Hey there /cgl/. This is my first cosplay ever, and I decided to do Naked Snake from MGS3.

Personally I think it looks okay at the moment, but I am working on the harness and switchbox at the moment and I think it'll look a lot better than it does currently. I am considering on doing a bit of a cut to try to lose some weight, but I'm not sure.

Any advice or tips on how to improve it? How about tips for cosplaying in general? I'm heading to AnimeMidwest as my first con as well.

Look up lines to say, poses to hold. Expect to get quite a few pictures because of how much skin you're showing. Otherwise just look at a lot of reference photos to improve your overall images, if you can't make something, see if you can buy it. There's some really good army surplus stores where you can buy things used and slightly worn, if that's a look you're going for.

Does my airsoft gear look close enough to pass for Naked Snake/MSF soldier? I know I don't have the deltoid protectors, I'm working on that.

I'm doing Venom Snake in a few weeks at a convention in Kansas, I still need his belt and the glue for the horns...

I went to AMKE as MGS1 SNake and Huey, going to bring those and my MGS3 Soldier from AMKE 2013 to Midwest. Should be hanging out with twins that are doing Naked and Venom Snake.

But as far as improvements go, I think you should definitely style your hair more, or look into getting a wig to give you the right length/style. With the bandana the wig would look very natural, since it would hide where the hairline would be. Speaking of, it may just be the lighting in the photo, but I feel like your bandana is too bright/not the correct color. Something that's a more subdued gray would work well; that just feels like it's standing out to me a little too much.

Okay, round 2 of my upcoming Naked Snake Cosplay. My harness isn't perfect, and I can't bring weapons so I decided to go for something a bit more comical (hence the fork and calorie mate). I have a couple other props, but this essentially is my entire (first full) costume.

It's really annoying because it's such a small detail and it can take an outfit from "lol I'm just doing this 4 halloween" to an actual good cosplay.

Not all wigs look that great. Especially for characters in MGS (mullets for daysssss) they just look terrible to me when I see people use them. If it were an anime character with spiky multi colored hair I'd understand, but MGS tries to be lifelike in a lot of ways (in terms of graphical design, mind you) and I personally feel natural hair looks better; especially if your hair is somewhat comparable to the real thing. I get what you're saying though and you're entitled to your opinion, but I feel that not in all cases does refusing to wear a wig make someone's cosplay "shit".

Just because it's not an anime, or that the characters have normal:ish hair doesn't mean going wig-less is gonna look better.

Snake may be intended to have normal hair, but his hair is still thicker and more "perfect" than normal hair is.

All the top pics in posted pictures are wigs, and they don't look fake. The look much closer to Snakes actual hair than the bottom ones, the ones were people are wig-less

Also, almost none of the people going with their natural hair actually has the same shade/texture/style as Snake.

Also, besides just looking better, wigs are easier to style than normal hair (although, nobody seems to bother to even style their hair...), look better in pictures, and if you're keeping the cosplay for years to come, you don't have to cut/dye/style your hair like that everytime you're wearing the cosplay.

I didn't say this is always the case, but in most cases, like I said before, adding a wig just elevates the quality of the entire cosplay (unless you buy a really shitty wig of course)

In turn, I can totally understand not wanting to go through the hassle of wigs. I just get a bit sad because to me, it really adds a lot to the cosplay

Yeah, that pic was from the mid-afternoon, so they were pretty quiet. They were super cute though, and would nod and smile whenever I asked them questions ("Did you guys have fun today?" "Did you like the grown ups in pretty costumes?" etc)

Kid cosplays are awesome, but I always feel bad when they're obviously out of energy (and no real place for them to rest at a con)

The Metal Gear franchise has very down to earth, non-animu hair for some of the characters, so a wig is not always necessary and would even look somewhat out of place at times.

There are times when it's called for though, say a character with long hair, or something like Meryl or Phantom Pain Ocelot.

Getting thin is relatively easy, if you're gonna go all out in terms extreme cuts. Gaining muscle like Big Boss takes months if not years, I never dreamed a year ago that I would actually be cosplaying anyways, and you can't really be efficiently doing either at the same time.
Making payments is easy, physical dedication is hard work and takes lots of willpower.

In that case, safety pins will probably be your best bet for any additional details (Epaulettes, medals, ribbons, etc.) plus a Same Browne belt (the one that goes around the waist and then diagonally across your shoulder) in order to fill things out. I don't know about you. But the fact that she is wearing a bra with peace signs on it really hammers home the "Angel of Peace" aspect. And honestly, it is so on the nose that it runs pretty in line with her naive personality and only reinforces her role in the whole Peace Walker mission.

That's about all I can really give without repeating any of the cosplayers I've already posted. MGS2 Raiden isn't as common as Naked Snake or Quiet or something. It's probably because making the Skull Suit relies most heavily on fabricating something from scratch instead of mostly modifying existing pieces and putting the right ones together. Anyway, it still surprises me that out of all the good MGS2 Raidens I've seen, Omi's (pic related) is actually the worst...
