This thread is for ouji and aristocrat (aka "boystyle") discussion. Boystyle refers to the masculine counterparts of lolita and aristocrat fashions. Google ouji, aristocrat, EGA, etc., before asking questions here.

Read the whole thread before asking any questions here.

OC and selfposts encouraged! Picspam discouraged, we've seen most of it by now.

DISCUSSION PROMPT: With Buttcape's blog down, what's the best up-to-date boystyle guide to link to in future OPs? Should we make our own, like the lolitas did?

in any case, what i would suggest is, rather than derail, when the femme aristo thread fills or drops off the board, its next edition can be open to all types of aristo. this thread, which has built up a discussion community, will stay open to all types of boystylers. no reason to exclude or chase anyone out of a thread.

Get a mens' Roland. You need room in the measurements for breathing etc. I have a mens' Roland despite being a woman with a bust of 80cm. They're fine. The ladies size Roland also has a ridiculously tiny waist - about 65cm on the garment itself.

Anyone know where to find cool hats? Preferably like tricorn hats, but cool top hats would also be ok. AatP's are pretty cool, but most of them are out of stock, and I feel like most of the ones on Etsy either look cheap or are overdone (too many feathers and things, to the point that it looks silly). I've heard there are some on taobao, but I'm not sure which shops to check.

Closet Child's men's shop isn't a reliable place to find boystyle-appropriate pieces, but sometimes pic related crops up.

Does it bother anyone else that h. Naoto doesn't make his clothes symmetric by the prints? For example, >>8771335 bottom left looks bad in my eye since the print isn't 'mirrored'. It looks like it's badly sewn because of the print.

I know it's related to not to get waste fabric. It just would look better symmetric.

I hope someone who'll get some use out of this reads it - Peacockalorum's large/regular sized tricorns are $60 if I remember correctly, and I bought one thinking it'd be worth the price. It's comically tiny, but not mini-hat tiny, the feather is pathetic and the brooch was meh and cheaply made. I also bought some bows which came on uncomfortable, plain metal headbands despite no headband being shown in the picture (so I assumed they were clips) and my ivory bow has a white center (the knot part of the bow). I'm terrified of confrontation so I never made a review, which is my fault entirely, but I hope maybe I can prevent someone else from being as disappointed.

The bow in question was pic related in ivory, although now I do see the ugly cheap headband attached to it. Either way, for a $17 headbow ordered in a specific color, I think it's fair to expect the entire bow to be that color?

technotropism and ghostintheforest are quite tall, pic related, and they wear brand. techno did an unboxing video for a unisex AatP robe (Chat Noir?) on YouTube and mentions the fit as being a bit small compared to men's sizes. if he is twiggy he should be all right, shoulders and armholes might be his biggest issue.

another option is to shorten long pants and sleeves if length is the only issue. tailoring long pants to be short pants would fit the aesthetic.

you can also get away with a plainer but fitting blouse if you have a good gilet. something like pic related seems to be hiding a lot of tall person troubles: folded sleeves, tall boots concealing the ends of the pants, and an eyecatching gilet (sleeveless Roland?) that draws the eyes away from the rolled-up sleeves.

this convo inspires me to make a request of our resident vloggers and aspiring vloggers: a good video topic is height/size and brand options. just talking about and demonstrating your own size and fits would be helpful.

170. I'm higher than most of Japanese men. I've no chance for a boyfriend ever. Too big for ouji.

aw anon. ouji is versatile, you can wear nice fashionable pants even if the shorts are too short or whatever. in pic related, the styles at the bottom say "Ouji Style" and "Ouji style in previous issues," and the look with long pants can work well for tall folk.

additionally, famous ouji technotropism is your height and makes it work imo.

cannot help with the boyfriend situation ofc

actually, even ghostintheforest is taller than you. pic related. you are fine, just avoid tiny brands and buy men's sizes when possible.
>>
>>8781885
Which brands are considered tiny and which ones are considered normal or big? I'm curious. Additionally, despite being tall I can fit into most of big and medium sizes. How do I know if they're really fitting me and when I'm stuffing myself into too small clothes? I don't want to spend any more money just to end up being nouji in ill fitted clothes.
>>
>>8781874
Uh, he's much taller than 1.7m
I'm a bit taller than that and he stands way over me.
I have no idea how he pulls it off, maybe because he's so skinny. Anyway you can always modify things and you don't have to use exclusively brand pants, for example. Especially if you're more aristo.
Shit anon, 170cm is barely 5'7" and that's just beginning to be slightly tall. Only insecure manlets would care.
>>
on the subject of size, this street snap features someone 170cm wearing "gosu ouji" (gothic ouji), with a brand list of each item: >>8783070

175cm, 75/64/86 measurement female here who fits into lady's sizes fine. Atelier Boz's lady's fits perfect even though the waist part somewhat starts to sit on my lower ribcage. I have yet to buy brand pants though and I am worried those might hit my hips and not fit.

