What is a good source for nice cheap lace besides taobao and Aliexpress?

Are the lace prices on etsy reasonable or overpriced?

I only recently got into handmade and so far sourcing fabrics is the hardest thing.
>>
Does anyone know an easy technique for making gathers evenly? I'm doing the two-lines-of-straight-stitches-and-pull method right now, but they're not coming out very uniformly.
>>
>>8879553
Etsy prices depend on the lace. They're often marked-up taobao/aliexpress finds, but it depends on the fees you would have incurred buying from those sources, and whether you need huge quantities or not (some listings are wholesale only; the etsy seller then divides that up, so you're not buying $100 of lace when you need $15).

Cheep Trims is good for wholesale quantities and has a wide variety. Kuboriki is good if you want to use the same laces as lolitas in Japan (some of these can be found duped on taobao, but the materials aren't always as nice).

>>8879604
Ruffler/gather foot is the easiest and fastest way. It basically makes little pleats instead of "ruffles", but they're so small that they just look like even gathers.

If you have a serger, it should also have a differential feed setting. Set properly, it allows you to gather non-stretch fabric slightly, then you can pull the thread to tighten the gathers. Faster and more than doing it purely by hand, and also less likely to bust the threads due to friction/tension.
>>
>>8879625
>faster and more even*
>>
>>8879353
I have this GoruRori. Oh god, How I hate Gosu Rori's patterns. Don't know why I kept buying them.
>>
can someone post pictures of the girl that does really nice handmade folky/village dresses? I mean while wearing her dresses that is, I remember they were very nicely made. she is very chubby like a balloon (no offense intended) by the way, if this helps in identifying who it is

i forgot to save pics before for inspo, if anyone has pics it would be very helpful. thanks!
>>
>>8880332
If you're talking about the really big girl who was trying to sell them, those dresses were not nice...

What's the best way to store rectangle headdresses? I was keeping them flat in a box, stacked on top of one another, but it becomes a massive pain when you want one on the bottom and have to arrange them all again.
>>
Anyone else have problems about being indecisive about what to make when you get some fabric you really like?
>>
you prob look like shit if you wear handmade
>>
>>8884366
This
>>
>>8884366
Sure, most handmade isn't great, but there's quite a few nice pieces out there.
>>
>>8884366
>i cant sew for shit so nobody can
admittedly most people do look shit in handmade because most people just do sewing as a hobby but handmade clothes are still the finest looking and most expensive stuff you can buy if a quality tailor made them
>>
>>8884365

Yup. I scored btssb's gingham rose and ribbon off yja somehow and have been hoarding it for 6 years while I try and figure out what to make. The top and bottom of the fabric has different borders and the fabric is much thicker than what I'm used to, which makes me second guess every design idea I have.

To top things off the print price has fallen a fair bit, so now I also have dresses of the print that I can wear immediately while being unable to decide on the fabric.
>>
>>8884918
Oh I love that print! Well, whenever you do decide what to make, you should post it here.
>>
>>8884366
How do you think brand started? No one is waving a magical girl scepter, that's all someone's time and effort.

Anyone going to try this when it comes out? The cleavage bugs me a bit but I think it can be fixed easily.
>>
>>8887892
Oh my god fuck no. It's like slutty MM.
>"free lolita bonnet" in the corner
>probably cardstock and hot glue
It's just a sleeveless dress with sleeves hanging on for dear life on the side. There's a nice tutorial for a lolita OP like that somewhere on LJ, I'm sure it's easy to find.

Instead of making these gimmicky costume patterns, I wish they'd make more "mix and match" sort of patterns for cosplay/lolita. A lot of the time, for cosplay esp, the user has to alter a lot of it and only uses a certain part. It's kind of annoying to unfold like 12 sheets of tissue paper to try to find the 4 small pieces you need.

