Can we have a nail thread?

I am working on growing out my nails and I am using pretty nail photos to remind myself to use my cuticle oil every night.

Post your favorites pictures and tips for nails that go with different Jfashions.

Could I ask you some questions about acrylics?
I am completely spooked by the way people talk about the damage. When you had them off last time did it like destroy your nails?

it makes them very very soft, but a way to sort of combat that is by putting gel on them, or one of those nail hardening polishes on. my nails are pretty soft to begin with, but it doesn't completely destroy them.

Acrylics, gels and soft gels can all damage your nails if they are pulled off. They need to all be filed off, or with soft gels they are filed then soaked in pure acetone. The damage is done with they are applied (overfiling the nail) and removed by pulling.
>nail tech
>>
>>8791304
actually that's not true, the nail itself is softened by the lack of air as well as the fact that it is thinner due to grinding down initially. it does become a fair amount softer just from using the acrylics.

Softness can be repaired with the right products, your nail will survive if you're careful. I did cover the initial grinding.
And the other poster acknowledged the softness.

>>8791311
Yes, the hard gel comes from a tub generally and is (again, generally) used for extensions. Soft gels 'last' as long as regular gels last, which is dependent on the growth rate of your nail. Then you have the top scuffed off and your nails are wrapped in 100% acetone and foil, then gently scraped off to remove the polish before reapplication.

I think it helps them grow faster in my experience. I don't know if they are stronger. The best way I have found (other anons can add to this or disagree) that painting cuticle oil on my nails everyday helps make them stronger. Paint it on on top and the bottom of the nail. You can rub some on your hands, too. My nails are way better and my hands are so soft. It's awesome. I heard you can just use jojoba oil too, but I haven't tried that yet. Mine is made with almond oil. I noticed a little difference right away, but if you do it every night it really strengthens your nails.
>>
>>8791365
Hey thanks! I really didn't want to start taking vitamins. I buy regularly almond oil for my hair, next time I'll put some in my nails.

>>
>>8791307
I really love these, it's nice to see matte nails in these threads.
>>
>>8791322
Different anon, but generally the gel kind is a little less durable than the acrylic, but can look much clearer and glossier and generally takes less sanding to finish. If you aren't very rough on your hands they're fine, but if your nails are used as tools you're better off with acrylic.
>>
>>8791433
If its good for your hair, 99% of the time its good for your nails too. They're the same protein, just different shapes.
>>
>>8792338
That's good to know.

>>8792186
I love matte nails too. I only have a top coat that makes things matte though. I haven't played with it much yet but I hope it works well.
>>
>>8792338
Yeah, I know the effects of biotine, but I have read that they might have side effects like hair loss and Im afraid about that kind of things.
>>
>>8793249
I was referring to the oil actually. I know some people who rub their oil or protein treatments into their nails while doing their hair.
>>
how many of you do your own gel nails? I'm super interested but don't know if it's worth the hassle since I'm terrible at painting details
>>
>>8793785
The only reason I find gel polish a hassle is because I learned it doesn't come off with reguklar nail polish. You have to use 100% pure acetone, which stinks like hell and can't be good for your fingers. The nail polish remover I use is acetone-free (for regular nail polish). I got a gel manicure done for the first time in a salob and then I bought an acrylic kit to start doing my own nails, with regular nail polish, I ended up just filing down my nails in order to get the gel off rather than to damage them with acetone.

Since some of you seem to be curious and I've been getting gel nail polish applied for a little over a year now, I thought I'd add my two cents:

My nails are way healthier than before. I'm sure there's some damage, but compared to always covering them with regular old nail polish, the difference is massive. No more brittle or yellow nails. I've tried Shellac too, and I like gel much better.

Gel nails last as long as you want them to last. Mine are done on my own nails with no extensions and they are legit tough. I have to travel weekly, with lots of luggage, and despite the fast paced luggage carrying my nails are long and strong. Usually get them changed every four weeks but that's only due to my nails growing out. Imagine your roots coming in, and your hair looking unkempt. Similar situation.

