I had a fantastic local fan group who organized multiple dances per year for years. I skipped my high school's ones and got my awkward adolescent groove on as Roxy or Kanaya instead. Way more fun, and way more people that I liked being around, than I would have had at school at the time.

Size and shape looks alright, but the texture isn't working and the paint is too bright and unnatural (though that's mostly a matter of personal opinion). Not sure if there's a lot you can do with them right now, sanding papier maché can have some varied results. Maybe try using some sort of gesso or lightweight clay.

And I do think that they're small enough that you can add a layer for texture without worrying. A pro of painting is also that you can get completely clean lines OR really nice gradients, so I'd do that as well. They're not bad, but detail is what makes you stand out.

Friendleaderp is probably better known as Knightarcana by most of you.

I'll be completely honest and say that I mix Knightarcana and Murtunacaptor up more than I probably should... They've very similar profiles and both of them cosplayed Sollux and Prospit boys. Oops. Knightarcana was part of Vintage-Aeriths beta group, and you might also recognize them as John from the age-old "A Bucket Full of Homestuck" panel.

A lot of the "nuked" blogs are just URL-changes where the owner didn't bother to leave any threads by which to follow them. I'd be surprised if Shooshstab has left tumblr and cosplay entirely, but like with Cifera's old blog there's just no way to find them from their old URL. So I guess for a fair few of them it's more from lack of effort in preserving their traces rather than an active effort to get rid of them.

Same reason I had a hard time realizing that Periodicallypapaya was on the original list, or that "Friendleaderp" hadn't actually killed their blog.

Quit using what you're using, it's awful. Use paperclay or Model Magic and make sure to sand a lot, both are lightweight and sturdy. The shape, as already mentioned, is lovely and I like how sharp the tips are. If you use a better material I can see you making nice horns. Is there a reason you put them on a wire though? Unless your friend is just wearing them for fun with no wig I don't really see why you can't use the screw method. A visible wire or headband doesn't look good.

I could use more cosplayers who have like, Equius or Tavros as their main costume, as opposed to all these hundereds of Daves and Karkats. Eventually it just turns into a mush. I'm assuming you haven't cosplayed much before? It looks pretty decent as far as early cosplay attempts goes, but there's definitely room for improvement. I'd make the symbol wider, as well as more vibrant, and get a proper wig and better horns. Ampora horns are really easy to mess up, but you don't gotta get them ~perfect~ to work. at least thicken them out (especially at the base).

In general it's reallllly hard to stand out as either of them. It's a really basic design and there's only so much you can do until it comes down to headcanon face preferences. That and good photos (again). Especially if you don't have a trait that separate you from the mass of generic Karkat/Dave cosplayers (such as, say, a particularly big nose, being clearly non-white, being very masculine).

Alright so I managed to find Zillywhoooores new blog, but not any cosplay. So I guess that's all for now.

What did we learn from that? Jack fucking squat, probably.

Though I have to say that, on the topic of notes now and then... Most of the 2012-2013 cosplays didn't have more notes on average. It seems like a post that BLEW UP would gain truly ridiculous amounts of notes, but on average, a photoset would still be on the same level as most HS-cosplayers seem to be on today. It's just harder to break through and get the ~omg canon Karkat~ thing because again, we've seen so many more Karkats at this point. Just looking decent isn't going to cut it.

IMO that's a good thing, because Homestuck cosplay in general is getting better in terms of quality. With that said... I don't really think we're as creative on a whole these days when it comes to how cosplay is presented. It's more documentary (front shot, pose, bust, maybe a closeup) and less badass angles, non-representative but more kinda artsy stuff. I don't know, I might be entirely wrong but that's just my impression right off the bat. On the other hand it's not completely dead either; my favourite example of this is still Mitsuki-aizawa.

just kind popping in here with a quick question: is now a bad time to get more involved in the homestuck cosplay community? i've been cosplaying it since 2011, but was always too shy to try to get more out there. i've got a lot of plans and i'm more involved in the series than i've ever been, i'm just not sure if it's worth it considering how much homestuck has died out.

Crowmunist - I think they're doing new cosplays soon but I'm not even sure why I'm putting crow here, everyone knows crow.

Kidbunni - He's an excellent prop maker and great at what he does but his face and wigs are a little weird.. Wish he posted more tutorials and fixed his wigs up a bit but usually guys aren't all that great with makeup or wigs. It's unfortunate but whatever he's really good regardless.

