I admit ignorance, however would a stock with dividends be a better long term investment?

I have a targeted Vanguard. A whole S&P index fund and Whole Dow Jones index fund.

I wanted to invest because my wife will cease to work in October and I believe that it's important to set aside money for her retirement since she is giving up 4-8 years of full time earning to raise our child.

Also, I have 5k sitting around doing nothing.
