There is always the obvious solution: Git Gud. Teach him humility.
>>
>>9046140
Legit skill.
That's my plan. We practice here once or twice a week but for some reason I can't seem to improve...
If you have any tips/videos on how to git gud, that's blessed.
>>
Should I get them for $40? I think they look really neat, like something a fantasy rogue would wear in the midst of sneaking, backstabbing, and all other manner of roguish activities.
>>
>>9046233
>We practice here once or twice a week but for some reason I can't seem to improve

Because that's maintenance levels of practice. You'll be able to maintain your efforts/improve very slowly, but nothing big.
>>

>>
>>9046352

>>
>>9046376
People who do real sports, that is, literally any competitive athlete out there. 5/6 days a week isn't uncommon at all.
>>
I'm a bit conscious about inuring my hands, but I prefer the early medieval european look. Were there scale or lamellar gauntlets, or would I have to make do with padded cloth, mail and/or leather? Google's not giving me many results that aren't fantasy shit.
>>
>>9045989
no. They didn't wear undersized clothes. If they wore tight clothes its because that was the style, not because they bought the wrong size.

>>
>>9046382
I'm sorry to say that in the Early Medieval period, any sort of armoured glove is fantasy.

The closest I can think of would be mailled mittens that appear in the last third of the 12thC, but these are attached to the sleeves of the hauberk as opposed to seperate gloves.

The standard re-enactor practice is to get some sturdy and unobtrusive leather gloves and oil them brown which balances protection without compromising historical accuracy too much.

We just hide them for photo shoots and be honest if asked by the public.

>My videos and tips are useless as you still havent stated your system, and my tips and techs are likely to get you kicked out of most larps.

You have my curiosity. Dickstabs?
>>
>>9046681
it's more likely that a lot of US systems is lightest touch and that has it's own problems.
HEMA techniques are rarely good against ultralights if you aren't allowed to stab or apply force on the other guy and it's expected that weapons are act like lightsabers
>>
>>9046406
>Don't ever say "git gud."

>>
>>9046618
System is HP based. You can hit anything other than palms, feet, groin, neck and head. All hits do 1 damage. Stabbing and 'cutting' is both allowed. Our rougher systems allow grabbing weapons' shaft and the wrist of the one who uses the weapon.
It's always interesting to know more if you have any techniques even if they don't work to my system
>>
>>9046681
Nothing so inelegant. I am a huge fan of shield and weapon manipulation, IE, advancing and pressing to where they either are so horribly out of stance that they cannot recover or generate force, or even have their own weapon/shield pinned against themselves. Few people expect to have the haft of their weapon pressed against their chest, or some one kick the top of their shield into their face.

Another excellent technique is interposing: positioning a weapon, haft or shield edge so that when the enemy throws a blow, not only does the shot get intercepted, but they literally hit their own limb against the interposing object. I love when people try to throw a deep wrap shot on me, because the edge of my shield will be waiting for them to mash the inside of their elbow into at full force.

>>9046723
>System is HP based. You can hit anything other than palms, feet, groin, neck and head. All hits do 1 damage
I assume its touch then, and it doesn't matter where it lands. Problem is, your "best fighter" isn't a good fighter, he's just really good at your system. Anything other than "hit him faster than he hits you" is useless in HP based systems.

get a polearm and always keep your distance.
Or learn to use a triangle step properly, under pressure.
Basically there isn't any magic technique to this, you just have to train to do stuff quickly and accurately.
We can tell you any kind of technique but if you can't pull it off then it doesn't worth shit
>>
>>9046728
What does your system work like?
And it isn't lightest touch. I mean, you don't throw full swings or something, but you do have to put some force behind the strike.
And he can defend, dodge, strike etc rather well, so I'm not sure he can only hit fast
>>
>>9046733

>>9046737
Angles are everything. Never enter engagement squared up.

>>9046756
>What does your system work like?

>Darkon/O.R.C.S.
Positive force, location based targeting, weapon type based damage/bypass. No head shots.

>Lost Stories and Dark Tales
With intent strikes, location based targeting, weapon type based damage/bypass. Headshots allowed

>SCA armoured baton combat
Full force "telling blow", IE, if it hurts with a stick, a real weapon would have ended you based on the honor system. Minor location and weapon typing. Head is a primary target.

>ACL/HMCI etc
Full force with goal of submission through injury, knock down or knockout using blunt steel weapons. No thrusts due to safety. Everything is a target.

>WMA/HEMA/Historic fencing
No real "scoring" system. Martial art focus of theory and practice. Mostly with intent, full targeting honor system.

>And it isn't lightest touch. I mean, you don't throw full swings or something, but you do have to put some force behind the strike.
Positive force.

