> As we are basically at the end of the year now, what did you think of 2015 overall in terms of HS cosplays?
> What are some of your favorite winter themed HS cosplays?
I still love that group.
>what did you think of 2015 overall in terms of HS cosplays?
I feel like there was a huge drop in the amount of homestuck at cons. Otakon Saturday still had a good amount of cosplayers, but Friday was just pathetic. Maybe the game will give us a second wind, but the current hiatus fells like the nail in the coffin.
And with that I'll just throw it out there that (if there's still interest for it, of course) I'll make my year end review in a week or two, and that if anyone have any new (or old) names they want me to take a look at, I'd like to know about them!
Crunchy Anon, you deserve it.
I have to say it felt like that last thread was never going to max out. Also my guess for still stands.
It doesn't help that a lot of people who've been cosplaying HS for a while have gone through so many of the outfits. I'd like to do a new costume this year but don't have any ideas besides AU hell.
I can understand this. Do you have any characters to play cosplay bingo on? Every character have at LEAST three outfits (standard/GT/dreamer), more if you include the baseline AUs (speciesswap/R63). Most also have a bunch of other alt outfits.
If you want to stick to Homestuck, that is. You might just feel done with it.
aradiasprite has always been my dream hs cosplay for some reason, and it's so weird for me to think i finally finished it and am wearing it to katsu. i also had aradiabot and disciple on my list, and was doing john bingo once upon a time, but i have a feeling aradiasprite is gonna be my last homestuck cosplay, which is weird to think about since i've done SO many cosplays from it and it's what got me into cosplay in the first place. i just feel like most of the outfits are so simple, which was great when i was first starting out, but i'm really wanting to challenge myself more in terms of sewing lately and homestuck doesn't lend itself very well to that.
> i just feel like most of the outfits are so simple, which was great when i was first starting out, but i'm really wanting to challenge myself more in terms of sewing lately and homestuck doesn't lend itself very well to that.
This is a pretty good point.
Requesting some pretty neat looking, technically challenging cosplays?
i don't know about that but at ctcon there was a panel run by one of the game developers and she was really cool. and at ax they had a sim where you played as joey and explored her room. it looked really good so i hope it comes out soon
Not to add to the disquiet about the game then, but it certainly appears that a number of higher ups who would seem to be important to the development process have left What Pumpkin.
A quick google of "LinkedIn" and "What Pumpkin" and you can see people who now list their employment history as "previous" include the Senior Art Director, the Creative Director, Director of Software Engineering among others...
Hopefully they're moving on because their roles are finished and not the game is going through another ridiculous phase of development hell.
apparently most of the devs all left in october/november. they havent even finished part 1 yet! smells like dev drama to me.
hiveswap twitter and tumblr accounts which were fairly active went dark over 4 months ago. ironically the day after hussie posted the news update plugging them. they even purged all their tumblr posts with any reference to any of the devs but you can find em with the wayback machine.
To add to the drama-rama: it seems any of the former people listed as such on WP's page are gone.
But more telling, Rachel has deleted or rendered blank her tumblr and twitter accounts.
One must wonder if there was perhaps a breakup to cause this sort of shakeup.
Might be a dumb question but I'll ask anyway
I've got some grey Ben Nye that I haven't used in... a year and a half. Same with Snazzaroo. Does this stuff expire? I bought it a long time ago thinking I'd cosplay a troll but I never ended up using it. But I didn't see the need to throw it away either, so it's sort of just there. If it expires though I'll just throw it out. I also still don't see myself cosplaying a troll but my mind could always be changed, plus I might still be able to use it for another cosplay.
Waterbased paints don't expire. Greasebased have a technical expiration date, and are also more prone to cultivating bacteria. I don't think it's much of an issue, though. As long as it smell and look alright and isn't like a decade old.
Do as you feel. My huge 55ml tub of kryolan is past 2yrs at this point, but I use it regularly and don't think it's an issue. If you're more pedantic then maybe. It's the same as with mascaras, foundations, etc.
I actually like this persons fins.
I think based on their other posts on the subject sounds like they're trying to do more a callout post than even bothering with hiveswap delays at all.
So now we can debate about the op rather than the actual issue! Yay for misdirection and pointless shaming!
Less SJWank, more cosplay
Aside from the horns, this is pretty neat.
As someone who was raised on mid-00s emo, this is pretty cute.
Not very much mituna, though.
Or I suppose "raised" isn't the correct term. More like "got my preferenced established by puberty".
Apparently >>8758678 had a group.
Mostly posting this because I'm pretty into the fins. Went to their blog in hopes of a walkthrough or something, but they just make all these pretty cringey gifsets...