My nail tech files it away, no acetone. She said she doesn't like how damaging acetone is and I'm thankful she's so careful. The old place I went to said and did the same thing.

The application (with the removal of the previous gel polish) takes around 45 to 75 minutes. French polish is simple, if you start asking for something detailed obviously the procedure lasts longer.

I usually try to choose something that doesn't look bad when my nails grow longer. Like a gradient, heavy towards the tips and lighter towards the nail beds. Or "fancy" french manicures. If you do decide on one solid colour you could always paint the new empty spaces, but the gel sections tend to be slightly higher than the rest of the nail so it might not look as good.

Equipment matters. The old place I went to had an UV light that would burn like satan's arsehole. I thought my nails were melting off. Or maybe it was because of their products, I don't know. At the new place I go to there's a slight sting, but that much I can take.
>>
>>8793813
>filing down my nails in order to get the gel off rather than to damage them with acetone.
Filing is way more damaging fyi. Filing is taking off layers of your nail that can't be replaced. The acetone is drying but not as permanently damaging. Plus if you use the cotton ball and foil method, your exposure to the acetone and its fumes is cut down significantly. Also I don't understand, since acrylic nails are meant to be removed in the exact same way (soaking in acetone I mean).
>>
>>8796016
Now I haven't actually done this, so I can't say for how easy it is (I may try it though), but one thing to always keep in mind is that on these videos you never know how many tries or how much practice they edited out. A lot of my clients pull up things on their phone or even try to describe how something was done in a video with the expectation that I can do it on them right there and then and its hard to explain this to them.
>>
>>8796099
>UV light that would burn like satan's arsehole
This will sound weird but do you frequently get glitter? Cus I've noticed glitter tends to burn. LED lamps tend to not burn, mine feels maybe mildly warm but I can't tell how much of that is just my hands being in a mostly enclosed electric device.
>>
>>8797303
That might be the case, but comparing it to how my shellac was removed (with acetone) and how the gel polish is removed (filing down) there's a massive improvement. Maybe it's the polish type, but I always hated the acetone and am glad about the change.

>>8797311
I never had anything with glitter done while using the previous machine. I'll pay attention from now on though, maybe it'll feel warmer with glitter.

Any suggestions for a guy trying to subtly up his nail game?

Color wise, strength wise, or what?
>>
>>8801084
Strength and style. I've seen dudes with well buff'd shiny nails and don't think it's quite my thing, but I could see a short clip and a matte natural color without drawing too much attention. (Social norms and all that) Though I normally have my nails long enough to be useful.

Hm, I have mentioned earlier the oil if you want to make them stronger for use and all that.
If you want matte you have to use a matte top coat or polish. You said it yourself that you want something neutral so just go for that, Maybe something to match your skin tone.

A lot of salons/spas are used to male clients, mine gets a lot of business men actually. Its usually a little cheaper if you go in for the basic trim and buff, though mine does a soak and scrub and lotion thing too that helps with the skin around the nails looking cleaner and less rough. As far as color, most places will also have a few natural tones for french polishes that you could probably just get over the whole nail without the white tips, and then get a matte top coat on it. There's also a few nail strengtheners that are fairly matte that can also be used as a base coat (OPI Nail Envy is what I have at home).

For home care, you could look into getting a buffer block and a good quality file. Good ones are cleanable and reusable and have a much finer grit on the one side for a very smooth finish, and a good buffer block will have progressively higher grits on each side so you could get your nail very smooth and matte, or even buff it to a natural shine if you wanted. Keeping them filed neatly will actually help them stay a useful length, since if you smooth off any rough parts before they catch on stuff, you'll have less breaks and splits.

Does anybody know of some cute fake nails that'd fit smaller fingers? I have stupidly small baby hands, and 90% of fake nails I find are either too wide, or are disproportionately long for my fingers.

