Why can't a westerner make resin accessories as cute as the ones in the OP post? I would buy the shit out of them.

Optimized-mold pieces.jpg

I got to use some new molds last week! I've never worked with glitter before, so that was a bit of a learning process. I think the big diamond one turned out best- I figured out that I had to do any colored pieces in two layers to keep the glitter or powder from sinking to the bottom. The left rectangular frame was cast in two layers- I used copper metallic powder for it, but it turned out kinda brownish. The right one was my first attempt, and it's sort of cloudy from being cast in one layer. The heart frame on the right is a bit less pearlescent from being cast in two layers, but it's brighter and more sparkly. Any tips are appreciated; this was a fun experiment!
>>
>>8939295
They usually require the use of UV resins, which are much more expensive for us due to the small volume and the cost of shipping them.

http://creamyribbon.theshop.jp/

Her stuff is only sold in Japan right now and almost impossible to get a hold of online. They sell out super duper fast online, it's easier to get if you go to craft fairs/events she sells at.
>>
>>8939488
Those look really cute! I haven't received any of my frames yet, but I plan on experimenting with eyeshadow. If I have any failures, I'll just paint over them with some gold acrylic stuff. For now, I'm just arranging little forest scenes inside some thick cabochons with stickers so they'll look sort of like a pop-up book. It's mostly just mushrooms and little anthropomorphic fungus and forest animals so far.
>>
For coloring, what's given you the brightest most saturated colors?
>>
>>8939576
No wonder it's impossible. Thank you.

Anyone have any ideas on where you can buy little metal pieces like what this girl puts on her resin rings? And metal keys where she puts the resin in the middle? I'd love to try and mimic making keys similar to this if I could find the materials.

They're all over the place on eBay. What I do is search for something like Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura, set it to free shipping and under $2, and you'll just get pages of things like OP's pic and pic related.

I was looking for more like pic related but now that I look closer the gold color on the key and heart above the key are different. So your recommendation helps a lot, thank you.

I'm a bit lost where to get something like the golden circle and the kind of curly golden bit under the heart. Those aren't really anime related and not sure where to find something like that at a michaels or online.
>>
Just wondering if anyone has used fly-fishing UV resin for jewelry? I can't imagine it's super different, but maybe it melts things?

If not, recommendations for UV resins? (since there are none in the doc)
>>
>>8939618
I have a feeling the gold background may be a sticker anon
>>
>>8939618
Those are made with various metal findings which are stacked/glued on to each other. Maybe Aliexpress, ebay, or taobao can be your best platforms to find something like these.
>>
>>8939623
Behind the circle? I see clear resin and some metal pieces stuck in the resin though.

>>8939625
I thought so but not sure what specific searches would be good, I always have to be so specific on aliexpress. Maybe stuff like little metal heart or something would work. Thank you though.
>>
>>8939619
Not sure about melting but according to this site, http://globalflyfisher.com/tie-better/light-curing-resins there's no heat with it.
>>
>>8939642
Transparent stickers aren't really new, that's why I was thinking they were those. If they're from the same person as >8933018 in the last thread it seems like she uses transparent stickers or cut outs. (either way it's a similar end look)

>>8939657
Thanks for your google-fu! I was just thinking that there are a LOT of fishing stores here, but not a lot of big craft stores. I was thinking of wandering around and pricing UV resins that I can access locally by their size and type, and didn't realise that they use them in fly fishing. I was also looking at more industrial resins to buy in large quantities. I'm cheap, but if there's an inexpensive and local option I'd rather take it -- shipping is generally a bitch to where I live.

Also that cute soft resin could make for some interesting little charms. Wasn't there an anon looking for a resin to use for gummy bears a few threads back?

So anon, when resin is first setting, it's kinda cloudy, especially if it has something mixed into it. It's okay if you get confused, resin is pretty complicated.

Why is there always one faggot in any given thread who feels like they need to be this edgy? It's obviously counter to /cgl/s general board 'culture', so I really don't understand.

Do you think that they act this way in real-life social situations?
>>
>>8939881
It's actually half-cured and fairly clear. The mold itself is just semi-opaque.
Bought it from here, if anyone was curious.

