Curious as to if Ame is going to have any noteworthy guests, everything is a bit quiet. Did they bring anything up at Kita?

I really hope they get not shit djs. If it's snap again, probably just going to mong out on the steps.
You brits and your amusing use of language
Anyone go to Optimus con? Loads of friends are complaining about not getting photos they've paid for.
>>8958629
They haven't updated anything in months, what's the betting we have another Gemu on our hands?
>>8959742
There's 3 spots left, I doubt it.
Anyone going to the after party at MCM London?
>>8959405
Not the only one , No reply back from email after 3 days now
Also the announcer woman drove me up the wall with the perky woop-wooping all weekend
>>8959760
>>8959744
Then why no updates? Every time I've seen a convention go radio silent over the last few years it's because somethings gone wrong and the money has "vanished". Gemu and Collidacon are prime examples.
>>8959807
>>8959807
Kita were quiet for ages about this year's event, and that went okay apart from hilton temp staff being retards.
I am so sick of this ugly attention whore in the Brum group.

Why would people line up for the piles of overpriced/fake shit they sell? I dont get it.
>>8965179
Beats me, but line up they did. All the way down the street and way around the corner.
So what are everyone's MCM plans?
>>8965179
I don't usually pay much attention to cosplayers' body types but I can't help but think that when you have a second set of boobs under your boobs, you should probably either get a costume that actually fits you or put it away.
>>8966211
Shame because the first boobs look like pretty good boobs. If she got a better suited costume she could get some cosfame on the back of those.
>>8966211
I just unfollowed a page because of her spam.
To be fair I was getting sick of seeing people I dont know but this one took the cake.
>>8965339
well played.
Kara Hook getting arsey with another cosplayer for not correctly crediting a commissioned work.
I'd like to say maybe I'm being catty as perhaps she's grown over the years and changed her outlook but it just seemed painfully ironic.
>>8966328
Haha no. She's commissioned a few costumes lately and posted them as "progress" on her page and privately with no credit to anyone else or anything to say she hasn't made it herself. She never changes, I'd have laughed if I'd seen her sassing someone else too.

>Yorkshire Cosplay Con
Anyone been to this before? I can't find guests on their website.
>>8966328
What's Kara done in the past?
>>8967711
She sold my friend a costume, what was one of her dream costumes. It arrived in a bin bag, and when they opened it there was a god awful smell. The costume was filthy, covered in cat hairs, falling apart and missing pieces that had otherwise been advertised to be part of it that she claimed to have 'gone missing'. Bitch, they could see it'd been unpicked and salvaged for mk 2 or whatever the fuck it was she was working on next.
They even washed the damn thing before sending it back and getting a refund.
>>8967711
Not to mention the infamous 'bought a costume, won the masquerade at (I think) hyper japan, prize was a beautiful sewing machine, sells the sewing machine at full retail price'
She's also sold stuff to cosplayers and never sent it to them. The list is pretty endless.
>>8967711
>>8967728
She gained a reputation for buying or commissioning costumes and then entering competitions passing them off as her own work, as well as selling items and rarely sending them afterwards if at all.
The ironic thing is she was enquiring about a cosplay another cosplayer was selling the other day, when the seller made one of her old Garnet dresses and Kara bitched about the quality and royally pissed everyone involved off.
Plus she has same face, pic related
>>8967737
How much better would she look if she just had some fucking eyebrows? She has no cheekbones, no shape to her face at all. She seems to have learned that blusher is important, but she just pounds on some bright pink Barry M onto the apples of her cheeks. I've seen more features in a ball of dough.
I know MCM gets the most publicity here in the Britbong thread but I wonder if anyone here goes to the events run by Showmasters - y'know, the Collectormanias, the Comic-Cons, the Memorabilias. Becuase they have some really cool stuff at their shows and their guests are way better.
Also Manticore is a sack of shit.
>>8967797

Overcrowding, very poor layout for quest shoots with loads of pinchpoints, oversaturation of said quests so there was just a mass of people queueing badly at all times.

Nice friends you got there! That's some middle school bullshit right there from everyone involved.
If they have a cosplay page for anything other than getting that delicious commission dollar, they're probably a soulless waste of space with no grip on reality.