Planning on buying a AaTP jacket soon and hoping it'll fit. The sizing seems larger than Boz.
>>
>>8785083
Boz tends to be wider in the shoulders, i have found, but that is in their mens sizes.

a lot of brand pants in ladies sizes seem to be around 90cm at the waist, so i think you will be all right.
>>
It's finally getting colder and snowier so pictures of winter ouji coords are welcome
>>
>>8785083
Don't worry about your hips, worry about the length. Depending on my weight, my hips are 88-90cm (although mostly butt, so somewhat squishier than a wide pelvis) and I haven't had any trouble with brand pants. I'm only 158cm though and find the inseam and rise good on me, so I guess watch out for that if you're planning to get long pants not shorts

i was checking out Deorart's English shop today. http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/products?term.brand_id=100000102&term.media=APPAREL&opt.is_group_default=1&order=new&page=1

they are a brand that consistently releases items labelled "ouji" that are often overlooked, and they have a wide range of sizes (small around 34cm shoulders i think, large around 41cm+) and items under $100. they release more punk than ouji but i thought you might find them worth checking out.

what is your ideal ouji "look"?
>>
>>8786867
forget what the words themselves "really mean." if someone in my comm or on FB describes themselves as a shota, does this mean they probably like shotacon? or is there another meaning that became common among young women who are professed fujoshi?

i do not know whether to feel creeped out or not when a female boystyler uses words like seme/uke or shota to describe their look. i am hoping it is like when lolitas call themselves lolis, that is a playful thing, not related to porn, and therefore not an indication that they are getting off on the idea of little boys being sexy.
>>
>>8790858
they probably just mean that they look like a young boy, not that they're into shota. (probably)
>>
How hard is it to get into it if you're 5'10" 210 lbs? No, I'm not fat.
>>
>>8790939
depends on your measurements. wide shoulders will have trouble fitting into brand blouses and jackets, a wide waist or long rise could impair your ability to wear brand shorts or pants. read upthread for discussions of height, and visit here to get an idea of what different-heighted boystylers look like: http://palaceofprinces.tumblr.com/MeetthePrinces

most brands are made for slim Japanese-sized people, but some Taobao brands do custom sizing.

>>
>>8790956
That means you should try to get things custom made for your shoulders and chest, and rely on open coats for brand main pieces. You're tall and presumably muscular, so an aristo look is better than cutesy ouji would be.
Do you have a pair of quality black trousers?
If you were fat, your situation would be completely different. You can afford to wear form fitting stuff, but your chest, shoulders, and (praise Brodin) thighs will be your limiting factor, rather than fat people, who have most trouble with waist.
Check out fanplusfriend.
>>
>>8790956
if you are thick, cutesy ouji may not work, but historic-inspired ouji like pic related could. look to historic men's fashions and use brand accessories to accent.

aristocrat could also work, but it relies a lot on drape for its silhouette. either way, fan+friend is a good place to start like the other anon said

they are closer to sweet and classic ouji than gothic. the first two are a bit OTT, and all three are definitely more princely feeling, the way hime lolita has a more dressed-up/royal feel than non-hime.

pic related has an example of "sweet ouji" on the left, with more examples below it. you can have sweet in dark or muted colors or jewel tones; what separates it from "classic ouji" (examples in lower right of >>8781874) are the motifs in prints, the playful or "younger" look.

but this is open to interpretation and discussion. i have never seen anyone discuss these 2 scans and what they mean for ouji substyles, if anything. a lot of people seem to think sweet ouji means pastels and girly motifs, but to me the playing cards, Mad Hatterness, florals, as well as the shape (shorter or poofier) mark them as closer to sweet.

but also fairly close to classic. if you want to define your style, perhaps "sweet-classic ouji" would get the least disagreement.
>>

yes. the trick is to make sure it looks purposeful rather than accidental. if you have a piece that has both navy and black, like a pinstripe pattern, that will help. otherwise, maybe make sure your blacks are true and will not photograph as navy.

pic related, i cannot tell which pieces are black or navy depending on the pic. if the blacks were darker, and the legwear less bright, it might look more cohesive. (it is her first ouji coord and this is a nitpick, it's not nouji at all to me, just an illustration of a black x navy coord that almost works.)
>>
>>8798093
sorry for small low res image, but here, the colors are more clearly marked. the navy blouse has a clearly black jabot and trim. you can tell there are 2 distinct colors complementing each other.