I know how to make the silicone ones, but how would I go about making those clear plastic molds?
>>
>>8939488
You're right to work in layers. You could use a nail art brush or cocktail stick to very carefully paint the lines on the diamond and rose ones, with nail polish, to make them stand out more. Do a couple of thin layers, wait until it's bone dry, and pour the resin in. When you pop it out it should come out in one piece with no flaking or anything.
>>
>>8939969
I'm guessing they are vacuum formed plastic
>>
>>8939258
Thanks anon! You have good taste.
>>
Yikes, this thread.

So has anyone worked with the 'soft' fishing resin mentioned in >>8939657 ? I'm wondering how soft it is and what they mean by 'blue' light (LED/UV? It can't be anything else, right?)
>>
>>8940411
The blue light seems to be one of two different types- they mentioned that the resins cure under UV or blue light. I'm going to order some bug bond or something soon though, it sounds interesting.
>>
>>8939851
This is super cute but the plastic is so visible on the finished piece.
>>
>>8940804

>>
>>8941300
Sage for samefagging but I would assume they didn't because they posted in the last resin thread and mentioned the stickers shuffling around. In UV resin there isn't much time for the stickers to move since it cures so quickly.

If you don't like hamsters and shrooms, I just got pic related and some alice in wonderland stickers in today, and am waiting on a lot more, like little Tottoros, perfume bottles, princesses, cats in halloween costumes, etc. Ordered a /lot/ of stickers. There are a lot of dream pieces of mine that involve mushrooms and woodland creatures, and I'm sure there's a happy little niche of lolitas that like that kind of thing too.

>>8941283
Thanks! I'm going to give a lot of my things away to others in the comm as I make them (or hopefully trade some with each of you that are into accessory making)
I bought a vendor table for a spring market at the end of April, so I'm trying to make as much as I can along the way!

>>8941307
>>8941300
I wish I did, it'd probably work a lot better. I'm actually just starting out with resin crafts (thanks to inspo from all of the awesome crafters in this general and my comm) so I figure I'd begin with the cheap 2-part stuff. (I'm tempted by the Padico UV, but it's super expensive.)

But, that aside, I know that there are several people here that only come for certain threads, like makeup/hair, LARP and resin. Not to mention the western animation boards.

I mean, I know you're trolling, but I guess I responded to your b8, so like at least a 2/10 for effort.

Worth it. I thought it was random selection. but it comes with all 6 different sheets per pack.
I ordered about 4 packs. Only gripe is that they're somewhat transparent, so it could use white backing.
>>
>>8941364
Where did you purchase your stickers? I am looking through aliexpress but I think I am not using the right terms to find good stickers like yours.
>>
>>8941431
Searching stationary and stickers, and oftentimes the words "seal flakes" helps a lot. Got those here, and a lot of others from their store. But there are a lot of stores with interesting stickers all over the place. It's pretty fun to wade in the sea of results and find something that you really like.

I'm using amazing casting resin, the kind that cures FAST and opaque. I'm pretty new but I love this mold. The roses on the right are my failed attempts at getting both a color I like and getting it out of the mold in time to fit an eye pin in. The left is my rough draft for a necklace I'm making for a coord.
Anyone else using this resin? I like how fast it cures but the opacity makes it hard to get colors I want (unless I shell out for the specific pigments)
>>
>>8942078
The first few times, probably, but after 2 or 3 tries you should be able to know what you did wrong and how to fix it. Resin is pretty intuitive. Just remember to do everything in layers and suddenly it starts making sense.
Be prepared to have it go everywhere and waste some resin at first. Fuckups are par for the course no matter what you make, so don't get discouraged.
Also, post the results if you do it, we can help you with any issues you have.
>>
>>8942100
Go on Google and type 'resin tutorial' and click through them. Then pick the ones that most match your style, look through that person's other tutorials, and make something.

>>8942213
It's worth a try but I don't know if it'll cure properly.
>>8942198
What did you use to color these? Was it acrylics, by any chance?
>>
>>8942198

You need a slower casting resin. Fast curing resin leaves behind many bubbles hence why your roses are so bubbly.
>>
>>8942281
Actually most of the problem I had was taking the resin out of the mold too soon to try and get the pin in, so it got deformed before it cured all the way. That's what happened with the pink one at least. But if I keep having problems with it I'll definitely look into slower curing.

