Last thread was saging.
It's been a while since we've had some selfposts- Show makeup tests, hall shots, WIPs, or just say what you're working on to help get the thread started. (pic not related, just grabbed from last thread)
I was just cleaning out photos on my phone and realized bought the fabric to make Pearl over a year ago. I have the bottom half of the costume done, but I've lost a lot of motivation with how the fandom has been going.
People who loose interest in something because of a fandom are weak.
You realize that everything you like is also liked by crappy people? Are just gonna stop liking everything then? Treat yourself better than that anon
I understand how you feel anon- I don't want people to look at me cosplaying SU at a con and think I'm some crazy tumblr person. But I still want to cosplay SU, so I'm going to! There are shitty people in the fandom, but I don't want some horrible fans to impact my love of cosplaying and SU
What's the best way to go about Rose's star cutout? I don't want to just paste a skin toned star on my dress, but I've seen some cutouts that have drooped and completely lost their shape. Would reverse applique be the best approach, or is there a way to do an actual cutout that doesn't involve fabric and still holds its shape? Sorry if this is a pretty stupid question, I've never had to do something like this before in my sewing.
...no one on here has called red paint on garnets black face. everyone always says that red/purple paint looks good. the only controversy was when a white cosplayer legitimately painted herself the color of a black person with no red in her paint.
what version of garnet are you doing? in her first form, you could do red, contour with dark red, and highlight with a lighter red and just do red blush. dont mix in brown if you think it might offend someone, unless you're that desperate for attention
Im doing post jail break.
Cause i dont have dark red or light red. Just generic fire engine red. And I'm trying to make it look Not like fire engine red.
I just have white, contour brown, two shades of blush and two shades of pale skin tone.
And random eye shadow but im not counting those tiny pots.
Yes reverse appliqué would be the best way. One way of getting very crisp cutouts is to stitch a thin but stiff fabric like organza in the shape of the cutout, cut the shape out leaving 1/4" seam allowance, turn under and press, and then edge stitch (if you aren't sure what a edge stick is look it up it will keep it from rolling), and then reverse appliqué the flesh color fabric.
post jailbreak, her skin is purple. there are so many places online to buy paint in many different colors, or you could mix your own. TAG's berry wine is a great color for garnet's post-jailbreak skin tone. you could use purple paint, contour with dark purple, and highlight with a lighter purple or pink. and there's nothing wrong with contouring with eyeshadows as long as they're matte. im cheap and i tend to buy those to contour with- they work great if you know how to use them
are you clinically retared?
that's red. just take some medium red, and mix in a little light brown. you;re gonna need brown to make it look better but a light brown and very little.
getting pretty aggressive about paint, aren't you? i would suggest getting your eyes checked if you cant see that her regenerated form is way more purple/pink tinged than brown and red. brown paint would look like shit with her new color palette
How is that anon weak? I've lost interest in things before from over exposure to shitty fans. It's a pretty normal reaction to start to resent something you once loved because it begins to take on the negative aspects of the fandom in your head no matter what you try.
She makes the costume, wears it to a con, those are the sorts of people who she will meet in that outfit. You can say all you want about the rest of the fandom being decent but the loud idiots always shout over the chill parts, and that is who you are going to notice first.
It's unrealistic to tell people to not lose interest in something when the fandom's less than savory exploits are plastered all over the internent.
While its tru their skin isnt strictly purple. Its not red either. I think its more maroon if anything.
But im also very poor and cant really afford the fancy paints. Though i might be able to buy a dark blue and mix the two? (The paints are mehron grease paint)
im not suggesting straight grape purple. if you actually read my post through (which im guessing you didnt), i suggested TAG in berry wine, like in my picture. It's a warm deep purple with reddish undertones.
the good thing about TAG is that it's pretty cheap- you can get a container of it for 10 dollars on amazon and it lasts through 10 or more applications. though if youre desperate, i think mixing blue and red could be a nicer color than fire truck red
What? I don't like the show any less. I'm just not as excited to wear the costume because I took so long that Pearl has already been done half to death and I don't look forward to dealing with a lot of the fans in costume.