Anon, I know you hate discussion of the state of the comic/game and do a tag dump to try to kill it, but surely you've noticed that the thread dies for days on end when you do that, right? Whether you personally like it or not, wankery is the only thing that keeps this thread alive nowadays so maybe you should just deal.
Maybe actually discuss it, then, as opposed to just barking about how the poster is such a SJW or whatever.
Keep in mind that the HSG thread got kicked for being off topic. I'm not the one who usually dump shit, though, and IMO wank is fine, but you should probably keep it on topic.
>got kicked for being off topic
IIRC that was two years ago and they were constantly discussing nothing that had to do with homestuck. Someone going on a tangent for five whopping replies isn't the end of the world since it's related to an on-topic post.
while this is a cosplay thread and the main point is cosplay i think a little side talk about state of the fandom, hiveswap failures ect is fine (its hs related and you could argue the state of the fandom has an impact on homestuck cosplay)
I see your point, obviously it's hard to keep the thread going when a lot of the topics have already been discussed. Still, none of >>8758663
are really relevant to the fandom or the topic, at least in my opinion?
I don't know. I do feel like we don't really discuss cosplays very much at all at this point, which is a shame.
It's relevant to the fandom if you squint - someone bringing important news about the comic front and center has been hounded out because this is how a lot of the new generation of 'stuckaboos behave. Not really cosplay related but definitely HS related in my opinion.
I hear you though, there's not much actual cosplay related news. What's going on with the old BNFs? I follow a few but I feel like a lot of them are focused on other things.
Well, if we assume people ARE leaving Homestuck, if you had to pick ONE cosplay from your favourite HS cosplayer before they left (including those who no longer do it), what would it be?
Personally I'm still sad we never got to see Dei-sandvich do Aradiasprite. Or do an interpretation of Grimdark Rose... That could have been pretty kickass.
If I had to pick one last cosplay from Yaexrae, I'd love to see her as Porrim, I think? I'm not sure if she's done it, but regular or dreamer porrim would be lovely to see her in. I feel as if we don't have enough good Porrim dresses. I know Most Flogged is usually on the shitlist, but she's still a really kickass seamstress, and I honestly love her fancy dreamer Roxy. Seeing her take on some of the more out there fantasystuck designs would have been really cool.
She did cosplay Porrim actually. I could only find this photo but I could swear she sold her default outfit too.
Yeah, that was what I guessed. Porrim is such a babe, and Yaexraes more mature (in comparsion to most homestucks) elegance would work AMAZING with that kind of gothy sensuality of hers.
Wasn't that a dress she made for CBC, though, or am I completely missing the mark?
Are there any photos of her wearing it? Seconding other anon, this would look great on her.
I think that the only thing I don't like about this, aside from the horns, is how some of the pinks don't quite match. Maybe the wig could look a bit better but considering that it's condy we're speaking about...
What else have they done?
IDK, it's not amazing, but at least it's not ridiculously way over the top with fancy make up, petal fins and non-canon, unneccessary detailing like so many others. It's also nice to see someone give Feferi a bit of a forehead, but that's just personal taste.
Also, for what it's worth, I do think she pulls off the "teenager fish alien" -look pretty well, even if a different pair of glasses would've looked much better.
Went looking at the other members of the group, and NGL I really like their GHB.
Went looking through their blogs for more fun stuff.
This is the Meulin and Redglare above.
Jesus fuck that guy is huge. I feel like its rare to see a GHB that's actually tall.
Yeah, I really love her face for Aranea.
Dirk and Jane. Which is new, I suppose.
Hhhammy is really cute as Jane, not so sure about Gothichamlet as Dirk, though. Or Pyropi as Rose? But that might be more with me not being overly fond of either of their wigs.
Also, JJ makes a pretty great John, so I've a hard time looking past that.
Terieri is Jane, Hhhhammy is Jade. Unremarkable wigs aside I still like the concept... I don't think I've seen a full "dead" group like this before.
Oops, my bad.
They're both cute though, IMO.
I think it could look better if they worked on their make up, but yeah.
As for wigs, Roxy, Jake and Jane look alright, the rest are either pretty underwhelming, or just don't look very good even though they're not technically bad or anything.
Any cute christmas stuff or is the fandom mostly past generating holiday themed stuff?
Check drag queen tutorials for that. But even then it's not always easy to cover.
And yeah, they're all alright, that doesn't mean the fit isn't awkward or the styling underwhelming, especially when CBC placed second in Iron Wig. Of course, they're not responsible for the other wigs, but with that in mind the Dirk wig is pretty disappointing.
