Thread is about to be kill, so I'll bump. Just starting to do the stripes for Haru from Free!

I did a bit of searching and all the pre boughts were poor quality lycra, so I took an actual set of speedo jammers as the base and am in the process of painting.

Coloring in the pic is a bit messed up because of flash but it goes on semi glossy, much better than I had expected.

I've been slowly cleaning up my room in an effort to get it into a condition to be working on cosplay in - it's probably been actual years since I last cleaned this thoroughly. I'm reorganizing everything and going through all the papers I've accumulated throughout middle school/high school/college; it feels a lot easier throwing things away now that it's been years since I was in school. There's still a bit of clutter here and there but I'm hoping to completely clear off my floor by the weekend so I can start patterning my next costume during this coming week. It's exciting having an actual dedicated cosplay table/corner in my room now that I've moved things around!

Making my first ever gloves out of pleather = why.

Obvious fixes needed like the busted seams, filing down the nail beds to be more flush, and I want to make the gauze a little more grody. But it's a start. I'm lucky in that the finished product doesn't need to be neat or tidy so a lot of blunders can be obscured by blood/dirt/fraying.

Hey what if you did it in latex? I believe it could look pretty good and you could texture it as you want.

It's not something hard to mess with either, in my opinion it's even easier than sewing gloves (but I suck at making gloves so anything is easier for me)
>>
>>9071015
I'd be interested in trying that instead. Do you have any recommended tutorials?
>>
>>9071018
Not really but I can give you a quick run through of the process as I've learned to make it.

You'll need to make a solid copy of your arm, I use alginate (same as dentists use) and make a casing with gesso and bandages (two pieces, remove arm only when both are finished and secure, which you'll probably need a friend to help you with), then close it back again and fill it with gesso.
There's probably more ways to do it, but this way is fast and cheap!

Then use plastiline to sculpt the hands as you need them, to add texture a easy way us covering the area with plastic wrap and poking pieces of sandpaper over it.

To make the mold, do like you would a common two part silicone one but with gesso and fabric between layers. Careful not to make the piece get stuck.

Then just remove the plastiline, wash it with a hose outside if needed, dry, close it back up and fill it with latex .

12 hours should be enough to remove the leftover wet latex from inside. It will cure from the gesso walls to the inside, so the more time you leave it, the larger the walls of the latex piece will be. If you leave it for a short time it will end up really thin.

Wait for it to finish curing, spread talc inside so it doesn't stick to itself and carefully remove it from the mold, be patient when opening it because you might rip the latex.

Then cut off imperfections or cover holes with latex and a brush (there's a thicker type of late that helps with this part)

I'm sorry for not having any helpful links, I hope this can set you in a path or something

Just basic tulip fabric paint. It works pretty well, but you'll need more layers then like a basic cotton. This was metallic stretch, but I've used it for a normal just spandex/stretch and it worked fine.

Mask progress for Mononoke. First time working with papier mache and paperclay. Bottom right is after first full sanding. It still has (a bunch of) small imperfections, but I'm not sure whether to buckle down and try to sand them out with a finer grit, or try to fill them with something, like some slip made with paperclay or maybe just gesso. Suggestions?
>>
>>9075649
You should keep filling and sanding. It may look ok now, but when you paint it, all the flaws will become more obvious.
>>
>>9075731
Yeah, that's what I was worried about. Would putting a layer of gesso on and sanding it again help fill in the flaws, or should I use paperclay for filling?
>>
>>9075743
It depends on how uneven it is. For small imperfections, gesso can be good, but if you still have big divots, go back in with the original material. I know it's frustration how relative this all is, but that's how it is doing these sorts of projects.
>>
>>9075745
It's pretty smooth, and the imperfections are pretty tiny. I think I'll try gesso.

I really wish I could work faster ^^; Ive got a laundry list of mecha I want to make.

Your Gundam came out great! Some sizing is off but that's always difficult to get right and still be able to get around. For a first build its very impressive. The overall look is very sharp! The head skirt and shoulders especially!