>>8966328
She's a right arsey cow. I recall a few months ago a Lollipop Chainsaw cosplayer was asking about if she should use her natural blonde hair instead of a styled wig for Juliet Starling. Kara went on about how her hair wasn't 'accurate' to the character and then she posted her own cosplay like she always does. Someone asked about the fact on how she used her own real hair which looked exactly like the other cosplayer's and she never replied. She's the finest of all hypocrites.

>>8970464
Yeah, they opened and closed ages ago. They've said they're not planning to reopen submissions but you can email the events officer if you have something you really want to pitch to them.
Now that we're on the topic, what's the status on Bring & Buy at Ame? Is it possible to ask for an ID yet or are they still preparing for that?
Lucas is charging £250 minimum for cosplay shoots, does anyone know a cosplayer who has that kind of money to spend of a shoot?
>>8970975
Probably people who are not poor
>>8970691
Running a panel would be nice but I don't want to do it alone and I have no freinds who'd want to help me. Anyone run a panel in the past? What's it like?
>>8971076
I've run a couple. I always get really nervous before running them but they always turn out okay, con audiences seem pretty chill in general. Just prepare well, plenty of time in advance, and get a good balance between the stuff you'll say and the stuff you'll put up on your Powerpoint (I find that putting rough headings on your slideshow is the best thing as it gives you a launching point for whatever you need to talk about and means you don't forget things you want to address).
Doing a panel with someone else does take the heat off but make sure the work is distributed evenly or you just end up feeling shitty about the whole thing.
>>8971099
>in 10 years of me going to cons I have still yet to see a single planel that I thought "hey I should go to that"
...The fuck do you even go to conventions?
>>8971112
idk maybe i'm just not fanatically into stuff to the same level as most, I'd rather spend that time socialising
>>8970975
It's £250 if you don't have tits. Notice hes slowly creeping back into the cosplay scene with his tail between his legs after swearing to ditch cosplay shoots because he thinks hes the best. And we all knew the bollocks about him scg is null crap because hes recently started a scg group where photos get posted may get featured on scg page. Now hes asking for inspiration from people whos photographer they like, aka hes going to copy people. Go and use google Lucas you lazy cunt, you already copy all of phlearns videos on youtube so you might as well copy the flavour of the month with your boring headshots.
Lucas is the biggest hypocrite there is. He shot in the carpark, did a piss poor job, none of the cosplayers liked it, threw a strop then posts statuts saying togs should not shoot in the carpark because it's a shit place and if you do you are shit to do so (mostly aimed at Sonesh who does nice photos there). Then he started using lights at expo because he thinks all the togs should do so and not just shoot using natural light. Then he boasts he doesnt need extra light and just use natural light...ermm just like everyone else you said are crap at photography because they're not using extra lights?
He got caught out trying to charge cosplay shoots at a few expo back by the very same photographer who stitched him in but he has no clue about it and is posting their photos in scg.
Hes not going to change, hes back with his ego again because I can now charge for shoots. But reality is hes doing for free because noone is paying him and to be relevent he has to do free shoots. All the cosplay shoots you see him post are all freebies because noone will pay him.
>>8971176
He knows full well no cosplayer will pay him, let alone that price for a shoot when there are so many photographers who don't charge out there now.
>>8971099
Everyone is different. I've seen plenty of panels in the schedules over the years that I've really wanted to attend. And the panels I ran myself were fairly well attended too. Fair enough if it's not your thing specifically but lots of people seem to enjoy the existence of panels. Just look at how much bitching goes on here after cons with relatively empty schedules.
>>8971242
The guys colour blind. A colourblind photographer is as good as a goal keeper with no arms. What he sees is not what we all see. Thats why his photos are never natural looking. All over processed and digitised. Ask him to produce a natural looking photo and he will fail miserably.
>>8971242
He thinks he lives in West Coast in the U.S.
>>8971242
And lets not go into his history of assault on cosplayers. He thinks everyones forgotten about it and is safe to come back. Give it a few month and he'll be posting another status about leaving cosplay for good. He thinks he leads the way for photographers. If they do things differently to him then its wrong but then goes and shoots like everyone else.