>>
>>8799529
that is a cool vest but i am not sure black pants would look right, especially since the navy of the vest appears to be almost a faded black, so the result might be a bit muddy. i think it can work as a first coord if that is what you have to work with, but if you are looking to buy pants i would seek a pair in a color the vest uses.

it does look like the rabbit brooch has black on it, and you might be able to bring out the black and navy with accessories that use both colors.

but honestly, if it fits your body and you carry yourself with confidence and a smile, you can get away with wearing just about anything.

for a busy print like that i would recommend a solid color, just a color that is used in the print (a matching shade of blue, white, or red, for example).

i think if you really like this vest and have the funds, better to get it while you can and save up for different pants. finding a good print for boystyle is very difficult, and stuff like that hardly ever shows up secondhand so once it's sold out you might be SOL. you are taking a risk either way, but it is not like you're getting married, they're just clothes.

good luck and post results!

have you worn non-casual ouji in public without anyone with you who was wearing jfash?
>>
>>8805454
Yeah, often. I'm at a liberal arts college, and I make a point of wearing jfash at least once a week.
I've only gotten questions and compliments; if you wear something suitlike, trim, and black, people like it, at least where I'm from.
>>
>>8805521
aside from pants length and accessorizing, ouji is not far from what i would wear daily anyway: collared shirt, vest, hat... i think the suitlike nature does help it seem more normal than lolita.

do you have an unusual style, like mature sweet, punk, or dolly-kei/classic fusion?

She isnt active on her fb at all, the last photo of her dressing up is from April from around the time PoP had their event. On her fb there are photos of her in the hospital for something in Sept.

I havent seen any signs of her selling her stuff, but she has been radio silent.
>>
>>8815362
Actually with some super stalking I found a more recent photo of her dressed up. Which was better than what I thought at first which is that she may have sold/given away a lot of her stuff to some of her friends since it seemed suspicious that suddenly someone close to her had all the same stuff. I guess that she is not posting stuff on purpose then, but is attending some stuff locally.

lostprinceofmar (a lot of reblogs but also good OC, both ouji and lolita)

splashu (kind of inactive, but showed promise, hard to say what the OC to reblog ratio will be)
konekoanni (lots of reblogs, and OC is divided between lolita, ouji, and cosplay; her handmade ouji is awesome)
victorfaretina (LOTS of OC, including lolita and ouji doll designs; one of the more famous oujis, a lot of people don't like his face, but he's still going strong after oujis like bakasoseji, aerynsys, buttcape etc. dropped off the online ouji radar)

reposting the poll i made regarding future gens: http://strawpoll.me/6136158/r

i figure unless people in this thread are annoyed at aristo questions and discussions, nothing needs to change. there is also no reason to prevent the one male EGA wearer who would prefer to post in an EGA gen from doing so (they said they wear both femme and masc aristo). the amount of discussion and interest in male gothic styles in general is so low it seems a nonissue; people can post where they like if each thread accepts the discussion.

for me, my EGA has more in common with ouji and overlaps with it, which is what i also see happening in Japanese communities and in brand marketing.

but i noticed the lolita gen called this the "ouji" thread rather than the boystyle thread, which previous lolita gen OPs did not do. so i worry someone will try to force an issue where there isn't one and would appreciate /ouG/'s thoughts.

i think they might be seen as sweet due to being more fanciful or fantasy-like, while the ones labelled classic have, like you say, a vintage look.

I think you underestimate what you would need to do. Casual ouji is very iffy because it can easily fall into nouji, so you will have to keep a level of complexity to the outfits. Which of course will make it more work to change.

Like many people have this idea that they will wear like lolita to school everyday but when it comes down to it there are so much more practical things to wear. Ouji is going to be the same way, you are going to have a fuck it point where you wont want the hassle especially if you are knee deep in the semester.
>>
>>8830485
I get it is the whole no makeup look but it looks so weird to have only half of an eyebrow.
>>
>>8832978
Just wear it outside of classes, such as at weekends. Like >>8832991 says, it can all to easily fall into being 'nouji' territory, and you'll end up looking scuffier than you otherwise would were to you say, look for a nice smart-casual look. Plus, that would likely be more comfortable. Especially when you ahve a full day of classes. Besides, what you think of as being 'classy' others might not see it as such.
I've been in the uni environment for over ten years now, and I wear both femme and homme aristocrat, with a little bit of lolita. Trust me, save the style for free time. Dress nicely by all means during class, but really go to town outside of classes.

This thread is for ouji and aristocrat (aka "boystyle") discussion. Boystyle refers to the masculine counterparts of lolita and aristocrat fashions. There is a lot of overlap between these styles, and different people use different terms to describe them. Consider this a thread for those whose style is on the right half of Buttcape's Lolita Family Triangle: http://www.kawacura.com/moripress/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/0dmmLH6-350x350.jpg