I tried posting in the help thread but no one replied, can someone here maybe give some advice?

I'm cosplaying Venom Snake for a convention in a week, and got some spirit gum to attach my foam horn to my head.
It's the middle of the summer, and its gonna be hot as balls during the con.

Is there anything I can do to help the gum not be sweat off, or should I got for a different adhesive?

Chestpiece for Reshaped Ebony Armor from Skyrim.

I fucked up the first attempt because my duct tape form warped so all my measurements were off. I've never cosplayed before or worked with foam/Worbla, so every piece is a learning experience and a headache.
>>
>>9077289
I always wonder when people mention putting layers of wood glue on things--how do you apply it? Do you brush it on with a paintbrush or what? I would think the brushstrokes wouldn't be conducive to an even surface.
>>
>>9078559
Glue is a viscous liquid, anon. When you brush it on to something, it doesn't retain the brushstroke ridges like bondo or paste, it smoothes out. Especially if it's watered down in this case like it should be.

My plucked chicken looks more dragon-like now. The sleeves for the appendages are too big so I might take them in a tiny bit, and there's puckering for the scales everywhere, but at least progress is being made.

I'm working on Terry Bogard's King of Fighters 14 jacket. It's going pretty well so far.
Is there anything I can do to make the thread stand out more? It's like the texture of the demin absorbs the white thread sometimes and looks like nothing in some spots when it should be thick all over.
>>
>>9100683
use topstitching/embroidery thread or use that thicker thread for cross-stitching and do it by hand?

Natural fibers take dye the best, though there are dyes for some synthetics.

How heavy is it? I'd imagine a rope would dig into your shoulder/back/wherever and make a burn. Could you use fabric? Repurpose a backpack strap?

Rope is a nuisance to wash all the excess dye out of. Nylon webbing can be dyed with acid dye like silk (so RIT or Jacquard iDye + vinegar). Polyester webbing can be dyed with iDye Poly.

I've been convinced to become slayer even though I've never played GG, but i read up!

Step 1: grow back my beard and hair in 2 months.

Step 2: figure out where i can get this guy's costume

Step 3: find a bald cap and a wig and grab some beard and hair goop to model it in their style

Cost: probably $200
Time 2 months (for full hair growth) and 1 month (for outfit and trial and error regarding goop)

Not comfortable posting pic but i looked basically like pic related.

Additional steps: get a pipe, learn how to wear a monocle (and find a cheap one), get contacts since i wear glass's (needed a new pair anyway. maybe) and research any special personality quirks he has.

I know your a first timer but I recommend you make the 'wings' on the head as a separate piece and attach them later. You'll have a better time shaping and sanding the head into a uniform shape without them attached to it at this stage.

Thank you for the advice! I thought about doing it that way but I was worried about not being able to blend the clay together for a smooth effect since it would be to dry at that point. I went in with a water and a paintbrush though to get it as smooth as I possibly could to minimize the sanding needed (hopefully) Here's an update picture.
>>
>>9104574
I agree. You can sand it using a dremel if it is really an issue. Just takes patience. You have a bigger chance of the piece staying in tact as ell as one whole object instead of separate

Oh dear, anon, is there any way you can go back and clip/press those skirt petals better so they look more rounded? You should also consider re-making the collar (it's very messy) and generally making sure your thread tension is correct. There are a lot of thread tension errors leading to twisting at the skirt hem and puckering at the bodice seams. It's a good start but there are a lot of amateur errors.

Honestly I feel there is nothing at this point I can do with the petals and I don't have the time to completely remake them, I have them clipped on the inside to take in account of the curve and pressed , but no matter how hard I tried to keep the roundness it wasn't working 90% if the time, I don't understand what I can do at do this point for it... am I pressing the seams too tightly? Cutting it too small?

Ah the skirt hem, I was having a difficult time hemming the satin since it was a circle skirt, any recommendations on how to hem without this happening? I used horsehair braid for the first time too, so I'm not sure if it was poor application..

I don't use patterns and generally just wing it, thus the sad collar. I've never done something like that before so it honestly is something I will try to fix when I have more time.

