Old thread >>9026401 was on autosage

I'm on my phone so super short post.

What are you doing?
How has your cosplay been holding up?
Have fun?
>>
>>9029601
Bout to head over late for the last night my dudes. I hope I can meet at least one person
>>
This con was a total disappointment for me. Aside from the hotel security going full gestapo, the con itself was kinda a bust. Absolutely no good events or panels and the exhibit hall was mediocre at best. Artist Alley seemed alright, but that's not really my thing.

We had a good party going, but only an hour and a half or so into it we got a first and final warning from the hotel. We checked with all our neighbors beforehand and everyone was cool with us throwing the party, so whoever complained wasn't even in the surrounding rooms. The way the hotel handled everything really killed my vibe and I just drove all the way back to SoCal yesterday evening, wasn't worth it staying any longer in San Jose.

Still looking forward to AX, ACC, and ALA. Don't think we'll be going back up to Fanime any time soon tho, this con was a disaster. The only redeeming quality was being able to hang out and drink with some cool people despite the hotel's best efforts to stop any fun from happening.
>>
Come drink legally at the fairmont lobby

>>9029627
Pretty much this dude,
Though I'm having o have met you and the crew.
ALA sounds less fascist, hopefully we can all rekindle the flame then. Never been to any SoCal cons except AX, maybe anime California.
So incredibly disappointed with fanime.
>>
>>9029672
I'll go down right now if you are serious.
>>
>>9029674

Going to try and head to AX this year wasn't all that great save for a few good panels and anime. Hellsing was great. Despite being abridged. Didnt cosplay but im planning now. Last year was the shit but time to plan and look forward
>>
>>9029627
I'll miss you 9ball senpai.

The Fairmont was such shit I guess. I've been coming to Fanime for a while and this seemed like the worst one. Oh well, I'll drink some beers or something.

what do you look like?
>>
>>9029722
Jojo panel was great! Still can't believe I won the pose off lol
>>
>>9029627
Yep this entirely. If you can find a chill hotel room party that doesn't get shut down by hotel security. I did, and it was the highlight of the con for me. That said, it was only because I hung out with people from last year I knew. The party after the meetup was a bit crazy and not the ideal vibe, imo.

I'll go to Fanime next year but only because I live so close to it, but god damn I'm not buying a weekend pass next year. You can do everything you want to in a single day.
>>
>>9029728
Look at a corner with laptop

Dear fanime

Get this shit show of a martial arts time waste of the stage and get on with the fucking masquarade. You wasted our time with your slow as judges and bullshit meetings already. Stop wasting more of it trying to be edgy fucks with a shit light tech flashing lights at random for no reason and people stumbling all over the stage pretending they know martial arts.

>>
Does anyone else feel like they're done? Like, with this Fanime specifically? Normally around this point, I'm getting melancholy that the weekend is almost over. I feel no such negative emotion right now. It's hard to crash if there isn't a high, and I never got much of one this year, be that because of lack of good times as a whole, or that this is year 11 for me and the con has become a been-there, done-that situation. I dunno, the magic was lost this year, I suppose
>>
>>9030215

>>
>>9030390

>>
>>9030240
Yes, I feel this way too.
In fact, after so many years, the aspects that made the con fun have actually deteriorated. Remember that year fanime got duel jewel and blood for the concert? That will never happen again. Or when the masquerade wasn't a complete joke? or how artist alley and the dealers hall had anime wares, and not every "nerd fandom" under the sun? like when AMVs were a huge fucking deal? And to top it all off, the con shutdown any and all good parties because "they worked so hard to free up hotel space only to be betrayed"
I heard the word "betrayed" used.
Fuck it dude, it's over.
New con goers will come and won't even know how good it used to be. They'll spend and pre occupy themselves with activities they could have done at home.
An I don't even think they mind, is the worst thing. They don't are about guests, or bands, or any kind of actual substance the con is responsible for.
The magic is indeed lost when all my shit's already packed and I'm debating taking off, right now,in the wee hours of the morning.
It's really depressing.
>>
>NorCal
>good cons
>>
Anyone know the Manyvids accounts of the girls who set up the pegging bdsm party two days ago?
>>
>>9030409
>artist alley and the dealers hall had anime wares, and not every "nerd fandom" under the sun?
This part offends me more than anything. While there's still a bunch of figs and whatnot to be found the vast majority of merch is all the most mainstream nonsense available. There used to be a vendor that would bring a massive amount of dvds/bds and you could find all manner of hard to find stuff. Not this year it seems.