>And he can defend, dodge, strike etc rather well, so I'm not sure he can only hit fast
He's not a better fighter, he's just more physically active based on game parameters.
>>
>>9046789
SCA/ACL sounds like fun. Not sure we have anything like that around. How do you knockout/injure a person in armour? (Unless you're unarmoured and using steel weapons...?)

Also, to answer your other question, there is no inherent risk to a numbers game which in the end, is almost always in the favor of those with the biggest. Even foam fight games like Dag have an inherent method of artificial risk: there are no numbers to hid behind if your skill or luck runs out. You get hit, you're "dead"

In my experience, effectiveness in a system with HP and effect calls (I assume you have those too, since American larps with HP almost always do) boils down to roughly the following:
25% physical fitness
25% combat skill (actually knowing how to use a weapon, footwork, techniques)
50% system mastery (putting points in the right places, knowing what's OP in your system, knowing when to use what kinds of skills)

The numbers shift depending on the specifics. A game with a ton of effect calls, especially easy access to multiple dodges/parries/whatever specific term they use, skews it away from fitness and combat skill and further toward system mastery, for example. At any rate, in the majority of cases, the most reliable way to become more effective in such a system will be to practice with experienced players and look at the skill list to figure out which ones will be most useful, and then practice with them a lot to you become accustomed to using them.
>>
>>9046985
Personally, I set skill and fitness much higher.
System mastery is really important, and can make you tough to beat, but I've fought high level players and won by fitness and skill alone. Doesn't matter how much they swing for if they can't hit.
That being said, some systems invalidate this. Anything with heavy disarms or "weapon breaks" can be tricky to win. I'm decent at boffer fighting and that carries well. If you want to cheese it up, shield and spear is the way to go.
>>
>>9046233

I'm not sure how much experience you have with weapon fighting, but two tips I always give to beginners are.

A) Don't strangle the weapon, a lose grip gives more speed to your quick, wrist based strikes and will ensure you don't tire out too fast.

B) Don't expect the first strike to land, always throw credible hits, but be planning your follow up straight away.
First get them to move their sword, you want them reacting to you not vice versa, then get their sword away from where you intend to strike, if they often leave their elbow extended after a parry, force them to parry as far away from that elbow as possible so they'll have a long way to travel to stop you, then strike. If you miss, then get them to open that avenue up again or find a better one.

Remember, no one ever won a sword fight by blocking, at one point or another you have to take the initiative if you want to win.
>>
>>9046994
That's why I say the numbers shift based on the details, yeah. My personal game? I'd say it's closer to even all around, since it very much does allow a more skilled fighter to stand up to someone higher-leveled if they have the physical ability and training to actually pull it off.

This is just what I feel most US games sit at, since they tend to go for a more tabletop-y approach that uses abstractions to limit the amount of real-world capability you can use in game.
>>
>>9046998
>but two tips I always give to beginners are.
the first thing I like to give to beginners is aim at the other guy, not at his weapon.
I mean if we talk about REALLY beginners.

Battle of the Nations is only one of many HMB/ACL events. They also do counted blow duels.

The SCA does all sorts of various historic recreation, but is known for the baton combat and rapier fencing. Israel seems to be covered under the big catch-all that is the Drachenwald group. Try hitting them up on facebook and asking.

Otherwise, I did find a few pics of a small SCA group in Jerusalem who seem to be active in rapier fencing. https://www.techhouse.org/~dj/sca.html

I made my little brother good at larp sword fighting by going all out on him for a whole summer (had no job so I just went out to him at the family cottage for 6 weeks). It made him quite decent on defense.

had to train far too many people who barely know which part of the sword to grab. You have to teach them the REALLY basics, how to hold it, how to stand, how to step, which part of it should strike the other guy. These seem to be funny or way to basic but honestly, I don't expect anyone to know it if they never did any swordfighting, or did it only at larps
>>
>>9048626
Confirmed. Met a Jerusalmic friend today who said he actually knew one of the former group members.

This is the entry for the Stealth skill. It fucking hurts to read.

"You can vanish into the shadows.
Cross your arms over your head and hold
your special Stealth kerchief to indicate that
you are hidden. You can only vanish while
you are up against an object at least as large
as you (such as a boulder, large tree, or a
wall) and in shadow or complete darkness.
You cannot vanish while anyone is watching
you; anyone who sees you attempt to use
stealth may call out “I see you” if they see
you vanish, and your attempt then fails. You
do not need to use any sort of verbal
indicator for Stealth skill; in fact, it’s
recommended that you don’t (so as to avoid
people calling “I see you” when they hear
your Stealth call, even if they can’t see you).
While hidden, you cannot speak or hold
anything in your hands. You may only move
at a slow walk, and you must remain next to
cover. You must keep your arms crossed
over your head and your Stealth kerchief in
hand. A character with Sharp Sense: Sight is
aware that someone is present, but cannot
pinpoint your location or description. A
character with the Sharp Sense: Sight
advantage and the Search skill can find you
after scrutinizing the area for ten seconds."