I've been uploading my individual progress photos on my fb if you are interested, maybe you can see where I went wrong? /twistofadoration

I would like to get better, but I have no formal education or training, so I'm not sure how I manage to get as far as I do, haha. I wanted to enter this into a HCC for my first time, but now I'm too worried in my attempt..

eva foam. its cheap dollar store paint (decoart'scrafters acyrlic and americana multisurface satin). the gold is decoart metallic lustre in gold rush (basically rub n buff) and the other parts are a navy, black and metallic paint mixed together of the dollar store brands. the pink on the shin guards is americana crystal gloss enamel glass paint and the black for the shading and brown on the thighs is artists loft acrylic.

What kind of markings? War paint? Tattoos?

I cosplayed Jacuzzi from Baccano! and used copic markers for his face tattoo. It is in NO WAY the best thing to use, but they worked pretty well. Sometimes they don't layer well and you can see overlapped areas, but it's never been a huge problem. Unfortunately, they are kinda pricey. I've used prismacolor markers for other markings and had good results, but there's probably an actual marker made for this sort of stuff. I just don't know, sorry!

It'd take too long to learn to paint, but I can draw.

not that anon but heat sealing is when you use a heat gun and quickly heat up the surface of the foam.
it causes the cells (i.e. the pores) to stiffen up/close up a bit.

it wont make it completely smooth but it helps tremendously when trying to make it look smooth.

I've been working on this thing for far too fucking long. Least I have my process down for when I have to make a second one. Now I just gotta work on the armor too...

Actually, to add a question to that- I plan on using eva foam for the first time, and layering it with thin craft foam for detailing (Like I did with this one). I don't want to use hot glue this time around, but spray adhesive so I can get a good coverage. Can anyone recommend a good brand?

>>
>>9130892
Ive used several brands including loctite and elmers and a uline brand, loctite is the better imo. You want the kind marked 300 for best adhesion. Be careful though because it goes on thick, almost paste-like. Once it bonds its bonds nice and strong though. Craft foam wont come off short of you destroying it.

Accuracy, effort, human labor.. all valid reasons to 3D print. Also there's not a lot of room for batteries/lights/wiring/fan/etc inside OTS parts. I can shell my models and print everything hollow this way, in transparent plastic, to make lighting it up much easier.

Nothing within .050" or so of standard sizes. ALso, seaming multiple pieces together would create a lot of weak spots.
Everything printed is getting assembled(epoxied) over a 1/2" OD stainless steel tube, so I would need spacers if the prints weren't designed to fit that. I mean, I could probably have lathed the main tank from some wood, but there's some textures and circumscribed detail lines in it and the handle, midsection that mean I'd have to chuck up parts to groove them- don't have the tooling for that.

Also, I recently started using some high build catalyzed primer that murders the striae on prints in one pass and buffs to a pretty hard finish, as smooth as you have elbow grease to sand down to.

Also, filament is cheap. Skilled labor and free time are not..
And I'll be making at least two. Gotta automate.

Oh, and the design will be pretty easy for others to print and assemble now, too. So others benefit.
>>
>>9120321
you can also use an iron, I only do this when making "leather" pieces though as it gives a slightly different texture.

Bumpin' since it was at the bottom of the list!!!

This hat's ALMOST finished, gonna make some more 3D parts for the big teeth and run some wire in the brim for a more stable shape.
>>
>>9134298
Yes, definitely take in the waist and perhaps redo the belt with a stencil and fabric paint so that it lies more naturally on your hips. The proportion of the necklace and halter top is also off. Try looking for a sewing pattern like this (http://www.lekala.co/catalog/women/tops/pattern/5624) or copy a similar top from your wardrobe if you have one. To add more dimension to her accessories, especially the necklace, try painting in shadows with a fine brush. If not pressed for time, I would consider redoing the dress in soft jersey--any fabric that clings more to the body. The foundation of the costume is a maxi dress with a halter neckline (pic related).

I hope this helps! I don't think I've ever seen SoS cosplay posted here before!