I'm a skinny shite and I have the same thing, but I spend all day crouched over a computer and my upper core it pathetic- hence the issue.

sorry if this is a stupid question, but i'm moving to london (i live in the US currently) for uni this fall (i'll be there for all 4 years so it's not just like a semester abroad) and i was wondering what the cosplay scene is like in the UK? what are the best cons? what are the worst cons? are there any particularly bad communities i should stay away from? thanks guys!
I'm going to MCM London in May, it'll be my third time there but first time I'll actually be in the city overnight so I'm interested in what goes on outside the convention centre. What actually goes on at these after-parties, how does one get involved in them, is there anything else outside the con itself socially speaking, etc. etc.
>>8980605
Avoid AnimeLeague events like the plague, they are soooo bad and everyone is a diva. Unfortunately due to the popularity of the major conventions in the UK tickets sell out very quickly, sometimes within an hour of registration opening.
You will almost certainly be able to get to one of the many MCM Comiccon events being held around the country but as you're here for 4 years I'd recommend signing up to the Facebook/Twitter feeds of Kitacon, Amecon and Minamicon in the hope that one year you'll be able to get a ticket for one of them. But for this summer you'll be unlikely to get to anything other than an MCM or small scale local event. What uni are you going to? Perhaps we might be able to recommend something local that's not completely shit, haha.
>>8980605
Addendum: the con season here is Feb-November (if you don't include MCM it's more like March-August) so don't expect anything much from the autumn/winter period of your first year here ;)
How strict do you think the neighbouring hotels for MCM will be after the October rooms ordeal?
>>8981092
The whole bouncer behind a closed door thing asking for keycards and only letting a +1 come with? Was he even working for the hotel or was he just trolling?
>>8981158
Didn't know about that, I meant the knocking on the fact people apparently got kicked out for oversharing rooms. Usually weebs stuffing 8 into a double room.
>>8980966
>>8980605
I really disliked Kitacon the two times I went to it. The parties were average, the con itself was just as bad as the anime league after parties. If I had to choose between the two, I would honestly go to anime league events because the panels are more interesting.
MCM events are expensive but has good guests.
Film and comic cons are over crowded and badly organised.
LSCC would be my favorite con in the. It's like MCM but a lot smaller and more organised.
Personally I would recommend to fly back to the states and go to Dragon Con
>>8981226
AYRT - I must admit, I have never been to Kita for that reason. Prefer panels and chilling
Anyone still need somewhere to stay for MCM? £48 for thursday until sunday at the holiday inn next to excel. Trying to fill up spaces so I don't have to pay a fortune.

i'm going to london college of fashion, so really anything in the general london area i guess. i'm gonna be going to school in hackney and living in finsbury park (???) for specifics. i mean i can get around to other places in the country no problem for cons but if you know of any specific meetups/events around the london area that would be awesome!
>>8980971
are there multiple MCMs? are they all in the same place or are they around the country?
>>8981226
unfortunately dragon con is on the other side of the states and i don't really have anyone to go with, and it's at the same time as PAX prime which is near me and all my friends go to. i wanna make it down there eventually though
All of the MCM guests so far are fucking awful. How many are usually announced? Because it seems to be pretty full of capeshit TV stars and low budget sci-fi actors and I'm worried they are reaching a limit of guests.
>>8981464
You at csm?

>>8982725

>>8981464
Yeah they are everywhere from Belfast to London, October London MCM is the first one after term starts :) Do get to LSCC if you can, have heard nothing but good things about it.
>>8981716
nah, i got offered a place at csm but i liked lcf better because there are more options (not sure if i want to go into design or something else) and a less cut-throat environment.
i usually cosplay video game stuff cos i'm not super into anime, but i recently did plugsuit asuka and am planning to do spike and faye from cowboy bebop with my boyfriend, so i manage to sprinkle in some anime stuff here and there. most of my to-do list is league though because i hate myself
>>8981464 (You)
oh wow, that's awesome! my term starts on september 26 so i could probably put together a couple costumes while i'm still home and wear them to the october one a few weeks later. what's LSCC? you guys have a lot more cons than i thought haha i'm super excited

