Question.
Why are all the socks knee highs?
My knees are uglay from years of dancing, is it a general consensus to have utk over otk?
>>
>>8762476
psst anon you fucked up the name field
bump for interest
There's a private girls school (middle-high) near my college and their plaid skirts are cute and turn up at the local goodwill a lot, the only problem is that the ones that show up are always huge sizes
Guess I'll just keep checking back or improve my sewing skills and alter one
>>
>>8762505
Well, official high school uniforms usually have knee high socks as the uniform standard, and nanchatte is based on real high school uniforms, so that would be why they all wear knee socks.

That being said, I think it's generally fine to wear thigh highs or tights, as long as you remember to make it look professional.
>>
>>8762516
Got it. I usually wear black tights anyway, I feel thigh highs get a bit too much attention.

The same reason any teenager does, because they can't be bothered to put them on properly and their parents pay for them so they don't care that it wrecks them?
>>
>>8763916
They can't be bothered to put them on properly. These are shoes that these girls wear all day, ever day almost. I also do that with my casual shoes, especially when I'm in a rush. I think I did it when I was in high school and had a school uniform too, but mostly because the straps on my shoes were so worn that there was no point in wearing them normally anymore. They were loose even if I had my feet in.
>>
>>8763916
Loafers are expensive, and from experience, if your feet grow from size 6 to 11 in a little less than two years, your parents just get fed up.
My shoes never fit, so I just stepped on the heals so I can get another few months worth out of the shoes.

Trying to find this on walmart's website, is it on there? I'm looking but I don't know which category these fit in, I have a big foot so I'm hoping burgermart carries it in my size.
>>
>>8769518
I can't find them on the website either BUT they do run big I usually wear a size 7 and these I had to get a 6.
>>
>>8768458
Well I have seen plenty of randoseru (if that is how you use it in the plural sense), and the guys wear basically the same as Shinji in Evangelion. Everyone wears white atheletic shoes, and the girls will almost never do anything cute with their hair. Its always down or in a low ponytail. Phone straps are common with the girls, and the most interesting thing on them other than that will be an occasional cute jacket or sweater. Its surprisingly boring where I am at. Except for street clothes, that's where they look adorable and trendy.

>>
>>8769601
>went and looked

I saw many disturbing things but a school uniform general wasn't one of them.
>>
>>8769574
Japanese schools are notoriously restrictive about uniforms and dress codes, so it makes sense they'd all look frumpy. All the nanchatte and kogal pics we see here are when school isn't scheduled/in session. Or when they've already graduated.
>>
>>8769619
I know, my first comment was about how different they actually are than their portrayal in anime. I wasn't really comparing them to the fashion style.
>>
>>8769619
But I also wonder about how these schools feel about makeup on their students.
>>
>>8769624
I was in Japan and some of my Japanese friends were high school students, they said most schools won't allow any makeup(or at least noticeable makeup...) Some of my friends mentioned getting away with really light natural makeup.
>>
>>8769574
I've watched a couple of YouTube videos from English-speaking girls on exchange in Japan--so this makes me an expert on this topic--and every one of them that has done a "me in my uniform" video has talked about how the girls are not allowed to wear make-up, not allowed to wear earrings or jewelry, and not allowed to do anything with their hair except wear a low ponytail. (They're also not allowed to dye them "unnatural colors," which apparently caused one blonde exchange student problems, since she claimed she had to dye it black to get them off her case.)

Their skirts are also always frumpishly long, but, it seems a universal act that they all roll them up to at least their knees, and somehow get away with it. They all always complain that "some girls roll it all the way to their butt" but of course watching anime, you'd be led to believe that "barely-butt-covered" is standard issue.

Also contrary to what anime has taught us, apparently not all high schools require uniforms. And so for those, a lot girls wear the street fashion version. Schools that do have uniforms often require students to never wear them outside of school, so if you see what looks like JK walking around in cute uniforms at Disneyland or on the weekend, it's most likely nannchatte seifuku.

(I'm now off to watch a few videos on neurology; I'm going to try some brain surgery this weekend.)

Speaking of blazers, are there any other factors to tell what makes a blazer good for nanchatte? I keep finding ones for business women that give the wrong look in the front.