What method of pleating did you do to get that skirt to flare out so nicely?
Did you add pleats to a circle skirt cut ?

Yep! I was originally going to gather it so I sewed along the top with a very long and even stitch, which then allowed me to arrange the large gathers into pleats on the dress form.

So, this isn't actually as time consuming as I'd have thought.

So far I've learned that buying miniature bolt cutters was the best idea ever, and that I probably should have gotten slightly higher gauge wire. The only real pain is making the coils, the rest is kind of cathartic, but I'm only like 150 links in so far, and I need 4-500 for the first piece to test out how my plan looks.
>>
my whole life is a work in progress, perhaps all of existence is a work in progress

perhaps death is truly the only rest
>>
>>9144146
What are your plans for this? How long does it take?
>>
>>9144146
If you using alum then yeah your day is pretty easy. Looking good though, If your doing a shirt or coif it would not be out of the oridinary to have a lot of the mail be different sizes depending on what part of the body its on. So dont be afraid to get some thicker wire and use it in the same project.
>>
>>9144408
It's 11 gauge galvanized steel, it's slightly beefier than your average chain link fence wire, pretty tough stuff, really heavy. I definitely don't want to go any thicker, "higher gauge" = thinner wire. This makes an unrealistically course pattern, but it reads really well at a distance which is good. Unfortunately, I shot it with a bow for fun last night, and it went straight through, just bent one of the rings open enough to pass through.

>>9144357
Considering Geralt from The Witcher. I'm going to make one of the shoulder pads, see how it turns out and then go from there. Because the pattern is so large it speeds things up a bit, a smaller pattern has exponentially more rings, but the small rings are probably a little easier to work with. Doing things in stages seems to help, like:
>roll all the coils (7m each, ~30 rings)
>cut all the rings, (~2m/coil)
>close/open all the rings (~6m/coil)
>actually make the links (~6m/coil)

So, ~19m total for every 30 rings I'd estimate? I expect to need at most ~3500 rings, which comes out to ~37h. With this size ring it's about 5-6 rings/sq-in.

The truest thing I have read in 8 years of /cgl/.

I'm going to try indigo dyeing this silk brocade today, in the interest of historically-authentic sword boy trash. None of the blue acid dyes looked quite right. Synthrapol for scouring, caustic soda to raise the pH, henna to reduce the O2 out of the dyebath. Have to pick up some flavorless gelatin as a final additive, which will hopefully keep the silk from losing its shine in the alkali.
>>
>>9144464

Well real chain mail links were held close by pins. So it was harder for them to be broken up by arrows.

Also didnt bodkin arrows pretty much go trough chain anyway? And the layers underneath are what also provided much needed protection.

Pads for an UDON Taskmaster cosplay. I still need to adds straps in the back. Whats the best way to do this?
>>
>>9147887
You probably should have heat-formed the foam rather than relying on strap tension to get it to curve around your limbs, it's less stress on the material. Do you have access to a heat gun, or can you heat them like 12" above a low-heat stove burner?
As for attaching straps, http://www.wmarmory.com/?p=1380
>>
>>9148656
I don't think I have a heat gun, and at home I have an electric range.I bound it up with twine like a baseball glove and it worked for a little while, but it seems to have reverted to its original curvature

Thanks for the tutorial! I'm new to working with foam so any little bit helps.

hopefully youre still around since this post was 3 days ago.

what kind of 3D printer do you have? been thinking of picking one up to handle some prop work.
I wouldnt use it to completely take over everything but it seems usefull when trying to create some intricate parts.

of course this question is open to anyone else who uses a 3D printer.

These were printed mostly on a maker select i3(280-300us), as well as a few parts on a lulzbot mini(1100?).

The work never goes away with 3D printers, it can just shift to either making your shapes more accurate to begin with in 3D modeling programs, or making them smoother in the finishing process.

In Fallout T60 power armor news, we have a bunch of stuff molded completely or under rubber, some parts pulled, only a couple masters for me to do final sanding tomorrow.. It goes. The deadline approaches.
