>What is nanchatte?
Nanchatte Seifuku (translation: Fake Uniform) is Japanese school style worn that started out as students attending schools where uniforms weren't required making their own uniforms and expanded into everyday girls fashion. Since then worn by women and men for nostalgia for those wanting to relive their carefree school days.

What do you guys look for in terms of tops? I know they tend to be covered with neckties/carsigans/blazers but I still find myself being really picky when I'm buying them. I have one cheap cotton walmart short sleeve white button up, and I managed to find a silky 3/4 sleeve white button up at the thrift store that I love. (Pic related).
Do you think certain material, sleeve lengths, cuts, etc are more suited than others? And of course there's the question of color and what you can get away with. I tend to stick to white but I do have a tan/cream blouse that pairs well with red skirts and brown shoes.
>>
>>8850576
Personally, I look for anything that isn't too see through and has the collar like >>8850565 instead of the rounded collars I sometimes see (especially on Taobao). I think anything cotton is more traditional looking but if you're going for just casual more 'business' looking then any sort of fabric is fine. As for colors, white is traditional but I know places like Bodyline sell blue and pink shades and they're actually being worn in the linked pic as well. So once again, I think any color you can make work, will work.

That's a good point about the collars, stiff and pointy is definitely optimal!
I'll do another self post if that's okay, I'd like some concrit on this outfit, especially the fit of the blazer. Sorry for the dirty mirror.

A bow will help cute-afy your coord.
>>
>>8850637
Personally, I like it. It's very preppy and could be easily used for work.
>>
>>8850637
Not sure if it's just how your body is angled, but make sure your V neck and your buttons line up, also a touch of colour on your face would do you wonders. The blazer is slightly too wide on your shoulders, but also the arms look too short for nanchatte. Nanchatte sleeves, to me, should be able to be rolled up to the elbows or should fall at the thumb-index crease of the hand.
>>
>>8850637
I'd say a different skirt and a bow or tie and it's perfect

I have all the things for nanchatte seifuku I just feel like it's a lil too weeby.

I get to choose my clothing and style at work as well so I like to tie it all in in case Im spotted outside of work. I normally just wear this, and a pair of mary janes.. On my way too/from work, I wear a plain cardigan. Sometimes I wear an undershirt with a bowtie type thing on it, if that makes sense.. I'll post pics.

I'm mostly curious if it IS infact weeby or if I'm almost normy-core.

>>
>>8851111
im just a passerby and don't dress in nanchatte, but its possible you seem weeby because you're not dressed how an actual uniform is, you're dressed like an anime. a skirt that short with thigh highs isn't typically in nanchatte (to my knowledge), i belive it has longer skirts and shorter socks. it looks more like a uniform and less like cosplay.

where the hell do you work that allows you to wear a mini skirt?
>>
>>8851117
No one's ever commented on it except my boss's thai gf who decided we're best friends because I must like anime too lel..

I'm a nightclub bartender, and a lot of us workers kinda develop a style and personality and whatever else, its pretty cool.

But yeah that's the thing.. I'm not necessarily going for nanchatte (Unless Im like, at a con or some shit), trying to go more casual but I agree, I think THEN it comes off as weeby. :/ Oh well I guess.
>>
>>8851124
If you had said that it would've made more sense. I really did thought it was a costume for a moment.

I'm not really sure about the stigma against weebiness. Are you afraid regular people will think it's weeby or other nanchattes? Regular people would associate any eastern school uniform with anime or weirdness no matter what and imo, if I happened to encounter another nanchatte I'd be just happy about that fact and not give a shit if they thought I looked weeby. Which they probably won't since there aren't many of us anyways so what are they chances they're a bitch.

Self posting from this week. My friend got me alpaca tights so I made an outfit out of it. Pretty "weeb" but I don't care too much.

Not exactly regular people or nanchattes, but that inbetween group that often hates lolitas/whatever else. I know I shouldn't care and whatever, but y'know. Not that easy hah.

By the way I like the coord but I feel like some different shoes could tie it in so much better!

>>8851035
I'll experiment with a bow! I was wearing this to a sketchy part of town so I didn't want to over do the cuteness. What color do you think would be best?

>>8851021
The skirt is actually a wrap around so it works best if the buttons are kind of on the side. I understand its not traditonal nanchatte. And point taken about the blazer. Do you think rolling the sleeves up would be okay?