Now the con is all about looking like you're into "nerd stuff" as opposed to actually being into it and wanting to enjoy it with others.

I dunno. Maybe I'm a jaded elitist or something.
>>
>>9030426
Honestly vendors who bring stuff like that loose a market thanks to the internet.

Back way in the day when I first started going to cons I'd scour the manga and dvd booths looking for my favorite series since that shit was near impossible to find online, the only place you COULD get it was generally over priced at cons.

Theres no need for a lot of that merch at cons any more. I dont think i've bought a DVD or figurine at a con in years when I can find them for better prices online or even pre order figures I like. Being an anime fan is a lot easier than it ever has been. I'll miss the certain atmosphere that came with early anime cons but I'm not going to shun the new one. I'd rather adapt and still have a good time than mope around because things arent like the 'good old days'

I'm the opposite. I took a lot of hall photos but no shoots. I tried attempting a different way of asking this year because i hate just asking photogs to shoot me and then the conversation is over but it flunked badly.
Basically even though I was very seriously hunting for a photog to just take a handful of photos, I would say "only if you're free to" or "if you have time", which made the photog feel good about their decision that I took into account, but then I was backburner-ed. Even worse chances that I cosplay semi-niche shit.

>>9029966
That idolm@ster gathering made me wish I had friends that like idolm@ster, all day. All those sparkling outfits made me wish I actually put in effort for a idol outfit. I felt so out of place with my casual shit, but this is probably my last con so too late.
And sidenote, the Rika and Mika are sisters and do have boyfriends; their cosplay page is Shiawase Cosplay.

I really wanted to make the meetups this year since I only know some trips/anons and you guys sound super dope to hang with, but con time speeds up for me especially when I'm drinking already. Seems like the meetups were what saved the con for some though. I ain't doin' Damnime again next year
>>
>>9030680
Who were you Anon?
And I know that feel, I go to the imas meet ups every year hoping to make some friends who are into idolmaster but usually it's either empty or full of weirdo's, at least the turn put was great this time.

And fuuuuggg, I kinda figured they would, FML.
>>

>2 rows
>empty tables

>>
Is there anything really worth doing on the last day? How is the ending ceremony? I don't feel like leaving home if it's not anything spectacular.
>>
>>9030705
No they have a jury system but they leave the application window open so long that everyone applies and they have to sort through almost a thousand applications. They take so long that people go to other cons they applied for or just couldn't get a room. They shold really go back to first come first serve with partial judging.

That being said the AA was still one of the better parts of the weekend. It was pretty high quality stuff for the most part but I wish there was more fandom variety. There wasn't a lot for the more old school fans that weren't prints. Though kudos to the guys in the back with more non Awakening and Fates Fire Emblem stuff. Speaking of fire blwm everyone had charms of the Hoshido and Mohr nobles even though there are a ton of other characters in that game and they aren't necessarily the most popular
>>
>>9030705
It's not that they couldn't fill them. AA is just incompetent as fuck and couldn't process the waitlist on time. For some reason they refused to sell at-con too.

Yeah, it was "juried" this year but there were some phenomenally shitty artists so that probably doesn't mean anything

Yeah I had the same experience. The sad thing for me was that I traveled from FL (thankfully for other reasons) and this is my first west coast con. So without friends and things to do it was a big bust.

One of the things that really irritated me was the security. I waited 2 hours for pre reg (which is pretty good compared to the lines I saw later) and why were there 2-3 volunteers at different checkpoints of the line but they had 3-4 open computers? (Yeah yeah printer issues but still) Another thing was why do they need to literally READ what was on my badge to let me through. Isn't the character supposed to say what day you paid for? (Or that would make too much sense) I'm literally holding my badge up to them and they'd keep stopping me to read the pass. Just make the print bigger or something.

I'll be going to AX on Friday so maybe that'll be a better experience. I was the Lisa Lisa blue-yellow variation from the All star battle game. Today I'll be in a platypus kigurumi if anyone is still around.

