I've been looking into building a fursuit-style Alphys head out of foam and I'm wondering if it would be wise to build it out of paper patterns first to get a general idea of what I'm doing.

Also, I'm not sure what to cover it in. Someone suggested I used fleece, but since Alphys is a lizard, I feel like that wouldn't look quite right.

Alphysfag from the past billion threads here; if you have no experience of how to foam, then you can draw out some reference pictures like frontal, sideways views. It helps to also maybe make a smaller scale draft out of clay, so you can see if your drawings translate into real life well.

I also use fleece, since it's readily available here and it's actually not that bad in terms of how it looks for a lizard. Pic related for what you can do with puff paint (I think?) and shading. The only downside to fleece is that it's very unforgiving in terms of bumpy foamwork, it needs to be smooth or it'll show through the fleece. Fake fur hides imperfections a lot better, but then again, lizards aren't furry. If this is your first mascot/fursuit anything, definitely bookmark the fursuit LiveJournal. It has a bunch of posts, and while a lot of it is useless for lizards, you can take some of the techniques from the tutorials and apply them.

My Alphys is all fleece, and it actually works very well for lizard based characters! As long as you can keep your based clean shaved and watch out for permanent marker showing through.
And uh, make sure your colors match. The head of mine is a lighter shade than the rest of the body, but that's because they were made by separate people. The creator of the head did send just about enough to remake at least one piece of the body but, it's really not noticeable unless there's flash or shit.

Other than that, if you need any sketch help, I helped an Asriel a few threads ago.

Would a chara jump scare cosplay go down well or is it a stupid idea? I haven't really got much sewing motivation atm but don't feel like doing a totally basic bitch cosplay

I have a question--What is generally preferred, Frisk cosplayers with leggings under their shorts, or without? Or does it not really matter? I'm going to be cosplaying Frisk at Katsucon (Along with about 500 others, probably) and I wanted to know if there was a general opinion about this out there.

I had this in Spanish brown for Chara and cut the bangs and straightened the back. The back definitely has a mind of its own so you'll have to smooth it down.

Is it possible to make drawing eyes over your own eyelids for Muffet look good? I am unable to wear contacts of any kind so I feel kinda bare without doing that but everyone I've seen hasn't done too great.

I haven't seen drawn ones that look irl, but if that's your only choice for Muffet then I suggest you practice shading and try to make them look as realistic as possible. Don't just color your eyelids with dark eyeshadow and call it a day: use multiple shades and highlights + eyelashes. It might not be as convincing as lenses, but at least you can compensate with hard work and effort.

Quick and shitty redline here, your teeth are too long. Take the smaller eyehole as maximum length for teeth. What might be tripping you up subconsciously is that in-game, Papyrus only squints with his right eye. I would also just forget about different shaped cheeks. It tends to not work in mascot suits. Instead you can round out the not-squinty eye at the bottom so it's extra clear the other eye is the squinty side.
To make him more huggable: smooth everything out. If the face is less rough and completely textureless/smooth you'll automatically get a more approachable appearance. Either sand vigorously and paint, or cover with a fabric.

I did a slower and shittier redline.
Depending on which ref you use you'll get a totally different head but the major criticism I'd have is that the teeth are really flat and the nose is really small.

I noticed most people reference the straight on pictures which is odd since the you see his speach bubble head more often. And the 3/4 view of his head looks more like a skull but still has his charm.

The bloomers in your picture work with the fitted bodice because the rompers have waist seams. The Muffet in >>8861469 (and -it looks like- every other Muffet so far) made her romper without a waist seam, so there was no way to have that fitted bodice and the poofy gathered shorts flow well together. It looks like the seam for the short poofs are gathered at a V, almost like a swimsuit.

There were some good cosplays. Saw a couple good Frisks, Charas, Asrials. There was a really good mascot Toriel, a good Burger Pants, some Asgores, a good mascot Alphys and a couple good sans. I am pretty confident that mine will be good. I'm planning the proportions very carefully and doing heavy modification on my wig and boots so that even those have the right silhouette. The only thing I'm a little stuck on right now is how to do the arms, since I haven't really seen any that I like that much. Anyone have any cool ideas? Sure, the mask is made by Kaiborg Studios but seems to be worn by someone else? Chubird or something with -bird. I don't know if the bird person is part of Kaiborg or not, it's a bit confusing. What are some of people's favourite interpretations of Frisk's outfit? I'm just getting started on a basic cosplay (might add accessories later) and have an oversized baggy blue sweater with the stripes done so far. The sprite looks like Frisk has pants/boots but then I've seen a variety of other clothing combinations.

I did the babby sweater and shorts with brown boots, which seems to be pretty common.

ONe thing for mine is my shorts are overalls, that depending how I'm feeling I'll have over or under the sweater. Both seem to look fine. Its up to you, the nice thing about the official art all being done by different people and the sprite the way it is, is that you can take any interpretation you want and really not be wrong.

Britfag Sans here. I want to remake the head as it's too big and I fucked up with the shaping (I misinterpreted the sprite hence the weird indent all around)
I don't have access to pumpkin pails, so was thinking of using this method for my second attempt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrW1ndCLebY I used paper mache for my current one but with a large balloon used for parties.
My only concern is the shape of the head in the video from the side, it looks really off to me? Would this be a good method or is there something else I should try?

I would go for colored version. Maybe a cheesy comedian suit, and a joke book? Maybe a big snowflake on your head, though I'm not sure. Birds are hard to humanize in general, snowdrake even more so

Knitting anon, realized I never really reported in with the finished product. Here is one of the few pics I got of me from Katsucon this weekend. I feel lame for self-posting but I kinda need help. So I recently did a test run for Sans' makeup. I'm inexperienced with face paint, but I kinda have a handle on the basics. I don't think its the worst thing I've done to my face, but I'm just "meh" about it. Is there anything I can do to improve it? Some advice would be awesome.
Oh, I also plan on painting the rest of my neck black. How can I do that without staining the white undershirt? Or is that just a casualty I have to deal with for the cosplay?

Do less teeth, it'll look more comical and less spooky. Nose-hole shape seems off to me, too.

Anyways, I'm going to be cosplaying Mettaton EX soon too and here are the most important things I can think of right now.

Don't make your lip makeup too prominent (especially don't do that 2 toned lip thing everyone is doing) since in canon his lips aren't defined at all. Just go witha slightly darker grey instead. Don't do shiny face paint, it looks awful. Make sure your proportions/silhouette are good. Plan that shit out thoroughly. That is something people seem to neglect with most cosplays and that's a big part of why so many do not look like the characters. Do tests/mockups if you have the time and post 'em here for critique. Only thing I'm not sure about yet is what to do for the arms because I haven't really seen any I like yet.

those rounded bits at the end of the smile need to be way bigger. They're the apples of Sans' cheeks, so having them be that small looks very strange.

Don't do that stupid harlequin smile. Don't do a two-tone lip. Clean lines are vastly important for the paneling; I prefer to apply them with a chisel brush, personally.

Holy crap why didn't I think of the classic balloon+papermache for the mask?! That's a much cheaper way to go than the pumpkin pales. Out of season those things are like $10 each

You're face paint applications looks awesome but with time it could start to rub off at a con, I've used white foundation instead of paint before and layered it until it was super white, I found it a lotttttttttt more comfortable to wear and it's a lot more easy management during a con so maybe try that out as another option
