Wow, Da'vid shito:aL! Didn't expect anyone here to remember/know them. They were definitely one of the most unique and eccentric bands in the scene. I miss them so much.

Aioria was also pretty good, it had some members from Da'vid.
Still consider their one and only album to be one of the best VK stuff I ever heard.

Da'vid shito:aL is really cool, glad to see people getting into them even after all these years. They were short-lived (like most indie bands), but left a big impact on the VK scene, there was nothing else like them.

They were also friends with Raphael which is another of my favorite 90s vk bands.

I like Lareine, not their biggest fan but they were pretty good.
Mainly I'm not a big fan of Kamijo (and Lareine is mostly his own project, he even kept the name Lareine even when he was soloing during the Scream era).
But I admire Mayu and Machi, they are the best.

Have you heard their early stuff (when they were called Laliene, I think)?

I love their early stuff the most, specially their demos. Posting a few pics of those times.

Did Mayu ever come back? He disappeared in 2006 and I never heard of him again.
And the last thing I heard from Machi was his Chanton l'amour project, which was pretty good, but I think they only ever released a single.
There's also a side-project by Mayu called Kakuunohitobito, but I never could get a hold of anything by theirs either.

I like pretty much all of early lareine, the demos, blue romance and firete, after that it was all hit or miss, I didn't like Kamijo's solo stuff like Grand Pain, and some later neo-Lareine stuff like the many ballads they did kind of bored me, but they still put out some good tracks like Knight and Priest and Gipsy, although I think they could never go back as being as good as the 90s Lareine, when Machi was in the band, maybe it's just my impression.

Could anyone explain to me the appeal you see in this fashion?

There isn't really a set fashion for visual kei, especially in the 90s when it was less homogenized and more experimentation was going on.

Lareine in particular (the band in the OP) was heavily inspired by Rose of Versailles. They even did a cover of the opening theme
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qt9E3MdoEes

Then it varies from band to band. Most of them had a goth/punk/glam look to them but there was a lot of different sub-styles and others that don't even fit anywhere like da'vid shito al: >>8981900

A lot of the j-street fashion was influenced (and vice-versa) by many of these 90s vk bands.

>>
>>9001006
Thing is, even if you didn't had that intention, it sounds like you did. Probably because of the way you wrote the question and also, because is really difficult to explain something like that, since is something really subjetive. We could tell you "because it looks elegant" or "because it looks like something out of fantasy" or "because it looks beautiful" and you wouldn't get it, because you won't eee it that way, anyway.
>>
>>9000971

That's pretty cool.

I just looked up the set-list
http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/kamijo/2015/zepp-divercity-tokyo-tokyo-japan-13f27551.html

I see now, it was a Kamijo solo event, where Lareine returned for a short set, Versailles and even New Sodmy were also there.
It's similar to the Dix Inferno events where Mana often reunites with older members. I still remember in the first Dix Inferno Mana formed a super band where he played drums, and Kamijo with Sanaka from Fatima (who also was a MM roadie) on vocals performed Baroque by Malice Mizer.
Michiru from Aioria also did something similar a couple years back where Aioria also performed a set of 5 songs or so.
Anyway the songs they selected are good, still too few to celebrate a revival like that, wish it was a full concert, but still it's better than nothing. Kinda weird to open with a song like Lillie Charlotte though, would have preferred Death Piano or some other more iconic number.

Agree with that. I'm guessing they just went with Sony era songs, if I recall correctly Kamijo only used major released Lareine songs/clips during all his 20th Anniversary tour. Or maybe they went with the ones they remembered the most, since Machi and Mayu haven't been on stage in ages. That specially applies to Lillie Charlotte where they usually just faked playing the instruments along the backtrack, meaning less practice needed for it.
I still wanna believe that now they got together once they will make at least another live reunion, or even release something together. Meanwhile, have more old pics, now from the time Kamijo started playing with hair bleaching.

He probably is way more popular or well known now, and that probably why took that risk, you know singing the hymn at Baseball matchs, being a regular on Hey Hey Hey and stuff like that.

When did Kamijo met the prime minister? It's the same prime minister who's an X Japan fanboy? If so, that guy was awesome.

About Gackt, the guy took advantage of his popularity in MM.
In his auto biography he says that he was kicked out of the band by decision of the other 4 members, but Mana says otherwise.
Everything points at Mana having a fight with Gackt. Probably Gackt wanted to take Malice Mizer in a different direction than Mana wanted, but this is just a guess. I think Kozi and Gackt are still friends, and he was also friends with Kami until the end (Kami passed away after Gackt left), so I think it was mostly a Mana vs Gackt thing.