With that said, it's still a neat group and photoshoot. The PJs look pretty sweet too.
I feel like most Dirk wigs are fluffy and messy, so I appreciate that there's at least one big spike in there. That's personal taste though.
All of the new holiday stuff in the tag is shitty Striders covered in Christmas lights. I think you'll have to pull from previous years to find anything cute. Pic related still makes me laugh.
And to finish it off, Guess the Cosplay(/AU)
i have a feeling we might be removing a lot of bnf's this time around for inactivity but going through the tag lately and im genuinely surprised how much if not amazing, at least passable-decent cosplay there is. it feels less cringy to me then it used to. have i just become numb to it?
I agree, kinda. Like, the bad stuff is still there, but there's a lot more of the stuff on the scale of decent-good, even though the GREAT cosplays are still relatively rare.
Also posting the list. I might go back over the year and pick some favourites.
it's always so funny for me seeing pearl on here because she's actually a good friend of mine. in her defense of low photoshoot output, last year was her final year of college so she was crazy busy with all her final projects and got a job almost right away so now she's crazy busy with that. she was supposed to come to a con with me over the summer, actually, but had to bag it due to the job.
i'm really happy she's doing so well in her personal/professional life though, she's an amazing seamstress not to mention the sweetest person like ever so she definitely deserves it
also, for a little news on her, i know some of our mutual friends are planning an alpha sprite group for katsu, along the vein of the beta sprite group she did jadesprite for, and i'm pretty sure she's in it though i'm not sure who she'd be. i just know for a fact one of my friends who was nannasprite in the beta sprite group is being arquius for it, and she's one of pearl's very best friends (i met pearl through her) so if i had to take a guess pearl's probably involved
i'm not trying to whiteknight or anything, just stating what the situation is in case anyone who doesn't know her was curious. i know you guys love her, as i said i see her on here all the time and never in a bad light.
I know it's time but it always makes me sad when we have to remove bnfs.
Hence why a Hall of Fame list is actually a good idea. It can be used to show off great HS cosplayers of the past too like Cifera.
What would determine who would go on there though? Like CBC will most likely still remain on the list because they still do HS cosplays but I'm guessing you'd have to find a point in say, a cosplayer's tag or page where they just stopped doing HS cosplays.
i wasnt talking about any specifically but there are decent cosplays in the tag like >>8763671
>>8763673 the construction on that god tier gamzee looks especially nice to me, so they might be someone to look at. not sure what their tumblr is. >>8752620 has some alright stuff imo. their tumblr is pasteleys.
sioxanne has some decent stuff too imo if you look past the fact their troll horns could use a bit of improvement.
i remember there was talk of adding imploder and kidbunni to the list. i havent seen much from imploder lately but it looks like he did some cosplay for dragon con.
Dumpan some neat stuff posted in these threads the past year, shout if you want to know their url.
Source? The Roxy looks kinda familiar.
Also, out of everything in Homestuck this is the one thing I still want to do, just for the hell of it, that is, to cosplay Jake with a Roxy in a wedding suit while pretending to eat an infant.
Reversed it and only found a linkback to the archives ):
Someone with a bit more google-fu try it.
Oops. Well, I try and stick to things a year old or less, but I don't keep track of everything lol.
2015 was the year of the non-english speaking fandoms getting into Homestuck.
(Don't got the link, but they also made the first HS CMV I haven't seen HSG bash, aside from pic related.)
I think it made well enough sense. If I remember correctly people were pretty much agreeing that even if the plot was so-so, the execution was pretty superb.
2015 was also the year of knit Eridan.
Why wouldn't you photoshop your hands if you're not gonna paint them...
People still painting themselves white for kids in this year of 2015?
This is actually one of the better examples I've seen of this, although if you're going for the "super canon" approach like this why would you use a light pink shirt instead of a white one...
The scarf is too pink, too.
She does make a really cute Roxy, though.
It's like the one AU the fandom actually agrees on, it seems.
All photos of him up until august were followed by a reply consisting of "buttchin".
If there were a Homestuck cosplay oscars, this would probably be cosplay of the year.
>set a new standard
>the year that we learned why some people are into fear
Yeah, I started at the start of the year and am a third in or so.
Yeah, it was really nice to see team Signless like that, what a good crew.
Such a shame there was nothing about the other ancestors.
Nothing at all.
A real shame.
It's pretty much the only good scene Vriska I've seen.
Bloodswaps are an underutilised AU resource.
Seriously, though. 2015 really picked up. If nothing else because we finally got a good Dualscar.
Squigglehaunt, but I haven't seen any better photos.
they have some in their cosplay tag. there cosplays seem pretty good.