Those are loafers, not penny loafers. I suppose it will work but if you're looking to duplicate the look in the details you should look for actual penny loafers

The one before is definitely costumy. The fabric doesn't look as thick as it should be, and the way the ends of the blazer are slightly rolling up look bad.

Pic related is more natural, but it doesn't look quite like the typical nanchatte blazer becuase of the cut. However, the school emblem/crest makes it fit really well together with the outfit.

Again, this one is very stylized. However, it does look nice. Nanchatte seifuku is literally a fake uniform, so if you are going for a mix between styles, blazers/outerwears are probably pretty flexible.
What looks weird to me about this blazer is most notably the arm folds. It doesn't look thick enough.

And this is the typical blazer. The traditional one associated with nanchatte. It's got a bit of a waist, but it's pretty much boxy/rectangular. The pose the girl is doing, with the unbuttoned blazer and mostly-fitted cardigan, is the most flattering way of wearing this to accentuate your waist.

Another blazer. It doesn't look very costumy, but is definitely different from the standard. I think it's the three buttons combined with the brown that makes it so different.

/fa/ guy hopping over to give some advice. I don't recommend Walmart penny loafers, they tend to be made of thin vinyl over a mesh substrate, in a month or two the substrate will crack and the vinyl will flake off. For $70-100 you can get penny loafers with genuine leather uppers. Some common brands for them are Bass, Florsheim, and Rockport although you can also get Bostonians from Macys. These still aren't all that great but at least it isn't just a shoe shaped object that will fall apart in a month. If you are willing to spend up to $300 you can get full grain leather penny loafers from Alden, or Allen Edmond, but realistically I don't think it's practical. As much as /fa/ talks (or at least used to talk) about them lasting for decades and getting leather sole shoes resoled the cost is impractical with how quickly I wear through them. I simply buy $100 shoes and discard them when they are done.

Last one. This looks very natural to me.

To recap, nanchatte blazers are typically:
- boxy/rectangular with a bit of waist (fitted, not accentuating)
- navy/black but occasionally brown/cream (though more pop colors may work)
- Two buttons in front (usually gold)
- Thick material with few wrinkles
- Pockets on both sides, usually with lapel
- Two buttons for sleeves, no cuff
- Emblem/decoration at chest (not necessary/as a boost)

That's all I can think of for choosing your blazer. If anyone else can chip in about their own opinions/experiences, that would be great.

Out of curiosity, if you saw someone wearing this on the street would your mind jump to kink or would you think of it as preppy fashion?
>>
>>8774039

I avoid cosplay grade blazers when doing uniform cosplay because the construction and material are always subpar. I get most of my blazers and suits from thrift shops because even the cheapest suit is usually still better than any off the rack costume. I'm not as familiar with how a girl's blazer should fit so I won't offer specific advice but there is some general rules that aren't gender specific.

Your shoulders should fit properly, its one of the areas on a jacket that are impractical to fix if it doesn't fit right to begin with. Also check the length of the sleeve, it usually isn't too hard to shorten a sleeve but if its too short, it's usually no good. If the sleeve has functional cuffs or fake button holes it may not be possible to correct the length.

Look at the size of the arm hole scythe. If it is too large and drops too low the jacket is generically sized and won't fit as well. You'll get better fitment from one with a smaller arm hole.

A blazer has patch pocket, like the back pockets on a pair of jeans. An orphaned suit jacket has flap pockets or jetted pockets. If you're looking for a blazer then you want patch pockets.

Depending on where you live you may want a lined or unlined jacket. However that is different from canvasing which gives a jacket shape. You may already have heard of this when discussing structured and unstructured jackets. Basically there are unstructured jackets with no canvasing (i.e. cosplay grade), fused interfaced jackets with only interfacing to give it structure, half-canvased, and fully-canvased jackets. Basically it gets more expensive as you go up towards full canvasing, however for cosplay most of my jackets are a summer wool fabric with a fused interface and they hold their shape well.

was in japan in the summer and iirc there's an entire store on takeshita doori dedicated to this stuff.
>>
>>8774044

Well as long as it's not done up in the slutty Catholic schoolgirl style I wouldn't think kink. At school we had a dozen exchange students visiting from a school in Japan and they all wore their uniforms. It is all in the execution.
>>
>>8774065
Can vouch for this. Unfortunately I didn't end up buying anything so I don't have any bag or item that would have the store name on it. I definitely remember going in though because I was looking around for nanchatte-esque stores for loafers and I only found one. I remember looking at those belt things that they use to shorten their skirts when I was there too.
>>
>>8773990
well these would be for work as I'd not want something too nice that could potentially be ruined.

