Are any of these supposed to be impressive?

Katsucon has become such a scam with shitty amateur photographers charging 100 bucks for 4 shitty, basic photos that any retard with a point and shoot could take
>>
>>8871061
>>8871072
These are cool.

The rest are either out of focus, dark and weird looking, or have some nasty HDR-ish thing going on.
>>
Most of these people don't even bother to take acne out before posting it with their names plastered all over it, like >>8871069.

HOW do these people get paid? Acne removal takes LITERALLY seconds to do. I wish we could tag the cosplayer in this shit and ask her how she feels being put on the internet with her pizza face out.
>>
>>8871337
The fault is squarely on the shoulders of the cosplayers. If they book someone who clearly has shitty photos on their site or portfolio, then I have no sympathy.
>>
>>8871603

The problem is the good people all get booked up super fast. When the only option is between shitty photos and no photos, what are people supposed to do?

We need a bigger photog supply on the east coast period.

Or all the super good people no longer take open bookings. Once a photog reaches a certain level of demand or notoriety, they tend to close their doors to friends only, or best case scenario they'll do an open submission and pick their favorites.

>>
>>8873588
Noob photog here. Why the preference for moving the model closer to the right in the close-up? Wouldn't that leave more empty space on the left side? Or are you suggesting he just zoom out more.
>>
>>8873604
She's looking to the left, but she's so close to the left edge, there's no lead space (the direction she's looking). It's like movies where you see people looking in a direction and the camera pans in the direction they are looking, not opposite.

Of course Eugene thinks its bait, but its a simple rule of photography that he usually ignores, just like his modeling photos with hair in peoples faces or harsh shadows from overhead light sources or giant text that obscures 1/3 or 1/4 of the image. These aren't professional. However he can't seem to handle honest critique and considers all the call outs bait.

Photo: Alexandra Lee Photography
>>
Rudi B Photography
>>
>>8873604
The model's face was the focus of the shot. To include a lot of space, or other elements into the shot would take away from the image (pic related). To be honest, even including the hand was a mistake. If there was a way to go in tighter while still retaining cosplay elements like the contacts, wig, and crown, that would have been the perfect way to shoot this.

As a noob photog, don't worry about the criticisms in here: the vast majority of these "photographers" are just winging it. They might have gotten a B in "Intro to Film Photography" in Bumfuck Community College, and now think they're in a position to tell people what photos should and shouldn't look like. The photo he posted with his critique was extremely blown out, badly cropped (the irony), and introduced framing angles that add nothing to the shot. So, it's apparent that if anon thinks something like this looks good, there's not much to say for his taste.
>>
>>8873606
>>8873616
Thanks for the explanations. Like I mentioned I'm pretty amateur at this (primarily a cosplayer), but I like lurking these threads to try to pick up framing tips. Pics related are mine from last weekend, so please critique away.
>>
>>8873632
These are good.

General nitpicking flaws: try not to show the bottoms of shoes unless you're like, shooting a boots advertisement or something, and go easy on the blacks and contrast. There's not much separation of the subject and background.

I prefer to get tight on my subjects, especially if they have really striking features, and stay away from tilting my frame. When they have great outfits, spend some time on their outfits as well. Also, eye contact is very big. You're already better than 75% of the photogs featured in this thread though. Keep shooting, you'll get it.

>>
58's Camera
>>
>>8873652
out of all that person's hall shots you could've possibly posted you pick that one. those cosplays are cringe city
>>
>>8873635
I like the framing in both and the Dutch angle is subtle enough in the right-hand one to be interesting and not obnoxious. You def wanna crank up the brightness/exposure on both of these though, they're a little too dark (on my Retina laptop monitor). It looks like you may have turned up the detail a bit, which is making the edges a little crispy-looking, but that may also just be compression issues. Since you didn't have external lighting, you may want to gently go in with the dodge tool and lighten up the model's face a little bit, since their strong brow is casting their face into shadow.

They're very nice photos! I think you have a really good start and with some more practice/nudging in editing they'll be even better.

And just as an aside for your model, they should work on more dynamic facial expressions, they look a little bored/dead in these.

cropping off the tip of the head is very common and understood thing though in portraits since you want to keep the eyes in the upper half of the photo.
>>
>>8873635
like the other anon said, take a midtone doge tool to her face and brighten up the levels a bit. You can make a photo moody by just taking down the saturation, but you still need to have good contrast so the eye can focus on something.

The cropping on the right is okay, but the one on the left has too much empty space above her and would've looked better horizontal or if the model was looking out and up a bit.

I think especially for huge group cosplays like Love Live, it's just easier to keep outfits consistent among members and typically reduces the chances of someone dropping last minute.

on his personal fb page, claims anon was late to their meeting so he was just shooting random hallway shots and when anon arrived, they waited for him silently to finish and didnt say something to him so he didn't know they were there. Alsom that you'd supposed to say something to them! Its your responsibility.