I've done some just archery tag with 50-60 pound draw bows. Its not an issue at range. However, you can definitely hurt people if you get decently close. I'm talking anything short of about 50 meters. On a full draw can hurt. especially if you hit any sensitive area(groin, face, etc)

Also If I would have this skill I would also bring a towershield or door with me which is as big as me. For stealth reasons. So if someone tries to chase me I can instantly vanish.
Because it looks like it doesn't have any casting time, or even cooldown
>>
>>9049668
I know right? God forbid you ask people to actually do the thing they want to do in-game. My game tried out a mission last event with legit stealth elements, it was fucking amazing. If we had tried to do the same thing with these rules, there would have been no tension whatsoever. We may as well have sat down around a table with a GM and asked "Okay, does one of these NPCs have Heightened Sense: Sight? Alright, then we're fucked/alright, then we don't even need to exert an effort."

I really hope someday more American larp runners come around to the fact that rules-light is so much more immersive.

Sort of a silly question, but how realistic is it to actually sneak and use stealth at LARPs? I mean, I did try it once, but that time was in a pretty much millitant game so although fun, it was rather pointless.
>>
>>9049944
There were times when I nearly caused a heart attack to someone while sneaked up on him.
There was an occassion when I sneaked up on a camp and someone who went to piss in the woods nearly pissed on me because he couldn't see me.
There was one time one I killed four dudes one after another when they walked down a path at night, cutting there throats.
Then there was the priceless moment when someone thought he is very good at ambushes by finding a great spot and sit down there to wait his victims. It was too bad that I was already set up camp there and he literally sit right next to me...

I could go on but the tl;dr version is that sneaking is very much viable on a normal larp, although most of the time you need night game for that

crossbow is very different from a bow with poundage. Area and length translate into force, the increase in length of a bow makes the lower pound pull hit harder.

I've got quite a few friends with latex allergies, and they still engage in combat. The length of time the latex is on the skin is so minimal, they never have a problem.
Is the padding an issue because US larps have to be "full contact, no pulled blows" bullshit? A properly pulled blow will still hit with force and wont hurt that much.

Not Gropey's period, but there are tons of men's dressing guides from the seventeenth through twentieth centuries that suggest wearing slightly undersized clothes for formal events as it is slimming and/or creates the image of being well fed. Its a pretty constant fashion trope throughout history.

Id like too see your documentation on that. Skin tight hosen and lacing is fine, they were meant to be worn that way. The argument is that people purposefully wore clothes sizes too small for them, rather than having them made"tight" to fit them. Like skinny jeans, the fit is different but you wear the correct size. second guy from the right. I would ban him from wearing chainmail, forever. that arm thing looks very shit, and really see-through too. if he would attach it to his arm properly and maybe give a few layers of textile backing it could look like something that isn't totally garbage.
Pic isn't too big, so I can't see it properly but looks like the other parts of his chainmail are dubious at best too.
Also most of the them obviously wearing a T-shirt. If they would change it a long sleeved shirt, may or may not tied at the upper arm, or just folded back/whatever, it could greatly improve the look Linen shirts also works better in hot weather than cotton T-shirts.
Chainmail girl would also need to check her chainmail privileges and maybe someone should revoke it. The problem isn't that it's a chanmail bikini, but that it looks shit. There is a saying in hungary "it looks on him like pants on a cow" Totally doesn't fit her.
Middle guys leg whatevers (rocker apparatus?) looks dubious too.

Alright, autism levels are getting too high so let's get a few things straight.

There is a fuckhuge misscommunication here.
First of all, asshole anon asked about guides about the "gentlemanly dressing guides" that implies the undersized cloths were used willingly. but he said only "guides" in a reply to gropey post where he also mentioned a fuckton of things, among other things fighting manuals

Gropey replied to this that FIGHTING MANUALS can be found everywhere

Then another anon started asking about fighting manuals.

Then all of you retards stopped reading and changed into write only mode, and the whole thing got out of hand.

First of all, no matter how big of an asshole any anon or namefag or tripfag is, if someone states someone and some asshole ask for proof then he is right to do it. The guy who states anything has the burden of proof. Yes, you have to prove your point, big fucking surprise, doesn't matter if you are just a random retard or Saint Tobias himself.
You can off course brush it away as a retarded question, but in this case it was a legit one on the undersized clotihng thing AND even on the fighting manuals it would be a legit question.

