Lord forgive me.
Baby's first con and baby's first cosplay. Made with costume satin. Complete with braces with green rubber bands on them, and black tights stretched over flip flops cuz apparently boots weren't a better idea.
I don't think we actually ever figured out where my friend's costume was from. We just ordered it because she looked like the character we saw in the photos on eBay.

For some reason I thought these were older, but my first cosplay was Sanosuke from Rurouni Kenshin. I used an old martial arts gi and my mom helped me paint the kanji. I wore it to a video game con that I thought was an anime con.

Back on topic, I wish I had photos of all of my shit tier costumes. I started cosplaying at 13 and didn't really improve until 17 or 18. The first one I made by hand was a shitty pikachu gijinka but I was so proud of how well it held up through 2 cons.

YUP. I remember seeing all of her old costumes with Jia and being so stoked to commission her because her stuff for herself was good...and I got this and it was pretty bad. It didn't fit, I have the inside safety pinned. They made "stockings" with the costume that looked like giant garbage bags.

Technically not my First cosplay, but first one I can actually call a cosplay.
Can't tell from this perspective, but the vest has a white X like the hat on the back. I was 14 at the time.

Damn! I wish I had a picture for you guys of my Alexander Anderson cosplay from back in like 2004.

I used a brown marker to draw his scar on face, and I made his coat out of an old trench-coat that my brother-in-law gave to me (used duct tape on the inside to secure purple silk to the edges of the coat because I could not into sewing). I made his bayonet sword-things out of wire coat hangers, cardboard, and aluminum foil. So ghetto. But I was proud of it at the time and felt like a fucking badass prowling around as the Judas Priest.

My first cosplay was my own take on a GLaDOS gijinka. Portal 2 had come out a month earlier and the hype was real. I canceled another cosplay I had planned for my first convention and threw pic related together instead.

It was an old dance costume that I threw a bunch of shit onto. I had an Aperture logo on my back and "GLaDOS" down my leg. I really thought it looked good and even tried to join in on a group of Core gijinkas who basically told me to fuck off. I got mistaken for Haku from Vocaloid at least once.

GLaDOS would've been disappointed in me.

The only picture I have of my first cosplay is this screenshot from a convention video that year, (un?)fortunately. I was 12 and it was also my first ever convention. It was a plain white t-shirt, shorts from Goodwill, and a bunch of felt and fabric paint.

I still have the shirt as a memento, which SURPRISINGLY hasn't fallen 100% apart, years later... Probably because I never wore it after that day.

Kinda all this. Everyone in this thread seems so happy. I think we were all awkward kids discovering that we weren't alone in our love of animated characters and fictional worlds. We didn't care about accuracy or craftsmanship we just liked meeting people, seeing other costumes and maybe getting recognized here and there. I'm glad I'm past these days but there's something quaint about those pre-seagull days.

I was really proud of how clean the sewing was, yet I used such a light pale blue that hardly anyone recognized me as Lucy. But the few that did turned out to be awesome and my long time con friends now. It was my first time at a full sized con, all alone, no glasses one so wandering the halls half blind. It was great.

I wish I had pictures of my first cosplay. I just spent 5 mins Googling Chibi-Pa 2005 and found nothing except that Cloud we thought was hot. My phone didn't have a camera and I didn't bring a disposable one.

Can't you tell I'm totally Ichigo from Tokyo Mew Mew?? God I wish i had some pictures in the awful party city wig i had with this. I never actually wore it to a con but i always liked to say that I was Ichigo whenever I wore this kimono and cat ears. My grandmother actually made the Kimono for me. I think I was 13 when these pictures were taken. God i remember wearing those cat ears literally everywhere all the time.

I'm stuck wearing my glasses. I wore contacts for years before I started cosplaying and developed an allergy to them. I even tried daily contacts but can't wear them anymore. They caused such bad eye infections I couldn't even read my laptop screen 8" in front of my face. But my vision is stable now and I'm thinking about getting lasik.

Almost 9 years ago a bunch of high school friends got together for a final fantasy cosplay. I was cloud, bought and no wig so my friends tried to spike my blonde hair (worst decision ever).... I had fun doing it with friends, but this is the kind of shit that made me try to improve myself and my costumes.

I'm supposed to be Snape from Harry Potter. I was 14. I wanted to dress up for the last movie but it was a total last minute thing...literally. I made my friend's dad drive to Party City where I bought a $10 witch wig, but it was far too long. So on the way to the theater, a 2 minute-ish drive, I hacked away at it with children's safety scissors. The trenchcoat is from Old Navy, the wand is a stick I painted, the cape is from my 3 year old brother's Batman halloween costume, and for some reason I wore flip flops for this "photoshoot."

But I've learned from my mistakes and I still had a fun time.

No cosplay pic (thankfully), but my first cosplay was Anju from Chibi Vampire back in 2009.

My Solid Snake had some extra poundage and a sweaty mop at the time. After all that expensive military gear this is the one photo that I ended up with. Oh well, this was the only time that my buddies went with me to a con, so it was probably my favorite one despite the costume.

Eh it used to be bigger but then Homestuck came in and took over cons to the point that I was pleased to see any Vocaloid cosplay.

I dressed up as a Raver Giant from KoL, based on its description in game. Nobody knew what I was (closet cosplay, turning a stick figure into real life) but a couple people asked for photos. I still have the Scooby-Doo shirt I bought for it.

Age 14, and this was my second con, ALA 2006. I was part of that mass of Fruits Basket fangirls who couldn't hold their biscuits together in Kyo Sohma's presence.

I had no wig, and I tried straightening it but obviously that didn't work out. Cosplay was by my mother and my aunt. Had a lot of fun rewearing it for a couple of years until I really started sewing.

I cosplayed Kagura since my parents wouldn't let me buy the overpriced Sylphiel cosplay I wanted by SetsunaKou.

Technically my first cosplay was of Lord Death from Soul Eater, was for a high school party. Thankfully I don't have any pictures. The mask was just laminated paper Velcro'd onto a black spandex mask.