Thank you for help!
>>
>>8774090
Did you happen to see the CONOMi storefront while you were there? I know their main location is somewhere on Takeshita-Dōri.
>>
>>8774067
Where exactly would that line be? I'd not want to cross it accidentally.

Also, in looking for some basics I found this site:

>>

Not the /fa/ anon, but don't have your skirt be so short your ass is going to fall out and don't do porno style pigtails. That's it really.
>>
>>8774119
I honestly remember very few store names lol I just wandered around a lot (first time in Japan). I googled it and the storefront doesn't look familiar but also on the map it looks like it's on a side street that branches off the main street so I might have missed it.
>>
>>8774115

Penny loafers wouldn't necessarily be any more expensive, it's just a different style of shoe. I used to wear penny loafers to work when I had a white collar job.
>>
>>8774130
so following the standard "fingertips on the sides" length?
Also guessing the cardigans and added pieces aid as well.
>>
Might be a silly question, but does anyone have any make up tips for this look?

I've been doing a thin accent on the upper eyelids with subtle blush and a matte complexion.
>>
>>8774126

I think it's easy to see the line: remember that Britney Spears video for Baby One More Time? Schoolgirl kink. Actual Catholic schoolgirls in uniform? Not even remotely kinky. There ya go!
>>
>>8774126

I would say take inspiration from 1950's prep rather than schoolgirl Britney.
>>
>>8774119
I know where it is.
Walking down the street from tacky tourist sign, it ShOuLD be the second? left you see. I'll google maps and double check now.
>>
>>8774157
Correction. First left.
So. To summarize.
>stand under touristy sign
>walk pass mcdonalds
>turn left
>take 10 steps. 7 if you're tall. Conomi should be on your left.
>while that upscale fashion sister brand of Conni is on the right.

Also. My keyboard corrects takeshita into take a shit. L O L

I have and can vouch that they're authentic. I also went to the store on Takeshita doori when in Japan last month. Bought some skirts and accessories. Really nice quality. Also a brown blazer, it's really great. CD Japan prices aren't really all that different, but they only use EMS shipping. Forwarding with SAL probably ends up cheaper

If anyone is interested, Conomi lucky packs are up right now on the official website.

I've got a similar Bass pair in burgundy and another Rockport one with rubber soles. I got mine at thrift shops for about $8 each.
>>
>>8774189
Usually I'm all over fukubukuro but it looks like it's $50 for a hoodie, a ribbon tie, and a bag? I mean, the bag itself is about $45 but the hoodie seems an odd choice for a fukubukuro.
>>
>>8774461
Yeah I agree. The lucky pack is worth it for the bag alone. But the sweater kind of sucks.
>>
You know what I was thinking.
Should we start a Facebook group for sales? Maybe we can get something small going.
>>
>>8774583

Yeah, I was disappointed when I saw the hoodies too. But those Conomi hoodies apparently sell for over 7000 yen for some reason (at least according to list price on the store). I dunno what makes them so expensive, they look like regular old pullovers to me. Burando nanchatte?

The bags are neat and probably worth it though. They got some interesting colors. And I can never have enough ribbons.
>>
Does anyone have good ideas for a Holiday coord?

I'm working and attending a potluck that day, ski wanted something to work, but keep going back to these footless leggings I have.

I was digging through old Jfashion mags I have and I don't wear this style but there's a whole small pamphlet dedicated to this, would anyone be interested if I took pics/scanned it?

I'd say subtle is better. Just enough to look nice but doesn't go too bold unless you're doing a kogal look.

Some googling led me to a whole bunch of brands I didn't know had nanchatte stuff. Mostly from here:
http://www.narumiya-online.jp/webshop/special/ec_sp.html?SPECIAL=1083

The only brands I knew about before were Conomi and East Boy, so this was a great help~ Now I can add a bunch of new ones to my list: Love Toxic, pom ponette, Lindsay, Blue Cross, and mezzo piano
>>
>>8776148
That's great! I actually love Pom Ponette and Mezzo Piano, could anyone kindly tell me what they mean by Freshers styling? I've always wondered but as my Japanese is nonexistent I couldn't figure it out, it's always used to market this style though.

turning 30 soon, I may look a bit younger but I definitely don't look under 25 and that's perhaps being generous. Because of my age I tend to wear looks that are slightly off the radar as 'school uniform' and could perhaps read more as 'preppy', at least to normie folk here in the west.

