I got dragged to a Fetlife meetup and it turned into a BDSM 101.

I think you're a little confused.

It might be different for an LLP in Ohio than an LLC in other states, but in general you have to file your company in the state the owner has residency in, if there is no office. So if the owner lived in ohio, the company is formed in ohio.
pass-through entities aren't used for businesses simply because the owners get paid. It's more about dealing with state corporation taxes.

Of which virtually no first year con ever qualifies because most states have a required revenue stream much, much higher than a first year gets (in Ohio, it's 150,000)

But even on top of that, operating a company as a pass through has it's income reported on your personal taxes, not separate business taxes.
They DO need to register their business in Illinois, because Illinois has special "out of state LLC registration" filing (500 dollar fee) but A) do we know they didn't file that? and B) it doesn't mean they are subject to taxes outside of sales tax, because like in Ohio, they'll be filing on their own personal income taxes, aside from the 1.5% they'll pay for the ppr tax

IF they even TAKE a profit. If they don't make money, i.e. if they're in the red, then none of that matters.

Also "co-owners" don't mean anything if they aren't listed as the legal owners.

That's not necessarily true. One of the oldest tricks in the book is filing your LLC in this one state where it's free to do so, I forget which one but I think it's Michigan. My BF has an LLC and I have also looked into creating one. It's just more convenient for certain reasons if it's in your home state.