>>8942280
I used eyeshadow. I also used some chili powder in the orangey one just as an experiment haha
>>
>>8942198
I'm thinking about getting some fast casting resin for sort of mass producing frames that I plan to paint over.
>>
>>8942285
>chili powder
That was incredibly stupid but it made me laugh so hard.
Also, try mixing the resin into the eyeshadow bit by bit to make sure it's all mixed in properly and not lumpy. Using something thicker than a cocktail stick and a mixing cup strong enough to withstand a lot of scraping would be ideal.
As for the pin, if you want to attach it to the middle of the back, like an earring post, either put it in when the resin's super tacky but not set and babysit it for a couple of hours or use a blob of resin/glue when it's cured. If you want it on the top and don't want to deform your pieces either drill a hole in and use glue or glue it on with resin and dome the back (first option is better).
>>
>>8942350
I was frantically trying anything to get a deep red color haha. I went shopping and got some more eyeshadow colors so hopefully I'll get a little closer than dusty pink or barf orange.

Thanks for the mixing tips!

And I am going to get a drill eventually but don't have money set aside for it and a respirator atm. So the doming option sounds good. Thank you!!!

I'm unsure how to phrase this in Google so I'll try asking here. If I wanted to make pins in the style of Pepfox or Mulberry Chronicles where it's an illustration with resin domed on top, I know I have to seal the image in ModPodge or tape, but what on earth do I put on the other side of the image that I'm not doming with resin? Like, to make it completely flat but protected?
>>
>>8942719
Dome it as well but make it flat, a white background would be good since it will make it look nicer.
>>
>>8942726
link to archive of that?
>>
I got a bunch of tiny book lockets and want to put little domed covers on them. Aside from Grimoires, Bibles and Alice in Wonderland, are there any other lolita-ish books that people might want?
>>
>>8942783

Instead of strictly lolita, you could go straight to the fandom stuff like CCS's book, FMA spellbooks, Harry Potter-themed stuff -- I don't think Ginny's journal will be popular, but maybe the monster book with some polymer clay tentacles sticking out would be fun.

For lolita, instead of doing a book, why not do a meaningful quote? Like the poem about what it means to be a lolita that everyone likes to repost in the old school threads. You could do a Mana quote with a gothic-style background for the gothic lolitas, I think it's translated in one of the earlier English GLBs. Something like that.
>>
>>8942719
Dome it but with less resin. Unless you want it to be kinda see through paint it with white acrylic first.
Painting the back with white acrylic also seems to work pretty well for hiding water damage (obviously doesn't work for embedded pieces).

honestly if a westerner made this accessory with the cost of import for materials plus a reasonable fee for how long they would take to make. They would be hella expensive.
>>
>>8943633
...What are you talking about? The UV resin would be expensive but it's not like you need the whole bottle. Everything else is pretty cheap and you can find most if not all the components on eBay.
The accessory wouldn't be super cheap, but it would hardly be expensive.

Just caught a bit of the resin bug looking at these threads so decided to try my hand at it. These are my practice pieces and would like some feedback or suggestions. They're messy I admit but still practicing. The top ones are my first pieces (accidentally broke one) with the bottom being more recent. The stars are lucky star origami that I coated in resin.
>>
>>8943984

that bottom right pink one with the flowers, ugh i love it
>>
>>8943633
They're already expensive in Japan. 6000-8000 yen for a necklace... yikes. It's not unreasonable considering the material + labour costs, but still.

>>8943984
These look great, especially for a first time! What did you put in the middle bottom one? I like the textured look.
>>
>>8943985
>>8944016
Thanks guys!

The textured look is from using layers of UV resin and mica powders. I'm trying to replicate it with normal resin (since the uv stuff is expensive) but seems I have to wait till it gets a little thicker to achieve the same effect.
>>
>>8943984
>>8943985
Seconding that. It's gorgeous!

>>8944042
I really want to invest in UV resin when I get more learned in general.
>>
>>8943984
These are so nice! I really like the effect of the caviar beads and the glitter, it looks amazing.
If you keep having problems with bubbles with the flowers, you could work backwards. Glue them onto the resin with more resin, carefully pour in thin layers until they're almost covered, pour resin in the middle of the flowers and dome the piece. Unless you're using fresh flowers, in which case the bubbles might be because of that.
>>
>>8944336
Thanks so much!

I'll try to be better with the layers and do what you said, thank you for the advice. The flowers are already dried ones from nail art supplies.
>>
>>8944349
You might want to coat the flowers in resin before using them, that can help reduce bubbles. Using UV resin to glue the coated flowers/beads in place and pouring the 2-part resin in while it's thin will also help a lot, since the bubbles will be a lot easier to remove and the piece won't need babysitting.
These are seriously good first pieces, just so you know.
>>
>>8942902
Is this just a domed printout? The letters look super pixelated.
>>
>>8944868

I'm not really sure, actually. Just a random pic off google.
>>
>>8944336

different anon but I would advise against fresh flowers. I haven't personally tried it but I was researching into it.