If they did a lolita line with separate bodices and skirts in a wide variety of sizes, it would do so well. That way, even fatty-chans and ana-chans could have appropriately constructed clothes and not blame it on their size. They could do various bodices in OP and JSK styles, and skirts in tiered, gored, gathered, ruffle panels, etc. Sell them separately and make bank.
>hire me, simplicity
>>
>>8884366
If you're a professional dressmaker who sews for a living, at what point does it stop being 'handmade?
>>
>>8887892
left would be cute for larme
>>
>>8887892
Mayyybe if I can pick it up for really cheap, but I feel like I should be able to draft this sort of thing myself at this point. I like the ruffled bust part but it obviously needs several more inches up top.

>>8889122
Are actual lolitas even their real target audience, though? It seems that practically all of their alt fashion and costume patterns are simple and skanky, and I always assumed their target audience was normie women with mediocre sewing skills looking for a quick slutty Halloween party costume. In this case instead of the usual sexy pirate, they can now be a rockabilly or lolita girl for Halloween.
>>
>>8887892
Don't know about you guys, but I'm really liking the one on the left. The other one is...really disappointing.
>>
>>8879660
Why, if you don't mind me asking?
Were they hard to make or something?
>>
>>8884366
Nice bait.
>>
>>8883014
Fold them carefully around cardboard and keep them upright in a box, like fabric.
>>
>>8883014
Can you not just keep them turned 90° so you see the side of them?

They did that for historical patterns and they are all out of print now so that must not have been popular.

They're kinda outdate in terms of fashion. Not only because of the year they're launched, of course, but because most of the patterns looks slumpy and gross.

Ohh thank you!
>>
When you craft headwears (little hats, crowns, bows, jewellery, etc) what do you use to keep it in the hair without falling?
>>
>>8893572
Ribbon combined with something to give it "traction" in the hair. Combs for hats or bonnets, wig clips occasionally for bonnets or smaller accessories, little alligator style clips for fascinators, bows or heavy headdresses, and covered headbands for anything requiring more support than the above due to weight or structure or whatever.
>>
Why don't more handmade lolitas post in places like CoF? There seem to be quite a few in the online community.

If I were you I'd do a black chiffon ruffle with maybe an overlay of thiner black cluny lace. I think using some chiffon would give it a nice sort of smoky, spooky feel. I've got no idea the design of your dress but Perhaps even a chiffon hip peplum, trimmed in the same lace?
Admittedly I just really like chiffon so I want to use it everywhere.

Pin carefully before sewing. If it looks like crap when you pin it, it'll look like crap when you sew it. You may just have to hand sew it on, too. Good luck! It's things like that which will make your pieces look more professional.

Does anyone have a suggestion for marking dark fabrics? I've been practicing smocking and using tailors' chalk, but it rubs off so easily that I lose my place about two or three rows in. It can be a permanent mark if need be, so long as it doesn't bleed through to the right side.

I've had the same issue with soap and chalk in that it rubs off pretty quickly because of all of the folding/manipulating involved in smocking. It works nicely for marking seams and darts, though. So I've done that before.

>>8914284
I had not thought of metallic gel pens. I was debating tiny dots of paint, but the drying time was too risky. And as obvious as fabric tacks are, I'm already doing a couple hundred hand stitches per section of smocking. Having to do another couple hundred to mark my points might well drive me nuts. lol

Smocking is decorative with no stretch. Shirring trends to be stretchy. You can embroider OVER shirring, too. But. Yeah.

I do geometric smocking for texture. I'm working on a honeycomb smocking piece to gather a skirt. The maths aren't working out quite right yet.

Just looked through the taobao shop and.... if this is the size of one of the cameos, it might just be too big?

One of the sewing mooks dealt with a pattern of a similar scale and made it into a yukata instead, if that helps.
>>
>>8922427
It depends on the look you want. Chiffon is softer and drapes more nicely. It's usually not as shiny. Organza is stiff and shiny. I personally like chiffon better as it looks more elegant IMO. Organza can look cheap, and I found this out the hard way when I received my Infanta Tangled OP and realized the organza overlay is not nice in person.

I bought this handmade dress secondhand as a fixer upper, but I'm at a loss for what to do. There are a lot of structural problems; the shirring isn't encased, the selveges were left in, and the seams are weak.