I'm still going to do it because my bf still wants to cosplay Amethyst.
To be honest I haven't seen many good SU tutorials at all. There's been a handful of okay makeup ones but so many of the gem and wig tuts are terrible things like "make Sardonyx's wig out of fleece." Pic very related.
Why exactly? What I'm suggesting is a technique to not show a raw edge you still would appliqué a flesh colored fabric underneath. Not to mention you would need to stabilize a cutout at the waist anyways especially with the amount of tension there is.
Well, getting away from all this paint talk, here's a pic of my cyclops Sapphire? It was my first time making anything close to a prosthetic so it was super rough around the edges, but I'm still p happy with how it turned out!
ooh i think i've seen your cosplay before! the eye is a really cool idea, and i love how poofy your sleeves are. here's a WIP of my rose quartz! i still have a few things to do before she's finished, but im pretty happy so far, especially with the sword!
No experience with their yellow, sadly, but I have about 10 colors by them and they all work wonderfully, so their yellow probably is good too.
I suggest checking it out for future cosplays of Garnet if you can't get it now. If Amazon won't ship it to Australia, you can try eBay- there are a lot of Australian sellers there
Actually, I really, really love TAG and I have other colors by them too, but yellow is not something I would recommend from them. It's quite hard to blend and is easy to make splotchy. Maybe it's just me, but their other colors are just so much easier to work with. I would recommend something like Kryolan for a yellow, since I've seen some pretty good results from them, although its twice the price of TAG.
They are actually based in Australia, so I'm pretty sure they do!
So the other two who suggested wire and stiff interface are somehow is better to make it lay flat? Look up how welt pockets are done. The technique is done to enforce the cutout and not show a raw edge which reverse appliqué usually has. My degree is in apparel development so I'm not talking out of my ass I'm speaking from the years of experience I have and thanks to recent trends my experience with cutouts and appliqué techniques.
"I'm a seamstress working on an SU inspired collection, here's the first piece."
if i can be honest, your wig isn't going to work. it looks way too bubblegum pink, you need something lighter for rose, and i would make a better attempt at taming the curls.
but the dress looks fantastic so far!
haha yeah i didnt have great lighting when i took this! here's a comparison that I hope better shows the color in white lighting. I am planning on working on the wig some before actually wearing her to a con (adding wefts to make it fuller, working on smoothing out the curls, teasing it, etc). and thank you!
ah, the wig does look a much better color in this pic.
well then, my only critique remains at taming the curls, and styling the bangs. otherwise you're good to go!
oh and if you don't already know, please use some sort of wire or interfacing when you do your gem cutout! a rose cosplay can be ruined by a shitty cutout.
thank you! and definitely haha, the last picture was a few days ago before I worked on the bangs and stuff, they should look way better by the time i wear her for real! and i was the one who asked >>8711534 because i want a very clean, no droop cutout, but it seems there's some debate on which would be the best way, so im still deciding on how to do it!
thank you! unfortunately, i impulse-bought it at a con a month or two ago and i dont remember what the name of the company was, sorry!! i really wish i kept a business card or something from them, because the wig is super nice for rose and i'd love to buy another
yeah, it definitely wasn't glw, i tried ordering a wig from them in the past but the style just wasn't right for rose in my opinion! i bought one of their countess wigs in the right color and straightened and styled it, but i just wasnt happy with it so i sold it.
That is how you do it.
Wire will look like crap.
Depending on what your dress is made of will tell you which interfacing to use.
Facing will keep the edges nice & neat looking.
Please stop suggesting wire for Rose's star cutout.
In order for it to be strong enough to hold the shape it will have to be around coat-hanger thickness which will looks lumpy and bad in all likelihood.
Personally, I think interfacing+reverse applique is the best choice, with a sheer, nude material inside to keep the gut from bulging out.
