BUY XOMA

It's currently rated a buy/hold. They have two investor conference presentations coming up, one next week Thursday and one December 1st so you should see fast gains. The stock is predicted to average out at around $3/share so get it while it's cheap.

Is there ever a reason not to buy as soon as a company hits NASDAQ and sell shortly after? It seems like all stocks spike up 20%+ within their first couple days

Avoid IPO's unless you're on margin and then sometimes even then. They're often overvalued and by the time you can make a swing trade work for you, no one wants it at that price anymore. Or if you hold, you're holding a 60 dollar stock that the market is quickly deciding is only worth 40. I see this all the time. Best to wait until it becomes what it's going to be.

So sell on ASTI or hang on?
>>
>>960819
YES i have also noticed this

confirmed there is no buy button for me on RACE either

at first I thought maybe its because i dont have enough buying power in my account to even afford one share
but when I look at GOOG there is a buy button despite not having enough buying power for one. so that aint it.
>>
It's probably because it just went public, Robinhood free-ness can't afford it right away check monday

I feel stupid for asking this, but what is stopping me from buying x amount of shares with a company I know will at least go up a little bit, then sell it all a few days later, and buy more in another stock that is worth a little more with what I had + what I earned in profit, then continuing to go to bigger stocks (and bigger returns)?
>>

Nothing
>>
>>960831
It already dropped to .17 after hours so it looks like its going to drop Monday. I'm personally going to hold onto it though hoping meme magic 2 electric boogaloo will happen during the military thing in December. I bought at .12 and I don't think it'll reach that low between now and then so I'm going to risk making like $5 less profit on the chance we go to the moon with ASTI come December.

so why isn't everyone doing it? am I missing something? is that not as efficient as waiting for your stocks to be worth something?
>>
>>961050
Because it isn't that easy kek
>>
>>961050
If you have like a million dollars, then sure, you'll see a decent amount of money roll in from it.
Otherwise, you're looking at a few pennies per trade. Unless you want to be risky, in which case you're looking at all your money gone
>>
>>961054
Say I start with like $200, bought as much XOMA at $1.18 (Oct29), I buy 169 shares of it. Few days later it goes to $1.85(Nov3), you sell all stocks, getting back $313, move on to a stock that's worth more, and do the same thing. Seems easy, what am I missing? I am still waiting for my transfer to go through and I've never done this before...
>>
>>961063
That you don't know the future.
>>
>>960467
Buy RXii and XGTI nigga
>>
>>961065
well obviously if the share never goes above what you bought it at you'd lose money, but robinhood doesn't charge for trading so you do it any time the stock goes up a little, you never really lose money, especially if you play it safe and collect the profit and do the same thing in a second stock. it's less likely for both to go to complete shit, but as long as it goes up and down you'd still be making profit, right?
>>
>>961063
Can you post the trades you make here so we can jump on board since you seem to believe you can predict the future?
>>
>>961072
what I mean is that is an example from a small jump in XOMA. as long as you arent waiting for a huge raise, and you are constantly trading as it goes up, then splitting into multiple stocks, your chances of failing get less, sure it takes more patience but it seems like a safer way

I'm a lurker here, but I've never thought about investing in single stocks before since Buffett said that people who day-trade/don't invest in mutual funds are more than likely going to lose all of their investment.

What's the truth about this?
>>
>>961084
well say you make a goal to meet a certain percentage (even if it's low) before selling despite how long it takes for it to meet that percentage.
and split it up between 3-4 different stocks

I feel stupid now, it's probably exactly how everyone does it right?

I think I get the catch though, a lot of these stocks are hit and miss, even if they are high, they may never recover am I right?
>>
>>961087
For the most part, he's right. But we're mostly just gambling on meme stocks and shit posting together with small amounts of money we don't really care about loosing. You have to be a total idiot to loose all your money though.
>>
>>961094
oh so that's where the long term goes in..
say I have $200, split it between 4 stocks, $50 each, each with it's own goal, say 50% more than what you bought it for, and sell if they do, otherwise just leave the shares alone and hope they raise someday right?

thank you all for helping the special needs kid learn to penystock

Don't. WalMart's problems are the same as Target's and Macy's, and the same reason why Amazon went to the moon: retail is dying.

It all started exactly 1 year from now when, for the first time, black friday didn't do shit. It's expected to do even less this year as the average person has even less spending power and the online vendors offer even more free shipping and equal discounts. It doesn't them that the news covers the fact that black friday kills people.

Retail stores aren't on the dip, they're on their way to the grave.

Interesting thoughts
>>
>>961400
>>961408

Hm yeah. I think the fed and the recent happenings in Europe will shake up the FTSE and the S&P even more.

I am thinking of buying more of a S&P 500 index from Vanguard but it seems like dropping like a brick so I am not sure when to actually buy in.

Going to do some technical analysis research in general as I want to have a good guess when a stock is actually at the bottom or it will continue dropping. Probably such thought must be common in most investors.
>>
>>961408
Why does the average person have less pending power now than before?