I'm thinking about taking it apart and reusing the fabric to make a JSK, but I'm not sure what design to go with.

Maybe something simple, because the print's so busy? The border on the bottom needs to go, it doesn't match much of anything.

If you don't want to take the dress apart (it's a lot of work), a couple of those problems can be solved by making another lining for the dress.

To get the pattern pieces, basically smooth out a piece of the dress as flat as possible on a flat surface (a large table or something) and then trace out the pattern piece onto some paper (I used mahjong paper, thin enough to see through, but you might go with onionskin paper if it's too opaque to see what you're tracing). That should give you a close enough shape to work.

For shirred panels, use a ruler to measure the height of the shirring. Then stretch out the top and put it against a long ruler (tape the ruler down so it doesn't shift, it's easier) to get the length of the top, do the same to get the length of the bottom. Draw out the rectangle/trapezoid according to the measurements.

You should be able to sew up the lining according to the pieces you traced/measured, then handstitch them to the inside of the dress (trust me, if you're thinking of ripping the seams of the dress, handstitching a lining to the inside of the dress is much less work). After that, you can run a few lines in between the shirring lines to encase the elastic of the shirring between the original dress and the new lining. As for weak seams, the new lining will help take the stress (particularly if you make the lining slightly smaller than the actual pieces you traced -- not too small though, just go down by, like, a few mm each seam so the dress is maybe 1-2cm smaller) so the weak seams won't matter as much. Selvedges being left in -- if it doesn't have a noticeable impact, I'd leave those in as well, they're now much less visible now that there's an extra lining in.

Only thing it doesn't solve is that heinous pink border. But, you can remove the border and sew lace to the lining so that it looks like a frilly underskirt, so that's an option as well.

Sorry for the block of text. Hope what I described is clear enough.

Ah, I'm glad you still found some use in the descriptions.

If you're remaking the dress from scratch it's easier to look up how to attach the lining. The handsewing is really only necessary if the dress is already complete (it'd be impossible to get it under the sewing machine).

Do post when you're done, I've love to see its transformation.
>>
>>8928718

Just to clarify, I'm not cutting up a dress. I actually scored 3 metres of the printed fabric off yja. Like, flat fabric off the bolt, selvedge and all.

Which is what makes it harder to make a dress from it, when I bought the fabric Gingham Rose and Ribbon was around 10~20k yen for a dress, while this mysterious fabric was only 6~7k yen. But now Gingham Rose and Ribbon dresses can be found for under 10k yen (if you're patient and keep looking for it), so I ended up buying the dress and now I'm not sure what to make from the fabric (I'm not selling it. It's my dream print as well, so I still want to make a dress from it).

Can I have some opinions? I'm going to make a crown today/tomorrow, pic related is the sample piece (I will change it a bit).

What bothers me is the beads. The yarn I am using are pure white but the beads I have are slightly off-white. Is it ok to mix these two? Or should I use coloured beads instead (which will make it harder to coord)?

Of course I could wait for the next week to shop some suitable ones but then I'm not sure when I would have the time to make this.

Tatting! So exciting to find another tatter here!

A crown huh? That's a neat idea, what style are you going for? I agree that the beads don't really go, kinda Holly hobby looking. I'd either go for a white pearl, or maybe pastel pearl or faceted if it's to match a sweet coord. But I think it would be fine without beads.

Have you tatted anything else for lolita? I've made a rose headdress and camera strap but haven't had any other ideas.

>>
>>8932642
I'm more into classic but I'm just starting to build my wardrobe. So right now I'm just making anything cute to wear.

For the beads, I need to use them at least on the bottom part since I don't want to change the desing there. For the upper part I can easily just drop them out. I have some white pearl coloured ones which are smaller (and don't fit well at the flower) so I try those.

And since I just recently got into lolita I haven't really done anything yet. For one blouse I used tatted lace but that's it for now. But I think you could tat chokers, bracelets, (maybe pendants), pouch (with lining inside), or just use it as a lace in something. Nothing else comes in mind right now.