Whatever process used should be figured out before the dress bodice is constructed too since any quality Rose dress is doing to need boning built in which had a good chance of interfering with the star placement/bodice stability.
tl;dr use trial and error before constructing the whole dress instead of waiting til the garment is complete to figure out the star.
I was super split on whether or not to add eyelashes but i left them off mainly because I ran out of time to go purchase some but also because I kinda liked the uncanny of it without and we don't actually know if she does have eyelashes or not.
I am definitely going to get some before I wear it again though!
isnt there one for this one?
im guessing this is a test run, but it just lacks all the presence that the temple has (huge hair is a big part of its look, and the plain dress just looks so.. boring? the arms are weirdly splotchy too, with the human skin tone showing underneath. it's a cool concept and could probably be improved, but it just needs to be executed better
and now you're realizing that the stature actually has 8 arms
here's the proof and also a picure comparision
since we're pretty much already talking about the temple gem, i plan on (eventually) cosplaying this artist's version of the temple fusion, but the rock one is also a cool idea!
Did she purposefully make it so droopy on the sides? Honestly, why would you make it with fleece.. You could alter a peridot wig tutorial to just have rounder edges and it would be way better than a stuffed fleece hat thing
i think this pearl was trying to go for pearl's pupil-less look, but it honestly looks terrifying
there are two setsof arms folded in that are holding the house, and two sets that are pointing out.
the sets holding the house are kinda hard to see.
here's another angle.
not exactly cosplay, but i found this way too cute. (could also be a prop for rose or steven, i guess)
shit like this makes me wonder
i shall contribute some from the tag as well
oh my god, i love this. she looks adorable and that's a really nice interpretation on the onion hair. i'm glad to see someone cosplay vidalia in general; it's good to see minor characters getting a little bit of attention, not to mention she's the only character i'd really be able to pull off as well.
>"This patch is painted on canvas and sealed with mod podge."
a little pet peeve of mine is when people try to say peridot's hair is green. i just got told by some random to dye my peridot wig green, even though her hair is yellow/blonde. also: just got a complete image for my captcha
This is so fucking pretty.. I think this is my favorite one. The wig looks good, not crazy pointy to the point of looking like Pearl's. The cosplay is sewed well and the makeup is really nice. AND HOLY SHIT THAT MIRROR.
You have heard of the theories that Cenitpeedle is actually a gem that was corrupted and became a monster? This is just the cosplayers idea of what a non-corrupted Centipeedle looks like as a regular gem.
>did the shittiest interpretation possible
I have seen sketches of personifications of 'peedle. This was one of the worst ones I saw. For a creature so unsure of what it is doing, running around and eating shit left and right, to have this Envy looking Cruella De Ville looking piece of shit is just mind boggling.
And its bad. It looks really bad. The execution is horrible. One of the worse looking cosplays in this thread. Don't bother defending it.
it may not be your favorite design, but it doesn't make it bad. it's not my favorite cosplay either, but she has good face paint, good wig, and the outfit is well executed, even if you dont think it is. jesus, some people on here need to learn the difference between 'bad in my opinion' and objectively bad
>loose threads everywhere
>greens don't match
>hot glue seen on hand-held whatever that is
>wig is tangled as fuck
>star is shitty
>blacks don't match
>makeup is super bad
Anon, this is bad. This must be you. I think I remember someone else asking which version they should cosplay in another SU thread. Sorry, but your outfit needs a lot of work.
I'm with the other anon, it's not great especially since she's making a dumb hall photo face but "one of the worst in the thread"? Yeah no, sounds like you're letting your assrash over how much you hate the design get in the way. Putting her in a skirt and boa is really weird but the execution is mediocre at worst compared to your average SU cosplay.