>>
AX bound least ill get to see jam project and tm revolution
>>
This con was so weak that its the first time in a long ass time that I won't have post-con depression

Never again
>>
>>9030565

I meant having a stroke. No joke. They kicked us outta the room while conops handled shit
>>
>>9030680

Casual outfit, were you the Kaede or Anzu maybe?
>>
>>9030950
Idk man. This con was eye opening. It's a great con to socialize, but also to experience the weeb/geek culture
>>
>>9030996
That's the impression I got. After going to so many cons these things have mostly just become an excuse to meet up with old friends again and be around people is similar interests. The at con events and activities are just a nice addition.

>>
>>9030874
Might stop altogether for the forseeable future since I'm moving to buttfuck nowhere, Illinois and I'm poorfag enough as it is so flying out somewhere is basically a no go. I want to try SoCal cons at some point since everyone is saying those are better.
>>
>>9030680
I probably could have taken photos for you. Meh, next time, or at AX maybe

Why does NorCal have to be the most boring shithole on earth?

Hahaha I thought you were Anya too, I remember hearing you were going to cosplay Kaede so I was looking for you to say hi and give out the extra iM@S keychains I had.

If you're serious about making new iM@S friends, you can shoot me an e-mail and I'll throw down some social media, I'm always up to make new iM@S friends since they're rare as fuck in a sea of Love Live. If not, I'll stop by and say hi at AX at least.
>>
>>9031125
Did you NOT go to the meetup? It was pretty fucking good this year. Normally it's only that iM@S group that comes to fanime every year + a few others but this year we had a really good turn out.

Only disappointment was the lack of Ranko.
>>
>>9031175
Ranko plus 80s sounds like bad news unless you're doing a swimsuit or something
>>
Just like with most people here, Fanime was a bore for me. Really didn't do much other than walk around and play some games. Panels were pretty lame too.

Does anyone have con recommendations? Also, is Anime Expo any good? Thinking of going next year.
>>
so did anyone else see beanie carrying the wasted asian boy last night?
>>
>>9031211
AX never fails me.
>>
>>9031211
Expo is killer for guests
Lines are horrible, hot (well same temp as fanime this year)
Expensive if you go to all the events
Great costumes
Shitty photo areas

It'll still occupy your time better than fanime does
>>
>>9031211
Unless they changed it from when I went 2 years ago. It's better than Fanime but everything is more spread out and compared to anime, finding info on panels and meet ups is a fucking pain in the ass since the booklet they give you gives you no info and you literally have to go online and find shit yourself, which was a pain for me because I had no phone.
>>
>>9031228
The best is when you have to travel from the far side of the dealers hall to the concert venues
>>
>>9031233
Or when you realize you forgot something at the hotel and have to walk all the way across the convention center, wait in line for the shuttle, walk up to the hotel, and then wait in line again and walk some more in 90 degree weather.
>>
>>9031225
Does AX's dealer's hall have a better selection of merch? All I seemed to find was nothing but goodies for mainstream anime and whatever else is hot at the moment in the "nerd world".
>>
>>9031247
It's pretty much the same shit as Fanime give or take a few vendors. It's larger so you'll probably find better stuff.
>>
>>9031247
It has more company booths (good smile, animate, nis America, Atlus, etc) so there are exclusives and lots of stuff from them. The most important part is that they are REASONABLY PRICED. I'd say selection outside of those booths is in general the same, just more of it. You'll see a lot of the same booths as you do here because they basically go to all the cons in the area.

>>9031243
That's a good point. All the hotels are detached from the con center and some of them are a far walk if you don't want to wait for the shuttle

>>
>>9031114
>I was the Kaede with a wig I trimmed too short. Everyone thought I was Anya.
I recognized you as Kaede anon!
>>
I was a little disappointed with this Fanime. I was expecting more turnips, but the hotels were being fun police and patrolling for parties. Someone was texting me whenever he found a party, followed by 'lol nvm shut down' within the next 30 minutes. It was depressing.

One of my friends had a room out of the way and neighbored with people who were also partying, so that saved the con from being a total disappointment.

Also, I think I spent more time in elevators and in lines to get to elevators than I did at the actual con.