His first album Mars was enjoyable, it still had some Mizer-y stuff (illness illusion), while also going completely J-pop with songs like Vanilla or DEARS.
Gackt was always my least favorite MM singer, Klaha being my favorite and Tetsu my 2nd, both are wildly different yet represent the essence of MM. Gackt was OK, but Klaha completely blew the fuck out of him in terms of voice and skills.
Klaha's solo career was completely bizarre though. I admit I enjoy Nostal Lab and Marchen as a guilty pleasure.

Then it's not the same prime minister I was thinking, but I was just looking up and it seems Abe also reunited with Yoshiki in Los Angeles.

Anyway, what's the story behind it? Why was Kamijo invited there? Is Abe a fan of his? Or maybe his wife?
The prime minister I was thinking of was Koizumi, he even used X Japan's "Forever Love" for his TV ad campaigns, and I believe Yoshiki performed on the piano for a national event once.
>>
>>9011729
I feel like it's more than Mana vs Gackt though.
I keep reading that no one told Gackt when Kami passed away so he missed the funeral. He was on tour at the time, but still why didn't the other band members say something if they were on friendly terms?

If one of my band members wanted to sell his music by appearing naked in a commercial, I think I'd want him to quit too desu.

I guess this is all speculative, but I hope there's a reunion with Klaha one day.

About Kamijo, I'm not totally sure, but around that time he took part on a small fashion show where Abe's wife was too, I'm guessing she asked him to be there too, but I can't find any info in english on it. I do know Abe's wife has worked as a radio DJ too, so I guess it makes sense she knows about music, and probably knew or is a fan of Kamijo.

I didn't know that about SB fans. Well, both SB and PoM were hugely influenced by Depeche Mode and have a similar sound, but SB was a lot more popular, Pride of Mind was more indie and underground.

There is actually 2 live songs of them recorded professionally due to being featured on a V.A. VHS tape called Nervous Night

The songs are U.RA.GI.RI (by Kozi) and Meikyuu no tobira, a Mana song that later got cannibalized into Shuumaku e no tobira for Malice Mizer's first demo, which was always a favorite of mine.

U.RA.GI.RI also got released on a demo tape, and there's also another demo tape which is self-titled and has 2 nameless songs.

Matenrou self-titled demo tape with 2 unknown tracks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aTlgIupwsk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rumcXb3DYI

I remember for a while there was concern about whether or not this demo is actually from Matenrou, since it sounds so different than the other 2 songs. But maybe they're songs not composed by Mana and Kozi, and instead were composed by Kaie (the vocalist), since they sound somewhat similar to the stuff he released after Matenrou, on Dunexxxx. Could also be Jun (drummer) or Kenichi (guitarist) songs.
They're still good songs, I love the 2nd track. Sounds more like standard VK, but still good.

And this is an old one, Girl'e
Mana's punk band from before Matenrou, when he was just a teenager. He was on guitar here, and his stage name was Serina.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPPYi6WWDlQ

It's funny because even if the music is nothing like his later bands, the guitar solo sounds like a Mana guitar solo.

There are a lot of videos of early Malice Mizer luckily. They were super rare and almost unobtainable for western fans back in the day as they circulated only within a few select MM fans in Japan, but eventually some western fans started acquiring these tapes, ripped them, and today they're almost all uploaded on youtube, both videos and audio recordings.

There are a handful of songs that were never recorded on studio, and forgotten in the Tetsu era.

I love this one, Portugal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJwYttJKqgc

And some of them were actually recorded later, for example Shi no butou on Voyage. Personally, I like the Tetsu vocals better, the song was obviously composed to fit his vocal range. It feels a bit out of place in the romantic, french poppy Voyage, it sounds like a memoire track.

woops, I posted another track, but it's OK because Freeze Me is also amazing.

This is Portugal:

I don't know why but this song sounds like Kozi wrote it.

Mana just posted this on his Twitter.
He's savaging some really old MIDIs from Malice Mizer to use at the upcoming Malice Mizer session at the upcoming deep sanctuary event in August.

I'm dying to know what are they going to perform and also sad I'm not able to attend.

First time. Have you gone before?

Is it a bad idea to wear MmM? The clips I saw of Malice Mizer concerts look so tame. No crowd surfers or even much movement in the crowds.