>>8850989
Thank you!!! The skirt is a little too short for my workplace rn but I'd definitely wear it to class.

Yes, just for daily use actually.

I would certainly go out with other people dressed in nanchatte, but the idea of a community seems a bit too much for me. I think it is because I consider it closer to regular clothing than lolita and whatnot. Not sure.

Not really, if they were cosplaying they'd wear the flashy-colored plaid skirt from the show (and an electric blue blazer, not a navy, standard one). Personally, I see this as a nanchatte version of the anime uniform.

I think it was covered in a prior thread that makeup is more natural since some schools in Japan didn't allow makeup while others only allowed small amounts. But that doesn't take into account if you're doing a gyaru look or something where the makeup ranges from natural to full fake lashes, tanner, etc.

>Regular people would associate any eastern school uniform with anime or weirdness no matter what
Actually, when wearing nanchatte in public (or in school when there's no uniform), people usually associate it with school-girl fetishes or a nerdy loser girl.

Even when I had a uniform at my old school (any color polo with navy or khaki pants or a skirt for girls), when I dressed in nanchatte one day (white oxford, red ribbon, black sweater, navy plaid skirt with black knee-high socks), I've had people look at me funny.
>>
>>8854348
Not sure if you're 'Murica or not but it seems like outside trendy cities, even wearing a cute skirt gets you looks. It just seems so out of the norm these days to dress up without being asked why you're dressed up to begin with. It honestly baffles people when you say "To look nice just because?"
>>
>>8853272
Keep it natural and fresh looking-- neutral eyeshadows, bb cream, lip gloss instead of lipstick, etc. Unless you're going for a kogal look in which case go nuts
>>
>>8854360
This is exactly what I was talking about essentially. (I'm >>8851111)

In a big city where I worked it was all good, but now that I'm back in USA, if I even wear a slightly longer pleated skirt and an otherwise normal outfit + high socks, people will even go as far as to comment on it in my own small city in America..
>>
>>8854751
I'm >>8854360 and yeah, I know that feel. I live in a little country town on the East Coast now and the only time you see women in skirts/dresses here is if it's Sunday and everyone is either going to or coming out of church. Otherwise all I see year round is jeans, shorts, or denim skirts.
>>
>>8852695
Their cute seifuku in general isn't too good for the top, but most people like the skirt. If you actually buy the separate pieces the quality is generally better.
>>
>>8853272
pretty much what everyone else says is what i do when i wear my outfits. if im not going for a kogal look, light thin eyeliner, bb cream, and lip gloss. if im feeling extra fancy with it maybe throw some blush and soft looking falsies on.

>>

I see them a lot being worn by 'stylish' girls. Gyaru especially seem to love them. I guess it helps that Japanese crocs seem to come in a lot cuter colors/designs than here.
>>
>>8852424
Which brand is the cardigan in your pic? What's it made of? It looks so soft.
>>
>>8854891
Crocs are pretty trendy in Japan. If you go on youtube and look at videos about harajuku, not about a specific haul but simply filming the streets, you'll see a lot of crocs being sold.

Crocs are still going strong in Japan because you can get away with loud bold shoes in casual wear and it works with the slip on slip off culture. Also I heard that it's Japan's answer to flip flops for everyday wear as flip flops look like shower/bathroom shoes and you don't really want to look like you're walking around in those.
>>
>>8852296
I really like the 'osaka' or whatever, the long skirts + tights thing is my favorite, but almost no one else likes it so finding stuff for it is hard.
>>
>>8856755
These two are so fucking cute. I dunno why, but neither comes off as creepy or anything, just like they're having fun. I love this.
>>

Argh, same.. Secondhand for long skirts is all I can say. Really glad to see this, am LARPer and am doing a character from Osaka for a school LARP. Is there any summer equivalent?
>>

That is pretty cute and classic looking too.
>>
>>8867542

There are some longer skirts like that. Heck, most of the 'short' skirts you see on girls are actually knee-just above knee length but they've been rolled up a few times.

This popped up when I searched 'long school skirt' so if you like how it looks, try 'vintage school skirt' or something?

>>
>>8874024
I don't think it does. I mean it's not really cosplay if characters fashion are modeled after real fashion. That's like saying you're cosplaying if you wear a seifuku because they're the default look for school animes.