Actualsharkboi - I don't see them on my dashboard often but when I do I'm not disappointed. Their Kanaya is really pretty and I enjoy their sewing skills. They do a lot of weird original character and AU type things but

Karkatinq - Really young and a huge attention seeker and overall a dick but I can't deny that she does really good makeup. Eh, nothing else is good though Seriously...so annoying. Any time she gets a compliment she basically yells "rape" and "pedophilia" and has her followers harrass people over it. I had followed her for a week before I realized how awful she was. Anyways, just a looker and not good at anything else.

Ectobiologist - Only reason I'm saying ectobiologist is because they have a really great Dave. It's pretty accurate roleplaying wise as well as face wise. They style their wig which is rare. (Reason I said roleplaying wise is because I found them through an ask blog, the blog had some in character/good casting but most were awful and cringey besides the main kids.) It's a shame though that they only cosplay god tier, they've remade it 4 times already and went through various improvements in the past few years.

Lunarlipstick - Again, mostly a looker, really good at makeup for the most part.

Merfaed - Haven't seen much from her but I very much like the way she does her makeup. Her sewing skills are adequate but shes cute.

Most of the people now are just pretty faces which is disappointing but what can you do lol

your average cosplayer gets about 40 notes tops on a cosplay, depending on number followers, and if any big names follow them.

getting more than 100 notes is nice. getting more than 300 notes is fucking impressive. Past that point, it takes a post really blowing up by accident, being amazing, or just, being shared by the right people at the right time.

The best time to post cosplay is around 4-8pm, it seems. A lot of younger cosplayers and fans are online right after school, so it's Prime Reblogging Time.

I average about 100-200 notes on a serious HS cosplay post. Cosplay is just not nearly as popular as fan art, and for the reasons mentioned above, HS stuff just doesn't much attention period. It was definitely easier to get more attention in 2013.

Anything over 1k for me has been either completely luck or successfully predicting exactly what kind of post would make it big and when. My top cosplay post has around 42k notes.

Tumblr is fickle, and it's annoying, but there still isn't a better platform at the moment.

It's mostly dumb luck, but what you have to do is make it more likely for those lucky things to happen. Post at peak times. Make sure your post isn't too long or doesn't have too many pictures. Be the first if you can. Make your posts relevant to the time, like a 4/13 relevant post for example. Pray that someone with 10k+ followers reblogs it at some point. That's all you can do.

Some of my art has 500-1000+ notes, but I posted a full colour picture w background last month and it got 50 notes. The bane of my existence is a fully coloured 3 piece johndave set- it got 3 notes. At this point i just try not to look at numbers on my own shit.

Yeah it is really sad, I've always thought about making an art/cosplay blog to hopefully make some friends and participate in fandoms but I really don't want to get obsessed with how many notes/followers I have and be overwhelmed by the pressure of having to pump out new quality content quickly
The thing with tumblr is that it is a fan site, if you don't draw fanart/pander/combine a popular thing with another popular thing etc.. it's going to be really hard to get noticed.

Old bnf here. Tumblr is a fading platform in my opinion but here's a few tips I've picked up:

>Post at the right time of the day/week. Evenings are best, as is the summer. Avoid "obvious" dead times like during exams or tv air times.

>Don't post a shitty "draft" of your cosplay or art first. Tumblr likes to reblog the first thing your followers see, so if you post a hall photo and then a beautiful edited picture the next day, expect to get mad when the hall photo gets more notes. I've seen a hall picture get notes into the thousands, while the finished set gets a fraction of that. The same thing goes for drafts of fanart.

I think the general feeling is that Crowmunist was initially brought up in these threads because she was doing some pretty dang impressive stuff, like her Davesprite and Meulin. Like alright, her kids were still clean, which was nice, and she had good photos. When she then was added to the list it was because she started doing more cosplay help and we were exciting to see what else she was going to put out. And then we just ended up with dozens of super uninteresting (albeit clean) solo beta kids shoots. It's also pretty obvious to anyone who's been following Crowmunist for a while that she's more interested in being a pretty face with a blog and a sponsorship than a cosplayer. This, combined with the fact that she's pretty obviously lurking in the threads because whenever we would discuss removing her from the list there would be a suddenly new content! Clean and sharp and not particularly interesting solo photos of the beta kids! I don't know, she's obviously not obligated to please this gang of shitheads, but I wouldn't be surprised if people feel 1) a tad cheated or 2) like she's been using the fandom to get a ladder to a different type of "fame", kind of like Spectredeflector did.