Sorry about your vendetta, anon. It's either that or you get super assblasted over someone not agreeing with you or (the most likely conclusion) you're just some shitty troll who gets their kicks off arguing over meaningless subjects. It's a mediocre cosplay- some people like it, some people don't. Get over it.
um im.. the anon who asked for design help planning a centipeetle cosplay a while ago, and I haven't even started on my cosplay, but someone posted this centipeetle in the thread to give me inspiration since there's so little centipeetle cosplays. I'm going in a different direction since I'm not a fan of the boa and relaxed wig, but honestly.. worst cosplay in the thread? it's not my favorite by far but have you seen some of the tinydots in this thread?
dropped pic, but this is more what i'm going for with centipeetle
i think the boa was meant to be the fur that centipeetle has around her neck- but yeah, it's a little weird to say that her personality is 'scared and aggressive'. she acted like a cornered animal with the gems, but was very sweet and playful around steven. seeing as some gems already wear skirts, its not out of the question that she might have worn a skirt in her uncorrupted form
i'm gonna go ahead and say that if you're not thni, don't do that design. specifically because of the legs.
this is coming from a fat bitch so don't think i'm saying it to say "fatties can't cosplay!" but if you're even a little bit overweight your leg fat is gonna bulge out between the tight shorts and the tight leggings. its already gonna be a hard cosplay to pull off and people are already gonna make fun of it because it's not canon.
also the gloves covering one finger on each hand... isn't tht exactly what garnet has?
ill admit im not super thin (US size 8) but im going to be wearing tights for her skin and shapewear underneath to prevent any unfortunate bulges. and eh, i've got a thick skin and im used to criticism, and i can brush off super aggressive anons like the one going apeshit over the other centipeetle. i think its a cute design and even if its nothing close to canon, it'll still be fun to do.
enh, desu i'm not so sure about wearing tights to sub in for colored skin in this case. the fabe will end up bunching unless you're able to se it together in a way that's invisible.
okay i'm rarely on cgl and i post even more rarely, and i'm als crazy high.
please tell me what i typed that filtered to desu because i'm fucking losing it lmao. i had no idea this was a thing.
tights and armsocks have been used and recommended for almost every character with brightly colored skin to avoid painting arms and legs though.. as long as the color matches, they're waaay better than painting. and what tights have you been using that bunch?
well yeah, but it all depends on the clothing you're wearing over it.
i mean like if you're getting tights that are thick enough to really have the color pop out and look natural, they're gonna end up getting rubbed and moved around as you move around, and it'll bunch up a bit where the stockings lay over the tights.
i'm also just not a fan of armsocks or ights being used as a sub in for skin color. almost no one gets it to look good. i've seen tons of pictures of people using tights and armsocks, and i've only seen maybe 3 that didn't look exactly like you were wearing a bodysleeve.
not trying to be rude, but i have no idea how tights would be rubbed to the point of moving around and bunching. i always wear dance tights for cosplays that show leg, and sometimes layer thigh highs on top of them, and ive never had any problems with it. ive also used armsocks multiple times before and as long as i color match correctly and put false nails on the end, they never are really obvious, and they're way better than going through the pain of painting your arms and potentially getting the paint on something
Different anon here who has worn her fair share of dance tights and colored tights for both SU cosplays and homestuck. What you're describing just simply doesn't happen up on the thigh. Maybe it does if your tights are too big or cheap and stretched out, or I could see this maybe being a problem in the wrist/ankle area where the tights are loser, but thighs? Seriously, no, everything is stretched too tight to bunch up.
also, could i get a few opinions on how to approach the fur around her neck? im using a wig for her hair, but should i also get wig fibres to use for the fur around her neck, or fake fur? it all looks like its made of the same material, but im not sure if it would be weird if it was made of wig fiber
According to the cosplayer they're PETG thermoplastic. She posted a tutorial on how to make them too. http://cowbuttcrunchies.tumblr.com/post/125556788422/weve-gotten-a-ton-of-questions-about-how-we-made
One of the best Pearls I've seen
Yea, I think sewing is more her forte. But this was at NYCC so I can't say for sure if the spear is just poorly made. Or made to be allowed in the con as their prop ruling is such shit.
she said she's selling the rose dress in a facebook group post and i just realized.. isn't this PP's dress (and maybe wig?)
