You invest money you don't need to be liquid. When you budget you should separate savings into those that are easily accessible in case of an emergency and savings/investments that you can afford to lock away for several years.

Your investments provide return through dividends/interest and/or capital growth. Dividends and interest can also be reinvested to speed growth through compounding.