Basically fresh flowers contain moisture, which is a no-no with resin already. Also if there is any oxygen/airbubbles trapped by the flower it can decay it over time.

You can still try it ofc, but dried flowers will always be less finicky since they contain no moisture and dont run the risk of rotting inside your resin.
>>
>>8945317
I made the mistake of using fresh flowers once. I was freaking out at the bubbles and it was only after four or five failed flower experiments that I realized that maybe it wasn't the best idea.
>>
Noob question(sorry): if I want to make my toy could I use tutorials from google doc?
>>
>>8945865
Are its head/arms going to be articulated? If so, you're going to have to have separate molds for them. Are you planing on making those tiny flowers on their head resin too? Because I don't think that'll work out very well.

Rwgardless, the tutorials in the op are mainly for small resin stuff with simple shapes that wren't very 3d. Tutorials for making larger items with resin would probably be more of what you're looking for.
>>
>>8946016
that`s not mine figure, just an example.
I just wonder if this straw method will work with something bigger. People in figure tutorials always have something something vacuum and I don`t
>>
>>8945865
This is gonna be a lot more complicated than most of the stuff in this thread.
First off, you're going to have to make the toy, or get a toy that's going to be relatively easy to pull apart and won't stain. Then you need to pull it apart and cast the mold. If you want to make it in a solid colour and paint over it later one mold will do but if not you'll need to make several molds, and you'll need to use liquid silicone, not putty. Then comes the joy of sanding, touching up the toy, and putting it all together.
I don't think you should attempt it if you're a noob simply because you'd waste so much time and resin if you fuck up the ratio or if you get a million bubbles. Play with resin for a bit, get a feel for it, and learn to cast your own molds from liquid silicone before you do this. Resin and silicone last a long time and go a long way, so you won't have to pour a fuckton of cash into it, but it's worth waiting until you know what you're doing before you waste a load of product.
I don't think there are 3D silicone mold tutorials in the doc but I know there are several on Youtube. I know casting resin in a vacuum can apparently reduce the bubbles but it's not really necessary- just pour the resin in slowly while it's super runny and keep coming back to pop the bubbles at the top and you should be fine.
>>
>>8945865

No we haven't really discussed this and there aren't many resources in the doc. I've slightly looked into it myself and I really just recommend youtube/google to find some answers.

I'm not sure -how- useful this tidbit could be but I know there is a BJD thread on /toy/. I lurk to read drama (i dont actually collect) and there is a girl who is molding and casting her own resin doll. It might be worth it google around for information of casting/creating dolls as well. Or you could also ask them over there in the thread if anyone is experienced.

I'm wondering about the star ones. The shaft of those seems to be almost purely resin. Wouldn't that be very very fragile? I'd be terrified they would break in a matter of days.
Did they use some sort of reinforcement or is uv resin just that strong...?
>>
>>8939618
>>8939625

>>8939619
I've used surfboard coating UV resin.

It cures extremely hot when exposed to UV and yellows like nobodies business unfortunately.

It's almost impossible to remove air bubbles from it when using a lighter because the resin itself just catches on fire.
>>
>>8947163
I assume they'd be pretty careful with these pieces because they're kind of expensive as >>8944016 said. That being said, they might have domed the piece a few times for a bit of added strength, because UV resin isn't any stronger than normal resin as far as I can tell.
>>
>>8947384
>Yellows
>Resin literally catches fire
Yikes, I hope you didn't spend too much on it.
>>
>>8947392
I think it was around $22 a pint (minus shipping)
So it's not toooo expensive
>>
>>8947384
Please tell me you didn't get injuries from this.
>>
>>8947689
I didn't.

Also the brand of resin was Solarez by Wahoo. (It's not the super thin kind, but under the crafts and casting category.)

What's weird is that this resin when UV cured, it doesn't cure right. But you do have the option of curing it with a hardener too.

Also the resin itself gives off EXTREMELY strong fumes. I tried this stuff out to find a brand that's domestic (USA based) and a little bit cheaper than buying Padico stuff.