>>9031223
He was staying with me for the con, don't judge
>>

I didn't know about it and was volunteering most of the weekend :/
>>
>>9031318
You fucked up desu anon, I doubt the turn out will be that big again since it was riding the CG anime wave. There's always AX though.
>>
>>9031323

>>
>>9031317

>>9031457
>tfw I'm a native of San Jose
>tfw people hate my local cons and my food places I frequent
Feels bad man.
>>
>>9031457
I think the important thing is that you made a major misplay in your redtaurant choices. Fanime has like the best food options for a Cali con. Ikes place, Smoke Eaters, Iguanas, Hoagies steak out, La Vics, the restaurants around San Pedro square, and so many other good options.
>>
>>9031460
They're the ones going to Dennys and expecting quality. Hate to see what they would be saying if iFanime was in Oakland or Rixhmond. Notches don't know about the real shit holes of the Bay Area
>>
>>9031468
>Ikes place,

>>
>>9031483
Damn I got to remember that. I rarely go to them since I never knew there was one in SJ.
>>
>>9031333
No Psycho Donuts? La Vic's? The Gordon Biersch Brewing Restaurant? That place has a really good bar, and really good options.

>>9031471
This.
>>
>>9031468
>best food options
>not San Diego
Hodads alone validates this. Best damn burgers I've ever had.
And fucked up fast food is the least of San Jose's problems. I'm not mad at the food or service as much as those 2 restaurants exemplified everything I hate about this city. As a local seagull explained, San Jose is a lot smaller than LA so its weirdos are much more condensed. The constant stream of police sirens and witnessing of a bike theft sure didn't help and neither did the Satanic pentagram graffiti and cockroaches. Doesn't help my a guy in my group who we despise like no other member lives there and now it makes perfect sense that such a shitty cuck would be a product of such a shitty cuckfest of a ""city""
>>

>>

>>
>>9031492

>>
Did....the con seem really lackluster this year to anybody else?
>>
>>9031517

>>
>>9031520
Holy shit this. I just got home and was literally thinking the same; no post-fanime depression. Just... yea meh, it's over.
>>
>>9030426
That vendor is my favorite vendor. It's actually a husband and wife duo (white guy and Asian gal).

They told me last year that they wouldn't be attending this year's Fanime because Fanime were being dicks to them. My memory is fuzzy, but it was something like, Fanime significantly upping the cost to vendors, getting shafted with hotels and setup times, and forcing them to sign up waaaaaay earlier in advance. Some new BS rules or something, and they just couldn't do it this year.

They were super disappointed too. They'd been doing fanime for over a decade or something.

I'm probably going to complain to Fanime on either Twitter or their forum so that they know they goofed. I want my favorite anime vendor back ;_;

>>
>>9031309
I hate that this is the mentality that so many guys have at cons now.

You know, the whole reason cons got started was so that anime geeks could share their love of anime with each other in a place where we wouldn't be judged. But cosplay and social media e-celebs (aka, attention whores) have taken over the con scene. Now I have to share what was once a safe geek space with slutty attention whores and horney and sexually frustrated teenage boys who look at these weekends as their right get laid.

Fucking gross.
>>
>>9031544
Oh no, I left it immediately. I was just curious to hear one of the "hardcore" play last night, but all he did was play j-core. Wasting a pill on a shitty con rave is lame. There were a few raves going on within driving distance where they would have been better spent. Besides, doing drugs at "raves" and "parties" does not make you a socially well adjusted individual. If you need drugs to have fun, well, I feel sorry for you.
>>
Well, I had a Bretty good time.
After Friday's shutdowns I got a grill's number while smoking and we hung out most of the weekend. We ate at great places like iguanas and GB's, then went to the BW ball and watched game of thrones after. There was more stuff, but I really like her so ill leave those details out, hue hue.
2 things, she lives 2 hours away and isn't into cosplay.
But other than that I'm a bit smitten, but I'm sure it was just a fling.
As far as the con goes, it seemed poorly planned and a bit rushed.
But I'd go again, I met all of you so at any future con won't be so awkward.

Also I just realize she has my jacket, SHIT.

Also also, concerning San Jose that hasn't been said, it's a little shite the con center/hotels are right in the landing vector of the airport. Lol, like almost perfectly.
>>

>>
>>9031460
Don't feel too bad. We all feel this way about the entirety of NorCal. Not just San Jose.
>>

>>
>>9031563
>stop doing the exact same things that I do, but in a slightly different fashion than how I do them!!1!!11!
>what I liek is better than what you like!!1
>I really pity you for not doing the same exact things the same exact way that I do them

Is this... autism?

Sorry you didn't enjoy yourself anon. I stopped by the dance for only a little bit, and me and my friends had fun. We didn't expect anything off the hook, I mean it's a dance a friggin anime convention, but we had fun. Got to dance to Japanese music and be in the relatively safe company of fellow weeaboos.