I think it would be awkward to get to a shoot, find your photographer shooting others. What ARE you supposed to do? The more polite thing would be wait for them to finish before you interrupt, but according to him, you should pretty much walk in front of his shot to get his attention or something.
>>
>>8876599
The character is suppose to be sad
>>
>>8877106
seems like the anon who posted abut him skipping out on their shoot deleted their post. He claims the best way of dealing with internet hate is to "kill them with kindness", but also said he was never going to shoot with the anon that complained again.

Idk how I feel about UV. A while ago he messaged one of my friends about shooting with her at an upcoming con and when she said she was interested he started listing all his rates, so she said nevermind. She asked me about it and I'm not against paying good money for good photos but...I think his at-con shots are over-shopped with stupid effects. I can do that shit myself. His locations shoots look good, but I wouldn't pay for his at-con stuff.

Also, if you approach a cosplayer asking them to shoot with you...then I think maybe the first shoot should be free to establish a relationship. Like, you approached them, you can let them know it was only free this time to establish a relationship. I guess because I think its tacky. you approached me. If I like what you give me (which can be like, 2 pics) then I'll book you in the future and of course pay.
Or tell me your price list right off the bat, don't wait until I agree to shoot with you and then spout out prices.

I'm one of the people who initially commented on the post before he deleted a lot of photos. There were multiple crotch shots as well as pictures of one girl's bare ass (the Nonon from KLK in the album). You can just tell the guy was far away and zooming in on people with his camera.
>>
>>8877124
If a photog did that to me I'd name and shame them so fast. You don't offer to shoot someone and then talk about charging them, that's sleezy as hell. Every photog that requested a shoot with me shot me for practice. I decided backgrounds and poses and changed my poses like 50 times per location to show them their options when it comes to working with someone for money in the future. We both got something out of the deal.

Eyebrow painting trend? Do you mean colouring your eyebrows the same colour as your wig or?
>>
>>8883021
Anon that's not even the same cosplayer or version of Nonon from the album. That's not even Katsucon.
>>
>>8883082
Yeah, but people do it in a very gross way. They can't be bothered sealing their eyebrows properly so it's just a mess of concealer, hair, badly draw new eyebrow and goopy eyeshadow.

I don't mind when it's done properly or when it's just subtly painted, but recently everyone and ther mother decided to do it the harder way.

If you pay attention to the girl in the pic, she has a concealer mess above and under her badly painted eyebrow. You can see hair sticking out covered in concealer.
Which sucks since she is so cute and her costume looks cute as well.
>>
>>8883116

>>8883618
Again lets reiterate half this board knows shit about photography, just like majority of the cosplay photographers who act pro, do shoots at cons, but then can't get work outside of cosplay.
>>
>>8883618
There's no way you can get that kind of bokeh without at least a mid tier lens. The guy obviously dropped some cash on that gear, and I was just curious exactly how much he dropped to take butt shots of strangers.
>>
>>8883926
Or they don't try to go pro? Easiest way to not like something is to start doing it for a job. While that doesn't happen 100% of the time to hobbyists going pro it happens enough to get a saying
>>
>>8884060
If you have a telephoto at max zoom and distance between subject and background you'll get you bokeh thanks to the power of physics no matter what lens it is.
>>
>>8884087
Can confirm, this is why I now have an office job and save the photography for cons and models.

>>

>>
>>8884236

>>
>>8885287
I'm a big fan of Seiken Densetsu / Secret of Mana. I wish I would have run into this cosplayer at Katsu. :(
>>
>>8885352
The big difference is L lenses are way heavier and durable, as well as weather-sealed, so you can shoot in a torrential downpour and not worry about water getting in. I've dropped my 100-400 before from a table, not on purpose mind you, but it was fine still after a four foot drop and after I recovered from my mini-stroke. The L lenses also have better motors and image stabilizers compared to the standard lenses. The L lenses are also white to prevent heat absorption, and that helps slow down overheating, in theory, from constant shooting in sunlight.

East Coast is full of photogs who spam themselves hardcore, as well as friend recs, but the funny thing is when the big cons come around, you can see who's the good ones are, because the good ones who open up shoots are quickly gone, while the ones who appear popular are still booking up until the con. Just see who's constantly posting on their pages or groups for the con
>>
>>8893082
It is. She's super gorgeous.
>>
>>8893121

That's hardly fair, GooJunky booked up in under 45 minutes and her work is subpar.
>>
>>8893121
>TFW you could easily book several $50+ shoots per con
>TFW you never do because you don't want to cut into your cosplay time

Booking east coast shoots is so aggravating because I don't want to pay a boatload of money for someone whose photog skills are the same or worse than mine. I have no problems paying for quality but even the people who are goodish but not great tier charge professional rates.
>>
>>8893066