What would you gulls consider a "school" blazer? I was browsing Jcrew for work stuff, and they definitely call this their "schoolboy" blazer; I'd say that it's quite fitted and cut shorter, as to be more flattering. Would a cut like this work with nanchatte? More generally, what aspects of a blazer would be more "typically" nanchatte? Is it the gold-tone buttons? The generally navy color?
>>
>>8856551
I would, sign me up!
>>
>>8876507
I feel that most nanchatte blazers, on their own, shouldn't be too flattering. They should fit you shoulders and chest, but it's shouldn't emphasize your curves. Things like buttons and color could vary, but it's the boxiness that makes it nanchatte imo.
>>
>>8850561

I try to wear nanchatte daily, whenever I don't wear lolita.

Yes I would like to join a nanchatte comm in my city! I'm pretty sure there are others interested in nanchatte. Some lolita comm members like sukeban outfits too!

I'm not too sure about nanchatte con meetups. I'll probably be cosplaying or wearing lolita. I don't consider it a weeb/super alternative fashion.

My favourite style is the Tokyo uniform version. I'm looking for a blazer of that color.
>>
>>8876577
A con meetup anon here, I think it's more practical for people who can't find others in their immediate area to have meets at cons since nanchatte wearers would be in the area then when they wouldn't otherwise. Especially if you take the opportunity to move outside the con area and do something together for an hour or two as a group.

I'm curious- what's up with all the nanhchatte at disney? Is it a really common thing or just coincidence?
>>
>>8881489
I'm not sure if it's still a thing but for a while it was super popular to go to Disney in uniform.

From an article in 2014:
>TOKYO -- There is a sight becoming more common at Tokyo Disney Resort -- visitors wearing high school uniforms even though they have already graduated from high school. The notion is that these people -- mainly women in their late teens and early 20s -- are looking to relive their days of youth at the resort known for its fantastical settings.

>"I wanted to come here with a school uniform on," said a 20-year-old vocational school student who was with her boyfriend at Tokyo DisneySea. "We didn't know each other while in high school, so seeing him in a school uniform was something new."

>"The idea of going to Tokyo Disney Resort in school uniforms has been around for some time, but that has become more of a fad recently," said Mihoko Nishii, a researcher at Dentsu Youth Study, the advertising company's branch that specializes in youth culture.

And in general, it was a thing to also go to Disney in groups wearing your work uniforms?

>>8882259
to further elaborate on what the other anon said, you get what you pay for. I got a $25 seifuku from Aliexpress while and although it's pretty cute (pic related) it's nowhere near the quality that it should be for everyday wear. The material is a little too thin, the ribbon (stripes) a bit too shiny, seams pucker a little etc. etc.

That said, taobao will certainly have more options and if you look around you might find seifukus that are made with a bit more care.

Bodyline's materials really aren't that bad (I have a tartan skirt and I'm quite happy with it) however I really fucking hate that zipper going down the middle for their seifukus...ruins the whole thing for me.

hello gulls! i just got these skirts in the mail:
>ebay.com/itm/371360213640
i only got 3.
>look
all of them look exactly like the photo. they have an unnoticeable zipper and button on the side.
>fit
i got a size medium and the waist was about 2 inches too big. i got my exact size and it should have fit perfectly, so i guess the waist measurements listed are slightly inaccurate. its no big deal though, i guess it makes it easier to put a blouse under it. as for length, the measurements are pretty exact for them, i was a little worried they might be too short but theyre actually the perfect length! they go about mid thigh. im 5'2 for comparison.
>quality
these skirts are great quality for the price and just in general. only things to be noted are that they are fairly thin, not unwearable thin though. these skirts are also not see-through at all if anyones worried about that. also when i just got them out the packaging they had a few loose threads on them, dont forget to cut those off. they dont have a smell.
>overall
these skirts are a really great purchase! i would buy them again. theyre cheap and do the job right, plaid pleated skirts are a must-have for any nanchatte wardrobe. i have some neck bows and sweater vests coming in the mail sometime soon, ill review those when they come in too if anyones interested.

Wear safety shorts under them if you're okay with how short the skirt is but don't want to flash anyone. If the shortness bothers you, resell the skirt and try Bodyline's better uniform skirts. I'm 5'6" and got a larger size on one so it would sit lower on my hips and with it like that, the skirt was just above my knees.