I can't paint my nails because they never grow, for some reason. I am a nail biter, but even when I forego that for months, they never grow past the beds. I think painting them like that looks super messy.
>>
I've always loved these kinds of nails, and I realize they're a lot pricier than regular acrylic. But can someone explain to me what this is called, and what kind of salon I can go to to get these done? The regular nail salons don't really seem to do this.

I'm nearing my first 8 months of constant acrylics. When should I take a break, as in get them removed and go a brief period of time w/o? I've been trying to think of what time of the year would be good, since I wear it for Lolita and con seasons. Also, how would I help strengthen them during the break? Should I also consider taking biotin to help them? My nails are naturally thin, so that's the real reason why I get them; I get them filed down so the acrylic is really thin, but just enough to help protect my nail length, which is kept short. Most people are surprised to find out that they aren't entirely real, other than the polish.

oh okay, usually salons have gems and things if you just ask. almost all of them have stickers or stamps or something similar. very few but some of them will have sculpting acrylic for pic related styles. you basically just have to ask.

i would look up local reviews and check pics. calling and asking helps too because chances are many of them will just do basic french tips and not showcase much else.

You'll definitely have to call around and have lots of pictures ready for reference (as a lot of people will say "oh yeah i do nail art" and they mean they can put some basic flowers on you). As far as I know I'm the only person at my salon that has tried sculpting shapes onto nails, and I was one out of maybe 3 or 4 girls out of 150 at my beauty school with a mind to try it. If you're near a major city you're more likely to have a place willing to do it. I can't think of what to call them though that would make sense to someone not involved in jfash, as I've only seen them referred to as gyaru or gal or deco nails. Maybe if you describe them as super glam with stones and acrylic shapes?

Ok gulls, I officially broke my 19 - year-long nail biting habit. I have gone one week without biting my nails and they already look one hundred times better. I have never been to a salon before or ever had my nails done, so I would like to know just how damaging gel/acrylic actually is? I finally feel confident enough to show my hands to people, but I'd be heart broken if I got my nails done and they were damaged all over again.. if they are rough I will be tempted to bite them again.. should I just avoid a salon? Is it possible for them to paint tiny nails? Will I get laughed out of the salon for even daring to ask?
>>
>>8808949
Congratulations on kicking the habit! There's really only damage to the nail if your nail tech applies or removes the product incorrectly. Your nails might feel "soft" after product has been removed but that's because the natural oils of your nails pass through slower, increasing the moisture content of your nail and making them more flexible (the feeling goes away in a day or so in my experience). Getting manicures regularly really helps recovering nail biters so no one should laugh because nail care/maintenance is their job.

How do the heavily decorated false nails from bling up etc work? Like can you remove them (carefully i imagine) after wearing a coord and then reuse them later or are you stuck with wearing them until you want to throw them away?

>>8809109
Could be done either way. That pic looks like its probably done freehand since they're not identical shapes. You'd basically draw the shape with a brush or dotting tool and then fill in the negative space around it and leave the center clear. This is one of the styles thats probably easier to do in shellac/gel since you can get very sharp clean lines using alcohol without smudging the base color.

If you mean the 3D bear, its probably not made especially for nails. Try looking at places that sell stuff for jewelry making or deco-den. Ebay and Amazon have some pretty good stuff for cheap, or you could get a load of it on Taobao.
>>
>>8813490
More and more dudes where I am are painting their nails. Granted they're mostly hipsters but it is a thing.

Zoya has a new line called Naked Manicure and it makes your nails shiny and accentuates your natural color. Not as kawaii as the nails posted in here but it's something.

I would specifically look for a salon that calls themselves a Japanese nail salon. Ive only been able to get nails like this done in Japan or at a salon that imports all their products from Japan.

