He's not wrong, Information systems is thriving atm a lot of companies are growing bigger, expanding online or improving overall systems. More people are needed to maintain databases and database management startups are among the most successful especially those that target towards the governments because they run on absolutely horrendous databases.

You can pretty much get a job anywhere you want.

Who cares? Assuming you haven't started studying yet, you'll be graduating in three years time (at least). Professionals can't predict the economy in three years time, what makes you think you can?

FWIW, even if what you chose turned out to be "saturated", you'll still have no problems finding a job if you aren't Joe Average. Do you honestly think a 4.0 with exceptional extra-curriculars from a good school ever struggles to find a job, in any job market?

Electricity Engineer with the lauded authorization

Anything related to water systems with plumbing and also gas authorization

Dunno if that is what it is called in the US, but in my country only people with authorization can say "this piece of factory/proces/machine/home electrical setup/sewage system/gas installation is up to specs and is hereby allowed to be used"

MASSIVE DEMAND

Coders. There's about 40k qualified people and a 250,000 need currently.

by 2020 the demand for senior web developers/coders will be approximately 1 million, and only 200,000 will be qualified.

That's why there are so many start-up companies touting to teach anyone code in 12 weeks to land a job as a junior web developer. People who stick with it can easily command jobs of $100k+ a year, especially in the SF and NYC area where living expenses are high.

Thing is, most resources can be found for free. Odin Project, Team Treehouse, Lynda... can learn how to code in a year part time if you stick with it.

It is over-saturated... with idiots and newbies. Some of the tried and true developer bootcamps have a high standard of acceptance, but practically guarantee an average six-figure salary if completed.
>>
>>975857
How viable is getting employed a coding job after learning from free sources? Or do more established coding bootcamps tend to carry more weight in terms of reputation for hiring managers?

Always money in selling shit. Either sell your own shit or sell someone's shit for commission.

>>975857

I've seen a lotty of shitty coders come from college. School teaches theory rather than practical coding and thus most students are shit. Universities have also been trying to focus on getting women to code who generally suck at it too.
>>
>>973375

I did this, the graduating class stays roughly the same size every year (small) even though more and more students are going to college
>>
>>975928
Not sure if the exact figures are valid, but it seems reasonable.

There's a ton of unmet demand for developers but they're for more specialized positions.

What's this whole extra-circular meme?

I want to do Computer Engineering at a polytechnic next year and so employers give a shit if I played football or basketball if I want to work in software or hardware? If I'm programming or doing IT work they should just want to know that I know what I'm doing, right?

If I do do extra-ciricular it would be something light and fun, like a table top gaming club or a debate club.
>>
>>976096
This isn't highschool. Employers don't care about your extracurriculars.
In STEM at least they care about experience and skill.
My first job never asked about my GPA, and I've never been asked about it in subsequent jobs. (3.0, CS major)

Make sure you do internships and research or personal projects. That will definitely make you stand out.
>>
>>975231
you should want things based on your desires, not based on how lazy you can be and still attain some measure of success in it.
>>
>>972718
Is this a meme or are you serious?
I'm double majoring in history/political science for law (I like history and poli sci is best for law even though it doesn't matter what you major in for it) and I thought it was overly saturated
>>
>>976155
Its hit or miss, I got the feeling like the meme caught on and every money hawk scurried over to IT and Finance, because I checked University of Oregon a Tier 2 and they were just like "yeah apply and you'll probably get in" they don't even know who I am. Yes this is just anecdotal evidence but if you go to the website and read How to Apply they give off a desperate vibe.

Long story short it might be secretly sneaky good to go into Law at this year because everyone got scared off thanks to the horror stories of Barrister to Barista in 2010-2015.
>>
>>976176
Thank you, you revitalized me. Time to crack down and do well in undergrad. No more fun allowed...

Funny you mention University of Oregon, my friend's brother is in his second year there and I guess he has a campaign taste. We exchanged emails and he helped me out. It sounds like he has a nice internship or something and law in Oregon would be comfy as all get out.
>>
>>976096

Depends on the company, playing team sports or getting involved in clubs shows you have initiative and are not a complete sperg. If the decision to hire you or another candidate is close then its likely the company will go with whoever will fit in better with the culture

An employer needs a check that you can go outside and not cry when another human being tries to communicate with you.

Relevant EC's are dope. Sure there might be a level of "this guys a hard worker whos involved in his community" if you do sports, but clubs that do travel or service work, or any shit related to the field you're going into (coding competitions, writing competitions, debate, whatever) can be icing on the cake assuming you have internships under your belt.

However, you'll cash out before it becomes too saturated.

The nature of the market is such that any field currently unsaturated will become saturated in just a few years

Therefore it's not even a question worth considering. By the time you graduate you will have already missed out.
>>
>>975857
>Thing is, most resources can be found for free. Odin Project, Team Treehouse, Lynda... can learn how to code in a year part time if you stick with it.
If you're NEET you can get a web dev job in under 6 months for sure. I've read a story about some hippie that couch surfs learning to code on his laptop and got a PHP job after finishing Codecademy's lessons and doing a few personal portfolio projects.

It's really cool how literally anyone with some self motivation can get a high paying job in and industry that would have been gibberish 25 years ago.
>>
>>981117
Trades are fucking shit and older workers will go out of their way to fuck over new workers.
>>
So, many, damn entry levels jobs in STEM field it's ridiculous. I've had to just stop reading emails, because there are so many. All of them pay $20/hr and last from 6mo-1yr and once you have 2 years in the STEM field you will be literally begged to work in full-time positions w/ benefits.

this is a job literally anyone with a source of electricity and some wifi he can leech off can learn to do, in theory, what an interesting cyberpunk future it might be

anyway

web developer, coder, PHP job, Odin Project, Team Treehouse, Lynda, Codecademy

film / "media arts"

fucking seriously. you're all laughing now but I'm making 70k six months out of college with a cushy corporate 35 hour work week.

there's a lot more avenues through "media arts" than simply going to hollywood to suck the next producer's nephew's dick your whole life
>>
>>982910
Please elaborate, all media educations here can not promise internships, and admit to being oversaturated.
>>
>>977553
Pretty straight forward: do math, communicate what the math tells you, get paid. Asians struggle with the communicate part because of their accents but the field is full of them because white people can't do math.

Most job postings expect 2-3 tests complete right after graduation but I was getting interviews with 0 tests done and 2 scheduled because I was white and could speak clearly.

Definitely saturated for indians and chinese tho

Incidentally coding has this same problem - white people who are legitimately good are on instant manager/ceo track just because they can speak clearly. But white coders are mostly brogrammers that want to play with nerf guns all day so it's saturated with asians and indians.
>>
>>982935
Fuck yes, I'm white.

Are there any downsides to the job?