I feel the same way, anon. I've been working on my rose wig and it's a hard compromise between getting good ringlets and making it not look super stiff and unnatural
That's a nice progress!
Also, I think that dress might look even better with a petticoat like that:
this has over 1k likes and im so confused
hey guys- im trying to match pearl's skin perfectly to the weird yellow/eggshell color it is in the show instead of going stark white or just human colored. so far, i think these tights are a good match, but is there any face paint that comes close?
a picture of her for reference
can i request specifically kids doing SU cosplays, cosplays with 4+ arms, and more rose wigs?
i really don't think i've been able to find a good example of a rose wig, or a good example of fake arms.
these are the best extra arms ive seen. you'll have to be specific with how you think a good rose wig would look- some people like natural curls and think really structured drill curls dont look right or vice versa. i have a few good examples of each kind, but it really depends on what you think would be good
those arms do look pretty good, i really wish someone would come up with a good way to make the elbow joint look real.
i was thinking earlier about, what if someone made like casts of their own arms, and then situated the fake hands on their hip or something.
and i'd love to see everythign you have with rose wigs, i really have no idea which one would look better until i see them.
also what is everyone's opinions on the star cutouts for rose? do you think it should be an actual cutout, or a flesh colored fabric?
It'd be best if you did a cutout, even if you put flesh fabric underneath (you'd have to do that if you're wearing a corset). Fabric that is pasted on top of the dress doesn't look as good.
Actually I disagree - most people just paint their mannequin arms directly, and it looks really off-putting and different/shiny compared to the texture of their real arms. It'd be nice if someone used stuffed arms but mannequin hands.
Each to his own I guess
the juxtaposition between the weird suede armsocks really makes the shininess look odd, but a matte finish on the arms would fix that. and still, they look better than this
>Protip: "Each to his own" is your invitation to gracefully drop the argument because nobody is going to agree on a personal opinion and it's just pointlessly shitting up the thread otherwise.
jesus youre salty. how about you just say 'lets agree to disagree', because thats what people actually say when they want to drop a topic. or even better 'let's just drop the topic'. when you attach a bad example of mannequin arms along with a passive aggressive comment, it doesnt really seem like youre done talking.
im not raging at all- i have different taste in arms than them and apparently didnt understand their vague comment meant that they wanted to drop the conversation. it's really easy to stop talking about this- just.. dont respond
>> >8734129 How shitty of you to not explicitly state that you're done with the thread
>> >8734159 How shitty of you to say that you're done with the thread
Are you just trolling now? Because holy shit, calm down or at least just decide what you want.
nice greentext. also: "im so done! this is frustrating!" ad infinitum. and yet.. keeps responding. why dont you just contribute some content to the thread instead of repeating how 'not mad! not mad!' you are? im only responding when you do
then stop responding and actually contribute to the thread, maybe. ive already done two dumps here. if its so annoying, why do you all keep responding? ive gladly stopped posting when you guys stop arguing too
t.b.h she's probably banking on that. This is clearly a nice photo that they posed and staged, and yet they didn't think do the obvious thing and have her pose on a bench, a wall, sitting on the grass, ANYWHERE except in an out of place wheelchair? I call bullshit.
I HATE the material you chose for the dress and it needs more poof, BUT.
I love that you actually did the shapes of the coloured layers, not enough people do that, and this makes your dress 90% more accurate than majority of the Roses I've seen. Good job!
desu it seems like everyone just gets up in arms if someone has a disability and they don't try to hide it.
like yeah her pearl isn't the best but people are calling a person they don't know an attention whore literally only because she's sitting in her wheelchair in a cosplay.
it's not the best cosplay but jfc, how petty do you have to be to get butthurt because someone is cosplaying in a wheelchair?
Sure, but howcome I almost never see the right length in Pearl's socks? It should be the easiest part in the costume. Even if the socks are too long, you can always shorten them so forgive my salt as I find no excuse for this.