If people can handle their shit and maintain their composure then I don't see any problem with someone wanting to roll at a con dance. In fact, the cons that try to create a more rave-like atmosphere always have the better dances (kinda lame that Fanime didn't even allow glowsticks in).

In all my years of going to cons, it's been the late night drunks that tend to ruin things.
>>
>>9031560
Wow, sorry we invaded your safe space and use it to hook up and make friends. Next time I will issue a trigger warning every time my cosplaying ass enters the convention space sp you can run to your hug box where you judge us non nerds.
>>
>>9031517

Something felt... lacking. Maybe it's the fact Sillicon Valley Comic Con was packed and had super-interesting panels and wasn't exploded everywhere like Fanime is, but also had their shit together in a way that made Fanime on its best years look like chumps. Maybe it's the fact there didn't seem to be as many cosplayers or regulars, or the fact Linecon came back, or the fact a lot of the panels got cancelled and shuffled and people had hotel problems out the ass. Maybe it's the dumb badge check point they set up at the main hall that smashed everyone in, maybe it was the heat, maybe it was the fact Masq only had, what, 48 entries?

Maybe it's the fact I'm realizing I like capeshit, movies, and vidya more than weebshit. Jeremy Renner, William Shatner, their costume contest, the panels, but I really think Big Wow really blew it out of the water this year. Even Clockwork Alchemy had good shit.
>>
On the plus side, I got to chat half an hour with the Dude cosplayer who shows up to every major Cali con on Monday. He is super cool.

Yep. Reality was Nega-Tuxedo Mask who was basically /co/ shitting all over 'second rate Anime Expo' and how shitty mainstream anime was. They do not have a brick and mortar store, but they do have a crappy online store that is in MUCH need of a overhaul.

www.animedepot.com

They used to be located in the Bay Area, but moved to Texas years ago. I knew them from Texas cons so when I moved to the Bay Area was was pleasantly surprised to see them at Fanime.

I really hope they can come back to Fanime next year though. I always buy in bulk from them once or twice a year at cons, and being a repeat customer they remember me and usually give me a discount when I buy a bunch. Plus they are super nice people and really down to Earth.

>>
>>9031750
do you think that the volunteer status of staff is a problem? today at the closing ceremony they said they have 1,100 staff who are all volunteers

the additional time commitment and work demanded of staff just seems like it isn't worth it. they aren't going to find the most competent and skilled people if all they offer is a "free" badge that you have to work 22 hours for and 10% off a hotel room

seems like a good joke honestly

>>9031683
Don't forget there's way less rationale to come out to Fanime from East, Midwest, South, Northwest, etc. Anime North for the Canucks, Animazement and Megacon for the East Coast, then Momocon, a shitton of comic cons from Houston to Tulsa. Even small-ass places like Anime Oasis still draw decent crowds.
>>
>>9031756

"they do it for free" doesn't mitigate or excuse the quality of their performance. a fuck up is a fuck up.

the return of linecon, for instance, has no real excuse considering it was all but obliterated the past two years, ESPECIALLY after the 2013 Fairmont Maze fiasco. prereg initially had QR codes (from Dynect), meaning that they originally booked the same firm that handled this shit before, until we got barcodes from Experient who were swapped to at the last second for i-still-don't-know-what-reason.

don't give me any bullcrap about how shit was moved around from the former reg location to make room for more "event space," either. first off, that still doesn't explain why linecon became a thing again. second off, the place where it used to be was made to be viewing rooms, which were moved from the hall on the Marriott side for a cosplay gathering space (read: tables and chairs) and a Goodwill/Salvation Army-inspired clothing store so that people could wear hand-me-downs for the B&W ball. personally, i think those two things were terrible allocations of space, but that's my opinion.

volunteers they may be, and it's true enough that they put in all the behind-the-scenes work to make this thing happen to begin with, but that doesn't excuse blatant errors that higher-ups have made that trickle down to where the paid attendees feel it

hotel reg based on con prereg date shenanigans. that shit was the fubar foundation on which everything else was built

Is it time for the next chair to be an outsider ie someone not within the Fanime ranks? The higher ups are holding onto something that's not working when this con needs to evolve and evolve quickly

natural reaction to lack of con-based stimulus especially if it's your first. meet up with friends - especially if they were with you - and watch some chinese cartoons, play vidya, shoot the shit, just enjoy yourselves in general...you'll get through it

They started a poll wondering if gaijin no name bands would be better for fanime.