HOWEVER everyone has a right to be as much a dick as he wants, anons, namefags and tripfags all included. No surprise there either. BUT just because you are "famous" you don't get a free pass at anything, especially not at being a dick, so all of the autists should stop pretending otherwise. Gropey was mistaken in the past, I was mistaken in the past every one of you was mistaken in some point at the past. and will be in the future.

So instead of an endless circlejerk you guys either make it into more interesting with better shittrowing or you should start posting period paintings and find sources to prove either side's point, pro or con.
Because as far as I'm concerned none of you idiots know shit about this, so it would be time to change that.
>>
>>9055014

you can look for inspiration everywhere. It's hard to give you pointers because if you don't know where you want to go with this we will just start talking about what WE like. So you have to decide that.
But you can look at larp photos too, or reenactors, or old paintings, etc. Or just fantasy art.
About hat, I don't know, maybe a berret, but it would really depend on the whole setup and what you want to go for.

It's worth checking Facebook to see if there's any larp pages within your area, and posting what you have for sale on there.
If your in the UK, there's the UK LRP Kit lage where people sell their shit.
Or you know, eBay.

the MTA doesn't mention undersized cloths for italian fashion as far as I know. (but I never read all of it so feel free to prove me wrong)
It doesn't really mention various fashions that much either. It's mostly a how to sew stuff, focused more on the how instead on the why and what.

>>
I'd like to make a Deep-One costume and I'm wondering about how to craft the head.
The only latex-on-to-foam tutorials I can find are for swords.
Am I right in thinking it's the same deal with making creature masks? Carve the features out of the foam then just paint on/dip latex on to it several times until a good 'skin' is created?
>>
>>9059770
Yep, that would be the way to make a latex on foam mask. It's a fairly cheap construction method, but it probably wont have a very good looking surface finish.

Don't try and tip something that large though, you'll just make a mess. Sponge the latex on instead of brushing if you don't want streaks.

Gropey is who you need to ask for this. I asked the same question for cosplay and his advice for body paint is to not use it. Use an opaque body stocking instead if you're going to be running around a sweating. Less likely to stain your costume or someone elses and easier and comfier to wear.

Rather than going full face makeup, it might be worth getting a full head mask, then using makeup to cover any uncovered spots.

I need advice on getting a gambeson. My kit I'm building towards is 14th century, and I'm unsure of what to get for a gambeson. An SCA friend said I should get a custom one made by one of the ladies in the area, but I was wondering how good kult of athena gambesons are for their price?

A custom one will be always better. Little more pricey but usually they have a better cost/quality ratio. Then again that is if the maker knows what he or she is doing

>>
>>9066257
Damn, thats a dick move. Wood can be quite fucking expensive in those quantities. Are you able to rebuild it?
>>
>>9066396
We used up about 900€ of our guild's funds, which was pretty much all we had left in it, and then the members who could then helped out with transportation costs and completion costs.

Some of the wood is completely broken and will have to be replaced, so if we are to fix this we will have to completely rely on member donations.

Money issues aside, the real problem lies in the fact that the building is not safe. We can scramble together time and money from everyone, but we cant do it a 2nd time and absolutely not a 3rd time.

>>
>>9066257
Well, that's sucks.
But look on the bright side: you have a terrain where you are actually allowed to build stuff.

Around here we doesn't have that yet. We usually play in the forest and even though one of the forest inspectors for one of the terrains is a player we are still not allowed to build anything big or serious.

Then again it's in a kind of remote, not interesting place so we rarely have anyone there apart from us, occasional dirtbikers who destroy stuff, or same with quad drivers.
And of course regular hunters and poachers.
And sometimes people throw there dead chicken and various kind of trash.

But apart from that it's a really nice place. We found out recently that another group comes there kind of frequently, a group of goa-trance-hippies or whatever. They go there listen to music, drink a little, make food around the campfire, etc.
To our biggest surprise they not just doesn't do any damage, they actually BUILT a few stuff, like chairs and similar things.

I've started in the SCA, non-authortized yet, and I have to say

I HATE FUCKING SWORD AND BOARD RATTAN

Having a background in rapier fencing, these rattan weapons are fucking SHIT. They're heavy as all fuck, have absolutely zero balance, wind you if you fight in the heat extremely fast, and have zero finesse to their swings. These clubs are about as good analogues for a sword as smoothbore musket is for a Springfield.

Advice from the locals is that I use sword and board so I can get authorized by the martial easily, but frankly I fucking hate these things and can't swing them well at all. They're not swords, they're baseball bats.

How hard would it be to get authorized using a rattan longsword? I figure it's got to have better control because you can use two hands on it. Also, why the fuck doesn't the SCA just use blunted steel weapons for heavy fighting? Just increase the armor standards, this isn't supposed to be a cheap sport anyway, and blunted steel swords >>>>> rattan beat stick.