>>
Hey, does anyone have any valentine's themed nails? Nails that an inept person like myself can do are preferred, I know there's some cute stuff in this thread but I don't have the resources for deco nails, and can't wear false ones because of my job.
>>
>>8826759
for a lot of places that's unnecessary, it's more about checking the stylist's portfolio, seeing services offered and starting slow. I found a good salon that doesn't offer sculpting, but their basic nails and gem work/selection is awesome! so i'm loyal to them for that. but the sculpting salon i found has limited gems. it's just about what you're looking for, what fits and how much trust you have in them. then you can become loyal to 1 or 2 places/stylists and get amazing work done.
>>
>>8809309
You can buy some nail adhesive tabs. They don't need acetone to remove, so you can reuse the nail sets.
>>
>>8791306
Actually that's not true. The living part of the nail lives under your cuticle. It receives oxygen and nutrients via the bloodstream. The non living part is what you see as your full fingernail. This part is non living/dead thus requires no air. Covering the nail plate for any amount of time will make no difference to most peoples nails. Mine have had continuous gels on for an entire year with no breaks in between and they are just fine! It's a bad removal and a bad application that will do the damage. 6 years nail tech.

>tfw genetics make my nails grow at an upward slant

My thumb's nail grows pretty straight, but my pinky nail is at a full 45 degree angle.
>>
>>8829412
Are you sure it's genetics? Weird angled nails can be a sign of nutritional deficiencies.
>>
>>8829418

The only deficiency I've been told to have after lab work is vitamin D, which is apparently a common issue where I live. I used to bite my nails and cuticles chronically all my life up until around age 16-17, at one point it got so bad I was suffering from dermatophagia. That might have something to do with it. But I've also been told that there are members from both sides of the family that had nails like this, too.

lol jk but really as long as you're not some filthy neckbeard (apologies if you are) then there isn't much wrong with you at least taking care of your nails. My uncle is a gun-loving, beer drinking, American man who runs his own electric business and gets manicures and pedicures. Granted he doesn't get any color painted but he gets them groomed and maintained.

just to add, as a pro nail tech, right after the massage and before the polishing I clean the nails off with rubbing alcohol on a little piece of gauze or cotton ball. If you don't get the lotion off your nail bed it won't stick and will chip off much faster. Put your cuticle oil on after polishing.
>>
>>8831122
Omg! Thank you! Those look so cute yet easy to do.

>>8830281
You are welcome!

>>8831129
What does the massaging do? Does it simply add to the pampering of a manicure?
>>
>>8831132
"Massage is for increasing circulation and thoroughly working lotion into your skin."

though honestly we mostly do it because it makes women feel fancy, and freshly moisturized and dewey hands look better with their polish so they leave much happier.

How do I stop eating my nails?
I have anxiety and I can't help myself from doing it. I really want to have cute nails but I am a anxiety wreck.
>>
>>8837375
I started chewing gum as an alternative. If your anxiety is as bad as mine is though, you're gonna be chewing through a pack in a day and a half and have a sore jaw constantly.
>>
>>8837374
Well I'm sure they'll last for some time then! I saw on YouTube that some girls just buy those fake nails with the little sticky adhesives from the drug store and wear them while their actual nails grow underneath. That could help with your picking problem perhaps.

it's been a very long time for me too! My sister owes me some money and she suggested treating me to a manicure or pedicure so that's exciting. I don't think I can do acrylics with my job (work with chemicals, have to wear gloves most of the time, etc) but just the pampering of a manicure sounds lovely.
>>
>>8837375
I have the same problem, but I don't have anxiety, it's just a habit

>>8837375
Painting my nails actually helped me to stop biting them. I didn't want to ruin them when they looked so nice.
>>
>>8837375
I found keeping a nail file and buffer on hand in my purse kept me from biting them a lot. I kind of over-filed them a bit, but they were smooth and certainly looked and felt better than biting. Eventually the urge to bite wore down, though I still find myself picking at them if they get a snag.