>League cosplay
moron 100%
Oioi what's all this about some Cardiff pedo, was anyone here at the AL meet?
>>8983281
Why would anyone go to an AL meet?
>>8983248
Except that's a huge misconception because WCS is primarily about performance.
If you can come up with a better skit you will beat them .
>>8983122
Oh well if you cosplay league you're laughing they have a huge meet up at every MCM, check out 'League of Legends Cosplay UK' on Facebook they organise the meets. I cosplay league too but I never make it to meets because I'm usually volunteering
>>8983309
They made it last time.
And cgl will shred anyone who tries to compete against them for daring to compete against them
>>8983318
The "last" time they went for WCS was the first year WCS was running in the UK so I think that's an unfair comparison. They were the only entry that had a set/performance that displayed any sort of understanding of what WCS was about, AND didn't have costumes that fell apart on stage.
>>8983309
^ this
The Secret of Mana group for WCS 2014 had waaaay better costumes than the Tsubasa pair, but the Tsubasa group's performance was way better. WCS is all about performance. Costume doesn't mean shit.
>>8983253
i mean it's under the same university so i can always transfer if i so choose. but when i was talking to the admissions counselor i had my interview with, i decided it would be smarter to go to LCF where i would get a more well rounded education because i don't want to become a broke squatter like gareth pugh
i cant deny that i'm a moron for cosplaying league though lmao
>>8983311
not sure if i really want to associate myself with people who also play league lol (partly because i suck at league, partly because the fanbase is scary) but i'll definitely check it out, thank you!
>>8983371
actually the LoL cosplay community overall is really nice and there seems to be less crazy people. just my observation from hanging around the groups long enough to take photos. inb4 10 replies to this linking dumb drama
>>8983387
Nah, legit the comm is mostly decent, I've met some of them at Worlds and LCS, really nice peeps.
I suck at League too, 'Murican anon - I think if you cosplay you don't have as much time to actually get good at the game XD Seriously you should just go and hang out, at least you actually play league as there's a lot of people who don't! That cosplay group Facebook page organises other meet ups too like they went to winter wonderland in London last year and stuff.
>>8983335
Popoi cosplayer here from that group in 2014 - yes, it's true. The judge feedback to us was that we could have used more of the stage and our costumes lacked 'flow'. My costume had a lot of layers so could have flowed a bit more but I actually had 5 props hidden in the layers including a large Frisbee and a 1.2m long wooden pole with fabric attached. I had to pin the layers together for the performance to prevent them flipping to reveal the hidden props. So that was a bit scuppered, haha. We didn't use the full stage area because we had audio cues to meet - what we should have done was get our set placed closer to the centre so everything was in the middle of the stage. In the video recorded from the judges table it's hard to see what I'm doing with the smaller props due to where I'm standing. The Tsubasa group were much more ambitious with their performance including sugar glass and minor costume changes. But they were finishing their costumes and set the night before the event and they would be the first to admit how sleep deprived and horrendous they felt.
So yeah, WCS is not about how good a costume you make, it's about how your costume looks on stage in the context of your performance. I'd encourage everyone with a good skit idea and a partner to do it to enter. You don't even have to both be good costumers, Lauren made most of Emi's finals costume and fixed up Emi's costume for prelims. We put our skit together and practiced it in just 6 weeks. I was writing about 20 hours of lectures at the same time and flew to Norway the day after prelims to deliver them, haha. We entered because we already had the costumes and a skit idea to try out. It was my first time ever doing a cosplay skit, so I didn't care that we didn't win, I was just relieved that we'd met all our audio cues and it didn't look completely shit. Lauren and Emi were fantastic reps for the UK and deserved the position, but they show prelims are about performance, not costume quality.
>>8983865
As for Lex and Laura entering, who cares? Just fucking go for it, what have you got to lose? We spent less than £40 on props and set for our skit and it was such a fun experience entering. The prelims in 2014 were so goddamn badly organised (and never got the official photos back) that it really put me off entering again, but now MCM have it people should seriously just give it a go. We had great fun during rehearsals too!
>>8983309
Considering they both won ECG I think they know how to perform
>>8983869
This, I hate how people use others entering as an excuse. Just go for it, it's good practice anyway if you want to enter more contests
Trying to encourage people to enter then, who would your dream team for WCS be?
I'd love to do WCS, just for the experience, but I'm thoroughly scuppered by not having a partner to enter with. Guess I'll stick to Eurocosplay.
>>8983924
There's a lot of good performance oriented cosplayers who would be good - CaptainAmelia and HelenAlice, Riddlerule, KhaosKostumes, Moonlily, Darkiekun. Hell, even Street angel could do something decent potentially if they could manage to be drama free.
>>8983947
Do you have eyes? Most of these listed aren't good cosplayers. Not the sort I'd ever want to see representing the UK anyway.
>>8983965
I listed them as good performers or people with a history of being coordinated enough to do decent performances ;)
>>8983966
Well that's nice but whoever goes also needs to look decent. The performance is important for WCS but so is presentation, so sending someone who looks like trash also isn't a good idea.
>>8983986
WCS is a tv show. They want good performance and costumes but also people who look the part and can present themselves well in interviews
>>8983965
Name some you'd like to see then.
>>8983988
Exactly. You need to play up for the cameras and look good, which is why performance is so important for prelims. Judges don't always have time to interview each time so they have to go off what they see on the day and how awkwardly people perform is usually a good indicator.
>>8983989
Sure I'll bite with a few names. Nomes, Isamiaella, PopcornKuma, TheStarlightFairy, MoonLily, Clood, Evo, RossECobb.
>>8983371
I go to LCC and I like to cosplay league too. I go to every MCM as well but I don't really have any cosplay/con friends. Do you wanna chat?