I've no idea of her actual relationship with Homestuck cosplay, but I personally just don't feel much passion from what she does.

said too. I admit that I get buttmad when I see people using cosplay as a tool for easyfame, and Crowmunist has been toeing that line for a while now. The tipping point for me was when she took an old, year-ish old progress photo of her Aradia horns, re-posted the same photo, and then claimed it was from some recent progress. It's like she's trying to stretch her notoriety out by re-hashing old photos or taking new photos of old cosplays, which seems really disingenuous.

I think you guys are giving her too much credit as far as being calculating. Crowmunist got that shirt like over a year ago and immediately posted, "Finally got this shirt! Can't wait to do a Dave cosplay in it." This cosplay obviously wasn't meant to be something new or exciting. It was just a small and easy idea she had a while ago. She probably wasn't thinking, "Oh, man. It's been x days since I last posted something. Gotta pull shit out of my ass to keep the Tumblr fame growing."

I agree calculating is the wrong word here, but she doesn't seem interested in producing any cosplay that requires effort. Pulling five new photosets out of her ass for the same old Dave cosplay isn't a mastermind scheme, but it's an easy way to pander. Most people who aren't interested in creating new cosplay stop posting it all together, so the juxtaposition between her lack of new costumes and her continuing re-posting of old ones seems like it's being done more for her followers than anything. It's like if someone stopped drawing for a fandom but kept re-posting their old art for months. It's weird.

my only regret is not actually putting a sharpened can bit on it but I couldn't because I didn't want to be pulled by the con staff so I just used a felt tip instead

Sperocor has REALLY stepped up their game the last few months. Hidemyerror has seemed pretty inactive when it comes to Homestuck, same goes for Purpledragoncaptor. Also I think this is the first Homestuck cosplay the Calliope in this pic did and I'm hoping they keep on it because all their non-Homestuck shit looks gr8.

I'm following them, and while I agree they've gotten better I still think they're just not there in terms of quality. Their cosplays are still messy and unflattering a lot of the time. They did a troll Dirk which was just incredibly boring (which goes doubly for Hidemyerrors troll Roxy which, while cleaner, could just as well have been generic fantroll #21759).

I don't know. If we go by it as a "pretty cool to follow" then yeah, but they don't line up with the quality of the other names.

Maybe you just picked a bad example photo but I would not consider this an indication of stepping up their game, considering their cosplays were never bad to start with. Like the other anon said, they've still got a long way to go to iron out their craftsmanship details. Like:

>That one side of the cape that's covered in unfinished edge threads.
>Smudgy makeup and the bald cap isn't pulled down tightly

We should still keep an eye on them because active HS cosplayers are such a rarity these days, but let's not jump the gun here.

I think that goes for the whole group they cosplay with. A lot of their homestuck cosplays seem to be hit or miss. Especially smackaroney and imaginmatrix, which are the other two staple cosplayers in that group. A lot of improvement is needed, but I think they all have potential

Yo hey Sperocor here; my friend linked me to this thread! I don't use 4chan much so I'm not??? Sure how to prove it's me but yeah I mostly wanted to say thanks for all your criticism. I already knew about the armsocks and makeup not matching, and the baldcap being super imperfect, and yeah the unhemmed Caliborn cape was straight up laziness on my part, I just wanted some cool draping shots and figured the selvage wouldn't be SUPER noticable but apparently I was wrong :p

But yeah I appreciate the feedback and if you have anything else to say as far as what I can improve on I'm always looking to learn. I know I'm far from great at this rn but hey it's fun so w/e.

I find it's easier to stretch and glue the baldcap and trim it as you go. It helps prevent that bubbling on the side. Most baldcaps come wayyy too large to start with.

You really need to work on making your costumes look good on you. This is the reason your Tavrisprite and your Caliborn are the ones that work the best on you; they're not even a little reliant on you looking good in them. Your body type and facial structure are hardly common in the scene, so you already have an uphill battle by not looking like a bishie by default.

Hey cgl, I've been out of the fandom for a while but I'm thinking of doing a last hurrah. The problem is I haven't greyed up in years and I'm having trouble getting my eye shadow to apply smoothly on top of my Snaz. I don't remember if it was always like this and I was just okay with it or if I've lost my touch, but is there a certain brand of eyeshadow or an application method I should be using?

I tend to apply the stuff with my fingers by dotting it on bit by bit. Also keeps my make-up brushes clean of snazz dust clogging it up.

You could always start off by not using a cheapo base product. IME eyeshadow applies better on top of water base than grease base but that's on Kryolan.