Remember that one year The Trims were the Masquerade starters? They weren't thrilled and a lot of the crowd was wondering who they were.

Well the linecon example isn't really what I was referring to, I meant like in general if there were smaller hiccups that could have been handled by individual, skilled staff members

Something is definitely wrong if higherups can make these shit and unnecessary decisions at the last minute for no apparent reason though.
I'm not sure if it is better or worse if a single person is making them up the chain, or a group of people

man, why can't fanime just get some actual japanese bands that people have heard of...like seriously who the fuck is da-ice

i couldn't tell you. even if they did - who would they give that power to? the first thing that comes to mind regarding this is that they still want to keep this an "indie con" in the sense that it seems they want to limit corporate structure as much as possible to be able to maintain as much of their "creative liberty" as they can - which i understand. it has a certain charm that shill-based AX is void of. honestly, as i typed this out, it's much the same sentiment that was echoed when Candlestick Park was up for demolition. a lot of local fans had a "it's a dump, but it's OUR dump" mentality - one that i can empathize with and one that i'm sure the inner circle of Fanime brass does, too.

i'm no expert, so i couldn't even begin to speculate steps that need to be taken to elevate Fanime to a better status. shit, i've been going to this thing for the past 11 years now. the last great delivery for me was 2014. i'm gonna echo a lot of other anons here and say maybe i've just been getting jaded. who knows? maybe i just have a soft spot for this convention and i want to hope against hope that they'll figure something out to make it so this convention recaptures that special something that made me come back all those years before
>>
>>9031814

that's what i'm saying. the con HAD a professional firm that handled it up to about a week or two before day zero at which point minds were changed. they had a proven track record the past two years, but someone decided to fix what wasn't broken and go with another firm. lord knows why.
>>
>>9031842
Do the higher-ups make money off Fanime?

"By Fans, For Fans" seems like a load of bullshit to me. They pretty much just use it as a way to have the staff work for essentially nothing.

They sure as fuck aren't a registered nonprofit
>>
>>9031850
Probably stupid infighting, last-minute extra fee increase (which was why those gaming PCs never returned and staff had to bring their own PC until AFK filled the void), or incompetence. Probably all three.
>>
>>9031831

in the end, who and how many to blame isn't really the important part. it's the results. i want to believe that them not taking at-con prereg for next year is the first of many steps they've seen that they need to take to make fanime great again.
>>
>>9031851

i'm not knowledgeable enough to be able to tell you where the money goes at the end of the day. i'm not that deep in the mix. i'm just an attendee who keeps his eye open and just speculates.
>>
>>9031842
>I'm no expert, so i couldn't even begin to speculate steps that need to be taken to elevate Fanime to a better status.

Really if Fanime fixed its reg and was more on point with updates and announcements, people would be singing its praise to the high heavens
>>
>>9031793
>>9031683
Funny enough that would fix a lot of fanime's problems. Less people flying in would mean easier hotel access, less crowding and maybe even less wild parties

>generally unimpressive programming block
For the most part I think Fanime sponsored events (B&W) ball, stage zero, etc) if anything most of the actual fan panels are the ones where the weakness is showing. How would you bulk up the program block if most of the panels submitted were shit? I'm assuming this fact as if this is what was chosen then the ones rejected could be worse

I wore my SideM Touma at the All Idols gathering. I'll admit it was a little embarrassing being 1 of 4 non-LoveLive there and the only Imas rep, but I felt bad for the organizer, she kept apologizing to us.
I was going back and forth on AX myself, but if there's definitely going to be an Imas meetup, I'll be there.

Fanime is run by ARG, Anime Resource Group, which is a for-profit corporation and last I checked was classified as an S-Corp with shareholders.

"In general, S corporations do not pay any federal income taxes. Instead, the corporation's income or losses are divided among and passed through to its shareholders. The shareholders must then report the income or loss on their own individual income tax returns."

