch them all together, or figure out a way to tack them down better and have a scaled texture everywhere. also go for a lighter blue shade. the teeth look hella good. lastly, the ponytail extension looks very wiggy, i would vote to scissor up some layers in it and maybe even tease it.
other than that, the armor is pretty damn good. i especially love the gauntlets.

currently I'm sculpting everything out of plasticine clay, it's a wax base clay that doesn't harden so I can mold it however I want whenever I want. for all the steps I just basically am following tutorials for prosthetic making on YouTube, and what I've learned at film school so far. currently the prosthetics look very strange because I textured them with a large sponge that still had makeup deposited on it lmao... and now all I need to do is make a negative with plaster.

depends on how they go about it. I really don't like seeing plain black stripes on MTT arms; they don't offer any illusion of segments or plates or anything like that. It looks like striped sleeves. The whole reason those lines are there are to indicate a change in plates, joints, tube bits, whatever you wanna call it. When trying to do them on cloth, understated (but still present!) is better imho.