Not trying to argue, just salty.
Except her photoset post specifically Talks about her disability. She's purposefully drawing peoples's attention to it, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to guess why considering how much tumblr eats that up.
yeah i'm with you, socks are incredibly easy to find, and it's also incredibly easy to just buy socks that are longer than what you need and trim them.
there's really no excuse for something so incredibly basic.
woah, you mean someone discussed something about their lives that kind of pertains to literally every tiny detail about their lives? i'm assuming you don't know anyone in a wheelchair but being in a wheelchair changes your life completely. there is nothing you can do without having to consider your wheelchair. at all. your wheelchair is as much a part of you as your leg or your eyes.
someone talking about a thing they have to take into account literally every second of their life is not someone fishing for attention. it is someone talking about their life.
you are so fucking whiny about somethign so basic and simple. a person is in a wheelchair, they talk about their wheelchair, and you have a massive problem with that.
even if she never talked about it, just posted the pictures of it, you'd find reason to complain.
it's time to just admit you need somethign to bitch about.
getting out of the wheelchair would mean giving up her ability to move under her own steam for at least a couple minutes. maybe even getting someone to prop her up if shes really disabled. either way it would require being dependent on an extra person. you cant blame someone for being adverse to the bother, esp since this isn't a maximumhigh effort cosplay.
>tried to google image reverse search >>8736532
>got pictures of lawnmowers
...so? its not like tumblr popularity can be cashed in for money or bacon sandwiches.
... you know you can move your legs with your hands right? disabled people can just cross their legs by hand.
anyway, seriously we're arguing about some random stranger in a wheelchair. that's petty and truly pathetic even for people on /cgl/. get real. boo fucking hoo, she's cosplaying in her wheelchair. boo fucking hoo. she talked about her wheelchair on her personal blog. boo. fucking. hoo. sitting here crying about it because someone wasn't comfortable being picked up and propped up just for a photoshoot doesn't mean they're an evil attention grubbing monster. get over yourselves. this has got to be the most childish thing i've ever seen anyone complain about on /cgl/ and i've seen a 200 post thread about nothing but dollar store ribbon.
Holy shit calm down. People were complaining that tumblr babies were going to fawn over a lackluster costume, which is a pretty standard line of bitching here... why are you getting your panties in such a twist? Is it because you need to whiteknight the helpless disabled girl? ):
i'm sorry, we are apprently reading different threads. people are bitching because she didn't get out of her wheelchair for the shoot, and because she talked about her wheelchair in the post she did with the pictures. which is a really petty thing to bitch about.
>someone wasn't comfortable being picked up and propped up just for a photoshoot
Way to reduce disabled people to delicate flowers. Do you think she just sleeps and lives in her wheelchair 24/7? Plenty of wheelchair-bound cosplayers manage to take great photos because - wait for it - they pose appropriately or at the very least decorate their chairs. I don't see where anyone is calling her an "evil monster" (wtf?) but she doesn't get a free pass on nitpicking.
>tfw i'm literally disabled and know a lot of disabled people
people were suggesting she sit on a wall, or against a wall, or just in the grass. how exactly do they expect her to be able to get on a wall or on the ground without help? why do they expect her to sit on a dirty wall or on the dirty ground in her cosplay? why exactly are people so damn butthurt that she posed in her chair and talked about her chair?
again. boo fucking hoo. she posed in her chair. she talked about her chair.
/cgl/ is the most petty childish board on this website.
she did do some photos outside her chair- and in most of them, it's even cropped out. also, not trying to be argumentative, but the ground and grass doesnt look so dirty if youre shooting in a fairly clean location- even non-disabled cosplayers tend to use their environment to pose against
Someone sounds mad. How's that projecting going for you?
>"Walls are SO DIRTY! Disabled cosplayers can't possibly be expected to touch them!"
>Ignores how most cosplayers sit on walls all the time for photos
