Newcosplayfag here. I think I've finally found the perfect character to cosplay.
I think the hardest part will be the helmet, but I'm a beginner so I don't know. I'll be spending all my free time on it when I can but I'm not sure how or what I need to do.

Where do I begin?

Ill add more pics for reference, the character is Duke aka 'Lark'. He's a 'new' character from DCs Rebirth line-up. A way better version of all Robins.

Emmeryn from Fire Emblem

I think it would be really cool if there was one term for coords that are lolita-inspired and non-lolita coords that use lolita main-pieces. Or a style with the same aesthetic, feelings and influences of lolitas but no rules. What do you think of these terms and which one would you use?

>Soft lolita
From Misako's book that came out in spring 2014.

>Neo lolita
A term I first heard from RinRin Doll but apparently Kera has been using it a lot.

>Otome kei
Supposedly used to be be a seperate style before lolita, now it seems to be used for any ETC and JM coord in the West.

>Quasi lolita
A couple of girls in my comm use this for their casual lolita/fuck the rules coords but I never see it anywhere else.

>Daily Alamode
Used to be the place to post non-lolita burando coords.

>Casual lolita
Speaks for itself.

From an interview with Misako about her book:
>I often think it is difficult to wear Lolita fashion because my other job is nursing. So I can’t wear Lolita clothes when I work as a nurse, and I also don't have enough time to complete my ideal Lolita fashion collection. Although, I know that there are a number of girls who want to enjoy Lolita fashion 365 days a year, so I suggested the girlie and romantic “Soft Lolita”, which is a more casual Lolita fashion option. A good example of this is can be seen in “LARME”, the fashion magazine which is very popular among young girls who love kawaii. “LARME” shows many “Soft Lolita” styles. I want such girls to be interested in true Lolita fashion as well and to gradually come to wear Lolita clothes.
>>9519443
>>
Soft lolita seems to be based on the idea of wanting to be cute and girly at school or work, but even Misako doesn’t use this term? Most recently in this video she calls that style casual lolita (in the last part):

How do you feel about it in general?
How do you feel about "sexy" cosplayers who sell images of minimal quality "cosplays"?

If there's an audience willing to pay for it that's all that matters. For example those asian cosplayers that come to America have a bunch of prints and books people are willing to fork over money for. Even better if they get an autograph and a selfie too. They'd be leaving money on the table for not having merch available to buy.

When do you think it is time for a cosplayer to hang up their costumes, if at all? More specifically, young cosplayers in their twenties for example, who might have a fan following on Facebook/DeviantArt etc. At what point do they just become too old for it?

Do you plan to stop cosplaying when you reach a certain age?

>What do you use to carry your necessities, whether it's a con or a tea party?
I don't go to cons or tea parties but I have a variety of purses of different sizes, many of them are black to match the majority of my wardrobe and most of them are brand. I use brand tote bags to carry my lunch in when I go to work, too.
>what do you keep in them? Any recommendations?
Mostly just basic necessities like my phone, keys, purse, lip gloss, hand cream, and a small book to read whether I actually have time to read or not. I like carrying a small notebook and a pen too, if I see something interesting to draw or write about or just doodle aimlessly.
>any purses you're lusting after?
I recently scored pic related after wanting it for years, I'm not sure why I wanted it so much because it doesn't really match anything I own so for now I just use it to store some of my lolita-related books that don't fit on my shelves, but it's so cute that I don't regret buying it at all.
>>
I have purchased two brand purses and I don't think I'll ever buy any again. One is IW, the other is AatP. The IW one is sturdy enough but I'm afraid I'm going to destroy the faux leather exterior. The AatP broke, the stitching on one of the straps came right out of the seam. For the price they cost I don't think they're worth it. I'd much rather spend that money on a nice leather normie designer purse instead, at least I know they'll last.

My mid-size con has attracted a decent number of good Lolita cosplayers and they have a nice community going. We want to throw them a tea party but we really don't know what's expected at an event like that. Are actual tea and cookies a given? Arts and crafts? Guided discussion? Anything can help. Thanks!

Protip intended without a bit of salt: call them lolitas, not "lolita cosplayers". Most lolitas, even at an anime convention, consider lolita a fashion style and not a cosplay, so getting it wrong makes you look clueless at best.
>>
No
>lolita cosplayers
>arts and crafts (actually maybe, depends)

>actual tea (black, green, dessert, noncaf)

Tables should be fully set with tablecloths. You don't need to use real dishware but get the nice plastic or paper stuff, not the shitty ones.

Don't just go to costco and pick up whatever snacks seem fancy. Research tea houses in the area and find out if they do catering.

Raffles are standard. Prizes are usually gift cards from major brands (Angelic Pretty, don't bother with Baby The Stars Shine Bright they're weird about gift cards) and small/mid-sized accessories from indie brands (Mossbadger, Lotv).

Try to decorate just a bit. There should be simple centerpieces and some wall hangings with a bit of classical or jazz music playing quietly in the background. A little ambiance goes a long way. If you have people serving the attendees with the food, they should be dressed alright and uniformly like a white button down and black pants.

Definitely choose a theme. That will help with choosing decorations and give lolitas a prompt to form coords around. Popular themes include: flowers, animals, sweets, fairy tales, etc.

Tickets for tea parties without special guests like designers from major brands tend to be around $20-35 USD.

Everyone should receive a small goodie bag, even if it's just some Japanese candy, postcards, and tea wrapped in plastic bags from Daiso.

