the cut of the skirt and blouse are gothic, and the lace trim at the bottom. imagine the dress was black; the shape and coordination would signal gothic.

but it is another tricky example because of the color. my usual deciding factor is to imagine a different color or theme: the HL coord has a sweet shape and style of coordination, while the floral Moitie has all the usual EGL items except it is brightly colored.

So what is so sweet about HG? It has coffins, crosses, no traditional sweet colors, and even a bat shaped collar. Just because it's not Moitie and is in AP's favorite shape as of late, doesn't mean this isn't gothic in every single way.

some of these are in a weird place, sweet shapes but gothic colors and themes. it can be hard to bring them away from their sweet design elements when coording, even with the blatant gothic motifs. they usually end up looking like hybrids of sweet and gothic.

what causes a lot of the debate is whether you rely on prints and colors versus design, shape, material, etc. to determine what defines a substyle. AP does frustrating things by using ungothic design elements for their gothic-themed dresses. instead of having the usual historic doll-like gothic shape, they have very modern, cutesey, childlike cuts and material/trim choices that suit sweet better.

everyone is different. understanding the distinctions between the three styles is important, but conforming to them isn't. if you can describe your aesthetic like >>8872036 does, you've got a solid understanding of what the categories mean and can explain your genre-bending in an educated way.

if you don't care to learn the distinctions, don't be surprised by the reactions of those who do. it's like literally any other field of knowledge. you don't need to know the difference between chocolate and vanilla to make a tasty cake, but if you frost a vanilla cake with chocolate icing and call it a chocolate cake a lot of people are going to take issue with that.

then other people will debate the difference between yellow cake and vanilla cake, and if yellow can really be considered vanilla or if that's just a lazy categorization. meanwhile others will be holding up a certain percentage of cacao as "true chocolate" while others make a case for milk chocolate or even chocolate-flavored sugar spread.

because that's just how knowledge and categories work in life. the details and distinctions are very fine, but the practical applications of those definitions can be vague. you will always be able to find someone who cares way more than you do ("A coord with a sweet dress is not a gothic coord") and someone who can't even tell the difference between what you consider to be basic categories ("My Milanoo dress has a floofy skirt and lots of lace, it's just as lolita as your elitist brand").

they're not strictly 100% sweet though are they because of the colors and themes(?) and I would agree that whilst the cuts are somewhat sweet, they have gothic elements and could work in a somewhat sweet, gothic coord or somewhat gothic, sweet coord depending on how you view it. Some people just can't seem to get over the areas of grey depicted in lolita fashion which frustrates me somewhat - I don't believe I have a misunderstanding of what 'is and isn't' however I don't think it can be measured in absolutes. If I wore any of the items in >>8870887 for instance, despite their sweet-gothic look, I would want to coord them in a way that would probably make them look more gothic (by my own aesthetic standards) overall, as that's my personal taste. At the same time, I wouldn't pair them with some of the 'shitting bats' accessories often associated with mana's brand of gothic lolita either, as I feel they wouldn't fit the image.

It's been mentioned before but 'gothic lolita' has always meant (in the Japanese definition sense) 'gothic plus lolita elements' aka 'gothic and lolita' aka 'ゴシックアンドロリータ', so to what extent one identifies something as 'gothic' will likely vary from person to person. It even explains in the Japanese wiki article that 'gothic lolita' or 'gosurori' is the shortened form of 'gothic and lolita' and isn’t, as some people have suggested, ingrish or misuse of a conjunction word.

In every major Japanese article I have ever read on the subject, they have defined lolita fashion, gothic fashion and then then explained the merging of gothic with lolita to create 'gothic and lolita'. There is no strict answer to what 'gothic' is or looks like but most can probably agree that it contains elements of the macabre, darker themes, and often but not always, a fascination with medieval, victorian and edwardian history as

well as christian iconography and themes of folklore.

I just found out the brand's name is actually Souffle Song. They are marking their product pictures with (c)Nightmare. Couldn't find these exact dresses though.

for the sellers thousand+ feedback, only one is negative. this is a damaged but imo salvageable Moitie JSK with a starting bid of 3,000 yen. the description is cute and sad, the seller acknowledges the flaws but doesn't want to throw the dress away and so hopes someone who loves Moitie will save it.