I'm confused if this event more special than previous Deep Sanctuary events. I don't think they ever mentioned the name Malice Mizer before, but I could be very wrong.

Never, but I know people who did.

Japanese concerts typically aren't as wild as western concerts (unless you go to really underground punk/hardcore gigs). I think one of the most recent MdM events was at a venue with all seats.
On MdM concerts people do headbang, but they stay in place, no mosh or crowd surf.
I guess it feels a bit cold and artificial, but at the same time it makes it easy to focus on the show.

They already had previous MM reunions, I think the first one was in 2010. They've done it a couple more times.
The MM sessions are short though, they perform only 2 or 3 songs each time. I think they've done Sakai no chi to bara, Beast of Blood, Hakai no hate, N.p.s N.g.s and S-Conscious, as well as a Rob Zombie cover (?).
Hopefully this year they'll do a longer set.

Malice Mizer really has a special place in my heart and they're also a band my husband has loved since forever. Now we're going to the concert together and it's giving me a lot of feels.

Have a lot of fun, I hope this thread is still here or a new one is made so you can report back, would love to read about it, although I'm sure the girl from the mana-sama site/blog will also write a live report.

I personally would hope for a Tetsu-era song, what's more, I'd hope that Tetsu makes a surprise appearance (he's still friends with Kozi, so it's not totally impossible, although unlikely).
Merveilles songs are also likely, they already performed S-Conscious before. Would be cool if they performed something like Bel Air.

This reunion seems to be the most hyped up yet, so I'm expecting something cooler than the previous short sessions they did.
>>
>>9034154

That would be fucking amazing, the only thing that could top that would be to bring back Klaha from whatever planet he is on.
Then again, Kamijo somehow managed to do that with Machi.

Da'vid is my favorite VK band along with MM.

Best song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEy0cdmiY68
>>
>>9036074

That song got stuck in my head badly, it's so catchy. And it has a weird feel about it. Sounds like classical music mixed with bizarre punk... hard to describe, but where has this been all my life?

Anywhere I can get their stuff? CD Japan has nothing from them
>>
>>9033821
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this one (and the other one he posted at the same time) the first sanctioned no-makeup Mana picture?

Ah I see. The peak of my MM interest was around 2000 when the internet didn't turn to shit with social media yet, but MM and Mana solo pictures were few and far between and all very coveted. After the hiatus I stopped following really so I guess I missed out on a lot that has surfaced since then.

There are a couple candid shots, also I think Mana actually has some makeup in that old picture.

I have a pic where Mana is without makeup and you can easily see all his face features without makeup, it was a candid shot taken when he went to Europe, many years ago.
He's wearing glasses though, as always. I'll post it if I can some other day, it's at another PC I can't access right now, in the mean time have some Mana smile.

>>9037486

Da'vid is really unique, but their stuff is somewhat hard to come by, but not expensive. You can probably find their hoshi no hako CD for cheap in stores like puresound.
>>
Unpopular opinion in this thread but to me gackt was the best vo of MM, but to me Gackt is a freakin'great vo in general and the magical creature elf fantasy prince angel vampire theme suited him a lot.

I wonder if someone will ever find out what the heck 'went wrong'. I mean it's all just rumors right?
>>
>>9042170

The only official source we have about Gackt leaving is what he wrote in his auto biography book. I don't remember in detail right now but it said something like he got fired for no reasons by decisions of the other members (mainly Mana and Kozi). But I don't buy his version 100%.
I think it's possible that both Mana and Kozi wanted him to leave, but there must be a reason he's hiding or not admitting.

I like Gackt in Malice Mizer, and it's generally the most liked and famous era. I'm quite surprised to see other fellow Tetsu fans around here, we're usually the minority.
Still, some of Gackt's MM songs are among my favorites, like Uruwashiki kamen no shoutaijou (by the way, there was supposed to be a Moi dix Mois remake of this song).
I even love Le Ciel a lot, and that song was written by Gackt, the only MM single not written by Mana or Kozi.
It's Gackt's solo career that steered me away from him, I liked a couple tracks on Mars but not the rest.
>>
>>9030812

Man I love MM's early 90s look so much. Their later costumes were amazing, but the thrift-store goth thing they had going in their early days was so cool.
>>
>>9042197
>I'm quite surprised to see other fellow Tetsu fans around here, we're usually the minority.
Add me to the list. I think all three were great, each in his own right, but if I have to pick then Tetsu edges the other two if only so slightly.

