Finally assembling my Yukio bag. I had to add and subtract some jump rings from the keychains to space it out nicely but I like it it. The fabric patch is kinda weird though I should have photoshopped the background cyan before printing it out. That being said the print and fuse fabric came out super clean.

Might be easier to work with doujin scans so you won't need to mess with colours if you don't know how to do that. I looked at ArtCow and each leg needs to be 3000 x 6000 though so you're going to be needing high quality things at large sizes or you'll be working on the graphic forever.

There's not usually product pictures for things as they're not made yet. Even lots of the images for the figures aren't the finalised product.
You can just google the terms on Google Images to get some kind of grasp on what certain products are. If it's an older product then searching in Japanese or checking MFC might give you some buyer photos.

I was so proud of those charms and straps until we went to a store on vacation and when I pulled my phone out to check a text, the entire thing of merch was gone. For Y!J, you'll need a shopping service. They're really easy though! The big ones are Buyee, FromJapan, and my person favourite (that I've been using for 10 years) is ShoppingMallJapan. There's pros and cons of each, just depending on what you want to do. I personally think SMJ is the easiest to use/set up/bid with, but their base fees are $6 so things can get pricey pretty fast.

FromJapan has the cheapest fees, but I'm not as fond of their deposit system and you have to pay within 24hrs.

Buyee also has low fees, but has fees to consolidate items which is why I've never used them personally.

My maki bag came in. I drew and sent the order in last week. I was looking at my design again and i kinda regret not giving him his pointy chin. I dont like them in my art. Different anon but someone posted a Japanese tutorial where they cleaned the paint off their bag using either nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol. I can't remember which. Just one of those and some cotton balls.

If you do it with nail polish remover you gotta go and get the serious business professional remover from Sally's or whatever your beauty supplier is. Most drug store brands with the candy colors have too much mineral oil to acetone ratio and it will take even longer. I haven't done it for these bags but I have used it for removing factory paint from monster high dolls and other figures.

I took one pad and could have easily cleaned my entire bag with it. It's insane how easily you can clean your bags with nail polish remover pads.

My first and thankfully only mistake with this was assuming the paint was on the outside. I don't know about other bags but the polka dot 2-in-1 bags, the paint is on the inside.

Other than that, the process is super easy. It only take two to three easy swipes over the paint and then it's completely gone. After that I used a dry tissue to mop up the mixture of paint and leftover remover and even that's enough to take off a couple more dots on its own.

I'm probably going to finish removing the paint and then clean the bag with a wet paper towel just to get rid of any residue and the polish remover scent before I put my merch back in there.

Feel free to repost this anywhere you want since there's a FB group now and I know none of us even knew it was possible until someone posted that Japanese tutorial and even then we had to guess what they were using.

So on the fandom fashion side, are there any equivalents to Secret Honey for Western companies? Her Universe doesn't quite cut it for me--their stuff tends to be weird looking flat skater dresses, although their two recent Star Wars dresses (the Leia & Vader ones) were miles above those.

There's also a bunch more like Idolish7, AiChuu, Yumerio and Ensembles Stars which are all mobage like SideM. It's just a pain to get into the fandoms if you don't know Japanese since there's only a few fan translations of events which contain most of the plot and character interactions.

The only male idol series that I can think of where there's actually a good chunk of translated material is Utapri. Though that was mostly due to the anime being popular. [spoiler]Who's hyped for the EnStars anime even though it'll probably focus on the worst groups.[/spoiler]

The page may be in Japanese so you'll need to click on Global at the top and make your way back to the page. It is a second hand product so if you don't like that then be wary of ordering from Mandarake. There's never usually any issues.
I was finding links for you for other Shinkai products you could order at the same time but there's so many so you should just look through them yourself. Search for "新開" or "Shinkai" and click on "Sapporo" to see every product for him at that store. The website sometimes translates things automatically so searching in English and Japanese may bring different results. The bag is from Sapporo but you can also look through different shops for more Shinkai merch but that's even more shipping since it's a completely different location.

Try to match the colours/quality of each different screenshot and art so it's not all over the place. Depending on who makes it there could also be some contrast differences from when it's finally printed so you might need to make it brighter or duller than it already is.
You will probably be able to find reviews or at least people posting in a tag on Tumblr with what they have made. I think people here use Artcow but I'm not sure how good they are with colours. Hopefully someone now or in the next thread can tell you about their experience.

Most people who collect things are not going to buy a bootleg willingly. You saying that is just like suggesting to get a knockoff dress. With itabags people tend to get multiples so they go to Taobao to cheap out and get a lot of a certain product but that will feel wrong for a lot of people.

Different anon but just throwing my two cents in.

Yes, I like buying legitimate merchandise but for my T&B bag I was lucky that the fandom is old enough to where I could get Taobao questionable 'minor defect' factory reject chain figures for about $0.16 each but I could also get identical authentic gaschapon merch off Yahoo Auctions for about $0.25-0.50 a piece in the few available styles they had. If you looked at my bag you probably wouldn't even be able to tell which is Taobao and which is straight from Japan.

There's another set of characters I like from a much more recent (and more popular) series that their tiny buttons alone go for about $5 each second hand and there's no way right now I could afford the funds to dedicate that much money because in merch fees and From Japan fees it would cost probably close to $100 just to fill half a bag and that's way too ridiculous for a convention-only bag. If they had readily available factory reject merch on Taobao, I'd definitely buy there and use the bulk of that to decorate my bag and with the money saved, put towards larger merch from Japan like a plushie or something to that effect since it's actually cheaper to spend $30 on one big item that it would have been to get the small decorative items.

I know some people aren't going to be okay with the very idea of buying merch from Taobao, even if it ends up being legitimate merchandise that just didn't meet quality standards enough to be sold in Japan but then again, some people are also not going to be okay with the idea of using non-official merch like fan-made stuff on your bag because you spent money on something someone else created instead of putting that money towards supporting the creators of the character/show.

So it's entirely subjective and gets debated to death every few threads regardless of the reasons behind it and honestly I forgot where I was going with this wall of text.