Lolitas can be left to their own accord and entertain themselves for the most part (80% of all chatter at tea parties is gossip). Raffles are held at the end. Coord contests are a simple way to push guests to dress their best, make sure to provide a prize for the winner, and a way for people to vote.

tl;dr put more effort than a fucking skittle platter on dollar tree plates

Realistically how long would it take for someone to make something like this on commission?

I'm a lonelita who really only ever posts floordinates to tumblr just to have them congregated in one place and I'm facing a situation for the first time in a long time(read 7 years) I'm going to be seeing other Lolitas in person.

I'm going to a con in a few months specifically to see one of the guests and since I don't cosplay I wanted to do a coord that had something to do with them. Their mascot is a black bunny and I figured it'd be cute to plan a coord around that.

I'm pretty comfortable with my abilities to put together coords and I really like the outcome but it's pretty "different" from what I normally do in the sense that it looks fairly Larme inspired because of my color and fabric choices and I know bunny ears can easily stray into ita territory. I would say it almost has an ero feel to it though I won't be showing any skin.

Realistically, should I expect any negative feedback in person? I'm going no matter what because I really want to support the guest but I want to get a feel for the reactions I'd get. Sorry if this is stupid, it's just been ages since I've interacted with other Lolitas in person.
>>
>>9525960
Only people with no social skills would shit on you in person. And if someone does, who cares? You're not out to impress them, right? Besides, since you're a lonelita you won't be interacting with them again. Don't think about it too much, wear what you want.

Have you travelled with all or part of your wardrobe before? How did you pick what to take? Did you wear lolita the whole time, or did you have normie clothes for emergencies? What worked well? What would you do differently?

Also a tiny wardrobe gen for those who want to discuss getting maximum wear out of a few items, since the same principles apply.

>Have you travelled with all or part of your wardrobe before?
Yes, twice.
>How did you pick what to take?
The first time I packed whole coords to wear to indoors and didn't think too much about mixing and matching items. The second time I wanted versatility and to be able to dress for different weather so I tried to pick a variety of things that would match either black or white, but I ended up taking 5 pairs of shoes and 4 bags in the end anyway, so I could probably have gone with a less restricted color palette.
>Did you wear lolita the whole time, or did you have normie clothes for emergencies?
The first time I brought mostly normie clothes because I was only wearing lolita to special occasions, the second time I wore lolita pretty much daily and just brought a couple of pairs of jeans for emergencies. I travelled in normie clothes both times because it was a long, sweaty journey and I didn't want to risk wrecking a dress.
>What worked well?
I was on the fence about taking one pair of flat shoes because I thought heels matched my coords better, but in the end the flats were a godsend because I was doing a lot of walking and I only wore the heels once. If I did it again I'd plan all my coords around flats or flatforms like RHS and only pack heels if they were good-quality real shoes and not uncomfortable pleather crap.
>What would you do differently?
Either not bringing any black or bringing more black stuff. I brought a lot of black shoes, bags, accessories and main pieces but only one black blouse - an extra one would have given me a lot more versatility. I also saved space by not bringing any wigs, but I really regretted not bringing curling tongs because it was hard to get my natural hair to sit nicely.

Lots of unexpected bad weather fucked me over, since I'd only brought a couple of rainy-day coords, not a whole week's worth, but I'm not sure if I'd change how I pack next time though, since it could just have easily been a heatwave all week.

>Have you travelled with all or part of your wardrobe before?
Yes (although it was all travel via car, which meant I could bring as much as I wanted. Haven't done an airplane/train trip ever since getting into lolita)

>How did you pick what to take?
I limited myself to 1-2 color schemes, which then restricted me to only 1-2 shoes and bags, which imo takes up the most luggage space. Aside from that, OPs and darker colors are my go-to for traveling.

>Did you wear lolita the whole time, or did you have normie clothes for emergencies?
For winter trips, I wore lolita the whole time since its warm and I generally dont do any physical activities in the winter.
For summer trips, I brought along normie clothes for physical activities (beach, hiking, etc) and also to change out of halfway through the day when its too hot. Summer normie clothes don't take up too much space in luggage anyways.

>What worked well?
Sticking to a limited color scheme and bringing less bulky accessories like shoes and bags. Winter trips in lolita are infinitely easier than summer trips. I wear both classic and sweet, and classic is just so much easier to pack for. Also, people in tourist-y areas are less likely to annoy you in classic.

>What would you do differently?
I took one particular trip in the summer where I was away for about a week and had planned to wear lolita for all 6 days. I couldn't even lift my bag by myself and I had 4 pairs of shoes and 4 bags with me. I only ended wearing 4 coords and had to switch out halfway through most days because I was either going to the beach or biking or kayaking. Also it was hot as balls and by the end of it all, I wish I had taken my hoopskirt instead of pettis.
>>
>Have you travelled with all or part of your wardrobe before?
Only part, and only for short trips/long weekends.
>How did you pick what to take?
I picked 1-2 dresses that could be worn with similar pieces, and the other coordinate pieces had to work in with the normie clothes I took
>Did you wear lolita the whole time, or did you have normie clothes for emergencies?
I've never been able to wear lolita full time because I invariably end up doing something active when I'm away, so need normie clothes too.
>What worked well?
I generally only take carry on unless it's for more than 5 days,so always wear lolita flying. I wouldn't do that for say, more than a 4 hour flight though.