Gackt's very good and all and he has the most popular songs going for him. But I also feel he wasn't very sincere and a bit of a tryhard sometimes.

Klaha is great but in the short period we got to see him he was so serious business. Maybe it was the concept, or maybe it was the legacy he stepped into that was holding him back. But his very goth and operatic but very serious business and expressionless performance gets boring to me after a couple of songs.

Finally Tetsu... Tetsu was the original raw energy and this maniacal insane tinge to his performance is what wins me every time, period.

Just compare the "Kioku to Sora" live performances by Tetsu and Klaha and you'll see what I mean. I never managed to find a Gackt version of this song - does one even exist?

This is the only Gackt solo song that I care about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11uI5i2GDiY
>>
>>9042582
>I never managed to find a Gackt version of this song - does one even exist?

Yep, they performed it for a brief period of time before Voyage released.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIQ-N2-dnkQ

You can hear it there, starting at 11:30

I personally think it sounds funny, like Gackt tries to catch up with Tetsu's rapid, logorrheic singing, but it sounds like he's running out of air.
Klaha made his version soother and slower to fit his style better.

From Gackt solo I really like Illness Illusion, it even sounds like it could be a MM song

The audience is mostly girls; from concert reports written by regulars I've read it doesn't sound like anyone's gotten their clothes damaged.

>>9042630
>You can hear it there, starting at 11:30

Totally agree with you, I miss her a lot.
Sadly nobody knows what happened to her. Around 2004, I believe, she seems to have left music, and started working as a tarot-reader under the name of Nana. She made a new blog and wrote a lot on it and seems she answered fanmail too. Near the end of 2007 she had a couple of very depressing blog posts about quitting that job, having personal issues to deal with, money problems and feeling too old being in her forties. After that she has basically dissapeared from earth.

So most of her fans are just waiting for a miracle to have her reappear someday.
Now that Larene's Machi has a twitter I feel so fucking tempted to ask him about her, since they were really close friends back then (they even hosted a website and wrote a blog together) but I'm afraid it could make him unconfortable, or the fact that he maybe doesn't know either.

Damn they're really nice, I can hear the Malice Mizer influence.

Another band that I think kinda sounds like early Malice Mizer is indies Pierrot, specifically their first album "kikurui pierrot".
Most of you are probably familiar with Pierrot (or at least Kirito), but the first record of the band featured Kirito on guitars and not vocals. Their sound was really different from what came afterwards.

Some tracks from kikurui pierrot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uGb9dbpeD8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c48L3k1dR2Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFOJIkRydpI

I know it's not exactly like Malice Mizer, or not as close as those Me-douse tracks are, but early Pierrot always satisfied my need of somewhat intricate guitar work found in MM. Kirito playing guitar was much better than as a vocalist!

I still like some of the earlier Pierrot stuff with Kirito as vocalist though, their Pandora no hako album still sounded a bit similar to their first album.
This song is amazing, and whenever I listen to it I think "yes, this is visual kei"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHRq8ChTxYI

But then their sound became more and more mainstream until it became this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyGJT-lgXIo

Still, Pierrot is in general a pretty amazing band in all its eras, but indies Pierrot will always remain my fave.

It's so beautiful.

Aioria was Malice Mizer-tier IMO.

My Japanese is terrible and Google Translate is failing me. Are Versailles fully getting back together aka making new music or is it just about more reunion concerts?

As far as I have understood they are going to make new music. They have official reunion ceremony in August and Hizaki is also going to publish a solo album then.

They are fully going back to making music again. They will release a new album on september. 13 tracks, 2 new songs and the of it will be re-recorded versions of their greatests hits, and a DVD with a small documentary on the band's come back.

Seems they will also continue doing other stuff, probably to avoid feeling stuck with Versailles again.
Hizaki will release an instrumental solo album that has Silent Knight and Desert Apple on the tracklist. Not sure what will happen with Jupiter's activities, but Zin is doing solo lives already.
Kamijo will also continue with his solo work this year at the same time, since some of his live dates got pushed thanks to the terrorist attacks in France.

I just downloaded the whole album and I'm in love.

I want to get a hold of the actual demos now.

is this a good deal? I don't care for Syndrome, but it has 2 Aioria demos for only 400 yen.

I'm guessing you're so new that you don't know that the hat Yan often wears is a Moitie knock off
