Sidenote, does anyone know what happened to Kathrine Zan? She used to sell patterns and accessories and is one of my favorite SM cosplayers but all her social media has been inactive since around late August of last year, if not earlier, and customers haven't gotten their orders.
She's been selling those things for a fairly long time so I don't think it's some scam. I'm worried something bad might have happened?

I used their tutorial for my Halloween costume and loved it! I feel it was fairly easy to follow and the results were clean and accurate.

Relevant: Zan's fuku pattern is a fucking mess, you'll feel that wiping your ass with 50 bucks would have been more worth it. Stick with the Cupcakes free tutorial

I last saw her at the AX 2015 Sailor Moon gathering event. That's a month before her last activity. I believe she's based in the east coast, so she had to travel to be at AX.

Maybe she took a cosplay hiatus or retreat. But I did notice that the FB posts about her not mailing out the patterns is certainly concerning, especially since she had just released that sailor fuku pattern.

I've been trying to get a group to do some of the villains myself,
I usually cosplay neptune/pluto but I've started an Esmeraude cosplay ( just have the jewelry to do,) and I've been trying for 2 years to get a witches 5 group together.

I just really want to cosplay eudial, but I never find a group to do it with/never know whether to make the anime gun + fire buster or the manga witches wand thing.

I'm so iffy with Neptune because wig colors. I feel like most girls pick a wig that's too blue, too green, etc. Never a shade in the middle. Doesn't help that the art is so inconsistent throughout the series.

With Uranus it's a matter of how femme they are. I feel like the more feminine the cosplayer, the less I like them as Uranus. I'm a slut for Haruka though so of course I'm picky.

My issues with Neptunes are almost always the styling of the wigs rather than the shade. Her hair changes colours in the artbooks and anime based on lighting, season, and all kinds of shit. So I'm a bit more forgiving there. But with the styling, people either skip the fact that she does in fact have a wavy fringe, or don't get enough volume in so it looks flat.

I read about someone sewing wire into the seams of theirs (as well as interfacing it), but I don't know if I can find it again. It made the shape really sharp, but that may not be what you want?

Pic not entirely related, but her seams are different from others I've seen. She made it a part of the "shoulder" rather than a separate piece attached to her leotard. It looks a lot cleaner and gives emphasis to the "flower petal" nature of those points.

Serious question:
Why do you love Sailor Moon? (manga or anime whichever)

As a kid? I loved having a goofy, funny superhero. In the eighties and early nineties, women superheroes for girls were generally always perfect, very serious, always right, whatever (Jem, WonderWoman, SuperGirl.) Then Usagi rolled into the scene like Scooby Doo and I loved it. I loved having a superhero that was funny and didn't like school, did badly in tests and was a bit of a crybaby, but who, in the end of the day, had to overcome her own fears in order to help out her friends. In my country we got the unedited ending to the first season, and I remember you couldn't have pried me away from that television with a crowbar.

As an adult I have to admit, I don't quite have the patience for the show, old or new, anymore. The first arc of the manga aged pretty well, I thought, but after that it does kind of start to get a little repetitive and boring for an adult.

But I have a question for the thread! Has anyone tried one of the senshi fuku patterns and liked them? I just got back from Jo Anns and I thought both the McCalls and the Simplicity patterns looked pretty sketchy. Anyone have any experiences with indie brands?

I followed Cosplay Cupcake's tutorial with a white leotard and I think it turned out pretty well (pic related). It was pretty straightforward and free. The skirt seemed really short at first but after attaching it to the leotard and putting on some skin colored tights I wasn't as insecure anymore.

Thank you! Tbh, I purchased the gloves off of eBay (can't recall the seller but they were non-shiny wedding gloves I think) but attached the arm rolls per the tutorial. I also used a layer of quilt batting for the arm, sleeve, and hip rolls; it added an even layer of padding without getting too thick.

There's definitely lots of detail in there! Something they did leave out was the choker, but I just sewed the long sides of a rectangle of fabric together, flipped it inside out, and attached velcro to it.

I would recommend Sparkle Pipsi's tutorial for the skirt, bows, and sailor collar though. The bow templates were easy to make out of newspaper. I also prefer this method of the skirt since I think it yields crisper pleats.

Lastly, above all else, please no satin! The fukus are meant to be sort of battle armor and they never really resembled shiny material in the manga nor anime. Sparkle Pipsi recommended poplin and I used something similar that was heavy.

I want to cosplay Titanium Kerokko from the Sailor Moon musicals, but I'm nervous that people will assume I'm just doing an OC or something, as the the Sailor Star musicals weren't... As successful I guess? It's not like I mind telling people who I'm cosplaying as and this would be for me but I'm expecting it to happen a lot.
I probably will just end up doing it though. She's got a cute design.

I've seen this posted serveral times. Is it always you are are there others that hold this incorrect assumption?

The skirts are incredibly flowy in the manga and rarely, if ever, depicted as heavy poplin pleats.
I can see someone going for that direction based on the anime but don't say that they manga claims the same thing, please.
I'd also mention that the anime skirts have some crazy ruffle-ish looks when the spin and such so I personally dislike the stiff Sparkle Pipsi method. That's not to say that I don't think people who make their uniforms following her look aren't great, I just don't like the 'SATIN=SATAN" mindset when there are lots of methods available depending on personal preference.
As far as the fukus being "battle armor" I will agree to a point: while they are meant for battle, they clearly aren't plated and stiff warrior wear, with the flowing bows and such. I tend to think they are more a magical armor than a physical one.

I haven't looked close are the commercial sailor patterns in a while (since they released that god awful Sailor Moon pattern, I think) but I am very fond of the Cupcake's tutorial, if you are going for a ruffled skirt look. If you're afraid of sewing stretch material you can easily purchase a white leotard (or 2 if you can get them cheap enough and want to use the second one to make the chest armor and hip/shoulder rolls).

An important thing to keep in mind when making a sailor fuku is proportions. As you make each part, frequently compare your silhouette to the reference and adjust the cut/placement/size of things accordingly. Your skirt is going to be VERY SHORT but don't let that freak you out: with the way the outfits are cut this usually isn't lewd/obvious. I think one of the biggest pitfalls of fuku construction is too long skirts.

I'm not the only one but it's something that does get parroted often (it was actually told to me when I asked for suggestions on fabric). I do agree that some of the artwork (including your pic) look very flowy and satin-like and their pleats aren't as harsh as poplin makes them. Not everything in artwork translates well to real life though. Personally I haven't ever seen a good satin fuku so I just go off of what I've seen work for others. Also, Cupcake Cosplay recommend Casa satin and that usually ends up way too shiny and not as flowy as it ought to be.

Personally I think Scuba knit is the best choice for the fuku skirts + tops.

It bounces and twirls, plus it's quite substantial so it looks really nice and solid, like I always imagined the fuku's did. Add a bit of horsehair and you can get an even better shape, assuming you're more inclined to go for the sort of circular ruffles rather than pleats.