>>8983865
As a huge secret of Mana fan, I loved your costumes and performance!
>>8981572
the VA for Finn from Adventure Time is decent... but other than that it's pretty boring.
There's another group that runs guest signings though and they usually get great Japanese anime guests (they had Shinichiro Watanabe there one time) and western guests, I forgot their name though. Go digging on the website, there's a dedicated section for their guests.
>>8983865
Two years later and still this mad? Damn
>>8984069

>>8983865
All the flavours in the world and you chose to be salt aged for 3 years in a cave
>>8984190
Thanks :D It's a great game!
>>8984640
Nope, actually don't care because it was that long ago. Lauren and Emi did a great job. I was in the final year of my PhD and probably wouldn't have done. We entered because we had the costumes and a skit idea and nothing to lose. That's why people should enter! If you have half decent costumes and a skit idea just go for it.
Should say I've been contacted by one of the judges from back then to tell me 'best in show' didn't actually mean 'best costume' as a result of this thread, so yeah, I guess it was a misconception on my part and that's my bubble burst :( They wanted to emphasise that costume is equally judged, contrary to the impression I went away with that performance was the bigger focus. So yeah.
In spite of all the above I'd still encourage people to enter, it's a great experience!
>>8985340
That's what you think.
>>8983966
But half those cosplayers have little experience with decent performance
>>8985340
All I really wanted was friends.
>>8984687
It's judged 50/50 on costume and performance so both are just as important.
Costume wise whats the best Uni to go in the UK and study design and construction been accepted to all my uni's having a real dilemma? sorry its off subject
>>8987401
Why would you ever think it's a good idea to ask /cgl/ for advice on anything remotely serious?
>>8981301
I'm thinking about organising some shit but only if other gulls are into it.
>>8987401
Where did you apply?
>>8988269
Bournemouth art ' Royal Central ' LCF and St Martins
>>8988408
LCF hands down is the place to go to. You must be very experienced/lucky to get into there so I would take the opportunity.
St Martins is good as well.
>>8988408
Go to St Martins and you've got a job anywhere. Didn't know they did costume though.
>>8988498
>Finding meaningful employment after leaving uni
>>8981301
I've foolishly signed up for the cosplay competition that will be judged. Hoping to do an Utena gown based off the blu-ray box set art.
>>8987401
i'm going to LCF this year (same anon as earlier) and their costume program is amazing. it's pretty hard to get in (20% acceptance i think?) but if you can, their costume program is really nice. CSM if you can get in (it's more like 5% acceptance) and want to only do theatre (their costume course is through their drama program so you'll be with the theatre students as opposed to the fashion students)
>>8988498
CSM has a drama program with a costume design degree, i don't think they have a costume design degree within the fashion program
Was anyone at Granite City or Play Expo or whatever else was on over the weekend?
Anything exciting happen?
>>8989282
was at insomnia scotland, there were about 10 mediocre cosplayers all weekend. nothing of interest to note really.
I am going to London as an XCOMs. Keep your eyes out for me.
>>8990269
Wearing an olive jump suit with some patches ironed on to it.
Good job. Well done. F-
>>8990370
I've actually got a proper rigging setup, kneepads, helmet, gloves, and a flak vest that looks like the newer XCOM one, but I didn't show them off because I'm not done with the detailling (grime, slogans) yet.
Obviously you have no fucking idea about XCOM though, otherwise you'd know about pic related. It's a double-homage costume.
>>8990480
It's clearly grey.
>>8990525
It's actually a dark brownish-tan judging by the other colors used in the game (it has an off-color style). I could've gotten a closer color, but I also couldn't find a decent lookalike flak vest that would've matched well with tan, so I went with an olive-green jumpsuit.
It also made finding a helmet and elbow/kneepads along with rigging easier. Worst comes to worst I just look like some sort of German insurgent rather than an XCOM.
>>8990532
I can't wait to bully your ass irl.
>>8990704
Sperg alert.
>>8990718
Really though. If you're just gonna show up and maybe make a few bantery digs about my costume then w/e, I can have a laugh.
It's just if you're gonna come be all autistic and harrass me then then I'll have to get con security.
>>8990480
You better have a wig for that hair
>>8990726
I've decided I'm just going to go with a real hair crew-cut since I need to get my hair cut anyway, and pulling off that hair is outside of my expertise. It won't look as authentic, but I'll be wearing a helmet most of the time.
With all my gear on, my costume basically looks like pic related, but more beat-up and worn out. I added patches and shit to the jumpsuit beneath since I figure I'm not gonna wear a flak vest all day in London the middle of May. Might even just go without the vest on the Sunday.
I was thinking -- should I get some softened cardboard to pad out my vest in place of the actual kevlar, or would it not look as authentic
as the real plates?
>>8990720
Is this your first event?
>>8990748
Second, although I don't really remember my first because I got lost in London on the way and ended up spending only like two hours at MCM itself.
This time I'm coming with a couple of mates and know what to expect & that I should bring water, though.
>>8990720
I'm going to cosplay as a Ethereal and just fuck with your head all day.