I guess I should just spend a little more for Japanese UV resins since they hold true to curing fine under UV and that they smell substantially less.......

I think it's still called beading. I don't think there's a term for that specific technique in English, annoyingly enough. They're using eye pins and chaining them together. It's a pretty standard technique. It's a little finnicky at first but you get better at it really fast. I find it fun but it's heavy on the hands so I can't make many necklaces in a row.
I wouldn't know if there are sellers that sell that as is. That's a pretty good question!
>>
>>8950971
Let us know how that goes! I wish I had that kind of spare dosh to blow. But I did make one sale today in my shop. And a tentative local one later tonight. I see a lot of UV resin tutorials using nail lamps and small UV light torches when working with little increments layers. I don't imagine it has to be overly powerful. The items looked a bit cheap. Doesn't hurt to try a small torch for $3 off amazon or something before you invest in something else expensive.

It's basically as >>8950977 said.
You need some round nose pliers and some eye pins. It's tricky to get right and it can seem tedious at first, but eventually you'll get it down so don't get discouraged. I think I HAVE seen chains being sold on aliexpress but I think it's more rewarding to make it yourself. Plus you learn the skill.

nicely done! looks like the big rose charm has a bubble on top. supposedly if you coat detailed components in resin before putting them into the mold, it reduces the chances of bubbles getting caught.
>>
>>8951240
>But since it's by hand, I wonder how much should I price necklaces with this style of beading.
i struggle with this. this is what i figured out: in time, you will get better AND faster. i realized my newer handbeaded pieces were priced lower than my older, less polished handbeaded pieces, because of the time difference alone.

so when you calculate, keep in mind that the time you take as a beginner is much longer than the time you will take a year or two from now. however you factor this into your pricing is up to you. i am honestly unsure how to account for it. i think i may give myself a "raise" of my per hour rate, like a little promotion since i have become more effecient.
>>
>>8951299
No resin expert, but coating things with detail with definitely reduce the chance of bubbles. The rose piece looks like it has raised edges and a bevelled inside, meaning more surface area, aka. microcorners for the air to stay when the item is submerged and then, while the resin sets, it sort of pushes together all those tiny bubbles and creates a larger one. A thin, doming layer definitely helps even out that bumpy surface.

More surface area = more everything. Bacteria, air, water etc.

Speaking of bacteria, does anyone sterilise items before putting them in resin? I've heard stories (mostly about plants that haven't been dried) going into resin and moulding/cracking the resin with anaerobic bacteria gas and I'm wondering if this has ever happened on any other embedded items that are natural, like rocks, shells, etc. for anyone?

I just use a normal nail lamp and it works great.
I'd say what you need to look out for are bubbles, accidentally exposing it to UV light before it's ready to cure, and the usual problems with dust and things.
Bubbles are an absolute bitch to get rid of because the resin's so thick, warming it a little and pouring it in really thin layers seems to be the best way to eradicate the damn things.
If you're embedding things, work in super thin layers. Make a thin base layer, cure it, use a dab of resin to stick the stuff down, cure it, and so on. It takes longer but you get way better results.
>>
>>8952680
It should say on the package if they can be used underwater. I just use a nail file and it works fine, so I assume the sanding part would work underwater but the sponge part might get moldy or something.

Like the other anon said the bottom left are great. I made an "oooh" noise. It would be nice to see that technique in more molds when you get them. I like those and the white personally but others would probably be interested in purchasing the different colours.
Also I think the organised ombre suggestion would make the bottom right nicer to look at. The blue is a bit too heavy on the upper feathers if that makes sense. Either try the tier effect or try to make the gradient even more gradual.
>>
>>8953326
Thank you!
>>8953400
I could try that but I have trouble getting the resin to not run everywhere with two colors already, should I be waiting for the resin to become thicker before pouring them?

A bracelet like >>8951090 shouldn't take you more than an hour once you've got the technique down. Probably more like half an hour. The necklace in >>8950819 will take much longer because there's around four times as many beads. If you need the necklace to be beaded all around, I'd say it's wise to look into buying it ready-made. When I make necklaces I only bead close to the pendant, like pic related. That's not even half as many beads per necklace. Works well for necklaces with one pendant, not so much for multiple smaller charms like the moonbunny one.