Aight so I've a bunch more from the past year that I really like, but I'd rather not be the one to kick the thread's bucket. Sorry if anyone was like "why" but since we've talked a lot about cosplay quality/interest this year, I just felt like it was relevant. There's just been a lot of good cosplay this year, IMO, even among the people who aren't neccesarily BNFs. Like >>8770186 said.
didn't seem like there was a lot of repetition between the cosplayers featured across all those photos that were good and a single costume does not the list make, so I'm not sure if people should get added wholesale.
God damn I love these meenahs' wigs.
cerulean-neuf, she's cool but it's hard to find her cosplays.
Militarystuck was oddly big this year. possibly because its a lot easier that ballgown dreamers...
This is such a simple photo but I really like it. Makes rose actually feel like a kid.
Holy shit, that's a really impressive wig. I just wish they put more work in on their face makeup
Proposing now that the next thread be called Mspa generally ocsars. Also reminds me of all the Condys at Katsucon this year, it was absurd (and I was one of them of course...)
What's...around his waist?
Holy shit, good Aradia horns that weren't the costume store ones.
These were from this year? Dang.
Plain old dreamers are so rare to see that I get happy when I do. Are there any full bodies?
Colour me impressed, a good handmaid too. I felt like all I saw this year was lackluster, non canon outfit selfies but I've been proven wrong.
desu, I wasn't that impressed by this group for the most part. Jasperose was good but when you really looked at a few of them, they looked disappointing effortwise.
>Proposing now that the next thread be called Mspa generally ocsars
Seconded, and also proposing we waste some time coming up with actual oscars. It's stupid but this is the most active the thread's been in a while.
Crunchy Anon is now The Claw.
The Claw is our master.
The Claw chooses who will go and who will stay.
It's possible people just don't think she looks the part in regards to who she is cosplaying. She always gets white knighted on here, and its funny seeing people take salty-chans bait every time.
If we have HSG Oscars, can we have some Golden Stinky awards for our favorite trainwrecks?
>Best worst makeup
This is more applicable for the lifetime of the HS cosplay fandom though... 2015 was a pretty quiet year for drama.
>tfw i also volunteered to post a bnf run down but couldn't until i was out of work
>crunchy beat me to it
>this fame. this adoration. it could have been MINE
>best bad fake freckels/beard
Not all 2015 but I've got your nominees right here.
>Or should we just place all responsibility on Crunchy Anon?
Please don't. For one, I got a lot of other stuff to take care of, and for another... Well, I promised to stop once people suggested my name, and that's kind of eventually bound to happen, especially as the fandom gets smaller.
I'd rather not be known as someone who told people their cosplays sucked.
I'm sorry, haha. Honestly didn't expect it at all. Take on the role as the Academy Awards Anon and pick together some nominations, maybe? q:
if it makes you feel better if no one here said my cosplay was bad i would never have improved and i would probably still be terrible. seeing ppl trash my cosplay kinda suxed but it really helped me out in the long run.
Shit tier was never about quality, it was about personality. But quality also played into it. I didn't go through the shit tier because I had enough work as was and the qualifiers for shit tier were different.
If people want to re-add shit tier that's fine with me; I'm no "supreme leader" or whatever, I just collect the statistics and give as objective an opinion as I can on who's interesting to follow.
Sure, and I shit talk people here too, but seeing as I've become a known name in these threads (and seeing how people has started to take my opinions as some final ruling) I'd still rather not have that be part of my persona under this name.
Anyway, compiling the information is a lot of work, and I'd rather not take on any more than what I already have, as I'll also try and dig out some interesting new names.
I always thought "the list" was kind of meant as a fun thing that didn't actually hold any weight as far as who's good or not, considering it's decided on by like 10 people.
If people are actually taking it as God's word on who's better at cosplay, then that's their problem.
If you're looking to get away from the job, it sounds like >>8771621 might be eager to become the new head of listmaking.
I hear you though, it's a thankless task. I've updated the visual list for maybe two years and the only feedback I ever got was about how unfair or biased an update was (probably from someone mad about a friend's placement) But I still like the list discussions, I feel it revitalizes the thread.
The list was made back when we were going through a thread a day. Anons were constantly asking which cosplayers were worth following, so the list became an easy file to drop in response.
That's why I think we'd really benefit from a list update. So many people have left and joined the fandom in the past couple years, I'm not sure who I should be watching for cosplay anymore.
Nah, I like doing it. I just don't like being seen as some divine ruler of quality in the fandom. I don't know all the cosplayers, I don't keep track of all the cosplays. It's not even I who decide how the list looks - I just make suggestions.
