I've interviewed for software engineer positions at hundreds of companies and I've become really really good at it. Here is what you can expect:
If it is a large tech company like google, facebook, microsoft, apple, etc then you should expect questions on basic algorithms. The questions usually involve writing out code, often on a whiteboard. Questions will involve using algorithms and data structures to find optimal solutions to problems. Some example questions could be "reverse a linked list using O(1) memory and O(n) time complexity" or "find the second largest value in a binary search tree".
Smaller companies sometimes ask questions like this too but they often focus more on practical problems. They are usually looking more for people who can hit the ground running. They may ask you to write real code too. I've had some startups ask me to implement a basic REST api for CRUD operations and stuff like that (for web dev). Small companies are also probably more likely to ask you questions about situations you've been in or other non-programming related things.
Also both groups may sometimes ask about general level concepts like scalability or concurrency.
