Cosplay-related, as in, say, getting a tattoo to accurately cosplay a character with a tattoo or getting a tattoo of a cosplayer/saying related to cosplay/the like: fucking awful.

Fandom tattoos or maybe something cute to commemorate your interest in sewing or something: probably mostly ugly, but I'm sure there are some well-done ones out there that I'd actually like. I've considered getting a small rose crest from RGU somewhere but doubt I'll ever go through with it.

Ultimately, to each their own. I don't personally think getting ink makes someone trashy and think that's kind of an old-fashioned judgment to make about a person these days.

Got my first tattoo a little over a week ago. It's a memorial for a close friend that recently passed. He was a huge star wars fan so my sister asked an artist to draw this for me. I'm not too worried about how it will go with cosplays, lots of characters wear sleeves and tattoo cover does exist.

It's not a matter of hiding how geeky things look over a matter of taste. I hate undesigned tattoos with gradients. Which is essentially most of this thread. Simpler designs look nicer, especially over getting random anime characters all over your body. You will look dumb. In fact, most tattoos look trashy because people get giant random colored tattoos all over their body without putting any thought into design.

This is my opinion however, mostly because I've done some tattoo designs before. If you want a giant ass Betty Boop or basic bitch tribal tats, it's no different than getting Naruto on your leg or something. I think it looks terrible but if you are happy with it then good for you. They are all equally horrible, tacky choices.

I like tattoos of all kinds as long as the art is good (loving the Hamtaro, Vaporeon, Sailor Jupiter, and Junji Ito sleeve in this thread). But personally, I would only go for kind of obscure looking nerd tattoos on my own body.

Here is my only tattoo thus far (And probably my only nerdy throw back. I wanted something simple to start). It's Scott Pilgrim related, and even though no one gets what it's referencing, I still really love it after 3 years.

Your tattoo looks like shit done by a total amateur. The shading is shit, the face is seriously lopsided and drawn so smashed flat that it's clear your assist didn't know perspective. The water is flowing up the tail for some bizarre reason, even though it would flow better, more realistically and more dynamically if it went down. The types were drawn like a toad (or mewtwo) instead of like cat or fox paws. Vaporeon's tail is mamallian like a dolphin and has always been so canonically, so why did they draw it frilly? It's also got some wierd ass milk mustache on its lower lip and there is an enormous glaring tangent where the poorly rendered head fin clips the spine fin ridge. Aaand speaking of the head fin, they clearly drew a limp seaweed dick instead of a head fin. Did you even show them a picture of a vaporeon? Did they think it was a salamander? As someone who has drawn these stupid ass tattoos on my body several times these pics become even more cringeworthy.

Especially the first one.
The problem is that the artstyle and thus all references of TTGL have short torsos, long legs. If you mimic what the references show you get exactly what that poor dude has. Awkward looking lines with little connection to each other.
To make it look even relatively good he should have elongated the design. The downmost lines need to follow his hip bones and point more assertively towards his crotch. The half moon things extending from the bands on his arms need to reach higher and be longer. The bands on his upper arms should have way more space between them, what were they even thinking? To top it off the lines about his shoulders and torso look sickly thin compared to the others about the design...
At least he didn't do the mistake of pic number two where he connected the shoulder circles with the neck lines.

I have a Time Gear, ala Pokemon Mystery Dungeon on my upper right arm. I wanted a Pokémon tattoo that wasn't obviously Pokémon (its been a big part of my life) and it fits the bill pretty well there.

The thing is, uh, it's on diagonally. The tattoo artist rotated it to fit my arm better without saying and I didn't spot it in the mirror with the stencil since I assumed it looked off because it was mirrored. Had a good old fashioned mental breakdown for that later. It does look fine and I like it now that I've calmed down, but seriously if you're gonna get a tattoo double check everything before committing, including the stencil.

While I'm here, what tips do the cosplayers here have to cover tattoos during conventions? I'm aware of the lipstick trick, but I want to hear some alternate tried and tested methods as well if there are any.