Wage stagnation is an actual thing. Inflation keeps rising, prices go up ever so slightly, people still get paid the same amount. This doesn't have an effect for a while; I'm not going to deny myself something just because it costs $10 more, but over the course of 15 years of wage stagnation it's finally taking its toll. Shitty laptops and acceptable TVs cost less now, sure, but basic needs like food, gas, rent (fucking especially rent) are noticeably more expensive now than they were 15 years ago, but the average entry level position still pays 40k-50k just like it did back then. Combine this with massive student loans for most people between the ages of 20-30 and you've got a population that owes more and effectively makes less.

Is it possible to avoid debt in college and get a good paying job? Of course it is. Do the vast majority achieve this? No they do not. Massive retailers are markets for the vast majority.
>>
>>961437
>>961444
>>961446
I should point out, however, that Macy's real estate value alone puts it at $50. It's a fucking steal at $38 right now even if it goes belly up and gets bought out.

The company model may be doomed, but its assets are undervalued. I'm buying in on either Monday or Friday. It's a gamble whether the backlash of the Paris attack will drop it lower before the investing population realizes that Macy's is undervalued.
>>
>>961460

Not really in this conversation about retail but I am curious how do you know when a stock is going to continue dropping or will begin bouncing back.

I mean you can't know for certain but you can have a good guess.

I will place a limit buy for VUSA, not sure which price I should go with but thinking around £25

Just stumbled on this thread a few minutes ago. I used to use plus500 but cashed out after their free 5 euro turned into 60. Does this thing have any actual companies on it or is it just shitty stocks? Also what's the margin call like? I remember getting hundreds of texts off plus500 when a stock was dipping.
>>
>>961087

Very likely given machine trading. If you must trade its best to hold for longer periods.
>>
>>961087
Started off trading on a free to use online brokerage that gave you a free start up. All I used was technical analysis and I managed to get a bit of profit. The best thing is to no be greedy and know when to get out. This should really only be a hobby as this is actually really stressful if you're using a lot of money.
>>
>>961502

Clinical trial results caused the peaks. It's still ongoing

Keep in mind of the realestate bubble that's going on right now.

Macy's underlining realestate may be worth 21 billion dollars in 2015 but could be worth 8 billion in 2016 after that bubble pops the fuck out
>>
>>961408
Wouldn't Wal-Mart's physical assets be worth more than just about anyone else's? I can see a future where half of those stores become data and distribution centers for home delivery, if they're smart about it. Which you'd have to imagine they would be, given what's at stake and also that they're Wal-Mart.

Nah mate that'd be the greatest thing to ever happen to me. If I could keep my job and the housing prices drop by 20%, they'd drop by 40% here. People are buying houses 20% OVER asking price instead of under, once the bubble pops I could get a well maintaned house that will last for 200k instead of getting a broken down home on less than a quarter acre for 250k. Crashes tend to last 2 years so a 2016 crash would be so god damn ideal for my timeline.

Actually I only invest in ETFs and not stocks. I am a long term value investor so not looking for quick in and out stocks, which isn't profitable either way with small capital (around $10k) and high trading fees - $9-11. Basically capital preservation with modest returns is my goal rather than much riskier strategies.

also i have a question about dividends

I like the way robinhood notifies you of dividend payouts.

what determines if you get a payout?
do you have to be holding for a certain amount of time?
I just got a dividend from a stock ive only held since november 3rd.
do you have to be holding the stock just at the perfect moment when the company pays out? What stops you from just buying a stock right before they pay dividends? is that classified information, insider trading?
>>
>>962994
You just have to hold the stock before the ex-dividend date and after the dividend is announced
>>
>>962994
Dividends don't come from fairy dust. The stock drops by approximately the same amount as the dividend pays.

First of all, what do you know a lot about? What is the industry that runs that? Invest in that industry. since you already know about it you'll be able to search for more obscure comapnies.

For example, I like viydja. I invested in ATVI (Activision-Blizzard) at $29. It's now almost $40 (though only at 3 stocks and I'm wondering if I should buy in more)

>>963879
How reliable is your source, is there a way I could fact check him. I have 103 shares of that stock and I need to know when things will start looking up
>>
I asked this in another thread but I'll probably get a quicker reply here.

What is the appeal of penny stocks? Is it the volatile gains that could be made when you dump a large sum of cash into one? For example:

>ASTI stock was at .12 a few days ago
>With $5000 = 41666 Shares
>Two days later ASTI shoots up to .20
>Sell 41666 shares at .20 = $8333

Thats $3333 profit.

Is there anything here I'm missing?
>>
>>964304
The part where it doesn't shoot up to .20 in two days. But yeah that's it basically. No one buys $5000 worth at a time though. Or shouldn't.
>>
>>964304
yes that's the appeal. if your GOOG goes up by $1, you made fucking nothing. if your ASTI goes up by $1, you just made thousands

Is it a good high-risk investment strategy to pretty much go to the list of top loser for a given month or week (stocks that have most 10-50% of their value), find a few that seem to, according to news reports and stuff, be getting their shit together or are coning out with new products/services soon, and buy a few shares of all of them? That's what I'm doing. I have 300$ and I'm looking at the loser lists right now. This is money I can def afford to lose (I put twice this much in my savings every week) but I'm still sweating bullets, anons. Comfort me?

It's just money. No one dies from 300$. Have fun learning, and remember to learn as much as you can.