I've also started to experiment with more retro, late taisho early showa type styles which I think suit a more mature look, particularly as it can resemble ladies fashion of the 20s and 30s (and again, tends to slip under the radar as nanchatte to all but fellow j-fash friends).

I do admire the kind of stuff posted here from afar though and may on occasion wear more obvious school type uniform to a convention or if I go to an alt club where people do pretty much what they want and no one cares.

I'm not sure if by this point it still counts as 'nanchatte' though, not that it especially matters as I don't refer to it as such, I keep the influences to myself pretty much.

I'm 25 and I wear nanchatte. I have a black seifuku that got me a whole bunch of compliments from random ladies.

If you have youthful features it really doesn't look out of place, although sometimes people mistake me for a high school student. And as >>8776716 said you can tone it down and make it more preppy or vintage if you feel like you can't get away with a straightforward outfit.
>>
>>8777825>>8776716

One of the nice things about nanchatte is that you can go all out or tone it down and it wouldn't look out of place walking down the street.
>>
>>8777909

Agreed. And depending on the style, it can honestly make great office wear. I wear the dress shirt/skirt/tie combo to work often, but one day I decided to bust out the blazer since I felt like it, and a coworker jokingly asked if I was going to an interview (for another company) later that day.

This. I generally like the look of buruma/sukumizu. I'd definately be too shy to wear the school gym uniform one though so I'd probably wear pic related kinda like from K-On
>>
>>8785322
Yea, I like the classic buruma also, though I can see why schools today would not use them; if anything they'd make great room wear. I do wonder if manufacture still make them, much less sell them.
>>
>>8785273
I love my sukumizu. Though, unless you're really paying attention, it just looks like a normalfag one piece swimsuit.

As for the gym uniforms...I spent most of my childhood in eastern Europe. By the time I went to school, the bloomer type uniforms went out of style there but my mother and her sister totally wore them all the way through primary school and possibly in high school as well. (for reference they were born in the mid 60s). I inherited a set that stayed in good condition. I didn't like it; my grandma tried to convince me to wear it for when I was running around with friends getting dirty. I always felt too self conscious however because they exposed soooo much leg...I didn't mind tight elastic shorts, but I liked to wear ones that were actually knee length.

Okay, sorry for the tl;dr, that's my bloomer story. Now I actually find them endearing, but somewhat fetishy on myself. Maybe I'd wear them at home for working out, but I'd probably be too self conscious to do so in public lololol.

Sells both male and female sukumizu, with a wide selection of buruma and modern gym uniform. They have some fetish-y clothes, but it's completely separate from everything else.

Really basic compared to the other link, but if you don't feel comfortable buying from them, the this is the next best thing. The links opens to a new page instead of loading right there, which can get annoying quickly.

I recommend this seller, I also got some uniform cardigans from them and everything is nice and heavy.

I don't wear them but I've been thinking of getting a sukumizu for the swimming pool, after all it looks like a normie swimsuit...
Besides that I really like ones like pic related but yeah they're pretty much just fetish wear.

Selfposting~ my roommate has tons of cute nanchatte gear, so all my roommates pieced together our own outfits.

you look so cute, the style really suits you. It's nice to see people using tights and making them work too, I think it adds a slightly more mature touch that makes it very wearable.

I want to buy Haruta loafers off Rakuten but I'm torn between fake leather and real leather. Does anyone have experience with Haruta loafers? Should I just invest $80 for a good pair of leather loafers?

You are never going to be a teenage Japanese fashion model. I'm sorry, anon.

You can wear loafers anywhere, and they're perfect for job interviews and office settings. Invest in a pair, ideally real leather as fake leather tends to flake and crack quickly.

Whatever, I'm still gonna wear it.

I am in desperate need to find just a plain blazer like in...
>>8784779
Any links on Taobao? I don't mind spending a pretty (now discontinued) penny on a good quality blazer. All the shops in the google doc list either don't have any blazers available to buy, or have them but the reviews are bad (as in they wrinkle easily).

I'll post a few photos in the mean time.