The shareholders in ARG directly get any of the income from the con. This should make it more obvious to you and others in this thread why things have gone the way they have in recent years, most especially in terms of less guests and cheaper guests.
>>
>>9031929
shit like this is why I'm afraid of asking for photos, I hardly slept the entire weekend and couldn't really remember the names of a lot of anime and characters. how are you supposed to ask for photos when you forgot the character's name :S

The rest of my brain was functional, but it was totally fucked in the anime department

>>9031930
Yeah, apparently even AX is more of a nonprofit than Fanime is. And they absolutely blow Fanime out of the water in recent years when it comes to guests

I wasn't disappointed with this year's Fanime as my first con, but I'm a bit sad that it potentially could have been much better
>>
>>9031933
And then all ask the eternal question of "does Fanime need the anime/manga industry, but not in a full-blown corporate con like AX but more like how the industry is at SakuraCon, ACEN, or Otakon?"
>>
>>9031944
I don't think either the purely corporate, or purely fan-made are the right approaches. There has to be some kind of optimal middle ground.
On a related note, I felt that there were way too many non-anime panels and programming. If you leave it up to the fans completely, it's going to go to fucking shit and not even be about anime anymore.

I remember in previous years, I was always somewhat interested in going to Fanime, but looking at the guest list I could instantly tell they were booked for cheap, and always decided against it. But having gone there now, I'm glad to know that most of the convention is not really about that anyway for most attendees - at least in its current state.
>>
>>9031952
ha, did you see the 'homestuck is anime" panel in the program?

I wanted to go but was a little drunk and thought it a bad idea.

My highlights:
>gaming hall (4 player Power Stone 2, shmups, and Saturn Bomberman, fuck yeah)
>getting my photo taken with lego Sailor Moon, seeing two Sailor Stars, and photographing Noriko and Kazumi from Gunbuster
>pulling an all nighter with my friends on Sunday night between the dance and the hentai room
>23rd floor Marriott corner room with a clear view of the front of the con

>mfw my friend was a volunteer and escorted me to a counter where I got my badge instantly Saturday morning while plebs sat in line for hours to get theirs

Seriously though, most of the volunteers are just weebs who grew up, but want to give back to their local con, which gave them years of entertainment.

I'm not sure how far up in the bureaucracy you can point blame for this year's problems, but most of the volunteer staff you encounter at the con don't call the shots, they just follow the directions from someone higher up.

My feedback to Fanime would be:
>unfuck the fuckery that you fucked up with badge pick ups, seriously WTF?
>better guests, if they aren't Japanese then I really don't give a fuck
>better panels, even just focusing panels to be on ANIME (*actual* anime) would be a step in the right direction
>earlier and more frequent updates on their site
>make booking a hotel fair
>don't dick over your long time vendors, they are an integral part of the con

It's honestly just a few things, that seem easy to fix. I gotta wonder what kind of morons are calling the shots.

>>9031930
>Fanime is run by a for-profit corporation
>using over 1,100 volunteers

Well that clarifies the crux of the problem. Not sure how it can be fixed though...

Yeah, the de-anime-fication of anime cons has been a really sad thing to me (I'm a huge weeaboo). These days a hefty portion of merch, cosplays, and panels are not even about anime.
>>
So which of the major California cons should I go to? I just went to Fanime because it was an hour's drive.

If you could only go to one con a year in California, would it be Anime Expo?

Silicon Valley Comic Con.

yeah AX is probably the right answer, but it can be significantly cheaper for some to just go to Fanime if it's within close driving distance

hotel can be had for real cheap if you look in the right places, I saw people offering floor spots at Fairmont for 65-80 bucks

I should mention, before anyone thinks I only went to All Idols instead of the Imas gathering, I was there as My Fist Star Rin.

But all cons leave fan panels to the guests. If cons do panels its usually off the backs off of t heir GoH

Let's say Fanime does this and not enough anime panels get submitted. What then?

Sorry, I should have clarified - guests/fans still do the panels, but anything obviously non-anime related shouldn't have a panel

Cosplay workshops and stuff are fine, but the amount of random bullshit panels at Fanime was crazy

I believe this was Saturday's schedule
>>
>>9032035
That is saturday's

But still my question is unanswered. Say Fanime does not get enough quality anime related panels. Do you put up trash or move to non anime?
>>
>>9032086
they could let the existing panels run for longer if they wished I suppose, I don't think it would hurt for 15 minute breaks in between either

currently they run back to back and it's pretty exhausting if you want to catch more than a couple per day
>>
>FanimeCon 2017 Guest: Chris Cason

Oh, Fanime, you can't fool me into thinking you'll do stuff early this year by announcing a guest for next year so soon.
>>
>>9031898
Once SFCC comes online, that may ease some of the Fanime woes... may. A lot of cons have tried to fill the Wondercon void...
