What are some products that consumer who value their money should avoid like the plague, either because the profit margins are enormous, or the cut costs are so terrible the product is effectively worthless?

Only two I can think off the top of my head are fountain drinks and bottled water.

A local burger joint sells fountain drinks for $2.25, but puts avocado on your burger for $.75 and grilled onions for $1.50. Plus, for $2.25 at a grocery store, you can easily get 2-4 liters of soda.

Bottled water is a given, so I refuse to explain it.

Soda is fucking disgusting. Nice sugar... enjoy type 2 diabetes fag
>>
>>983656
Thanks for paying for my health care wage c-u-c-k :^)

>implying i pay taxes

lmao
>>

Movie theatre food in general, DVDs, smartphones, pharmaceuticals.
>>
drugs and alcohol

eating out

gas or commute fare if living in the city when you can bike

paying for television

shopping at "premium" grocery outlets such as whole foods

buying books or magazine subscriptions when your library probably has all you'd want for free. if you want to be super cheap you could even use them for free internet

i wish i had enough willpower to cut out the first two. i just love food, booze and weed too much.
>>
>>983653
>he thinks that there are consumer items that are not traps

nice goy
>>
>>983673

>gas or commute fare if living in the city when you can bike

Not everyone works as a construction worker.
I can't show up at work with disgusting smelly armpits because I had to bike 40 minutes to work.

Hookers/escorts/streetwalkers/massage therapists

Bagels. You can pick stale moldy ones from trashcans.
>>

Anything digital. I would say with the exception of useful applications that improve productivity like microsoft excel. But most useful applications are free.
>>
>>983653

a new car
any junk food
expensive cell phone plans
large insurance coverage on your auto
eating out

You people really need to stop lambasting bottled water as if it's a huge scheme that's got everyone tricked. Yes, I know you could get that much water out of your sink for a penny. But you can't carry your sink around with you.

When you're outside and it's hot, a cold bottle of water from a nearby store is worth more than the water from your sink because it's the only thing you can drink at the time. The convenience is part of the product.

Think about it this way: if you were far from home and needed a drink, how much would you pay to teleport home, drink a glass of water from your sink and then teleport back? A dollar and change for that sounds good to me.
>>
>>984012
Keep a refillable bottle in your car you walnut.
>>
>>983653
>>984012
>Drinking from plastic waterbottles

You guys are fucking goyim.

Enjoy your Xenoestrogens... Get a stainless steel or glass waterbottle at least.
>>
>>983664

I can see avoiding the first two, but the other two aren't as easy. I mean I plan on replacing my phone with a new/old model to save on upfront costs, but what would you do? And for prescriptions, there's not much to avoid that trap.
>>
>>983698

If you're having to bike 40 minutes to work *in a city*, as you yourself quoted, you're doing it wrong.

You sound like you live in the suburbs.
>>
>>983653
everything plebs pay for
tv
cellphone plans
cars
alcohol
anything you can download for free
certain services like psychological therapy

At the end unnecesary expenses serve as status symbol, expending on the superfluous says you have enough wealth that you can spend beyond the mere necessary, especially males to attract females. And that is an important driver of economic growth
>>
>>984029
>>984031
I don't have a car. I have a few refillable water bottles and don't carry them around on a daily basis. If I'm going to class or the gym and have a bag with me, sure, and I have one for my bike, but if I'm just taking a walk or doing an activity with friends I'm not going to carry a water bottle or backpack around all day just to save a dollar. Even if I did, the water would be warm by the time I got far enough away from my house that I got thirsty. I would rather not drink than carry a water bottle.

I get that it's a more economic decision, I'm not retarded, but it's just such an insignificant difference that the extra money isn't even worth having to hold the bottle and drink warm water. Even making minimum wage it would only take 2-3 hours to make enough money for a month's worth of disposable bottled waters.

I understand if you're doing it for environmental reasons, but I personally don't care about that.

Video games.

>purchasing the packaged media from a retailer
>paying hundreds of dollars for discs which cost about 10 cents a piece

>downloading files
>if you can download it from the internet, you can download it for free

>leisure time
>every other conceivable way of spending leisure time contributes more to your future success and doesn't encourage failing at everything in your life

>tfw no gf
This is given, so I refuse to explain it.
>>
>>984031
Stay mad, poor boy. I can afford to spend 2 dollars for a dozen case of Poland spring when it's on sale. The convenience factor is worth it when I don't wanna bring my own bottle somewhere
>>
>>984012
>>984029
>>984031
Personally I use a camelbak.
>refillable 2 liters
>colder longer
>flexible, doesn't take space when empty
Why do people have bottles when hydration bladders are better?
>>
>talking about items that cost a couple of dollars
>not thinking about the bigger things

>Rent
Can you find it cheaper? I pay half the rent my peers do and its barely any worse than their places and has a great landlord
>Pay rises
If you alter your spending when you get a raise your an idiot. Just up your savings
>Debt
If you pay interest on any debt you are stupid. Get rid of your debt

If buying a bottle of water or a can of soda in the weekend makes you squirm you should get off /biz/.
>>
>>983673
Often I can get cheaper food at whole foods.