You use alcohol based inks or resin pigments to colour the resin and leave it translucent, powders or resin pigments if you want a solid colour. You can also do a layer of clear resin and a much smaller layer of coloured resin.
As for the molds PLEASE CHECK THE PLASTIC. Resin can melt that shit. Also, use mold release. If you don't, you will not be getting the resin out. There are very similar resin-specific molds for cheap online that I'd recommend using, because palettes are super flimsy.
>>
>>8953434
Mix the colours and wait for the resin to become slightly thicker before pouring if you want to do an ombre effect. Don't wait too long or it'll be thick enough to trap all the bubbles.
These look really great, by the way.
>>
I've just seen some reviews for this new clear cast resin. Apparently it's very fast to set (but slightly slower to cure) and the shine/ clarity is superb. http://www.elichem.co.uk/p-24-totalcast-clear-artwork-resin.aspx

How did you get the colour effects
Did you use a certain tutorial or just wing it?

They are lovley BTW
>>
>>8954639
Thanks very much!

The colours I just winged it using mica powders and UV Resin. Mica powders (at least the ones I got) have a shimmer to them so when you stir it you can create wispy effects and mix separate colours then I mixed them loosely together. It is easier with UV resin since it is thicker and you can set it really fast using UV lights. I am struggling a bit with 2 part resin a bit but practice makes perfect I guess.
>>
How would you go about replicating the iridescent effect in the OP? >>8939241

I'm thinking a thin layer of resin, then some iridescent nail wrap foil - I was considering cellophane as I suspect it will "thin" in contact with resin, but I can't be sure.

The other option is to rub it onto the finished piece and then varnish/dome to protect it.
I've googled it but haven't found many results.

The blue is actually a lot more blended in the left piece, but it's even starker in the right one for some weird reason. I'll try blending it more.
>>
Newbie question but how do you get the ombre coloring IN the resin?
>>
>>8956614
You need to divide the resin into parts, mix the resin with something to color it, then very carefully pour it into the mold. You can also add the coloring into the resin after pouring but I don't recommend it, it's too likely to be lumpy (if you're using powders) or run into the non-colored part (if it's liquid or you're too enthusiastic). It takes a bit of time to get right but it's easy once you learn when to pour and how much resin/pigment to add.
>>
>>8956681

Do you have any powders you would recommend?
>>
>>8956708
I use glow in the dark powders, eyeshadow and pastels. You need to really mix them in super well because that shit gets super lumpy. I take a couple of new cups and put the powder in, then mix it with enough resin to make a paste and slowly add more in, let it sit for a bit to let the bubbles rise and mix it every so often if it's a heavy powder that tends to sink (like glow in the dark powder).
>>
>>8956750
I like to mix the powders separately before I add them to the resin, so that they become super fine and lumps don't occur.
>>
>>8953320
I have this same mold, and whenever I use it the feathers come out with little craters in them, what am I doing wrong?
>>
>>8943984
Anon if you are still here, can you tell me on how you coated the paper stars? It is a really cute idea!
>>
>>8956900
small details allow for tiny bubbles to form, these sorta pull together to make larger holes
paint the details with a thin level of resin first, then fill the mould
>>
tip: when doing two-layer charms, don't demold until you have completed the second layer. i demolded mine after the first layer had cured because of anxious curiosity to see if they had turned out all right. i replaced them into the molds and did the second layer, which leaked below the first, cured layer.

i am going to try to scrape the leakage off and dome the fronts which will hopefully fix the issue. bummed that i did not realize the molds would not remain airtight once the seal was broken.
>>
>>8956708
use the soft pastels from daiso! they work really great and come in a lot of colors.
>>
>>8957172

>>
>>8957186

>>
I've read everyone's tips on creating ombre pieces, but I still can't get the colors to blend softly, or they make weird shapes from me trying to mix them together. I've been using a toothpick and tried making back and forth motions and circles to blend. Any advice?
>>
>>8956248
I know you did these without 'official' moulds, so I'll just crit the colouring. LOVE the middle one, and the right one is nice too. Far left feels very generic, right is probably your most unique (colour wise) but the middle is probably the most saleable. I think you could sell if you applied middle's colour to far right's gem shape.

>>8957186
>>8957192
Get a tobacco grinder for super-fine stuff. I know the knife works, but if you want zero lumps, a grinder is a dream.

For those of you who put pictures in frames, how do you seal the paper? I've used modpodge, and found it to be annoying.

