I think you can buy something called receipts, which are just an international bank holding the shares for you.
>>

I think if you buy foreign stocks outright, you get taxed heavily on them.
>>

CPA here. U do NOT want to buy any foreign investments of any kind unless u can afford at least 5k a year to prepare ur taxes. There r so many fucking regs regarding foreign investments u could end up so fucked. Don't even open a foreign bank account.

Give u an example. If u buy a foreign stock and it turns out 2 be a PFIC, u need to file Form 8621 every fucking year till u sell it. If u forget to, they can fine u $10k per violation. Keep ur money domestically.

So buy it on the foreign market then. Use your broker's stock finder, type in the company, find the symbol, and place an order.

okay please tell me which platform you use

my current trading platform does not offer this service
>>

Use degiro
>>
protip indian markets
>>
>>967075

I just invested in a fund which is quite heavily diversified in emerging markets across the pacific region, 25% of which is India. I reckon your protip is justified too. I'm in for the long term.

To answer your question OP, funds can be a way to get access to more difficult to reach markets and investments that might only be open to professional institutions rather than retail investors.

If you have ADRs, do they tax rape you, or is it just like regular stocks?
>>
>>965585
Nobody is giving you a serious answer because they don't know.
You probably already know that if a company lists in U.S. , including via ADR, you can buy it like an American stock.
Funds can also be a good solution.
But if you want to buy a foreign stock without an adr, you need to buy it on foreign exchange. SOME brokerages offer this service. I can confirm tradeking, vanguard, and ametitrade DO NOT. I hear fidelity does but can't confirm.
If you have a local contact in foreign country you may be able to use a foreign broker, but I don't know details or tax consequences.