Also quality matters. Many foods at regular grocers are loaded with filler, so instead of enriching the grocer you're enriching the manufacturer.
But Carbohydrates are the most expensive calories across the board.

>>983883
as opposed to wives and girlfriends hmmm..... math required. dubious quality assurance.
>>
>>984785
This to be completely honest. Camelbaks or their knockoffs are really good.

(OFFTOPICWARNING /DIY/ CONTENT AHEAD)
If you dont care about the bulk, just make one out of PVC that you pressurize and have the tube come out of the bottom.
>>
>>984747
)^: aw you can't enjoy something if it's not actively contributing to future profits in some way?
Sucks, mate, Videogames are fun, they will always be fun, and I can afford to have fun. Same with other things. For example, nobody said you had to shoot heroin every day just because you associate with drugs
>>
>>984043
Up until now buying new phones has been a normal thing but a new phone today that is well managed should last you at least 4 years if you're not a kek who needs the latest title.

Depending on how well your diet and daily routine is, most medical issues are avoidable and there are many many home remedies and even plants that you can grow to cure many illnesses by making your own medicine. You'll likely end up growing your own produce too.

People lives for thousands of years without modern medicine anon.
>>
>>983883
>he gets sex for free

>>
Don't buy new video games for $60. Wait a few months and you'll see them used online still in like new condition for $25-$30.

Don't buy "premium" coffee like Starbucks.. one cup costs pennies to produce, yet they slap their logo on it and charge $5.

Don't buy anything Apple. Their hardware is drastically overpriced. They've done a fantastic job of creating a brand and distinguishing themselves through marketing, but that's all it is - marketing. I'm not trying to single out Apple though. Many companies create a brand and sell you the brand, not the product. Stay away from these.

You can buy generic brand groceries and save money. In most cases, the ingredients even come from the same supplier, just in different packaging.

It was already mentioned, but I'd like to add, movie theatre popcorn costs more per ounce than filet mignon. Stay away from movie theatre food in general. My girlfriend and I just bought some candy at the gas station across the street and snuck it inside the theatre in her purse. It cost $3 at the gas station but would easily have been $10 in the theatre.

>Life expectency is low in old days when everybody was poor, constant state of wartime, crime and poor law enforcement, hazardous materials being used in everything from paint to "natural pesticides".

Don't blame all of that young death on improper prescription medicine. You don't need vicodin and aspirin every time you get a boo-boo or a headache. Drink some water, eat your vegetables and grow your own aloe to save shekels. Alcohol and hydrogen peroxide can easily stop infections.
>>
>>984012
Individually purchased bottled water is a rip off. I can buy a 24 pack of 16.9oz bottles for less than 3.15 and that's from a brand name. I can get generic spring water for 2.50 for a 24 pack. I can get the same for couple pennies from my sink but again that's super inconvenient especially when I'm working out or on the go. I keep two cases in my trunk and a few in the house. So simple.
>>
>>984012
>because it's the only thing you can drink at the time.
>bathrooms don't have taps
>>
>>985854
>drinking sweetened tea

The only sweetened tea I'll make time for nowadays is the rare homebrewed milk tea.
>>
>>985856
most of that is attributable to declines in infant mortality and not on extending the life-span in any meaningful (by meaingful I mean that 60 year olds are not more virile than they were 500 years ago) way
>>

Everything is overpriced. That's capitalism fag. Either make yourself valuable and have enough to play along or gtfo

because you look stupid as fuck walking around with a camelbak on in public what the fuck is wrong with you

I work for p&g

Why anyone buys casacde action packs vs powder is amazing to me.

They are made RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER, yet we can chanrge 10 times the amount for action packs.
>>
>>985859
I agree we do live in a pill obsessed society where people treat the symptoms and not the causes.

>I have a headache.
Here, take this pill for your headache!
>It cured my headache but now it gave me a stomach ache.
Here, take this pill for your stomach ache!
>It worked but now I have nausea.
Here, take this pill to care your nausea!
Etc. etc. etc.
>>
>>983656
>implying I don't drink aspartame-free diet Pepsi
>implying I wasn't already born with diabetes
Nice try fag

Real talk though, any food you don't prepare yourself. Unless I'm out on a date, I never eat out for convenience. Also, shoes. Way too expensive for how shitty they're put together. And no, I'm not spending a good deal of money on "good" shoes either.