>>8957288
I did some experimenting when I first got my glossy photo paper (Epson) and attempted doming. I use mod podge as well. When both of my examples dried, I was shocked to find that mod podge had caused more bubbles, and a somewhat noticeably streaky film from the brush strokes. I was also suprised to find that the unsealed paper had no discolouration or distortion from direct contact with the resin. It's still necessary to hold in the resin, though. This is how I go about it.

I apply mod podge around the edges of the back of the frame. (But not the inner edges)
Then I press the image against the back, and adjust as necessary until it's right where I want it lined up.
It might smear a bit around the inner edges of the images, but since it dries clear, it's not that big of a deal.
After that, I glob on mod podge over the back. Making sure everything is sealed, especially around the corners. Bigger globes can help with uneven edges, but will take longer to dry.
Wait for all of it, front -and- back to be perfectly dry and clear. I leave them face down at this point.
Flip 'em over and pour the resin into the inner frame, and all of the mod podge edges are invisible. Even if they aren't, you'll only have an issue on a small edge that no one is going to notice, as opposed to a big streaky mess all over.
>>
>>8956915
I skewered them with wire them applied pva glue all over them. It was a fiddly job especially trying to keep any rogue flaps down but it is worth it.

I just paint them on and then seal with a glossy acrylic spray (like was discussed above!) If you want to add details on the front of pieces once they've cured, definitely look at sprays. Re-doming over already slick resin is such a pain in the ass.

Is there any way to fix the holes the bubbles left? Overall, I'm pretty happy with how these turned out, most of them came out better than I expected!

resin newbie here, why do you have to let it thicken first?
>>
>>8958901
The glitter will all settle in one flat layer if the resin is thin. When it thickens the glitter can be mixed in and remain distributed all through the piece. At least this is what I've noted?
>>
>>8958822
These look really cool! How many layers did it take to paint the silhouettes?
>>8958824
Dome them. They're super cute by the way.
>>8958901
Everything sinks to the bottom otherwise. It's also not good to leave it to get too thick because then the glitter doesn't sink in or spread and it's a pain to fix; wait until it's viscous and tacky but not until it's stringy.
>>
>>8958987
The resin is one whole piece (with glitter mixed in and some on the bottom) with the silhouettes painted on top and then domed, but I'm hoping to try more layers in the future! I still have to dome the backs of them. I'm thinking like...going split gradient using the characters typical color scheme for it..
>>
>>8958897
>>8958987
The problem is that the bubbles are in the corners and the sides of the star so I don't think I can just dome them? Maybe I'll fill them in with something.

Enamel is mildly corrosive, yes. It'll eat away at the resin slowly over time.

Related protip: If you don't have nailpolish remover on hand, put another coat of polish on and it'll lift the old one away to wipe off.
>>

You can fix watermarks with doming, though it's a nuisance.

also as far as I know it won't, but that's only from googling and looking through some page about resin and aquariums. If no one really knows, you best bet is just to test it.

I'm really happy I found out last night that two of the molds I wanted from her were just recasts from an ice cube tray. Feels good.

Speaking of Ice trays, I found pic related and think the UFOs are pretty cute. However, I'm worried about well well it'd attach to things? Like I could always put a bail on the bottom and have it sideways, but I want it rightside up. The only ways I could tink of for that would be using a bead cap, which would cover more than I'd like unless it was really small, or drilling an eyepin through the top, which would show through if I made it transparent.
Do any of you guys know of a better solution?
>>
>>8963320

Pins aren't all that visible. If you want to add a bead cap instead you can always trim it down to size.
Also, wow, that is one hell of a level of lazy. Maybe she thought nobody would notice if she didn't literally sell cutout bits of ice cube tray.

That's not how I'd go about it purely because you can distort the piece. If it's soft enough to shove a screw into, it's soft enough to bend. E6000 and a drill will secure it just as well and won't ruin the piece.

>>
>>8967853
Make smaller batches, or separate your one batch into smaller beakers immediately after mixing.
There's really no way around it - the chemical reaction causes internal heat, which in turn fuels the curing reaction. More resin = more heat.

So...I spilt some glitter and decided to add some to a piece I was doming.(dress part) I was wondering if this was the ideal way to add glitter to pieces, or would it be better to paint some on in a modpodge layer before doming even begins? Wondering if the depth of the glitter or having it all in one plane would make it look better or worse.

Doesn't really matter, you can paint it on if you want it to be neater (if you wanted to put glitter on the edges only, for example) but if you want it to have more depth adding it when you're doming works better.