There's one in liverpool next month but i dunno if its gonna be huge.

Sounds like you want to fuck off to Poland
>Avoid AnimeLeague events like the plague, they are soooo bad and everyone is a diva.
This is not disputed in any way. Personal experience as a 'crew member'. I even wrote a pathetic post about them on my blog, with credible sources from former workers, and I have a ban from all of their events. It's their loss.
>unfortunately dragon con is on the other side of the states and i don't really have anyone to go with, and it's at the same time as PAX prime which is near me and all my friends go to. i wanna make it down there eventually though
I go every year, and I'm always blown away on what them crazy Americans can make.

I'm very friendly with the Toko committee, and as far as I know they have no immediate plans for mass expansion.
They needed the new site cos the former camp owners didn't want them back. The only things they have mentioned (in terms of 'expansion') so far is the partial payment system they set up (which has worked wonders for me), and that they're thinking about a food van. That's all......so far.

Majority in shitty scifi, TV capeshit B-Movies, very few actual comic guests, almost no voice actors for games, tv, or anime, and no anime guests in general.

>>8997399
That's a shame. I went to the first one they ever ran so I was hoping the second would perhaps begin to have some better attendance.
Judged it harshly when I was unfortunate enough to overhear an "anime you should watch" panel. It was all shit like Attack on Titan, Bleach, Inuyasha, and they were wanking them hard.

>>8997668
If you're in cosplay then yes, you *need* makeup. Take it from someone who hates the stuff and never normally wears it. Nicely applied makeup is that final bit of polish that sets the look off. You can have the nicest costume in the world but if you don't wear makeup with it, it just looks like a waste. If someone wants to be good enough to call themselves a cosplay guest, that's basic shit they should already know.

Why the hate towards Anime League events? It guess the people running it might be cunts, but I went to Alcon two years ago and it was great, I met lots of great people and had a lot of fun.
I guess if you're just in a Con to see the most elaborate costumes and see all the industry stuff MCM is far better, but the atmosphere at Alcon was better IMO.