Alright. While we wait, here's the link:
http://world.taobao.com/item/25537176805.htm?fromSite=main&spm=a312a.7700824.w4002-8588650199.101.HCAgBE
Usually stuff from eBay is just stuff from Taobao at a marked-up price.
>>
>>8892185
The skirt from eBay was about $12 which would have basically covered shipping and stuff if I had gotten it from Taobao so I wasn't too put off. Plus I got dem eBay Bucks.
>>
>>8892177
I've bought from sock dream and I'm all legs. Their socks are ass highs. 11/10.
>>
>>8892002
Link to skirts and cardigans appreciated.
>>
>>8892553
They're a shit overpriced reseller tho. Most of their long "thigh highs" are just from China meant to be worn differently by short girls. I'm 5'11 and bought $5 socks from taobao up to my ass that are exactly the same. (My thighs are thick too) I'm just sick of people suggesting that ripoff.
>>
>>8852173
this seems more korean

>>8892002
that's a nice variety of things, congrats anon
>>
>>8892575
All the skirts come from this store:

Cardigans:

>>8893135
Which stores did you get them from then (5'7)? My legs are up to my neck so if I can get socks that are up to my ass as well then that's exactly what I am looking for. Thanks.

>>8893170
Of course, I'm amazing. ;)
>>
>>8892002
Yeah but why did you say to kill ourselves
Am I the only one who's noticed this????
>>
>>8893288
no, my guess is she was trying to be ~edgy~
>>
>>8893288
>>8893291
I had an empty space and figured it was better than being left blank.
>>
>>8893135
I've bought numerous socks and tights from Taobao for "tall people" and none of them are any good. The "thigh highs" are just OTKs and the tights all have a droopy crotch. So, if you think that sock dream is a Taobao reseller, then by all means please link me some good socks because I haven't found any. I am kind of a sock-holic and the only place with acceptable quality and lenght is sock dream so far for me.

Recently got into nanchatte and I have to know... how do you guys stop it from getting into cosplay/fetish territory? I recently wore the nanchatte blazer (a boxy navy one) and a friend asked me if I was cosplaying.

>>
>>8894145
If they ask what you're wearing or why are you wearing what you are, reply with:
Well why are you wearing what you're wearing?
Usually it'll confuse them, and you can reply with, "I'm wearing what I like to wear."
>>
>>8894145
>those knees

>>8894159
that's pretty passive aggressive, so keep in mind if you say that to randoms, some might get (unjustifiably) angry
>>
>>8894145
You can't really. Aside from not wearing your skirts too short and not wearing unusual colored wigs, people are going to think it's cosplay if they're into anime, or fetish stuff if they're clueless normies who think anything that isn't jeans and a tshirt means you're either going to a party, trying to be sexy to get laid, or wearing fetish gear in public.

I know this sounds stupid, but I can't figure out if any of the webshops listed on that spreadsheet actually ship to the US or now (besides Bodyline.)

Does anyone know of any nanchatte shops that ship internationally?

Sorry for being a newfag.
>>
>>8895934
Your best bet is sticking to eBay/Amazon or Global Rakuten (I assume that's international cause global) and using a shopping service for everything else.
>>
>>8895934
Teensever is a relatively cheap nanchatte shop.
>>
Is there a facebook group for nanchatte?

I paid about 25usd for one from china off eBay. I know TB is cheaper but I've shopped on eBay for years, plus it got here in about 2 weeks.

I've so far just clipped a Sailor Moon keychain on mine.

It'd be cuter to get some three quarter pastel trousers for the bf to build the uniform around
I think sailor collars are still cute on boys anyway

There you go Anon!

Btw, I'm the nanchatteforfun admin, would people like to see other uniforms on the website? I was thinking of referring to non-japanese or cosplay as 'nonchatte' - can still be used for inspiration, but isn't specifically nanchatte. What do you guys think?

Does anyone know where I could find school cardigans for a larger bust? I've got 47" I'm working with, but unfortunately none of the cardigans or sweater vests I'm finding go beyond maybe 100cm.

Or could I just look for regular cardigans. I'm not sure what the difference is between the Japanese school ones and one I can just pick up from the store. Pic related as just an example.
>>
I've just found these two (UK ebay). Not sure on sizing, but they have age 17/18. Gosh knows the sizing in cm, but these could be cute. Especially the dress!

Honestly, you can get one so cheap off eBay, it would probably be best to buy one, and take it apart for a pattern.
